The grassy, citrusy Virginia is the base of the blend. The nutty, earthy burley plays a support role. The unsweetened black cavendish adds a little brown sugar. The amaretto topping tones down the tobaccos a bit, but it lacks a little depth. The nic-hit is barely noticeable. Won’t bite, but will get slightly warm on the tongue if puffed fast. Burns fairly cool and clean at a reasonable pace once dried a little, and the flavor is consistent to the finish. Leaves some moisture in the bowl, and needs a few relights. Has a pleasant, very short lived after taste. An all day smoke. Two and a half stars.

Just the other day I swung into CR Butts a local discount tobacco retailer and ended up picking up a new Super Value aromatic blend for an amusing trial. It was only a couple of bucks so why not see what’s up with this one I thought. Super Value Amaretto, manufactured by Sutliff, is a light and airy fair consisting of Black Cavendish, Virginia Cavendish, and Burley. Time after time my trumpet of accolades sounds loudly for Sutliff as one of a few premier aromatic blenders. Generally, my experience has been very favorable no matter what I’ve tried.

A little moist, this thick-textured coarse ribbon cut has a pouch aura reminiscent of Old Toby having that pithy soaked, sweet buttery aroma. The scent of the fruity liqueur is not to be mistaken as it is heartwarming and immediately present. Oddly enough, there is an underlying note that favors the essence of a newly opened can of Play Doh. One does get just a slight suggestion of some very distant grassiness as well.

The topping rides in the forefront on this one in a gentle fashion. Being that Amaretto is thinner on alcohol content, the expected astringent spiciness is accordingly light in nature. Standing a little bit prouder is a succulent note of peachy/apricot sweetness. Laying on the bottom I find the shadowed characterization of tangy Virginia, and a sugary cocoanut taste mostly likely the fusion of the additive and the Burley. The native flavor attributes of the base tobaccos are much stronger on the retro-hale by far. The taste profile, although very mild, is essentially pleasing. Producing a dense body of smoke, the lingering room presence is very fleeting but nice while it lasts. The blend burns cool and can bite with too much vigor on the drawl.

An enjoyable aromatic diversion.
