Holger Dankse - Original Tobacco Taste.

Although this hasn't any added flavourings I notice a very slight marzipan-esc type of sweetness coming from the ribbons. Whilst I'm on the subject of the unlit blend I would like to state how perfect the moisture is, absolutely brilliant: not damp, not dry, just the required amount to begin immediately. The included tobaccos are at a good balance to one and other, a really impartial split.

To get this burning all that's needed is quite a short touch with the flame, then it delivers a steady/constant burn, giving off a medium temperature delicious smoke. The flavour of the smoke, I find to be very "no-nonsense": I get quite a straight forward Virginia with a subtle sweetness in the background, almost as if that's what the marzipan-esc sweetness transpired to be. Mrs N is quite mild with this one, notable but mild. The room-note is, again, no-nonsense. It's a very simple sweet Virginia one, albeit the note is not too heavy thus not too offensive. Due to the lack of any ostentatious character in this after a short while it does tend to become a little laborious, but I think that this would be a really fulfilling "quick smoke break" blend due to its no-nonsense character!

Original tobacco taste. OK, that's what I want, and my thanks to Planta for making the attempt with this blend. Opening the pouch, I find a sweet and slightly hay-ish mixture cut, with bright yellows and generous amounts of black: lots of BC in here. For this kind of blend, that is a good thing.

Stuffing and lighting are easy; I notice there may be just a touch of KY in there, too. Not enough to make it spicy, but certainly making this blend more interesting, as well as helping with the smoking behaviour. The smoke, for me, is somewhat disappointing. All the right starting points are there: it burns well, it has a good VA taste, good sweetness, bread and airiness from the BC. But there is very little depth.

This is a very light blend for my tastes. I am not condemning it for that. But with the name of the blend, IMHO, comes an implicit responsibility. When you market something specifically as being pure 'baccy, I expect you to celebrate the 'baccy. And this, unfortunately, does not happen here. What we have in the pouch is pretty much the average Holger Danske blend, minus the sauce.

That does not make it bad 'baccy. But it seems Planta have forgotten why they put their various sauces on most of their pipe blends: their base tobaccos do not seem to have much flavour on their own.

All that said, I would recommend a pouch of this blend to the beginner, to get used to natural blends. It does burn well, does not get too hot in my experience, is pretty uncomplicated, and it does keep the promise: this is the taste of the tobacco, and nothing else. Good sweetness, but nothing to bowl me over.

This is a surprisingly nice tobacco. Usually the Holger Danske line is heavily cased, but this is very natural. There is a Virginia sweetness and a haylike taste, but all in all, the flavors are very subtle. It is very easy on the tongue for a Virginia, but a few bowls are needed to explore the flavors, as the first few puffs could be bland, but it develops. Given the low price, it is a perfect Allday smoke and will be in my rotation.

A pleasant journey to the roots of pipe tobacco.

The pouch smell is that of pure tobacco leaf directly after the drying. It's not too subtle a scent even though there is no artificial taste added but it's also sweeter smelling than shag for cigarettes.

The fermented Black Cavendish is dark brown and makes up almost half the pouches tasty innards. Mostly bright colored you can still almost recognize the leaves. No nasty stems - just tasty tobacco.

In the smoke there's no noticable aroma added and if you're intrigued by the idea you won't be disappointed. Nuances of sweetness and cream vary just enough to stay interesting and make you keep chasing the next sip. Don't expect too much sweetness, though, it's very balanced out. Pure tobacco taste and a satisfying smoke, really.

I can't recommend this with four stars. But just because it won't rock your world or get you into pipe smoking. It's there to do it's job and you can't blame it for being too much or too little of something. It's positively just quality tobacco. I personally want to keep it around.

If you don't have the time to grow your own - this is your blend!

I still look for inexpensive but tasty tobacco for everyday smoking like Schippers Tabak but with another taste. Holger Danske Original Tobacco definitely does not belong to this category. By the way, pipe tobacco is not so popular in Belgium and there are mostly Mac Baren varieties from inexpensive blends. By buying Holger Danske Original Tobacco you will get a pouch of hay. Tobacco itself smells sour and I cannot tell what it's like. The smoke tastes slightly and smells strongly like burning hay. If you do not have a lot of money to buy something good and need to choose what to put in your pipe - this or hay, put hay, because hay will not bite your tongue. Like all Mac Baren blends, it bites a lot, so I would not recommend it for beginners or those who cannot tolerate Virginia and Cavendish. I think this blend was the last I have ever tried from Mac Baren.

