The tangy ripe dark fruity red Virginias provide some earth, a pinch or two of spice and sugar. Being that this is undoubtedly McClelland’s 5100, you won’t be surprised to get the “vinegar” essence that is more obvious when you smell it than when you smoke it, and it doesn’t stay long even then. Has a mild nic-hit. Won’t bite or get harsh. May need a light dry time. Burns cool, clean, and a little slow with a very consistent flavor. Leaves a little moisture in the bowl, but no dottle, and requires a few relights. Has a very pleasant after taste, and can be both an all day smoke as well as a mixer.

A very good naturally sweet red Virginia smoke. This tobacco is sold by Havana Connections with various stores in Eastern Virginia. According to a rep at the 2014 CORPS show, this mixture combines several different crops of red Virginia and is produced for the firm by McClelland.

The tobacco shows as a mixture of reddish brown to very dark, I think toasted, Virginia tobaccos. It is a fully rubbed out Virginia cake cut into mostly shortish pieces. The website listing shows this as a ribbon tobacco, but that is not how I found it. A few stems pieces were found. McClelland 5100 Red Cake is very close to this mixture. This blend is real easy on the tongue and rather creamy which are the distinct attributes that make me want to have it on hand.

As of September 2015 it is only available in bulk despite the website listing for tins. Formerly it was available in tins (and may be in the future, per the CORPS show rep). If interested a call or visit to the Short Pump store may be more reliable than ordering online with its tin pricing, at least till the website is updated. Shockoe Valley is the name of a former tobacco warehouse district in Richmond. Overall 3 stars plus.
