The Virginia is grassy, citrusy sweet, but almost a minor player. The Oriental/Turkish is dry, smoky, woody and slightly spicy with a few sour notes. The Cyprian latakia is smoky and woody, but it lacks the much of the usual Cyprian sweetness one expects from it. Won't bite or get harsh. A fairly dry smoke that burns at a reasonable pace, needs a few relights, and leaves just a tad bit of moisture. Has a consistent flavor. It's a decent blend with a little nic-hit, but doesn't distinguish itself in any real way.

I smoked the entire lineup of Castello blends years ago when they started coming out. I'm told that Castello wanted a range of tobaccos that would appeal to smokers of all types of tobaccos. I don't recall who the original blender was but Old Antiquari was a new one released a few years ago by C&D. Latakia forward with Virginia coming through. The Oriental component was really light and played peek a boo with my palate. A decent smoke for lighter English lovers and certainly a bargain price.

I love Castello pipes and C&D has so many good tobaccos that this one seemed like a no-brainer; it said virginia, latakia, oriental, a good combo IMHO. But seriously, what's the deal here? Did they forget the latakia in my tin? I'm getting nothing. Just a bland, flavorless tobacco. Not bad tasting, but certainly not what I would call an "English mixture delivering a creamy finish to the discerning palate." Unfortunately, this one misses the mark big time. I'll leave it to marinate for a while and come back to it.

I put "somewhat recommended" in the hope that it will eventually taste like something I want to smoke.

Try this one at your own risk. (Side note, Sea Rock is a decent aromatic, so they're not all bad)

I'm pretty much in agreement with Pipestud on this blend. My tin is 4 1/2 years old at the time of opening. The latakia is the first thing noticed and persists consistently throughout the smoke. The orientals tickle the tongue in a non-aggressive way. the Virginia tags along and provides a smooth underbody. The tin info says "Medium-bodied" and I have to go along with this as well. Certainly no bite. Could be an all day smoke if one were so inclined.

Do you like the idea of smoking pencil shavings? Load up some of this and you'll be close. Very woody with a bare hint of smoke and sweetness. That's about it. The Orientals dominate with very little input from the Lat and Virginias. I need more from an "English".

Mild in body. Mild to medium in taste. No added flavoring. Burns very well.
