    Peter Heinrich Dark Strong Flake

Posted by Brian on 4th Mar 2024

Like other reviewers have state, I too purchased a couple of tines of the PH DSF as a replacement for the now discontinued Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky. The PH DSF is close to the Orlik but not close enough. The PF DSF appears to have more light-colored VA tobacco pressed into the flake compared to the Orlik. And the topping or casing is definitely not the same. I'm smoking one of the tins now and am cellaring the second tine to see if it changes with a bit of time. It's a good tobacco but it isn't a direct replacement for the ODSK. I wish that I knew that the Orlik was being discontinued. I would have bought a truck full.

    Nice Orlil substitute!

One of my all-time favorites is the recently discontinued Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky. There was a discussion at my pipe club about how this is the same tobacco with a different label. I'm not going to say it is exactly the same, but I will say it appeals to me just as much. Rich, soft, and a great balance with the Kentucky and bright Virginia. For me an all-day smoke, but for some, it may be a little too hearty. I've turned many people onto the Orlik and now this. Everyone who tries it seems to love it, even if they are normally an aero or vaper or English smoker. This is simply a well-made and we'll balanced tobacco that has broad appeal. I think if more people took a chance and tried the Orlik, we would still be able to get it! The dark in the name may scare people off, IDK. The only knock I can give this, as compared to the Orlik, is the tin presentation. The Orlik was always arranged in 3 neat and tidy stacks of perfectly formed flakes, where the Heinrich is all jumbled up and broken. It still smokes the same and at the end of the day I'm a form follows function guy, so I'm going a strong 4.5 stars on this. Price is good too, especially in the 200gm tins.

Unfortunately, there will probably no longer be a worthy replacement for the departed Orlik Dark Strong of Kentucky

Unfortunately, there will probably no longer be a worthy replacement for the departed Orlik Dark Strong of Kentucky. But Peter Heinrichs - Dark Strong Flake can be called a replacement, I would like more, but this is what is on the market. And so: Orlik Dark Kentucky was a slightly sweeter and easier on the tongue when I compared the two blends some years back. PH DSF seems just slightly harsher, and has a little more molasses than the licorice in the Orlik version. The red Virginia was a little more prominent in ODSK with more dark fruit flavor. Burns cool, clean and a little slow with a very consistent sweet taste. Has a pleasantly lingering after taste.

    Good tobacco

This is a good smoke, Compared to Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky I think I prefer the ODSK over this. Both are very similar but I believe I get more tobacco flavor throughout the whole bowl with the Orlik. This is a tad sweeter overall but once the topping burns off it does not hold its flavor in my opinion. Still a good smoke and I have enjoyed it but I will probably stick with Orlik Dark strong Kentucky from now on.

    Fine Kentucky tobacco

Posted by NEAL on 9th May 2019

I found an old tin of this at my brick and mortar and promptly fell in love. A good balance of tobacco to topping burns well and is very satisfying smoke. Hard to find tobacco in the U.S., fortunately, I found tobaccopipes.com. I ordered 2-200 gram tin's from tobacco pipes. While new smokes very well, definitely worth cellaring. One of my top 5 smokes. If you like Kentucky worth a shot. 5 stars aged 4 stars right out of a new tin.

If you are a fan of the dark fired

Posted by Al janabi on 13th May 2018

Very similar to Orlik dark strong, less cased in my opinion though and drier but much more brittle in comparison to a flake so rubbing it out is ideal, fold and stuff is messy. I am not a fan of the burley or dark fired with exception to some blends (old dark fired, bold Kentucky by mac baren) if it is your thing this is a must try. Sweet molasses taste with a smokey edge. Smell is of burning incense. Price point acceptable. Al janabi
