(3.50)
This interesting blend produced in a traditional English way convinces by it's unique character. The tobacco is traditionally pressed, cut and roasted and processed in a sophisticated manner. It's blended with Oriental, Louisiana perique, the finest latakia and aromatic Virginia tobaccos which make this blend a classic experience of English style. An exquisite tobacco for friends of handmade flakes.

This tobacco seems to receive no discussion and was never listed on TR so I have added it. Despite the fact that the country of origin says DE, it is made in Germany, I put that in the detail background but the computer software won't co-operate.

This comes in 100gr. paint can tins, a packaging I really like as it seems to keep things fresh and can be re-used for other like tobaccos. If you have smoked CF Lancer's Slices and said to yourself, "I wish this was a bit more refined", here is the blend you seek. A latakia broken flake that is full of latakia and virginia but balanced with orientals and a bit of perique. As such it is sweeter and more subtle than Lancer's slices but maintains a decent complexity to hold one's attention. I always try to keep a tin or two on hand and have found it to be consistently of high quality and in my opinion the best of John Aylesbury offerings. This is a solid three stars from me because I do have other tobaccos I smoke more often but for quality it is certainly;deserving of four stars.

John Aylesbury - Own Mixture (English Classic).

Another from my friend Gentleman Zombie, many thanks pal!

Quite a well rubbed flake, there's lots of medium size ribbons. I'm not sure about the moisture as even though Franck sent me some John Aylesbury blends in zip-lock bags, this one's still a bit too moist; that leads me to believe a sealed tin must be saturated as it's been out of it for a while! It's still a very good smoke, though.

The smoke has quite a high proportion of Perique and Oriental's. There's a subdued smokiness from the Latakia, with lot's of dark fruit and sweet-and-sour; it tastes a lot more up-beat than I'd expected. The Virginia gives more sweetness than just grass/hay. The only problem I get is tongue bite; it needs sipping to be kept in order!

The nicotine's medium, and the room-note's pleasant.

A great smoke, highly recommended:

Four stars.

The Lat and Orientals lead with nearly equal influence. They provide smoky, woody, sour and buttery notes that are very pleasing. The Virginias and Perique also have near equal influence providing sweet, spicy, fruity notes that form a very firm backdrop. The two "blocks" of flavor work harmoniously together to create a very nice English that I could almost call a Balkan instead. It's a wonderful smoke.

Medium in body. Medium to full in taste. No added flavorings. Burns very well.

Excellent smoke right out of the tin. Cool burning and very tasty. My wife commented that the room smelled great. I couldn't smell anything but I'm nose blind. I would highly recommend this tobacco if you enjoy English blends.

Appearance: a 50 gram tin was released in Q1 2022. The tobacco is an almost mono-colour blend of well-chopped broken flake having the color of tightly brewed black tea. Distinguishing the individual tobacco varieties is nearly impossible. On top of that, the manufacturer did not skimp on glycerin - the tobacco, while not overly moist, has a slightly sticky consistency and practically does not dry out in the open air at room temperature.

Flavor: medium bodied, very balanced and complex. The flake has been pressed very well - the individual notes flow one into the other, making almost a unified bouquet. Even when the tobacco is exposed to the open air for long periods of time, the tobacco flavor hardly diminishes. Moderate amount of latakia and rather bright orientals play almost equally, forming the basis of this bouquet - soft tones of smoked meat and dressed leather almost without a touch of peat, notes of paprika and coriander. Subdued woody tones of Virginia are kept in the background, with a slight support of boiled fruit, barely noticeable sourness in the aroma and almost imperceptible prune flavor.

Taste: Dense but moderately bright. Light smokiness and well-defined woody tones prevail, supported by spicy picking. The perique is well felt on the retrohale, giving off a fair amount of spice. The bouquet has just a very light sweetness and the same light acidity as from a dry white wine. The creamy tones of the latakia are also lost against the tandem of oriental and perique. The blend initially tastes a bit harsh, although there are no sharp notes in it. Towards the middle of the pipe the tobacco becomes more mild, but it is far from the mildness of Dunhill or Pease. The blend smokes extremely slowly and coolly, tolerates overheating, burns out into gray loose ash, leaving some moisture in the bowl. The strength of tobacco is medium, in very large pipes nicotine hit is probable. The aftertaste is woody and some bitter, slightly astringent, quite persistent.

The smoke has a rather persistent woody odor with a slight peat tinge.

What's the bottom line? A good but some rough English blend. Gregory Pease made my favorite Chelsea Morning with a similar mix of tobaccos, and it is considerably milder. In addition to the somewhat harsh taste, I can complain about the excessive moisture, but a fan of dense English blends may well be interested in this tobacco.

Smell: Latakia! you smell a lot of Latakia. Really inviting. Rich, leathery and smoky as it should be.

Taste: Rich, tasty, spicy, leathery, smoky. A remarkable English mixture. In my opinion it has nothing to envy of more well-known English blends.

Ratio Smell/Taste: The taste resembles the smell, but I would have expected the Latakia to be more dominant. It is the leading note indeed, but not exactly to the extent I would have expected by putting my nose in the tin. This is not a minus though. Overall a nice bouquet of smells and flavors.

Moisture: The tobacco is really moist, almost wet. It need time to dry and even when it seems ready to be smoked it brings out a lot of moisture. 3 stars instead of 4 because of this.

Filter: Without.

Ghosting: Mild.
