Let's discuss favorite cuts! Interested to hear why you gravitate to one or another, or what factors play into your preferences.
Flake is the most versatile in my opinion. You can rub it out to personal preference or stuff as is. Keeps fresh longer burns nice and slow and cool. Love coins for the same reason they're just a little less common.Plugs are good too but the downside is you need a knife to prepare and stuff and fold is not an easy option.
Who voted cake? I kinda agree. I think cakes are the most fun.
I voted flake cause it's the most fun, but not the easiest 🤣
As I’ve only enjoyed ribbon, flakes and coins (it being quit early on my pipe journey) I find that flakes make the most sense to me. Lots of utility and they sure are puuuurdy. Usually only takes 1 flake for a decent sized bowl and the multiple prep methods give you a chance to see if that changes the flavor, or just the smoking characteristics.
I selected ribbon, but with the understanding that it meant actual ribbon and not the sloppy rough cut often advertised as ribbon. In general though, I would mostly prefer flake/coin or plug (again true ones, not C&D style flakes and plugs) when I buy tobacco.
No love for plugs 🤪
I love the sloppy rough cut á la G.L. Pease. Flake is maybe the most versatile and I like it very much. I also like true wide ribbon cut.
I’m with @Juan José Pascual Lobo on the sloppy rough cut “ribbon” that’s not really ribbon. Most of my favorite blends are that - or tumbled broken flake. But, I have and enjoy examples of each of the listed formats - plus cube-cut, (which isn’t listed).
I prefer flake/coin tobacco. How it smokes, keeps, loads; these make it wonderful to use in my experience. Another thing is that it is easy to learn how much to use in a particular pipe; e.g., all my group 3/4 pipes take 1 to 1.5 flakes etc., so I don't have to fiddle much when loading.
For what it's worth, I had some difficulty deciding what to include in the list, because some cuts are so close in concept having both might just have a spoiler candidate effect. Could probably have consolidated Ready Rubbed with Broken Flake and Flake with Coin.
