Old Fredder’s Broken Flake. Fred, affectionately called “Old Fredder“ by his friends, counts Virginia/Perique flakes among his greatest passions. Obviously, Old Fredder‘s Broken Flake is tailor made for him. A natural, wonderfully balanced Virginia/Perique broken flake that packs a punch, too. The rather tart red Virginia grades harmonize beautifully with the Louisiana perique I chose for this blend. The result is an unusually strong-flavored tobacco, complex in taste and off the mainstream. A blend that leaves no room for boredom. Just the right thing for Old Fredder, and for all smokers who like it strong-flavored and natural.

A medium bodied VaPer with light, stoved and red Virginias that offers entrancingly inherent tart and tangy citrus, grass with a hint of straw, some ripe, tart dark fruit, light stewed fruit, wood, bread, light sugar, earth and a little floralness. They are the lead components. The earthy perique is mildly spicy with a savory dried fruitiness (raisins and plum) as a supporting player. There'll be a few instances where the perique steps up here and there with the spice, but basically, this product is consistent in flavor from first puff to last. The strength is medium, and the taste just crosses that border. The nic-hit is a couple of steps past the center of mild to medium. Won’t bite, and has no harshness or weak moments. It does have a few small rough notes. Burns cool and clean at a slightly slow pace, and sports a pleasantly lingering spicy sweet and floral after taste and room note. Hardly leaves any moisture in the bowl, and requires a couple more than an average number of relights. It can almost be an all day smoke, and is repeatable in any case.

I have smoked several bowls of this blend, but on the first bowl,, upon lighting up I thought I was in for a ho hum VaPer that was not a standout. But then, when I hit the halfway mark of my bowl of it, wham! A huge flavor burst that was terrific in flavor and smelled wonderful to me. This one builds in strength all the way down and just is delicious to smoke. One of the best VaPers I have ever smoked! But it's not like any Vaper I have ever smoked either. It stands on it's own.

It is a broken flake of Virginia and perique, smelling hay like with a zing in the bag, came at just the right moisture level, and packed very easy in the bowl. It is mostly light khaki to light brown in color and really does not have the dark browns of most VaPer blends. Upon lighting, it is very mild and one just tastes the Va notes in it. But when it strengthens, the perique comes out in force but no overwelming, and it smokes at just the right mix of Va and Perique. It works, one does not dominate the other but work in unison to provide a rich creamy smoke that leaves you wanting to refill and smoke it again. Has a medium level of nicotine, won't make you head spin but it satisfies. It burns very evenly down the boel, stays lit, and leaves a light gray ash in the bottom with little dottle. I really am impressed with the quality of this tobacco and I will order several punds of it for my cellar. It is for sure highly recommended for all VaPer lovers!

One of the best Va/Pers I had so far! I got ahold of some 25g from 2011 of this and wowaweewah! This is some decent Va/Per blend!!

Aroma from the tin is fruity, spicy and grassy. As my tin is a bit older it's quite dry, so I can't comment on fresh moisture level. Once in the pipe you're in Va/Per heaven! Your nostrils instantly get tickled (but not singed!) by a lot of sharp pepperiness. Bold flavours to me, of earthiness, grass, dark stoved fruits and some underlying sweetness and moments of hay-aroma. Some figs and plums by the Perique, as well as a lot of the typical pepperiness.

Not overly complex, but with some pleasant, intriguing depth to it, this makes for a wonderful, entertaining and delicious smoke. Definetly one of my favorite Va/Pers, already after the first bowl! I like me Va/Pers with some boldness to 'em, and Old Fredder's definetly got it. Don't get me wrong, it's not overly strong in a way, but has intense spice, intense fruity-grassy aroma and rich flavours.

4/4 stars...EASILY!

In my opinion, HU Tobacco is a step above competing manufacturers: all of their blends are premium, high quality products that only the analytical mind and methodical German genius can produce. Hans is basically the modern Wilhelm Richard Wagner of pipe tobacco and his blends are a work of art.

Old Fredder's is the first of 6 different tins I bought from HU Tobacco. A really nice blend, the honey sweetness of the Virginias combines perfectly with the spicy Perique, resulting in a fairly complex and smooth smoking experience.

Act I of Old Fredder’s takes you into the serene world of honey sweetness of the Virginias. Act II awakens the senses and passions with the exceedingly spicy Perique and the final act unites both polarities, in an alchemical synthesis of complete pipe unity, culminating in pipe smoking enlightenment and transcendence. Highly recommended, one of the best VaPers you can get in Europe.

This is a phenomenal VaPer! I've received a bunch of HU samples from a friend in Germany, and needless to say, Hans is quickly becoming one of my favorite blenders. This one steps outside of the traditional hay and bread like VaPer flavor you'll be accustomed to if you like VaPers. The red Virginia adds a zing to it and at least in my opinion, which is almost identical to JimInks, the perique really comes back and forth poking it's flavor in and out and giving it a good strength. This is a 10/10 blend for me. My favorite VaPer tobacco is Orlik Golden Sliced and it's very interesting to contrast how VaPers can taste so drastically different. This broken flake really marries the flavors together.

