Hearth & Home Dunhill BB1938 Match

(2.90)
From Pipes&Cigars website: About a year ago, we approached Dunhill about bringing one of their old favorites back to market. It was a very smooth Latakia blend with red and bright Virginias that was sold only at the Dunhill stores. It's name came from the comment "smooth as a...b___'s b_______". They told us that they couldn't use the name anymore, so bringing it back was off the table. Not to be deterred, we began doing research to recreate the blend, including acquiring an old tin for comparison. Then we found out that they were going to reintroduce the blend under the name BB1938. We had spent too much time, effort and expense to develop our blend not to release it, so we invite you to try Match - BB1938.

Another exceptional blending coup by Russ O. I have no idea whether this blend matches the original Dunhill Bab's Bottom or not, but accepting it for what it is, I was very impressed. It is indeed very smooth with a solid Virginia/Latakia base that plays together like Brooks & Dunn. This one will make you do the Boot Scootin' Boogie!

Being a big fan of both Dunhill and Russ O I had very high expectations for this blend—maybe too high.

Well blended, but having never had the original (and/or re-release) I am basing this only on the Match product…

Dunhill’s version, I imagine, based on my experience with the majority of the line-up, most likely has that depth-of-character so typical of Dunhill… that bit of umami and Dunhill dosage (a mild tobacco-aroma topping I suspect they all get to tie them together… along with masterful blending and pricey leaf) – this does not.

Although the tobacco is good and the blend display’s Russ’ deft hand, it is otherwise a bit 'meh' even though Russ is very close to matching that Dunhill layering of flavors, in the BB1938 it just feels like the Oriental heart of blends like Standard Mixture, London Mixture, or even EMP have just been ripped out and what’s left is hollow and a falls a bit-flat mid-palate. This isn’t such a surprise seeing as how this is really just Latakia and Virginia and in 1938 when this blend was introduced, an archetype of a proper English style before, especially modernly, or after the 50’s and 60’s they became more and more, dare I say ‘adulterated’ with Orientals leading to, IMHO, today’s frustratingly confusing landscape where one can’t really tell where one English blend ends and a Balkan/Oriental blend starts. (I myself love orientals and enjoy the more 'modern English style

Baby’s Bottom was meant to be just that, a plain and good-ole English without the toppings or flavorings which would have given the blend some variety in lieu of Oriental leaf which didn’t (at the time) belong.

In a world with so much variety of exotic English blends and blending talent BB1938’s personality and ‘raison d’etre’ is perhaps lost in translation—this is not Russ or Hearth and Home’s fault, this is a true interpretation that is nevertheless lost in translation.

RECCOMENDED FOR… those who want to maybe see a throw-back non-aromatic style or simply has no love for Orientals. It’s also an interesting blending ‘English Canvas’ to tweak to your heart’s delight with Turkish leaf or even some aromatics. It also tends to smoke a little hot probably because it is quite dry (bought in bulk).

Thought the smoke started off well - pretty typical english. Kept waiting on the flavors to mesh nicely and it just never seems to happen for me in this one. The harder your try to draw flavor and nuance, the harder on the tongue as well. Probably one of my least favorite english blends. It's an okay smoke, but it will be sometime before I kick it. There's a lot of great blends out there - I'd say to start elsewhere.

I've never tried the original or the new release, so I'm kind of "flying blind " on this match. Here's what I do know, this is spicier and burns hotter than a blend that's named "Baby's Bottom" should smoke. It's a Balkan, with only a touch of Latakia. The flavor is very subdued, but pleasant, and on the mild side. Perhaps I'm puffing this way too hard, causing some heat , so as to get some flavor and "N". I feel this is close to the new release of Durbar, not a blast of flavor ,but pleasant.

Have never smoked the original so this one is reviewed on it's own merits. A very distinctive English with the Virginias out front and a fair amount of punch from the Latikia. The taste is exquisite and mouth watering good. The burn is perfect down to a fine light ash. It's what you would expect from the great Russ O. and is another winner from the good folks at P&C.

Pouch appearance of mainly bright Virginia, some light brown, and just a few specks of Latakia. Thin ribbon cut makes it easy to load up, and lighting is easy with on point moisture.

Tin aroma of slight smokiness, some citrusy notes, and just enough sourness.

Initial flavors of this blend seem a bit sharp and citrusy. For the price of this 2oz sample, I wouldn't think the tobacco used would be super high grade, but they are still flavorful and seem of decent quality. The Latakia is present, but isn't upfront as intended. Terrific burn qualities, and does so down to a dark, fluffy ash. This blend appears to be very fresh, so I think with a few additional months of age, we could possibly add 1/2 star to this already 3 star blend from Russ! Not exactly a perfect match with the morning coffee, but an evening glass of bourbon fit much better.

It has been awhile since i smoked a Virginia/ Latakia only mixture. I can’t say i have ever complained of one . I have no complaints on this either. Very smooth blend . The Virginias are excellent. Hardly any grass and a little citrus. Just toasty and bready and a nice sweetness . The latakia smooths out any roughness . Very creamy . Burns a little fast because of the cut but not hot . Very mild in nicotine. Nice relaxing, enjoyable smoke . No bite . Well done ! I have a Dunhill tin or 2 of the blend this is copying in the cellar with some good age on it . Looking forward to smoking it one day .

Summary: A good basic English that is smoother than the original, but over-dominant toppings make it like an aromatic.

In most ways, I like this better than the original. Hearth & Home stoves or otherwise denatures both their Virginias and Latakia so neither becomes dominant. This results in a smoother smoke than the Dunhill version with no jagged flavor pattern. Unfortunately, they then dump vanilla all over it, which makes this into an aromatic with some tobacco flavor peeking out.

I have smoked this tobacco in at least three different pipes over the last few days and it smokes the best in my Missouri Meerschaum Country Gentleman. The first word that came to mind on my first bowl was "dessert"; it was very tasty and mellow. The Latakia is at a moderate level in the mix, not overwhelming but still discernable. It is a mild-medium bodied English blend and will bite a little bit if puffed too fast. It stays lit relatively well and smokes dry. I never smoked the original Dunhill BB, so I don't know how it compares. It came in a Pipe Tobacco of the Month Club offering a few months ago and was at just the right humidity level when I received it. It is a good tobacco on it's own merits, but is a little light for my personal tastes.

I purchased 8 ounces of this blend when it first became available. I loaded a bowl straight out of the box when it arrived as I had great anticipation of this one. I can honestly say I was not the least bit disappointed! Excellent combination of Virginias with a dose of Latakia. Packed well lit well and easy to keep lit. The combinations of Virginias have a sweet grassy flavor and aroma and the lat is not too strong or too weak, just a good leathery and smokey flavor. While this blend a match to a blend which I have never had the opportunity to enjoy I feel it is a solid blend and would be a good introduction to English blends if one were wanting to delve into this realm. I smokey at least one Bowl of this daily and plan to lay in a couple of pounds of it in my tobacco vault. Of the 150 plus blends I have on hand I place This one in the top 10. Good solid smoke, very enjoyable indeed.
