HU Tobacco Masai
(3.67)
The Masai – a pleasantly sweet, medium strong blend. A basis of Honeydew Virginia ready rubbed is blended with strong Malawi burley, dark fired Kentucky and some Cypriot latakia. The result is a medium-strong mixture with the balanced sweetness of slightly smoky and chocolaty tones. The Masai – an interesting and perfectly balanced blend of spice and sweetness.
Notes: Contains 17% Cyprian latakia. Syrian was originally used until the stock ran out. According to Hans Wiedemann this blend was discontinued. (They changed the name of the series from "Foundation by Musicó" to "African Line")

The low key honeydew Virginia is mild, subtly sweet with a touch of citrus, and a little grassy as it forms the base for the other tobaccos. The Malawi burley is nutty, earthy, and very chocolatey in a support role, though at times it will take a more primary position due to its natural strength, which is deeper than that of the honeydew Virginia. Also playing back up is the lightly spicy, woody sweet dark fired Kentucky, which is mostly a condimental addition. The Syrian latakia is smoky and woody, and though it is eighteen percent of the blend, it mostly serves to add its intrinsic qualities as a flavor push in a subordinate role. A cool and smooth easy burning ready rubbed mixture that has some well balanced complexity, no harsh or dull moments, and will burn to an ashy finish with very little moisture in the bowl. No bite, which seems to be a hallmark of HU products. The strength is just a shade past being mild while the taste is right in-between mild and medium. The nic-hit is mild. The after taste is as pleasant as the room note, the latter being fairly mild. Three and a half stars.

The proprietor of HU-Tobacco, Hans Wiedemann, has recently introduced a new line of tobacco's blended in co-operation with the Italian pipe maker Foundation by Musico. Being the big fan I am of his blends, I ordered them all and this is my review of "the Masai". This one contains 18% Latakia that spices up the rest of its constituent parts: a sweet honeydew Virginia, Burley and Kentucky. To me, there is something Mac Barenish about this blend and it reminds me of HH Highland Blend, only without the Glenfarclas used in that one. Still a very tasty, slow-burning and sweetish (but definately not an aromatic) blend that is light on the palate.

Based on hazy memories of a couple bowls worth sample: Too bad this is out of production... very refined and quite unique tasting!
Hans Wiedemann knows how to make some good ol' English I'd spout! And so he did with Masai.. but.. there's a twist! A small-ish amount of Burley is added, which not only adds a wonderful "thickness" or body to the smoke, but also some delicate(ly) nutty and chocolaty notes that pop out every now and then.
Don't be fooled though, this isn't overly musty, spicy or strong! Medium-strength and with the perfect amount of sweetness to bring balance to the force, letting all the components really shine!
Very well done, I'd love to smoke this again - especially in the winter times! Thanks for the sample Hans, maybe you'll bring this one back one day?! 😉
