Peterson Holiday Season 2012

I am rating this tobacco for what it is: an innovative aromatic for the holidays, as opposed to a tobacco meant for everyday smoking. And innovative it is! I get apple and a lot of honeydew (green melon) wrapped in cotton candy. And, surprisingly, some Wild Mint leaves. This is a playful tobacco. The smoke is mild and surprisingly dry. No tongue bite. The room note is enticing: sweet and candy-like. Expect very favourable comments from non-smokers! For me, this is a treat, but I'll tire of it quickly when smoked on a regular basis.

I picked a tin of this up along with the 2013 blend and unlike the newer blend I am enjoying this a lot more.

The smell on opening the tin is to me a very heavy citrus note with lots of lemon and orange and the smoke reflects this well delivering a sharp kick of citrus along with some floral notes and sour apple hard sweets.

One word of warning though, if smoked too quickly it will bite something chronic so slow smoking is the only option in my opinion which is a shame as I always end up wanting more of that sour apple flavour.

A very nice offering from Peterson for Christmas. Beautiful presentation of golds and blacks. Ready for packing and smoking right out of the tin. Sucking on the stem pre-lite tastes of evergreen/spiced apple. Once lit, a beautiful melange of flavors and a smooth, dry, cool, and bite-free smoke. As aromatic as this one is, with the aroma of baked apples out in front, there is sufficient tobacco flavor to satisfy. A cozy feeling of Christmas past can be effortlessly conjured up while blissfully puffing away on Holiday Season 2012. I just ordered 3 more tins. Enjoy!

UPDATE 12-15-12: What's truly fantastic about this blend is that you can smell what others smell while you are smoking it. I never experienced this with any other aromatic before. It smells like apple pie baking in the oven with a very sugary crust. The tin note is really good but the smell while smoking is even better. Simply outstanding.

Tasting an Xmas blend of 2012 in 2014... One thing I have to say, it is lovely, and all around me loved its smell. It's a very mild and highly aromtaic mixture. A 3* star, when you just feel like not really smoking... just having candy in your mouth.

I bought the tin in March at one of the good tobacconists in Brussels. They told me that one of their customer had bought 8 or 9 tins of the blend so that led me to buy the last one in the shop!

No regret about that! If I fail to identify the aroma as baked apples: in the tin that more smells as baked bananas. Whatever the strange aroma that is a very nice aromatic whose taste lasts fully when slowly burning in the bowl. Highly recommended if you find one!

If you are lucky enough to have a tin, I do, tee,hee hee,,it's Christmas in a tin, room note lovely, the Missis, smokes a little fast, may be me , can't stop puffing it. General Writing Smoked

Personal opinion

I always said that Peterson can do large pipes and tobaccos mediocre. Not because they use raw materials of the highest quality, but because they do not get their mixers combine good flavors and I always end up looking like cigars over North European than American or English.

Last Saturday my friend Alex opened a can and smell both their expressions and comments put to Holiday Season 2012 against me. He had bought two cans and returned one. If you're looking for a holiday blend that inspires the season with its flavor and aroma this is definitely it.

This year's blend is a nice combination of different Virginias and Black Cavendish leaves that is married superbly to a top dressing of hazelnut, caramel, and baked apples.

Upon opening the tin one is greeted with a wonderful sweet apple cider aroma with a hint of caramel and hazelnut. Opening the tin alone brings to mind all of the wonderful late nights infront of the fire place sipping on some warm apple cider.

Now for the smoke, the moisture level is almost perfect right out of the tin for a smoke. It packs wonderfully and takes a charring light and true light just as well. It burns nice and evenly to a beautifully white ash. The flavor transfers over nicely into the smoke like all the other limited edition offerings from Peterson. It burns pretty cool for an aromatic and doesn't leave a wet goopy mess at the bottom of the bowl afterwards.

Overall this is a premo aromatic blend and one that I'm sure will sell out quickly due to the fact that it's a limited edition blend. Hopefully the folks at Peterson will make this a regular to their line up of blends.

Box, as always – beautiful and fitting the season. Moisture content – all fine, packs well, smokes great; no gurgling, no bite, all great.

Now the taste – O-M-G, this is just horrible! I'm a huge fan of aromatics, but this one is just bleah! Overwhelming green apples – this-is-all. Rather cool and refreshing taste, exactly what I do not want from my pipe. Personally I love the sweet and warm notes (vanilla, honey, a lingering note of toffee and cinnamon). If this tobacco was a drink it would have been a mohito (which I enjoy, but not in a pipe).

So for this blend, it's a no-no from me (unfortunately).
