Sutliff Tobacco Company Burley Delight #212

(3.18)
Choice Burley is punctuated with a smattering of Virginia to give this fine blend its sweet character. The sweetness of the Virginia compliments a slight chocolate note to create a most satisfying smoke.

The star component is burley, which is nutty, woody and a little earthy with some molasses, and oats. It also has slight sharp and spicy notes. There’s a small amount of light Virginia with a little grass and a bit of citrus. The chocolate has a little richness and is mildly applied, toning down the tobaccos just a little. The strength is a couple of steps past the mild mark, while the taste is in the center of mild to medium. The nic-hit is mild. Burns at a reasonable pace, cool, clean, a little creamy with a very consistent flavor from start to finish. Won’t bite or get harsh even if pushed. Leaves just a little dampness in the bowl, and requires few relights. The lightly lingering after taste is pleasant. An easy going all day smoke that wears well throughout your day. Three and a half stars.

Side note: this is not Mac Baren Burley London Blend, though they have some things in common.

Very nice smoke. The Burley and the chocolate flavoring are delicious. The chocolate is lightly done. The Virginias add a nice sweetness, but can sting at times. No bite, but a light sting. For those who are really susceptible to bite you may have some trouble with this one. Medium bodied with medium flavor.

MacBaren owns Sutliff. This blend is so similar to MacBaren's Burley London Blend that it makes me wonder if they aren't the same. Just a thought. Both are available in bulk with the Sutliff version 45 cents per ounce cheaper.

I am a burley lover, and this tobacco is right up my alley. Lights easily, smokes without a hint of bite, very few relights, and leaves me pleasantly relaxed. When smoking it, I was reminded of Cicero's sage advice for a life marked by otium cum dignitate, and this tobacco does it. The slight hint of cocoa/chocolate sweetens the natural sourness of Burley. Not at all certain how they came by the name, but if it means that they made 211 attempts before hitting on this one, then I'd say they really got it right. A great tobacco for an all day smoke, and one that will certainly be a part of my regular rotation.

Sutliff Tobacco Company - Burley Delight #212.

On appearance #212 looks like a medium brown, fairly robust, blend of ribbons. 'Robust' as in most of them are medium in size, but there are a few twigs, and some pieces identifiable as being broken flakes. It smells lightly flavoured.

The aromatics are only a mild appurtenance, I get neither too much chocolate sweetness, or any rich dark chocolate bitterness, it gives only a delicate note. Where the tobaccos are concerned the Burley gives far more character than the Virginia. The Virginia isn't 'lost', but a lot milder; it gives a slight sweetness which marries up with the chocolate note nicely. The burn from #212 has mostly pros, but one con. Pros: even, consistent, fairly cool. Con: way too fast.

The room-note: pleasant to tolerable. Nicotine: medium.

If it weren't for the burn this would get a full score, but because of the speed a star gets deducted. Three stars:

Recommended.

This is a burley without a lot of fanfare - I mean that in a good way. A good tobacco that reminds you of slowing down and to enjoy what pipe smoking ought to be- A kick back relaxing experience. Great even burn to the end. I didn't pick up on the noted flavors but I didn't need to. It was just a good burley smoke. Earthy and grounded just like it smelled when I broke open the jar. Burns down clean and pretty fast - even when nursing it. This is a no frills good smoke. When you want to shelve the aros and drop the latakia, this may be a nice retreat to a good ole smoke.

Burley Delight is another one of many ordinary nutty, woody, earthy burley blends. A condimetal amount of Virginia tobacco is present. It’s natural sweetness works well to smooth out any harshness. I also sense notes of chocolate and vanilla. Thankfully they do not overwhelm the burley. This blend works best when smoked slowly.

This might be best described as a Prince Albert "light." It Is slightly milder in terms of strength and a little less edgy when puffed. It is a mellow/smooth smoking experience. I get nutty burley and a mild cocoa in terms of taste.

The smoking experience is pleasant but not very exciting. I find this to be an excellent smoke in the car for the commute.

This stuff quickly dries out in the pouch, so keep an eye on hydration.

This is one of those things that could have been a classic "all-day" pouch blend. It is good, and might be a great choice for someone looking for reliable and not too complex.

Bought 2ozs of this looking for a summertime all day smoke. Loads and lights easily. Burns cool. Good Burley upfront with sweetness of Virginia in background. Very light cocoa/chocolate. Nice blend and will recommend for Burley lovers. Got this and revelation at same time and like revelation better for what I'm looking for.

There is nothing objectionable about this tobacco. It is a cool, mild, trouble-free smoke. A "no-brainer," as it were. But so are a lot of other blends, and many of those offer a couple of things that this blend does not: flavor and satisfaction. This is burley, but without depth and earthiness that good burleys provide. And I am a burley lover!

Another reviewer likened this to Granger, and that is definitely an apt comparison. But it doesn't have Granger's distinctive taste or nicotine kick. But it does remind me of Granger. A late friend of mine used to smoke a 50-50 mixture of Granger and Bond Street, for decades, and it was mighty tasty!

I'll see how this works as a blender, but will not order it again.

I really do not detect much of a chocolate or cocoa flavoring. To me its a more fermented, slight sour taste with a slight spicy sting. I find this blend very similar to Granger. If you are a fan of Granger ( like me) than give this a try. You can pick up a pound in bulk for about the same price as a 12oz tub of Granger.
