The Virginias offer some dark fruit, citrus, a bit of earth, and a fair amount of vegetative grass. The sweetness has a slight fermentation, and there is a floral touch as well. The maple sugary topping, and the sweet rum lightly tone down the tobaccos. Won’t bite, but it has a couple rough edges, even though the topping does tame them a mite. I suggest a slowing puffing cadence to avoid a possible harsh note. The nic-hit is a little past medium. Burns fairly cool, clean and a bit slow with a very consistent flavor. Leaves a little moisture in the bowl, and needs a fair number of relights. Has a pleasant, lingering after taste. Not an all day smoke, and it should be smoked in a small bowl or cob.

OK, I'm totally screwed. I love it. LOVE it! In my Tinsky kit Briar (3/4" X 1 1/4" bowl), very heavy bowl with plateaux top with a total shank + stem of 5" (straight), which is my preferred geometry for ropes, twists, bogies and Pigtails...this stuff is pretty nearly heaven on earth. The deep brown VA base comes through loud and clear. Then the scenting which is mild, presents as just a little moreso than the typical sweet flavored top. In the larger girth twists it's just enough to be noticed...in this Pigtail version it's more noticeable. Just enough to take it past really good to perfect. The Rum is one of the most popular flavors, being an ideal match for the brown base. It's sweeter since it's meant primarily as a chew. But it works beautifully as a smoke. I cut thin coins off the Pigtail and rubbed them loose...dried about 15 minutes it packed and burned wonderfully well. Pack it lightly to start and tamp ever so lightly. One cleaner mid bowl to keep things clean, not so much for any gurgle, was all it needed...plus the standard relights which are inevitable for the genre. A glass of cool water to rinse away the slight bitterness as always. Water so as not to skew the flavor profile. The result was fine...very, very fine.

I think a standard size bowl of this kind of dy-no-mite would be way too much goodness, strength wise that is, as it's loaded with N. I have maybe three briar pipes with what I consider appropriate dimensions plus a few small MM's. The little ones.

This blend places in my top five Gawith tobaccos. My highest recommendation...if you like the genre. Experienced hobbiests only need apply.

Gawith Hoggarth - Brown Pigtail Sweet Rum.

I find it difficult to detect much of the rum in both the aroma and smoke. To be fair, the smoke has a bit higher rum flavour than the aroma, but only slightly. The twist is on the thin side, making it easy to slice and the content of moisture is a beneficial factor. I don't have to let it air and I think that's somewhat due to the thickness of the rope as it's not thick enough to store a lot of water.

I notice after the first five minutes of smoking that the rum becomes a little easier to taste. It doesn't become like a true aromatic in flavour but it seems less daunting to identify it. This contains a hefty wallop of nicotine. In the description it says "ideal for quick smoke breaks" and trust me, for nicotine satisfaction you won't need long! I feel that the sweetness of the Virginia cuts through better than the rum. The rum only offers a very light addition. I find the same situation in the room note: rum, where?!! A good quality is the burn. Very cool, very steady and very even.

This is a good blend, hence why I score it three stars but my main issue is the name. Sweet Rum, I find that a bit of a misnomer!