Pipe Used: various briars

Age When Smoked: Not sure, fairly moist so i'd guess pretty fresh.

Purchased From: gifted sample

Similar Blends: This is pretty unique to me and I would not liken it to any other VaPers..

At Lohmar Pipeshow, the start of HU-Tobacco, I get a few samples from Hans. The first sample I tried was Old Fredder`s Broken Flake. It was really a good decision, so I was able to buy a few tins of this blend. The Old Fredder Broken Flake is an oldfashioned really traditionell blend. Nothing new. Virginia,Perique no difference to a lot of blends of this genre. The big difference to other VA/Perique blends is the detail. Old Fredder is perfect ballanced - a good portion Perique but not to much to overwhelm the sweetness of the Virginia. But much enough to give this blend a phantastic fruity and subtle note. Nothing tastes chemical or unnaturell. The Tobacco burns very well and has enough power for a satisfying smoke. The Old Fredder`s Broken Flake is not made for beginners. I think this blend is made for lovers of the genre and smokers who like different notes of taste and for those who wants a smoke to concentrate for. I´m a little bit shamed, but I must give this HU-Blend 4 stars again - Highly recommend !!

The first ten to twenty puffs are insignificant. That said, brace yourselves for the flavor burst after initial or second or third tamp. Lively and sweet vaper we have here. Not much spice explosions if that's what you're looking for, though you'll occasionally get a whiff of black pepper. Old Fredder's broken is very sweet, a little bit tangy, not too spicy but playful all day offering from HU Tobacco. For this particular blend dedicated to Mr. Wiedemann's friend Fred (aka old Fredder), it made me wonder if he's a whimsical guy with a taste for classics.

Compared to Louisiana Broken (original warehouse series), I'd choose LB over Fredder's every time. No offense, oldie. You're also getting four stars! I highly recommend it.

I brought a can of this tobacco to the 2018 Las Vegas show . Everyone flipped out over it and why not ? A broken flake with a tin note like a fruit cellar . The taste is stewed prunes and raisins all the way . A great job at balancing the Virginias and the perique . On the HU vaper scale I would call this the second in terms of perique content they make , with only director's cut having more .The HU skill is that although the amount of any tobacco might be large , it's never a " hit ". The secret is that the perique is not obvious , it's a blend . In a good blend the smoker need not be focusing on any one tobacco but , rather , on the harmony of the blend and the overall smoking experience . The experience here is a being in a well ferminted fruit cellar . One does not need to say … " Hey , I can taste the perique ….. One might rather say … Hey , I am drinking a fermented plumb and raisin wine . I must say , without doubt , this is the best vaper experience I have had in 55 years of smoking . Strong words , yes but I believe the experienced smoker will agree .

Old Fredder`s Broken Flake is a medium bodied VA/Per ready rubbed flake. The color is between light and dark brown and looks very nice. The tin smell is typical for such a blend. A bit like hay with fruity and peppery notes of the Perique. The tobacco is easily to pack and burns very well. The taste is nicely sweet with light fruity notes of the Perique and spicy undertones. Old Fredder`s is totally uncomplicated to smoke and could be an all day smoke in meaning of the uncomplicated handling. The taste is great, never time boring and allways interesting. Smooth without harshness, no tongue bite A good stuff but unspectulary, my first opinion. But in the meantime I must say it`s one more a master piece of Hans. Now I get nervous if I haven`t a few tins in the cellar. I recommend Old Fredder all those pipesmokers who are looking for a very good and honest VA / Per.

Bag note is sweet Virginia with a slightly tart smell. The broken flake is a nice cut. my bag was a bit on the dry side but smoked perfect. First light the perique is there but balanced with the Virginia. I find this a medium bodied blend defiantly not too strong. if anything I find it on the medium side. Nice medium Vaper at the halfway point the perique moves to front and center, but the Virginia keeps it from being a perique bomb. This without a doubt is a high quality blend has some lite sweetness, lite coco with a bit of citrus. all tobacco no heavy toppings or casings. Highly recommended if you like Vapers.

This is a lighter bodied Va than I typically prefer, but like all HU products, it is a very good one. The Vas have that typical hay like citrus sweetness that you would expect from these lighter vas and the perique is but a whisper IMO.

I recommend trying this as I do any HU tobaccos you can get your hand on, but if you have a choice and prefer a heavier bodied vaper such as I do, grab some Director's choice. Personally, I would be just as happy with some LNF or Old Gowrie to fill this niche for myself, but have friends are absolutely infatuated with this one.

It is in deference to HU and to them as this blend and its ilk are directly in their wheelhouse that I put a third star on my review. I would mark it as a two star to my tastes.

Similar Blends: PS LNF, Old Gowrie.

The Old Fredder's Broken Flake is a golden to medium brown Broken Flake. The smell of fresh Hay with notes of fruity acidity Perique. The Tobacco is easy to smoke. Already after the first few turns it becomes clear that this tobacco is not a lightweight. The taste is subtly sweet with slightly fruity notes of Perique. The flavor profile is very interesting and diverse, so that the Old Fredder is never boring. In the meantime the Old Fredder is one of my favorite tobaccos. Two thumbs up and free ride for HU-Tobacco
