Motzek Type 5 English Art

The dark fruity, earthy, lightly woody red and brown Virginias take a mild lead over the smoky, woody sweet Cyprian latakia. The Virginias also sport a very light floral, fermented note. The nutty, earthy, molasses sweet and lightly bready burley plays an important condimental role. The spicy, raisiny, plumy perique is present in every puff as it underscores the experience. The nic-hit is a tad closer to medium than it is to mild. Won’t bite or get harsh. The tobacco has a little dampness. Burns cool and clean at slightly less than a moderate pace with a mostly consistent, rich, slightly creamy flavor from start to finish. Leaves just a little moisture in the bowl, and needs some relights. Has pleasant, lingering after taste, and stronger campfire room note. Not quite an all day smoke, but it’s certainly repeatable. Three and a half stars.

I was given a sample of this blend by a forum friend who lives in Germany. He included it with some Strang. This is an earthy light English blend. The pouch note is a mixture of smoky Latakia mixed with an almost molasses aroma. The Virginias are darker - reds and browns - and I have yet to find a blend quite like it. You will need to dry it out some, because as with most Motzek blends, this stuff is fresh and needs some air time. After drying it, you'll find that it is a coarser ribbon cut that packs pretty well into most pipes. So far I've only had it in a Peterson 999 and a LHS Purex (which has a much smaller bowl than the Peterson). Both were enjoyable smokes to say the least. The smoke is thick but not oily, and the sweetness of the Virginias shines out among the smoky Latakia. I'm pretty sure I got a hint of Perique in there as well, but it could have been my palate playing tricks on me. The sweet tanginess of the darker Virginias give you flavors of hay, sweet molasses, and leather. The burley provides a nice nuttiness along with flavors of coffee and sweet toasted grains. The Latakia is smooth and not over-the-top. It burns down to a fine grey/white ash with very little dottle. I really wish I could make this an all-day smoke, but it is very expensive to get here in the U.S. If you're looking for a high-quality light English with a dark VA kick, then it is well worth the price.

Got to sample this tobacco recently and quite liked it. The unburnt aroma puzzled me though! It somehow smells florarl-ish, soap-y and almost like whipped cream. Not unpleasant, but different, than I was expecting it to be.

In the pipe Type 5 English Art is pretty Virginia forward, seasoned by the Latakia, which unobtrusive and light handedly applied. The taste is earthy, sweet, a bit floral, with some hay too it. The Latakia sports some mild smokiness and a salty character, reminding me of the sea.

Virginias and Burley dominate and are seasoned by the Latkia to make for a pleasant, mild and unobtrusive mixture that's easily an All-Day-Smoke, and perfect for people who want to try Latakia for the first time. The seasoned pipe-smoker might adore it for it's mild smoothness and the rather pleasant room-note. Spicy-sweet and smoky. A solid smoke, that's 3-star worthy to my palate!

I really enjoyed this blend, but found the name of English Art to be a little misleading. To my tastes and without looking at the contents or such, this tasted like a VaBurPer. I guess I sensed a smokiness, but found it more akin to the smokiness of Dark Fired Kentucky to that of Cyprian Latakia.

I guess you can say that the presence of latakia is very light, so much so that I questioned its existence altogether both in the tin (bag really) note or in the combustion of its contents. I think the star to my tastes was the burley and the Virginia. So much so that I would and did classify and group this blends with my VaBurs among my open containers. There is a nutty and earthy sweetness that runs deep in this one and there is a touch of spice from perique, but it is lightly applied.

I found it to be a very tasty blend somewhere between three and four stars. I am leaving it at three as it isn't Strang and it isn't (IMHO) a true English blend. I do however, understand that under the various definitions of English in our hobby, almost anything can be called English. I think the majority of us consider it a blend that primarily consists of Virginia, Latakia and Oriental.

I was given a rather large sample of Type 5, enough to smoke three bowls and a mini corn cob of this mixture. I totally agree with the reviewer who posted his statement before. The blend is very well selected to give a satisfying and balanced smoke, a nice virginia sweetness goes along with tasty, nutty bread flavours from the Burley. Topped with the perfect amount of Lat. Will order some for sure!
