Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Brown Cavendish

This burley cavendish offers a fair amount of nuttiness, toast, some vegetation, earth and chocolate, and a few drops of molasses. In the background is a persistent floralness which likely comes from one of the burleys as G&H has several varietals with that essence. The sugar topping certainly adds to the sweetness, and tones down the tobaccos a mite as a smoothing agent, though a slight rough edge here and there remains. The nic-hit is mild to medium when you start and ends up at medium by the time you’re finished. The strength and taste thresholds gather strength as well, starting out as medium, and passing that mark in the last third of the experience. No chance of bite or harshness. Burns cool at a reasonable pace with a moderately smooth, mostly sweet, consistent flavor all the way through. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. Has a pleasant after taste, and a sweet, floral room note. Can be an all day smoke, or a mixer if it suits you.

Well, what a surprising smoke! This is more of a blending tobacco but I think you're missing a treat by not smoking this neat! Out of the pouch mine required a bit of drying time, we're not talking 'saturated' but it's just a little too moist. The aroma coming from this certainly is enticing, a sweet nutty Burley smell. The taste of this is like a nutty fiesta, I get a superb nuttiness with a scintillating chocolaty sweetness on top. Brown Cavendish contains a healthy nicotine amount, if I were to use this for bulking out an existing blend I would make sure what I were adding it to required 'N' ! A bowl of this burns superbly all the way through, coupled with the fact the smoke is quite cool it makes for a relaxing smoke. The room note from this is quite a delight, very full of flavour indeed.

As I said at the start, "what a surprising smoke", I really had no expectations for this when it arrived but when I took the first puff I really was impressed

I smoked G&G Brown Cavendish a few years ago after finally getting a sample from my swap mate overseas. I could not find it anywhere on US soil. This tobacco is plain and simple a toasted Burley that has been sweetened just slightly. Imagine your favorite unflavored Burley that has been sprinkled by a light touch of brown sugar. And Lordy, this one packed one sweet punch in the nicotine department! Could be smoked all day, if sipped rather than gobbled. Otherwise, your craving for nicotine will be relieved in a hurry with this bad boy.

I originally first purchased some of this back when it became available, to experiment with, in spicing up English blends, which are my primary smoke. But this makes for a very good smoke all on its own. It is an earthy burley cased in a very light maple, and has some of the same tastes as MacBaren's various rollcakes such as club blend - but is a much richer tobacco.

There is an barely noticeable spice element which reminds me of halloween gingerbread houses, which is probably from the processing, not the topping, which is mostly sugar.

This blends very well with some of the more monotonous English blends as well as smokier ones, to give them more complexity. It of course does technically turn them into a "scottish" blend, but some blends just need it. I have found it conflicts somewhat with oriental forward blends however, so some discretion is needed, and I leave it up to every piper's ingenium as to which blend needs it.

As for me, I really enjoy this straight on a cool dark evening as it really sets the mood for the evening on cooler days. There is something old fashioned about a sugar cased burley, and this might appeal to those of us who enjoyed edgeworth and other blends of that manner.

The room note is a little strong but unobtrusive which makes this a good candidate for someone who wishes to smoke indoors, but still wants a good nicotine kick (at least in a larger bowl) while not coming out smelling like cigarettes, which even the best virginias tend to do. This being entirely burley it is far less offensive on the nose.

A rock solid 4 star blend which should appeal to aromatic, burley, and blenders/experimenters alike.

In a word, innocuous. This is a fast-burning, one-note tobacco. Of course, that one, slightly chocolatey sweet note could easily be one that you really like, and if so, this would be a good one to try. If you find it merely pleasant, this could easily be added to a hasher blend to calm it down. For me, I would use it in just that way if I had a number of blends to doctor or play around with. Home blenders should probably have it in their blending lab.

This is a great smoke both alone and as a mixer.

Alone: Sweet, nutty Burley. Unadulterated Burley flavor. More nutty than earthy, in fact, very little earthiness at all. Very nice. Has some strength to it. Very satisfying. Added sweetness is mild and to my taste just right.

As a mixer: If mixed with a sweet Bright Virginia it gets just a little too sweet for me. I like it better with a tangy Red. That's a great VaBur. It's also good with just a pinch of Latakia or Perique. Haven't tried it with both yet, but that's next.

I really like having some of this around. It's very handy for "repairing" blends as well as creating your own. I've used it a couple of times just to add a little sweetness or strength to blends that I found lacking with good results. This is now a must have for me. Great stuff.

Medium in body. Nic is med/strong. Flavoring (sweetness) is mild. Taste is medium to full. Burns very well.

I am not a fan of burley tobacco but, based on the reviews here, I decided to give GH Brown Cavendish a try ... and I'm glad I did.

I said I'm not a fan of burley's but that's not entirely correct. Over the years, I have found a few that I like and what they all have in common is a deep, rich, nutty, molasses, cocoa flavor. GH BC was this in abundance. However, in order to experience it, one must sip this tobacco. If you puff on it too hard, it tends to become harsh and cigarette-like.

As others have noted, GH BC is quite strong in the vitamin N department but, again, if you smoke it slowly, this does not present a problem. Unlike other reviewers, I did not detect much in the way of flavoring, nor did I taste much sweetness, but It has a bit of the spiciness of dark burley, which I presume is present in the blend. The tobacco is easy to light and keep lit, and the flavor is fairly consistent from start to finish. It burns cleanly to a light grey ash leaving the bowl dry.

I bought a half pound of this stuff to blend with other tobaccos, but I have a feeling I'm going to end up smoking a good bit of it straight up.

This is a good 'un. Rich tasting, somewhat nutty and chocolatey, with just a hint of sweetness. Don't make the mistake of thinking it a pale version of a typical Black Cavendish; smoked on an empty stomach and one will soon find out it has its fair share of nicotine. There some flavour notes that can be found in GH's Kendal Mixed and Dark blends, I find.

Brown Cavendish is an honest, good tobacco that doesn't need to be blended to be enjoyed.
