Peretti Black Virginia

(3.45)
A new treat for the smoker who likes a tobacco rich in flavor and aroma. An unusual black tobacco which has been fire-cured and flavored with vanilla.

Imagine you are used to coffee that is from slightly above average beans, but exquisitely prepared with beautiful cream, and exactly the right amount of sugar and nutmeg. That is like the Newminster No. 47 and Peter Stokkebye 47 that are my previous mainstay and go-to for cavendish. By comparison, this custom-blend is like having a latte that is expertly made AND brewed from exquisitely mellow and flavorful beans, but comes served with barely enough sugar to notice. It is beautiful, but a change of pace from your typical flavored aromatic. I didn't set it out to dry, I wanted to test it straight away as is. It was slightly more damp than my usual cavendish, but all the same, the somewhat rough cut charred absolutely beautifully. It needs relights more often than the ribbon cavendish I have, (but they don't need any relight). It burned cool. The ash burns finely and beautifully, so when you do have to relight, take some time to spoon out a bit of the ash, let the bowl go cold, and the flavor will thank you.

The smoke is velvety thick and beautiful, especially on first light. The flavor is best in somewhat longer than normal draws, and a good robust char will give you the real flavor here. The casing I could only taste in the first few moments. The room note, however is SO astoundingly lovely. I couldn't imagine anyone complaining about it indoors. You detect the vanilla there, and it is astoundingly good.

The only thing preventing me from giving this a TOTALLY glowing review is that I wish the flavoring were cased a bit more heavily. You can't really taste it, (though I am using a 9mm charcoal filter) even though the pouch note vanilla is actually more pronounced than the sweet smell on the two blends I mentioned above.

Keeping on the coffee analogy, this is not an espresso. If you want some strong kick and flavor, go for a dunhill. This has barely any noticeable nicotine early on in the bowl, which I actually really like about it. The bottom of the bowl as usual packs a tighter punch if you are into that.

The subtle flavor of the leaf is astounding. The cavendish blends I mentioned above about halfway through go slightly acrid and get a sharp almost chemical "cheap cigar" taste, and it is not at all as bad as I'm making it sound, but the shift happens. -- With this one, you get a very mellow "good cigar" taste as the bowl develops, and it never goes sharp on you. There is no bite. There is not even the ghost of bite.

Your mileage may vary if you order it, but this is VERY highly recommended. I got it out of the store tin, and it may well have some of that lovely subtle flavor from aging in there for a while. Who's to say?

The layers of flavor in this are really beautiful. If it had a bit of a sweeter flavoring, I'd call this absolutely perfect. As it stands, I'm going to stock up on it anyway.

Update: I raised this to full stars after trying a few bowls. I don't know if my palette adjusted, or if I got a better pinch of the tobacco after it being sealed in my glass jar for about a week, but the casing flavor was more noticeable, and subtle and perfect. It fact that wonderful room note was so good that on my first evening in my new home here in Italy, I had a pipe of it at a cafe. The owner came by and asked if my meal was ok then he remarked that he really enjoyed the smell of the pipe! He was of course being welcoming to a new foreign customer, but his comment was genuine. This is my new favorite blend. All around, it delivers in the ways I want, so glad I found it.

I'm not a huge fan of aromatics. That having been said, I have a growing admiration for Peretti tobaccos, so I was inclined to try this aromatic. I wasn't disappointed in the slightest.

One of the problems that often dissuades smokers from trying aromatics is that many of them use inferior leaf, relying on flavorings to mask the shortcomings of the tobacco. Not so in this case. This is good tobacco, and it shows. The flavoring (vanilla I think) seemed strong on smelling the pouch, however I found it very well balanced on smoking. I dried it for two hours, however I don't think this blend will ever truly dry naturally due to the amount of propylene glycol it has. It didn't seem to affect the taste, though. Still, I would have added a bit less--I like to dry more "noble" aromatics to mellow out the flavorings and let the tobacco through.

Despite feeling moist, the blend burned well all the way through, needing no re-lights. I did grind it up somewhat between my fingers prior. Also, it didn't goop up my pipe as I'd feared it might. Among the simple aromatics, I'd consider this to be a very good quality one.

My experience with other Peretti blends as far as after-taste is the same with this blend. Magically, no Pertetti blend I've smoked so far leaves any after-taste, nor does it irritate my tongue or give me a cough. I have no idea how they pull this off. Perhaps they spare the addition of other chemicals, or use organic tobacco. All guesses.

Good stuff. Good quality. Excellent choice for someone who wants an aromatic without fouling up a good pipe.

I have been smoking this stuff for 30 years. It is very mellow and never bites. I particularly enjoy it in the morning with my coffee and a bit of jazz in the background. Makes for a very relaxing start to the day. I had given up smoking the pipe for a while, but once I returned this is the blend I was looking for. Peretti's has been a Boston institution for a very long time. My dad introduced me to the place when I was a young man. I have done the same for my son. I hope the tradition continues for generations to come.

This is my go-to aromatic. A bit linear as some in the cigar world like to say, this is nonetheless a solid all-around tobacco. It starts out with sweet vanilla and toasty tobacco flavors underneath. As the bowl burns down, caramelized sugars come out more heavily and a certain smokiness builds, creating a slightly fuller-bodied taste. A very moist tobacco, Black Virginia nonetheless burns beautifully, requiring very few relights after a couple initial charring burns.

BV is the only aro I can smoke without getting a nasty metallic taste and feeling in the mouth. However, it is a little too sweet for my taste, therefore, I blend it 75/25 with Peretti's 1072. Fabulous! That small amount of burley does wonderful things to this tobacco. I've even tried it with Carter Hall with good results.

Amazing room note. Burns very well. Flat taste profile but not necessarily boring; just a very mild smoke with a slightly sweet taste. My 5 year old said it smelled like marshmallows!

This is now my favorite vanilla aromatic. Sweet vanilla taste throughout, but most importantly, not too sweet. Just right. Rich, smooth taste of the tobacco underneath. The blend was moist and I could make out at least two different tobaccos. The burn was smooth and cool right to the end of the bowl. No problem with tongue bite.

A very relaxing, mellow and flavorful blend. I usually smoke English blends and enjoy aromatics now and then to mix things up. Four stars.

Good virginia blend, with a subtle vanilla flavor that not seems artificial at all. Despite you don't like aromatics, you have to give this blend a chance.

If you think this is BCA you'd be close but incorrect. It is rather like Lane BCA but as another has mentioned, this tobacco isn't as sweet as the Lane tobacco. Black Virginia let's the taste of the leaf through. Sure, it's stoved and lightly vanilla flavored but not over done. This tobacco burns incredibly dry and leaves the bowl without a sticky mess. The flavor is light vanilla, Virginia, and a deep spice that all comes together to make this an amazingly good blend.

This has really grown on me. It is supposed to be Virginia (it's listed under Peretti's "Cavendish Blends") but it is cut very fine. It reminds me of BCA, but it is not as sweet, and it has a nice tobacco taste underneath the vanilla. It is really wet out of the bag, and it stays wet even with drying time. It smokes bone dry though, with a nice ash, maybe because of the cut. There is surprisingly minimal dottle. I do not smoke many AROs, but this is a nice change of pace. Great flavor, sweet, but pleasant. It will absolutely ghost your pipe, so use the pipes that you dedicate to AROs.
