Mild Mild to Medium Mild Very Pleasant

As this is Blender’s Gold Burley and Black, I’m repeating that review here: The gold Virginia cavendish provides mild grass and citrus with a drop or two of honey. The unsweetened black cavendish offers some brown sugar. The burley is a little nutty sweet and earthy in a secondary role. Sublimating the tobaccos to some extent is a light vanilla and caramel topping, though the caramel is less obvious. The vanilla has a little thinness to the taste. No nic-hit to speak of. Has no bite or harsh notes. Needs a little dry time, but burns cool and smooth with a consistent flavor, requiring a few relights if you do dry it; more if you don't. Leaves some moisture in the bowl, but no goop or dottle. Has a pleasant after taste. An all day smoke.

I am a die hard fan of OTC blends and have had most of them. Some are of course better than others. SWR and SWRA are to me better than say prince Albert etc. But understand I like aromatic blends. What caught me about this one is the very old impression I got. If you grew up in the 50s, 60s or 70s and your dad, grandpa or uncles smoked a pipe you probably remember a smell in your mind. This one is very, very close. Much more so then most. A simple but very good tobacco that will take you back to an easier time with a nice sweet aroma.

This is only available in the 12 oz. bag. If you are looking for a predominately burley blend to smoke with a mild room note and a cool draw you'll like this. If you have a blend that is too sweet or burns too hot this can tone it down without dramatically changing the flavor. Yes there is Virginia and Cavendish in the mixture so it is not a straight burley. I love this on a nice summer evening as the sun sets. Of course I smoke straight burleys so this one suits me fine. Remember this doesn't cost $4-$5 per ounce so don't expect it to smoke like it does. For an all day tobacco or for those on a budget this is a nice tobacco that provides a very pleasant smoke while the sunsets or you and friends talk over the day. It is basic, honest and enjoyable.

Was a bit goopy in the bag, but dried easily enough. Impressions at first was no strong odor. No blast of vanilla, etc., but a mild cookie dough odor. Like the tube-o sugar cookie your mom would get and keep in the fridge. Maybe the tiniest hint of gingerbread. Smoke was.....Mellow. Totally OTC geezer fodder, which is what I was wanting this for. I was impressed with it's simple, yet pleasing smoke. Once dried well this is closer to SWR in comparison if you've had SWR. I smoke a LOT of SWR, and think SWR is better, but not by such a large margin I'd duke it out if somebody challenged me. The taste of hints of spice come through. I don't really get vanilla per se. Room note is o-k, not gonna stop anyone in their tracks, but certainly not bad. Again, just like old burley tobacco's from the drugstore. Instead of "Mellow", they reeeeeally should've consider calling this "dimestore blend". This "Mellow" blend holds it's own in the OTC challenge. I'm very pleased with the smoke. and the purchase. I was afraid it'd be just a re-label of their "Natural" blend, but it is not. It's listed as an aromatic, but it's not what you're probably thinking of with aromatic tobacco.

Update: 50/50 with black cav makes this a really good smoke, without being too goopy or so sickening sweet. This blend is better than either by themselves.

There's the old adage you get what you pay for. There's another adage that says you pay for the label. SuoerValue Mellow goes against this, proving OTC bulk blends can be on par if not down right better than its competitors. I found the secret to enjoying these often scoffed at mixtures: patience and air time. And boy was it a shock when I gave these tobaccos a second look by following that advice. SVM turned out to be a fantastic, straightforward but complex smoke. Yes, complex. Hints of vanilla, chocolate, nuts, coconut and possibly liqourish. Beneath it all, a subtle amount of spice that comes from good old fashioned burley. Not to mention the thick, silky clouds of smoke (yes!) and room note so good, you could sink your teeth into it. For me, this is a must in my rotation. Highly recommended.
