Julius Vesz C-8
(4.00)
Notes: Available in his shop on the ground floor of the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in downtown Toronto. Julius doesn't give too much away about who supplies his tobaccos (he mentions a family firm in the US) or what they contain (he just says Cavendish). but they are very very good. Julius is still going strong but into his eighties now - It would be nice to note for the historical record that he not only makes very fine pipes but also sells very fine "own brand" tobaccos.

Just before Christmas 2013, about 3 months into my reintroduction to pipe smoking, I became aware that there was a small shop across the road from my office in downtown Toronto. It is run by Julius Vesz, selling his hand crafted artisinal pipes, and complimented by a range of own brand tobaccos. I soon had a new Vesz briar in my hands, and 2 oz of this blend on his recommendation. This is a cavendish based cased blend, cased with I don't know what. But whatever it is, it is fantastic - to my inexperienced nose at the time, it smelt just the way pipe tobacco should smell!!! To my slightly more experienced nose today (10 months later), I would say it is a complex blend of rums, vanillas, and probably many other ingredients, brought together in a way that doesn't overpower at all, and nor is any one ingredient really coming to the forefront. On lighting, the smoke is smooth as silk, the flavor matches the unlit aroma but again is not overpowering - delicate and just right. It rarely needs a relight, keeps going at whatever pace you decide to smoke it, seems to overall smoke slow yet always leaves you wishing the bowl had lasted longer. Do you get the impression I like this tobacco? you would be right!!!! this was only the 5th blend i had tried at the time of purchase and it was a clear favorite. I am now up to around 40 different blends tried and this still sits right at the top of my favorites list. Goes well with a Vesz pipe.

Was in Detroit area visiting wife's family. Her uncle who is a big pipe smoker gave me a bit of this tobacco to try. He goes to Canada frequently on business and found a tobacco shop in Toronto that makes pipes and sells own brands. Well this stuff smells outstanding from the bag. He said it was a cavindish blend that was nice a sweet and mild. I am not a huge fan of mainly cavindish blends but this was simply outstanding. What a great room note and the taste is simply delicious. I could not believe how much sweetness there was to this blend. Burned very cool and not too much in the way of bite. I begged him to pick me up some the next time he was in Toronto. He asked me how much and I said how about five pounds!! It is that good and I hope he can get his hands on a couple of ounces for me.
