Pfeifen Huber Virginia Golden Flake

(3.89)
Georg Huber's personal Virginia specialty: three different Virginia tobaccos pressed and then cut into ribbon-flakes. Finally a little honey-flavour is added. This is an exclusive flake with a gentle aroma.

There’s some darker flake in the mix with the golden which offer a bit of very tart and tangy citrus, some bread, lots of straw and grass, as well as a little fermented tangy ripe dark, sugary fruit, sour lemon, earth, wood, graham cracker, and a pinch of spice, along with an occasional hint of tart sourness, smoke and acidity. The light honey dew and orange toppings contribute to the experience without muting the inherent characteristics of the Virginias. The strength level is a step past the center of mild to medium while the taste falls a hair short of medium. The nic-hit is in the center of mild to medium. No chance of bite or harshness, but there is a slight rough edge. The mildly moist flakes easily break apart to suit your preference. Burns cool, clean and a little slow with a very consistent, rich, deep flavor from top to bottom. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires some relights. Has a pleasantly lightly lingering after taste and room note. Can be an all day smoke. Formerly known as Virginia Honeydew Flake.

This stuff is amazing. Really a soft and gentle Virginia-ribbon. It reminds a little of Orlik Golden Sliced, a little less fruity, a bit sweeter. The honey is not overwhelming at all. I almost thought, i could taste a bit of Perique but i think the baccy is to mild. With Perique it would be more spicy. Maybe i should try to put some Perique in it, could become even better.

This flake tobacco comes in a single, long, mottled brown, rolled up strip, so you have to cut or tear off a slice that fits into your bowl. The tin note is dominated by pleasantly sweet, grassy, haylike Virginia scents with only a hint of honey.

I usually use the fold and stuff method for filling my pipe, because I find it gives you a cooler, more complex smoke than rubbed out. Like most flakes, lighting may require a little more time.

The taste, too, is lead by the tangy, natural sweetness and aroma of the Virginias grades in the blend reminding me of a freshly cut lawn. The sweet-tasting honey(dew) flavoring is noticeable, but subtle in the background rendering this a delicious, satisfying smoke. The tobacco burns down evenly and dryly to some light grey ash.

The room note is sweetish and rather pleasant.

I was given a nice sample of this by a pipe-colleauge and at first I wrote this off as some ChooChooTrain-alike and ChooChoo was a tad too sweet, a bit too less tobacco-y for me. But sticking my nose into the sample baggie a very natural scent is swirling out. Barely detectable a mild honey-note is present. Mostly unconspicious smell of tobacco-y Virginia.

The ribbon-flakes are lovely and quite a joy to handle.

On first light I instantly noticed the very mild honey flavoring in the back, as it was underscoring the bready, very grassy of fresh mown grass and mildly citrusy-tangy Virginia, which was slowly building up the listed aromas whilst the first few puffs. Evolving into a very tasteful Virginia melange that's really just speckled with dew of honey. This blend is not overly sweet and has decent spice to make this close to being full-bodied, yet mellow and smooth.

No rough edges, all is in balance and it never bites nor does it get harsh. Even tho this won't make a place in my daily rotation, I'll have to give it credits for being much more natural than ChooChoo Train who I ratet 3 stars. Tobacco underscored by a mild flavoring, not the other way round.

Slowly turning into a Virginia smoker, there’s no other explanation, they have been growing on me.

Presentation is impeccable Kohlhase & Kopp long flakes, similar to Rattray’s and HU Janneman flake. Smell from the tin is incredible. Sweet, grassy, spicy, with a whiff of orange in the tail. Among the best smelling blends I ever tried. I even asked some non-smoking friends to sniff and let me know what they thought. If this was a perfume I’d buy and wear it.

I am/was weary of straight Virginia because of my Capstan hot air experience, likely need to revisit it.

The taste is great, really great and complete. It doesn’t need Perique’s help I feel. It is not as sweet or light as I expected/feared, it has enough body to satisfy, and some nic, but as always it is the taste that matters.

The taste is bready, malty, sweet but not too sweet, somewhat tangy, with a hint of citrus on the tail (like the smell from the tin), some grass and a hint of tea. Very nice, straightforward and enjoyable. The strength and body pick up midway through the bowl, and the blend remains very enjoyable.

Will be getting a lot more.

I was not dissapointed that I tried smoking this blend. Mild aromatic and quite pleasant aftertaste. The virginias are nicely paired with the honey aroma, and might need a little drying before lighting. An all day smoke.

This is one of the best Virginia flakes I‘ve ever had. These long flakes are amazing. They smell sweet, a bit like honey, like citrus fruits and oranges. Almost the same can be found in taste. The Virginia adds a typical grass and hay flavor. From time to time the flake tastes a bit spicy. The hardly tastable oranges are maybe only delusion, because I can smell them and Pfeifen Huber states the honey orange flavor in the description of the tobacco. Anyway, this is a must try.

This blend is the benchmark of Pfeifen Huber.once the tin opens a spicy sweet honey and grass aroma comes out.simply wonderfull.the large flakes are folded into a nice presentation.mostly bright with some brown and dark spots, pefect in moisture with nice texture for rubbing.packing is easy and lighting also easy with a few relights needed.while smoking you realize how different varieties of virginias can be combined so well into a natural and pleasant smoking experience full of taste.grass, hey, citruses, spices and dark fruits are offered from the beggining till the end and all these accompanied from a very natural honey topping very discreet and pleasant through all the smoking proccess.burns at medium speed and medium hot to perfect ash with a lot moisture left at the end of the bowl and the filter.the nicotine level is almost medium with a sweet aftertaste.room note is ok with no chance of tongue bite though some harsh spots might appear if pushed hard.an all day smoke that can satisfy every virginia lover and compete all the famous virginia flakes.totally recommended.

Am I the only one who also sniffs a slight liquorice from the tin? I found that very enticing.

I cannot say that there's many virginia flakes under my belt but anyway this became my favourite upon first try. Bit tangy at first but picks up body as it goes and by the end of the bowl it's very mellow and balanced.

Really a fantastic blend.
