Sutliff Tobacco Company Match Bourbon Street

The original had a soapy, floral perfume topping that sublimated the mild bourbon as well as the other components. You could get a little nutty, earthy burley, a little grassy Virginia and sugary black cavendish note, and not much else. It also could be bitey is puffed fast. The bourbon in the Match is similar, but a little deeper in flavor. Barely floral, that disappears rather quickly in the Match, but stays longer in the original. The aforementioned aspects of the Virginia, and especially the burley are more prominent in the Match. The lightly sugary black cavendish is unsweetened. There are just a few Kentucky notes, and what Cyprian latakia is there is for smokiness, and not flavor. I never noticed the perique in either version so it must be in a very small quantity. The original was cube cut whereas the Match is coarse and cube cut, which makes the latter a cooler, slower smoke which is also slightly sweeter. This version won't bite. Both versions have a mild nic-hit, leaves a little dottle, and needs some relights. Has a decent after taste. Not really an all day smoke, but it's close.

I gave the original two stars. This gets two and a half.

My review is based on the tobacco itself with no recollection of ever having smoked the original.

The cut is a ribbon mostly. There are a few irregular pieces, and an assortment of brown and black tobaccos. The pouch note is a slightly sweet that is hard to identify. I would not call the pouch note bourbon, but I can believe it is there. There may be a hint of caramel.

Smoked, this tastes like a VaBur with unflavored black cavendish. There are a few hints of burley and Virginia. The Kentucky, latakia and perique have to be condimental, because I can't pick them out. The bourbon is in the snork and not in the taste. Smoking qualities were good, although the flavor turned a little sour in the last half of the bowl.

This was OK but a little uninspiring. I can believe it was an OTC without much of a following, but I can also believe it was an all-day smoke for a few people.

Pouch appearance of thick, crinkled chunks of mostly brown tobaccos, with very little black cavendish or Latakia.

Pre-lit aroma of mostly burley, with a beautiful nougat and slight evaporated bourbon note. It smells wonderful!

Due to the large cut of this tobacco, initial lighting can take a few tries due to the voids in the bowl. I learned to pack this one more firm than I tend to.

The first half of the smoke I get mostly burley forward flavors with nougat and a slight alcohol topping. Undertones of graham cracker, semi-sweet vanilla, and a touch of sour/musty Perique. It's faint on the draw, but it can be detected on the aftertaste. Some spice notes, I do have a difficult time detecting any Latakia, and the Kentucky must be non-existent. This blend produces clouds of smoke, which produce a nice room note. I mostly smoked this outdoors, and a few times in the truck.

Bourbon Street does require some attention, and will require a few relights, more than average. No hints at biting, but always puff slow. This can turn a bit rough and ashy if puffed with too much vigor. I think 6-12 months of age might do this blend well, I believe this may be very young tobacco, as its not as balanced as it could be.

Paired well with black coffee in the morning, and a glass of High West A Midwinters Night Dram

Match Bourbon Street, I understand, is suppose to be a match of Bond Street which is an old timey american mixture. Match Bourbon Street is mellow and sweet with hints of perique on the retrohale. Non flavored black cavendish keeps it nice and cool. There is a sweet top note that reminds me of nougat. It is priced really nice.

Of note, I saw old advertising from the 1940's that markets Revelation and Bond Street (Match Bourbon Street) together. The ad suggested that some users blend the two. I did this, and dang it, if it didn't turn out better than each mixture on its own.
