One of our more full bodied blends, similar to many expensive English blends. This blend is so carefully constructed that its Perique and Latakia components compliment each other perfectly.

Notes: Peretti's "British." Blended first in 1922, this tobacco is the first commercially produced English mixture in the States.

Despite what Thomas Wolfe wrote, you can go home again! This blend is a dead ringer of a favorite English blend I purchased regularly in the ?70s from the small chain of now defunct Brick Church Pipe Shops in ?Joisey.? This is a classic English blend that is extremely well balanced, moderately sweet, and with a smooth, even taste that never grows wearisome. It has excellent burning qualities (as do most English blends) that leaves hardly, if any, dottle. The various tobaccos present a nice, mottled appearance with a pouch aroma that is most pleasant and unique. Both of these characteristics gave me the first inkling that this was or might be the old Brick Church blend I was so fond of. Actually smoking a bowl confirmed it. I feel 30 years younger smoking this stuff! I have found my ?fountain of youth,? or I should say, ?Tobacco of youth.?

A cigarette is to be smoked. A cigar is to be enjoyed. A pipe is to be savored.

I rate this tobacco 9.5 out of 10.

This is a blend that I buy in 1/2 pound or 1 pound tins. Like all their blends, the tin tops are the traditional ones that require a coin or knife-edge to open, and the the tins have the same yellow label with a handwritten blend name and the blenders initials. I like this! No fancy marketing slogans or advertising gimmicks. With L.J.'s, it is always about the quality of the tobacco, and the blender's art and skill. Enough of my loyalty, on with the review.

This is one of the first Peretti blends that I tried in the early eighties. An extremely smooth satisfying smoke that never bites nor tires. A high quality virginia/perique blend with just the right amount of latakia. It lights easily and seldom needs a relight. It burns to grey/white ash with no excessive moisture in the heel. A subtle spicyness throughout the run of the bowl.

If you haven't tried any blends by this tobacconist, and you are an avid pipe smoker, you are definitely missing out.

Presentation is the typical Peretti ribbon cut, about half light brown shades of leaf and the rest increasingly darker with the few bits of black. Tin note is slightly sweet and vaguely floral and while I agree with most of the very good reviews of this blend, I’m apparently the only one who believes there is a hint of unflavored cavendish (or perhaps even a pinch of deer tongue?) mixed in: classic old-school American/English style. There’s some secret ingredient here, similar to Wilke’s Royal Scot conservatively and tastefully added to many of their English blends. Like all Peretti English and Balkan blends, this one arrives at the perfect moisture content and is ready to smoke upon arrival.

Chars and lights easily and stays lit. The first few puffs reinforce my view of that tiniest pinch of cavendish, but the main English ingredients quickly introduce themselves. While certainly a medium English in terms of strength, there’s nothing “medium” here in terms of depth of flavor- there is plenty of complexity there for the contemplative taster with surprisingly and overtly peppery Perique; mellow, muted Virginia’s (just the way I like them in an English blend); fragrant Orientals and dusky Latakia blended to perfection. While I realize I sound a bit like the blender’s description, it truly is a harmonious blend and one would have a hard time topping it with any of the more popular and commonly available tinned options that abound. A reviewer mentioned that this would be a fantastic introduction to English blends but I’m not so sure about that. While the blending is Peretti-perfect with tamed Virginia and this blending house’s trademark gorgeous Orientals, and while, like all Peretti blends, the smoke is dry and the flavor consistent, the Perique here, particularly in the first third of the bowl, may be a bit much for those unaccustomed to or otherwise not fond of the Spice. As such, one of Peretti’s other English offerings, sans Perique, may be a better introduction to the genre.

In short, this is Royal with the addition of Perique. And it works. All of Peretti’s English, Oriental and Balkan mixtures are variations on a theme, and what a glorious theme it is. Cool- and dry-smoking, flavorful and with absolutely no bite, there’s not much here to dislike, even for this peculiar smoker who generally isn’t fond of the Oriental-Latakia-Perique pairing. Peretti manages to pull this off with balance and grace. Support one of the few remaining boutique blending houses and try this blend. Add some Tashkent into your sampler, one of their world-class burleys, and whatever else strikes your fancy. You won’t regret it.

I've started getting into english blends more, and this stuff is prime. Very cool smoke, and it burnt very well. I smoked it while fishing, and had no trouble balancing the two.(Also tasted great later with the bass we caught!) Very low maintinence. I smoked it down to the bottom without a second light. Great taste, light and honest. I detected only a slight change of taste throughout the bowl, which is nice. Packs surprisingly well. Leather, hickory-smoke and cinnamon aroma in the pouch. Tastes like it smells in the pouch pretty much, only not quite as strong on the hickory, and a little more sweetness from the perique and the burning of the VA, especially noticed the sweetness when exhaling through the nose. Dedicated a pipe to it. Worth every cent.

Pouch appearance of half light tobacccos, 1/4 black, and 1/4 dark brown.

I'm detecting a floral/mint flavoring and aroma in this as well, but not near as strong as 9507. Packs and lights fairly easy, initial lighting only takes 2 matches.

