Hearth & Home Mazatec

It's earthy, slightly sweet and a bit smoky, in fact, the general character of the tobacco has been described as "mushroomy" This slightly aromatic Latakia blend is complex, rich and satisfying. Try something different!

This is an absolutely beautiful blend! The smoke started with the sweetness of the cavendish and smoky/spice of the latakia forward in equal proportion, creating a cool and creamy smoke. As I worked through the bowl a wonderful "damp woods in the morning" taste begin to emerge and the smoke became even cooler, enhancing the experience even further. Pipesandcigars describes this a "mushroomy", which is about spot on. The deep, earthy flavor works on the taste buds while a slight marshmallow aroma fills the room. It is as pleasant in taste as it is evocative of your best days in the woods (or at least it was for me).
The coarse cut of the blend lights well and stays lit easily. I experienced no tongue bite throughout the blend. Given how cool this smokes I would suggest using a wider bowl.
This one REALLY worked for me - definitely in my top 5. I smoked this in a 9mm filter pipe and still experienced outstanding flavor. I'll give in another review in an unfiltered pipe at some point.

This aromatic English has a decent amount of smoky, woody sweet Cyprian latakia. The Virginias are grassy citrus sweet in a supporting role. The creamy smooth black cavendish is very vanilla-like, and plays well with the latakia, almost as equal partners. There's a touch of spice, too. Not sure about the "mushrooms", but there is a sweet topping. Burns cool at a moderate pace with a consistent flavor that never weakens or gets harsh. Has a mild to medium nic-hit. No bite or and leaves little moisture in the bowl. It's fairly sweet with a nice richness, and has a pleasant after taste.

The name derives from a Mexican Mesoamerican people who use psychoactive mushrooms as part of ceremonies. What is the connection with pipes? An influx of new pipers that use pipes as part of their costumes for Lord of the Rings cosplay. Another company targets them with LOTR referenced blends, one of the most popular blends refers to mushrooms, from an obscure script line. Now we have another "mushroom" blend.
It's dark with black cavendish and a tad of Cyprian latakia. Some light Virginia adds some contrast. It is sticky like any self-respecting aromatic and based on its easy ignition, not due to water. Sounding familiar yet? One more hint: vanilla.
I don't taste mushrooms, mushrooms don't taste like marshmallows. I get Captain Black with latakia. It's actually not that bad until the last third of the bowl when the glycol coats your tongue and you have to scoop out the dottle before it soaks in.
If you like aromatic latakia, try Nordings Hunter's Blend Fox Hound or Frog Morton Cellar. If you like Captain Black with a twist, try this. If you smoke a pipe as part of cosplay, get the original for the LOTR name.
Not for me. Not up to H&H standards, in my opinion.

Although I cannot identify the little something extra that blender Russ O. put in this one, it was very subdued but lent a sweetness to this Virginia/Latakia combination that I found to be very attractive. If you have smoked Iwan Ries Gourmet English, then you have an idea of what Mazatec is like. Not a strong or smoky Engish/Aromatic, but one that beguiles the palate with flavor galore. I really like this tobacco in the afternoons when I'm working in my shop and want a heavenly smell wafting around my head as I work. Good stuff!
