The Virginia is a little grassy with a light citrus taste. The burley is nutty with some chocolate and a touch of earth, wood and molasses, along with a tart note here and there. A straight forward, uncomplicated all day VaBur that burns well, though it may need some hydration. Leaves virtually no moisture in the bowl. Hardly needs any relights, and produces a lot of smoke when you puff. Doesn't bite or get harsh, but I still recommend a moderate pace, especially if it's dry. Has a nice room note, and the after taste is fairly pleasant. Has a mild nic-hit. It's really a two and a half star mindless lawn mowing smoke, but it has enough going for it to recommend it for the price and the taste.
The pouch note is barely discernible chocolate and a little sweet. The tobacco is cut in long thin ribbons, and it comes from the bag at an excellent level of hydration for me.
Smoked, this is mild on mild. It is a pleasant light mix of nutty and grassy sweet. Puffed, there is a hint of tart. The flavor was consistent. It stayed lit and burned cool. Initially I liked the SP Rich Taste more, but really it may be a tossup. The Mellow has grown on me.
My wife has told me several times she likes the roomnote, but it is not topped or flavored.
In terms of value for the smoking dollar, this and Rich Taste are outstanding blends. Tobacco quality is good, and they are not goopy or pg laden. Mellow is a basic tobacco blend, but it is very good in a simple way. This is a 3.5 on the scale in that I have/will buy/smoke it by the pound.
For a bargain brand tobacco this ain't bad. It is a mellow blend with a taste and aroma much like PA or Carter Hall. It is a bit dry as it is more of a RYO than a pipe tobacco. It is good in a pipe though don't think it isn't. It is good dry if you add some moisture it will get even better. I bought a pound of this for less than $10 so I'm not going to complain. I use this in the summer when in the yard or puttering outside. At that price if I have to stop in the middle of a bowl I haven't lost a more expensive tobacco. If you are expecting anything other than a basic burley, Virginia you need to look elsewhere. That's what this is and exactly what it smokes like. Nothing frilly. Nothing fancy. A good smoke that let's the taste of the tobaccos come through with out covering them up with flavors or toppings.
These guys make all kinds of what they're calling pipe tobacco. I think it's more of a roll-your-own tobacco variety. It's not bad, but P.A. has this stuff beat. For the price though, it is what it is. A mild mellow sweet tasting tobacco that is more than affordable. I've had worse, and the worse cost more than this stuff.
