Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Black Bogie Aromatic

(3.00)
Manufactured by spinning tobacco dark fired leaves into a rope. Black Bogie, cooked longer than Brown Bogie which makes it milder with a smoky aroma, is a true old fashioned stout smoke, perfect, with a good strength more suited for the experienced pipe smoker. Aromatic scented version.

I smoked this one years ago when the G&H tobacco had to be sent to the USA by fellow tobacco friends in England because there was no formal importing. :Tough to describe" was the way I began my notes. Strong and oily with something more than an all tobacco taste. Of major concern (well, for me anyway,) was what to do with the rest of the tobacco? I finally decided to bury it in my neighbor's back yard. Please don't tell.

I bought this as part of a job lot when I was taken with the desire to venture back into Aromatics. Having been educated previously into the ways of ropes & twists, I felt able to take on what is undoubtedly the 'rough end of the trench' in terms of aromatic tobaccos. The tobacco itself is the typical rope tobacco, a thick braid of dark brown/black rope, with an over whelming scent of musty essence of geraniums and carnations. Not really unpleasant, but not something I would traditionally associate with the term 'Aromatic'. The strength of the tobacco also pokes through, making the whole experience of sniffing this thick oily length in front of me a genuinely exiting - and slightly intoxicating - experience. I am eager to get this lit. Sliced into thin disks, loaded atop one another the result is - - - utter disappointment. The tobacco just won't stay lit! Drawing upon my experiences before with these types of tobacco (I had obviously forgotten more than I knew), for my next pipe, I sliced & unraveled (or roughly chopped up) the tobacco, and left just a few whole or halved disks in the bowl. When this was done (assisted by a little drying time), the tobacco burned well down to the bottom. The taste is pleasant to me, it is - of course - very robust, but not in any way a chore. I gave up trying to discern flavours from it, they have a slight floral note, but the tobacco is clearly the main player. This is really how I like my tobacco, dark, rich & satisfying, both in flavour & nicotine. It is like playing rugby on a rainy cold day, rolling around in the mud & getting flung about. Sparking up this beauty is the final whistle (after a win), immensely satisfying from the first puff, the mid bowl is like the showering & recovery period directly after, when the elation begins to set in, and the end bowl is the start of the drinking session in pub after. All in all, a lovely tobacco. This tobacco for me has only 2 drawbacks, which, unfortunately are quite substantial. It is described (misleadingly, in my opinion) as an aromatic. I don't think that this comes across particularly in either the taste or room note. The taste is (as stated above) mainly just the powerful tobacco, with other flavours being consumed by it to a large extent, and the room note is just - a rope room note, we all know what that is like for those who don't smoke ropes. The second being that, like all ropes, it requires somewhat substantial prep work, meaning it's no good for a quick pick-me-up smoke in the afternoon, and one must know that one wishes to smoke it in the evening & prepare for it a good hour or two ahead of time. Despite those drawbacks, knowing now how it is, I will probably buy it again at some point in the future. Repeated use can, however, be somewhat rough on the throat, and - for pity's sake - please don't inhale it.

What can I say? A very nice variation on the black bogie/twist theme. I am guessing that this is the unsliced version of the sliced black aromatic reviewed further down the page.

Possibly because it is unsliced, this one seems to retain its added flavour very well. Often with cased blends the flavours seem to burn off pretty early on, but with this one they can still be detected two thirds of the way down the bowl, adding sweetness and rounding out the flavour. I guess this applied essence is similar to that used on Kendal Flake. It obviously has a fair way to go in order to compete with the powerful tobacco flavours, but it seems to manage. All in all, it's very excellent.

The usual warnings about nicotine strength apply, but if you like black twists and lakeland flavours then get thyself to thy local tobacco emporium and insist that they acquire for you a length of black bogie aromatic - you'll enjoy it!

An easy four stars from me.

Gawith Hoggarth - Black Bogie Aromatic.

Another re-write of an early review.

Strong! I'll write more, even though that would do!

The bogie itself is fairly thin and black. It's just the right build to be sliced into coins and then smoked as is, without the need for further crumbling. If it's not crumbled after slicing it can take a few re-lights to get a good burn going, but nothing too drastic. Once lit the burn from B.B.A is a fairly cool one, leaving a pure white ash. I get no tongue bite and the smoke is quite palpable in build. The flavour? It takes a little time to develop: at first the Virginia seems the strongest addition, but after a quarter of a bowl a floral note creeps in, beginning as mild and climbing to just above medium.

The nicotine's very strong, and the room-note's quite heavy.

I quite like this, not enough for full marks, but nevertheless, it's worth three stars:

Recommended.
