Edward's Woodsman

(2.50)
A very special mixture of the world's finest tobaccos carefully blended to achieve an English richness. It has just enough Latakia and Perique to satisfy the palate, and yet maintain a pleasing aroma in mixed company.

I tried Woodsman as I was first getting into English blends.

The bag aroma said Latakia, and I also detected the Perique.

It packed well, and lit easily. The burn was quite smooth. The Latakia was most noticeable, and I could tell that there was Perique present, but not overpowering.

The first couple of bowls were pleasant. But as I smoked more Woodsman in the same pipe, I found that the topping started to build up in the pipe and became more assertive. It began to taste like Dolphin with Latakia and Perique! YUCK! I tried another pipe. Same thing. A few good bowls, then along comes Flipper!

Woodsman showed promise, and had I not smoked it in the same pipe every time, I may have never noticed the vile flavoring added.

Dolphins don't belong in the woods.

This is an Edwards English style blend, but it does have some burley in it, as well as virginia, latakia, and a bit of perique. It is round and natural smoking, with enough of a dark accent from the black tobaccos mentioned to call it a fine, but not heavy English blend. I couldn't call my medium packs (7 oz.) wet at all, as all Edwards blends are a bit on the dry side (like C&D), but I haven't smoked this one in years. I remember it fondly as being cool, dry, steady, smooth, with virtually no bite. I was told it had a strange or odd aroma. All in all, a good introduction to or an all day English.

It is a somewhat a newer Edwards natural blend (maybe over a decade old from a private recipe, but not marketed back in the 60's-80's as far as I know). I doubt it has any casing, as all but their newest aromatics are either natural or have a slow essence technique married in (not spray or preservatives). That's the Edwards showcase. I didn't detect any very sweet taste here, but some of the burley could have a small amount of essence tobacco to round out the blend.

Recommended as a new or change of pace English.

This is primarily a Burley-English blend. I've found huge chunks of cube cut and it also appears to have small pieces of Virginia bright along with the Latakia. Description said Perique also, but it must be a very small amount because I couldn't notice it. Like the above reviewer noted, it does have that typical Edwards type of topping to make it much sweeter than it should be. A higher class HGL is a perfect example. It burns well and dries out nicely and probably would have been a very full and non-sweet English (like I like) had it not been for the casing. I did get some tongue bite from this because of the casing. I have a 2oz sample and that will last me awhile. I doubt I'll buy it again.

UPDATE: It's amazing what some age and drying time does to this blend. It's much much better now and the topping has pretty much disappeared, making this more of a traditional English blend. The perique has also come out more since the topping is gone. I actually like it now and wouldn't hesitate to buy more to age.

This reminds me a bit of a Lane blend (HGL), but I feel this is a more refined blend w/more body and less sharpness. The aroma in the pouch is subdued, but it still smells like a nice woodsey English. The moisture is a little high but some air time is all that's required. Colors run the gamut from deep to light browns w/smidgeons of blond here and there. Packs easy enough due to the mixed cut and lights well. Upon lighting, there is mostly a smooth, slightly tart, nice VA flavor w/Latakia providing some smokiness to the also present but light and mild sweetness. I'm erring on the side of caution w/the flavoring rating. I feel there may be something there, but if it is it's nearly non-existant and I'm not sure what it may be. Typical VA tang is present, but not in a bitey way. The Perique is there to add some spice but it isn't overly pronounced; actually I find it quite light. That's a good thing if you don't fancy Perique in a big way. Everything seems to work well together, but the VA is the dominant flavor. This is not a very heavy blend, more mid-range notes than bottom notes, yet it dips into the lower ranges here and there to add some "Oomph" to it. Burns well, not much problem w/gurgle; I used 1 cleaner @ about the 1/3 mark and 1 @ about the 2/3 mark. Virtually no bite and burns to a mottled gray ash. Does get a tad bitter at bowls end, but in no way ruins the experience. This is a good blend for those who want some mild Latakia flavor and a touch of Perique, IMHO a good introduction to English blends for newbies or a milder, perhaps all-day, smoke for seasoned vets wanting a little less punch in their pipe now and then. Pretty good stuff from Edwards; you can pick some up from the folks @ McCranies. Works for me.