This blend stays even throughout the bowl. Floral, spicy Perique, and mild smokiness from the Latakia. I do not detect any sweetness from the included Virginias at all. Burns down to a dark gray ash, all the while cool and clean, no hints of biting. I really don't see this a a full bodied blend, but something that you could smoke a few times a day without being overwhelmed.

British Blend is a solid offering from Peretti's. It burns cleanly and packs well. My issue with British Blend is that in a world that offers lots of choices, this falls somewhere safely in the middle. It just doesn't stand out enough to make it into my regular English rotation. I am going to cellar some as I think some additional age will serve it well. Three stars.

I love Peretti tobacco's:cut, top note, leaf quality and blender's art...however this one is not my favorite. British blend is too sibtle for me. It is almost tasteless other than the peppermint topping that is signature to Peretti. From tin note to the bottom of the bowl. I get a hint of grass and qood from the VA and Oriental, the Latakia is unnoticeable but for a mild swetness. I am almost trough 2 oz's and have another 8 oz tin and will see what it is loke with some age but in the mean time I will stick to #8 slices, Omega and D 7485 among others

Opening the bag of mixed of ribbons of various colors, medium brown with smatterings of black and darker brown with specs of yellow here and there, I was greeted by the musty, sour, smokey goodness of any excellent English blend. The sour smell was mixed with a bready type of sweetness. Smelled wonderful.

I ordered the famous Peretti thanksgiving blend and decided I’d get a sampler or two of theirs, since I have only had their thanksgiving blend.

I tried the British blend from their English sampler. Wow!! Very impressive! Good quality tobacco. Took a bit to keep lit but was an amazing smoke. Good Smokey English with plenty of nuttiness, incense like spice from the orientals, and had the right amount of sweetness from the virginias to accompany the other flavors. There also seems to be a sweet/sour combination that is amazingly good, i think the combo of the Perique and VAs. This blend was smooth as a baby’s bottom. Reminds me of somewhere between Potlach and PS English luxury, but not quite. There was something a bit different, something more, and can’t put my finger on it. Loved it! Will be getting more and looking forward to try the others in the sampler.

Bought this at the Peretti store in Boston in one of my visits and was told that this is the oldest English blend sold in the U.S. Had to take a taste of history.

Tin note is musty, smoky Latakia which is perfectly balanced with the spicy Perique and some sweetness from the Virginia. Slightly perfume and floral notes from the Balkan leafs.

It's a high quality blend that would be considered by many as an example of how a Latakia blend should be. Full flavored, distinctly sour-sweet, with great spiciness coming out, especially when retro-haling.

Easily packed and smoked, no relights, doesn't get hot in the bowl, and great all-day for those who like Latakia as an all-day despite the full flavor and certain complexity. This is not a G.L Pease type of English, but more old-style Dunhill.

3.5 stars, only because 4 is reserved for the absolutely best. But this one is definitely up there touching the greatest.

L.J. Peretti blending is superb. I bought the English sampler as I prefer Balkan and English blends. The sampler came with British blend, Centry, Royal and Omega. All are fine blends in there own right, however, British blend is a real winner in my opinion. The others seem a little to oriental foward for my liking. Everything in this blend shines and not one out does the other. There is a certain sweetness in here that calms everything down. There is no bitterness or overpowering leaf to dominate the others. If you were to show a new piper an English, this would be the one. This burns to a nice almost white ash with no moisture throughout the bowl. The old timers knew what they were doing when they blended this. I will be ordering more as this has moved to my top five blends. Highly recomended!

A lifelong Cavendish smoker, I recently decided it was time for a change. I have on many occasions tried English blends, usually prepackaged brands like Nightcap, but always found them to be too strong for my palate. Plus my system can't take the big nic hit. Then I stumbled on this blend. It hits the spot perfectly. Very nice blend of Latakia and a bit of Perique. Strong enough to satisfy, but not so strong that it overwhelms. I only wish I had discovered this blend years ago.

Let me first say, Highest Recommendation! This blend is perfectly balanced. The Perique is judiciously placed, the VAs seemed to be just a little more dominant, the Turkish and Latakia are wonderful in their presence. Excellent burning qualities due to the perfect moisture content and tons of rich smoke emanated from my pipe. Very full bodied and there is some good strength behind this Brit. Excellent value from some master blenders. This is done right! PTLOG

Peretti has a magical way with Burley and a competent way with English blends. British Blend best exleplifies this. For an affordable, satisfying Latakia/Turkish tobacco, it works. For a truly exemplary specimen of the genre, it is lacking. I one wants to taste Peretti's best in this type of tobacco, I strongly recommend Royal Blend.

Not that there is anything objectionable about British Blend...there is simply nothing exemplary about it. One could do as well with ALMOST any bulk English blend. C&D's Plantation Evening or Peretti's own Prince of Wales leap to mind, as does Lane's bulk version of Crown Achievement. I think British Blend aimed at Dunhill's REAL English Blend-Medium, not the sorry stuff available today. If that is indeed the case, then the Peretti boys came pretty close.

