This tobacco really appealed to me when I first tried it, but after a few weeks of giving it a go, it lost all appeal. I have done since tried other rum mixtures, and I think the blend lost steam with me because it was not very complex. It was a bit sweet, mildly aromatic, and pretty much bland. It had great potential, but never seemed to deliver the knockout punch. It would be good for the beginner, but after trying other tobaccos from the same genre, most would probably say, "yeah...tried it, but.........."

The smooth, lightly sugary black cavendish seems to be unsweetened since I detected no vanilla. The Virginia is very mildly grassy sweet, and the burley offers a light essence of toasted nuts and molasses. The rum is decent and a little creamy, though it gets just a little syrupy near the finish. Has little nicotine. Burns fairly smooth at a moderate pace, though it may need some dry time. Leaves a little moisture in the bowl, and needs some relights. It's okay for an all day "go about your business" smoke if you dry it a tad.

A beginners favorite of mine that I still enjoy now that I'm getting back into pipe smoking after a hiatus. This is not an overpowering blend, and the rum flavoring is quite pleasant. Though I wasn't too sure I'd like rum blends at first, I'm now looking forward to trying other rum aromatics after enjoying this one. Recommended, especially for beginners.

Tinder Box Rum Runner; is a Burley, Virginia, with a touch of Black Cavendish blend; topped with Rum. Broken Flake cut, it packs well, lights well, and burns well to the bottom of the bowl. It is a cut above the Drug Store/Supermarket styles of pipe tobacco; but not as "smooth & creamy" as CupOJoes #3 Chuchunaa. The Rum is not overpowering as sniffed in the poly-pouch, nor as it is smoked. A three star blend that can be smoked all day

Well, I must have received the dregs of the jar because my pouch was small crumbled bits, no broken flake. Also must have been rehydrated recently because it was entirely too wet. Once the bother of drying was taken care of I can't say this blend won me over. So many other rum flavored aromatics I like better.
I must also report that in my experience, going back to the early 80s when I bought from my local TB most of my Comoys and Savinellis that are still in service today, and then based on more recent experience at two TBs in Arizona and California, that the orientation is very much pipe-centric, and that I don't recall a single meaningful discussion of tobacco. I mean, I didn't even discover there was such a thing as flake or cube cut tobaccos until I walked into Peretti's shop in Boston in 1997. A real tobacconist, not just a retailer. My experience from the 80s was always "doesn't matter what you put in your pipe as long as you have a good pipe to enjoy it in." And the more recent experience at the California store, where I bought some TB bulk and a couple of tins, was that the manager practically begged me to buy a pipe, and have I seen this new line or that, and while walking out with just baccy urged me to "next time buy a pipe!"
So yeah, in that context, Rum Runner kind of fits a certain profile of pipers who mostly looking to upgrade (or think they are upgrading) from Captain Black and the other Lane products. Just my own personal experience, hopefully others have a different impression.
