Cornell and Diehl's Good Morning is a lighter English blend. Back around 2009 Dunhill pipe tobacco production ceased at the Murray's factory in London. The elimination of this stalwart of traditional English tobacco surprised the pipe smoking community. Many blenders attempted to fill the gap with replica blends, until Dunhill production was resumed by STG a few years later. Many of these "tributes" faded away after the reintroduction. A few tribute blends have stood firm on the market due to their own qualities. C&D released Good Morning as a replacement for Dunhill Early Morning Pipe at the 2009 Chicago Pipe Show, and it was well received.

What is in it?

The mixture is made of light and dark ribbon with a generous helping of large pieces of broken flake.  This blend is not physically very similar to the current Early Morning Pipe.

Virginia: The broken flake is Virginia tobacco.  The Virginia may have been stoved during processing, and seems very dry and toasty.

Oriental:  Oriental tobacco is here in solid quantity.  Perhaps more of a Turkish variety of Izmir, the flavor is aromatic and spicy.

Latakia: Cyprian Latakia is a lighter condiment here, there is no blast of heavy smoked meat flavor but a rich creaminess that comes and goes thru the bowl.

What does it smoke like?

The idea of Early Morning Pipe and therefore Good Morning is to provide the smoker a lighter blend for the first pipe of the day.  A quiet and subtle flavor that won't stun the palette and ruin later smokes is certainly provided by both blends.  The flavor is very similar to the current Dunhill offering, which is startling considering the difference in appearance between the two blends.  The biggest difference in comparison is that the flavor is more sweet and buttery smooth in Good Morning.  Regrettably, I have not sampled the Murray's production, and the age on a tin now would make the comparison impossible.  Evaluating Good Morning on it's own merits, you will find a light, nuanced, but in no way weak English mixture.  The strength of the Orientals and the possible toasting of the Virginia makes a smooth and flavorful smoke.  There is an incense like aroma and flavor.  Thanks to the broken flake the flavor is varied thru the bowl and the blend is slow burning.  The end of the bowl pushes the medium English threshold, and I would call the nicotine content mild.  This blend is easy to smoke back to back, and would be a great choice for a starter English.

How do I prepare it?

I recommend a moderate pack in a wide bowl for maximum flavor.  I do not recommend breaking up any chunks in the blend.  The blender was wise to use a broken flake to control the burn and allow the flavor to evolve thru the bowl.  Some relights may be needed, as a slower pace keeps the flavor from disappearing.  The blend seems to be dry enough out of the tin and should be able to be loaded without sitting out.  Don't let the name keep you from enjoying this any time of the day.

Love this blend, real English and it is not harsh, yet not sweet. A regular on my rotation.

    Very good

I find this slightly sweeter than EMP. I personally like it better. The sweetness is very light and natural. Halfway through the bowl everything really comes together nicely for a buttery, smoky sweetness that’s is perfect for the drive to works or all day sipping.

    “Good Morning”

My favorite tobacco was Dunhill’s “ Early Morning” and to say I was unhappy with its demise is an understatement. I tried several “same as” from various makers but was always disappointed. Finally tried Good Morning and was very pleasantly surprised. I tried it next to some original Early Morning and found it to be well within the flavor range of the original. Happy again.