The pouch aroma promises more than the smoke delivers...there are hints of leather and cinnamon on first whiff...but they get buried in the smoke.

As this (like most House of Peretti blends) was conceived in the long-ago, perhaps the original Latakia was Syrian instead of Cyprian. That would make a HUGE difference, though without the Syrian version to compare it with...this is only speculation.

This will suffice for ANY English smoker--but completely satisfy only a few.

Two out of four stars.

This is a smokey blend of high quality leaf and by smokey i don't mean latakia laden. The latakia used here is very sparingly and adds to the aroma and sweetness. The almost medium spicey, woody, and slightly soapy floral taste is the result of the turkish, perique and virginia tobaccos mingling and intertwining. There is a slight but noticeable topping and at first i thought it was a floral, citrus, soapy combination but once you realize that it is peppermint it kind of sticks with you and you taste it almost every puff. There is a slight sweetness to the taste but it can turn bitter without proper cadence. I rate the overall strength of taste and mouth feel as a notch below medium. The nic strength less than that but more than mild. It will not be a rebuy for me as there are much more flavorful englishes out there and some darn good ones made by L.J.P. that are more suited to my tastes. A 2 star tobacco for me but if you are looking for nearly undetectable latakia and a bit of spicey synergy between the leaves and slight peppermint topping this one may be for you.

A very nice straight forward English blend. Has all the regular tobaccos plus the Perique is just the right amount for a little added kick. Good all day smoke.

Update: Been smoking this all week as my main tobacco. And it has grown on me. Has a mild sweetness to it. The Perique doesn't bite but is just there in the background. It is now number 2 on my list of Peretti tobaccos. Omega is number one.

The Brit's can keep this blend. The flavor and aroma were quite flat even with the addition of perique. This blend smoked slowly and did not produce a good volume of smoke...partly due to a higher latakia content. This came to me pretty dry but I am going to let this get closer to bone-dry and see how it smokes later. For someone who likes this blend it would be a good keeper since its not that expensive which is a plus in the current economy and anti-smoking climate....24 bucks for 8 ounces. If I end up not liking this I will keep it in a zip-lock bag and let the nice unlit aroma condition the air in my cellar (the bottom drawer in my nightstand..I love the smell of Latakia even if its in a blend I don't care for).

This is a quality English Blend tobacco. This has a little too much peppery taste for my liking. I currently smoke Penzance about 95% of the time, but Peretti's British Blend is a nice change of pace from time to time. Lights easily and stays lit. Burns right down to the bottom of the bowl, with no tongue bite whatever. The flavor is very pleasant. The Perique is prominent through the first half of the bowl, then quiets down. This is a full bodied English tobacco with Perique and Latakia which are blended perfectly. The wife does not object to the room note, which is another plus.

This is the perfect all-day smoke as far as I am concerned, if I was the type of person to choose an all-day smoke (I like to mix things up a lot, usually). The flavor reminds me almost of toast. It is mouth-watering. The tobaccos I usually smoke tend to coat your mouth and leave a thick flavor, which I enjoy qutie a bit, but some times in the morning I feel like being able to smoke a pipe and then eat breakfast and actually taste it. If after a late night your mouth is feeling a little grimy but you really want to light up, this is perfect. Wonderful in the morning with coffee.

Well I guess the secrets out on L. J. Pertti. Located in the oldest part of downtown Boston,I belive this establishment has been around since the Revoluntionary War. Having frequented this fine establishment since 1970, I've smoked quite a few of their blends and have come to the conclusion that that the Peretti Family is incapable of making a bad tobacco blend. British Blend is my all time favorite English type. Various types of Virginias comprise it's foundation with Cyprian Latakia and Perique added in an exquisite balanced manner to give this blend a unique flavor. Highly recommended.

This packs well though quite dry when it came to me, not unusual for an English or Peretti's which ships, IMO, at the perfect moisture level. Nice volume of smoke, creamy. The first half of the bowl was very nice, but it seemed to get a little harsh toward the bottom. A good blend, however, to be sure.

After liking Pretti's Cuban Mixture so much, I decided to pick up a can of their British Blend at the Chicago Pipe Show. This is an excellent English blend, that is overlooked in the vast array of tobaccos today. Spicy Orientals, along with matured VA and a perfect balance of perique and latakia. I think I really like this blend because I do like the flaovr of perique. It burns cool with no tounge bite, and smokes down to a nice grey ash.

I find myself smoking this blend almost every day. While not a Westminister or Vintage Syrian, it's a great every day smoke. If your looking to replace Dunhill's Nightcap, which is not being sold in bulk again, this is a close match and less costly!

Not only is this an excellent blend, but I rank it at the top of LJP?s English mixtures. The base tastes mainly of bright and aged Viginias. There are also some quality Orientals, but they are not the focus. The star of this blend is the Latakia and Perique, which ?complement each other perfectly?. Thought the taste is full, no single component overwhelms. Simply put, the blend smokes cool and is rich in flavor. Its amazing young and only improves with age. Four full stars for Robert Perretti?s wonderful, traditional blend.