UPDATE: I tried to smoke it using a charcoal filter but it still bit and the taste turned to sour like candies that explode in the mouse with an acidity bursting.

Another decent, yet decidedly unmemorable, tobacco from Holger-Danske.

There's nothing wrong with the vaguely fruity aroma issuing from the (rather mean, yet popular sized) pouch of 40g. But when you are paying less than 6 euros on the continent there's not a lot to grumble about.

Very little flavour to be had here and It's a very average blend that you'd expect from a cheap blend, but there are worse and almost certainly better than this one.

With blends like this it is best to smoke all in one go. Returning to a cold pipe and relighting will show up the cheapness of this blend and bite, hard.

That said, if I had access to this blend and at the price I have specified, I'd probably buy this as a staple, rather than comparable blends.

One of the best drug store non aromatic blends available today. Cool, dry smoke, no tongue bite. Natural sweetness of Virginia noticeable till end of the ball. Perfect balance between the price and quality.

I bought a 50g pouch of this, because I needed to add 5€ to my shopping card for getting free shipping. So I crawled through countless cheap OTC's that Dan Pipe offers, 99% of them being full-grown aromatics, which I don't prefer so much and have enough of jarred at home for the few occasions I smoke them.

Then I stumbled upoon Holger Danske's "Original Tobacco Taste". Holger Danske usually is known for it's heavy aromatic OTC blends. This blend is the only flavoring-free mixture of Holger Danske's range. As stated above Ms. Dr. Stiller (the head of the company) admitted there's a very mild casing added, to enhance the natural tobacco qualities (maybe sth. like sugar-water or honey I'd guess?).

Original Tobacco Taste comes in a inviting brown pouch, with a wiking-ship in the center. "Superior Quality" it says above. Neat design, that makes a traditional and no-nonsense impression to me. As I opene the pouch I got greeted by a "dark" toned, very tobacco-y and spicy aroma. A mild honey-ish sweetness is underlying, but really barely detectable. The ribbon cut leafs are in balanced proportions, a lot of bright-brown leaf, some yellow-ish speckles and a bit of black ribbons.

Sadly they don't name the "condimental tobaccos", but I'd guess its something like Java leaf or alike. It smells pretty similar to "Hansa Krüll" by Pöschl, which is also Java-forward.

I packed a clay-pipe full of it (which was a breeze due to the ribbon-cut) and set it on fire. To my surprise the aroma while smoking is much less spicy than the pouch-aroma! While the pouch aroma is almost obtrusively spicy, the aroma when smoked it very mellow, palatable and unobtrusive!

7 different Virginia leafs are in it, at make their presence known through a nice diversity of flavors! I get bready notes, minor grass and a bit of hay. Very gentle honey-ish sweetness, which may also be contributed by the black Cavendish is flattening the edges in the back. The "condimental-tobaccos" are easily noticeable, yet more in the back to give this blend body and spice. They offer very "dark" toned spiciness, but not in a overpowering way.

I'm really impressed by the diversity and depth of this blend! It offers a lot of aromas to explore, and a few bowls are needed to detect them all. Compared to "Hansa Krüll" (which is of the same style) this is a much more sophisticated blend. The spiciness is always present, but not as strong/intense as in Hansa Krüll.

Originial Tobacco Taste is definetly an All-Day-Smoke, due to it's mellow, yet full-bodied and spicy, very tobacco-y aroma. All in all the smoke makes a most natural impression to me.

This will appeal to any smoker who likes a pure tobacco aroma, with depth and refinement to it.

The pouch note is that of dried hay, promising a cool, light smoke, and delivering on that promise too. Virginias are the main players here, so much so that the cavendish only adds a bit of sweetness to the mixture while the burley and perique are pretty much unnoticeable. Semi-coarse cut lights and burns well, while tongue-bite is totally nonexistent, even if puffed hard.

Overall a very light, easy, uncomplicated smoke with a bit of sweetness in it; would recommend to beginners.

Not a favourite but would buy again if in the mood for lighter fare, and good enough to make me want to try out the other Holger Danskes too.

This tobacco is good though it lacks of something, I do not no what because i compare it with the pride of Sweden, Hamilton and even Mac Baren mixture. I like those very much. This is mild, good, but not exiting enough to me. But for the price good.
