Mild, golden Virginias, that possesses a naturally high sweetness, are mixed with a mild black cavendish. A fresh flavor of exotic fruits and a touch of bourbon vanilla is added to make this an extraordinarily mild blend.

Notes: Bourbon Vanilla is a variety of the vanilla plant. There is no bourbon (alcohol) in this blend.

The smell is great when you open the pouch or tin, and the people around you love it when you smoke it. Of course, that's not a reason to buy this, so here's your reason to consider it: it's a strong aromatic with a multiplicity of flavors in it. The grassy, citrus sweet Virginias are of high quality and form the base of the blend. The toppings have a deep fruitiness, and the bourbon vanilla has some depth, though it's mildly applied, and works well with the sugary black cavendish. The coconut topping is mild, but always noticeable. The toppings greatly sublimate the tobaccos, but you will still observe them in the background. The strength is a couple of steps past the center of mild to medium, while the taste is medium. The nic-hit is mild. Won't bite or get harsh. Burns at a moderate pace with a cool, clean, creamy sweet consistent flavor that translates to the pleasantly lingering after taste and room notes. Has no harsh spots or weakening of taste. Leaves a little moisture in the bowl, but no dottle. Requires an average number of relights. Not quite an all day smoke, but one that may bear repeating during the day. A different twist in the aro genre.

Oh my...what an aromatic, and that's aromatic with a capital A. This is the sweetest blend I have ever tried and certainly one of the most unique. It is not goopy or gunky, just plain sweet. I smoked a whole tin in just three days because it was so different.

Having said the above, I will never purchase this blend again. Once was enough. I personally enjoy pipe tobacco that tastes like tobacco. Blue Note is cotton candy disguised as tobacco.

Aromatic fans, listen up. This will be your creme' de la creme'! Don't let Sherlock taste it though, he'd turn over in his grave!

Ya can't go wrong with Dan Tobacco. This isn't just a review of Blue Note but all their blends in general. I am primarily a non aromatic smoker as I love the natural taste of tobacco but every now and then everyone needs a change of pace. This is where Blue Note, Black Velvet and DaVinci come in. They give an excellent flavor where the tin aroma actually translates to taste. So far in my 4 year search Dan produces some of the finest Aromatics(along with Sillem's Back...both German.) they also have some delicious English blends. So if you're an English kinda guy lookin for a good aromatic. Ya can't go wrong with Dan Tonacco. Every blend I've tried thus far is a hands down 4 stars!

I bought a tin of this due to all the favorable reviews. I don't know what other people were smoking, but it couldn't have been this Blue Note.

This tobacco has zero tobacco taste or smell. It burns hot. There is a vague smell and taste of fruity boiled sweets, but otherwise this thing is so mild it's like smoking fresh air with a slight fruity taste.

By all means try this 'tobacco' (I hesitate to call it that because apart from looking at it in the tin, there's no actual smell or taste of tobacco), but why not save some money and just buy a tin of boiled sweets and suck fresh air through your pipe - you'll get the same result and save a lot of money.

Well, I've never considered myself a connoisseur of tobaccos, just a smoker who enjoys rich aromatics. I love Sutliff's Molto Dolce and Lane's Black Raspberry in particular. I'm a solid Cavendish lover with no particular liking for Virginias and a dislike of most burleys--except the ones I grow myself. I bought several tins in a combination "try them" sale and absolutely loved this one. Usually I stay away from anything that indicates it has a citrus content because they always smoke hot for me, but not this one. The taste is enticing and almost as pleasant as the smell, which is divine. I can't really say why I love this blend, just that I do. It's different from all the others and kept drawing me to it until I hit the bottom of the tin. Must have more. It's habit forming in the best way I know. Hot smoking? No, not at all. Burns well and leaves a clean ash with no wetness.

This is it! This is the aromatic you have been looking for! This here tobacco will appeal to the non-aromatic smoker. It's the ONLY aromatic that I've found where the smell actually translates to taste. It's wonderful! I find it to be a great morning smoke, as I reach for it 7 days a week. Of course, it did take some time before I was truly blown away, it kinda creeps up on you and then becomes positively addicting. It's nothing like all the other countless aromatic tobaccos I have tried before, this actually tastes like tobacco. So if you, like me, have been wanting to find a good aromatic to throw into your rotation, than look no further. Essential.

Edit 9-17-16 I bought a pound of this stuff in early 2010 and I'm just now finishing it. I took a couple of years off from smoking Blue Note but now that I've made my rounds and have tried hundreds and hundreds of different blends I have built up an even higher appreciation for it. This stuff is gold! And it ages very well and the top note holds. I can't say enough good things about this blend! It really satisfies my nicotine cravings as well.

ORIGINAL 1/25/2007~ I love this Stuff!!!!!! Blue Note has a distinctive aroma and taste that are hard for me to describe without just saying "FANTASTIC". And I'll use my wife's description for its tin note, "Smells like Fig Newtons." Yeah but it smokes like a dream! Treat it nicely and you'll fall in love with it too!

UPDATE 10/22/2008~I think my pallette has matured, Ino longer find this to be as phenomonal as in the past.I still love the smell and taste, but for some reason the quality between tins is horribly varied, this one bites like a rabid goat. I'm docking it a star. If you only smoke aromatics, still give it a shot.

My favorite aromatic blend. It has a faint but noticeable tobacco flavor instead of the "dry air" most people experience with aromatics. The room note is AMAZING. Vanilla, coconut, custard, bourbon whisky. This is a great aromatic that every pipe smoker should try at least once. A great example of what an aromatic can be.

A very smokable aromatic. For some reason the German/Danish tobacco blenders can make a tobacco that has pleasant aromas and don't taste like sour/bitter Burley like our US blenders. This one tastes and smells like vanilla & coconut with a hint of citrus while still tasting like a quality tobacco. There are some similarities to Petersons Connoisseurs Choice, however, I feel BN is smoother and without any bite. I may not smoke a lot of this tobacco, but I will keep some around for a change of pace.

Well if you were looking for the perfect Aro YOU WILL BE THRILLED!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not a big Aro smoker for different reasons, that being said Blue Note is a fantastic aromatic. The tin aroma is so sweet/alcohol like reminds me of Mogan David wine, The interesting thing is the flavor holds through the entire bowl. It has a good tobacco flavor and sweetness at the bottom of the bowl,It smokes dry for entire bowl but the ash is dark I smoked two bowls in the same pipe (Ascorti 3/4 bent) to see if there is any ghosting going on. Going to fill it with McCLELLAND #5110 Dark English Full and see how it does be back...................shortly!.........Back and //wow except for moisture in the heel (3- bowls in a row gave no time to dry out.... one of the best Aro's I've ever smoked holds it's flavor well and when that diminishes your left with a good tobacco flavor. The moisture content is low and it tasted wonderful. I've smoked a lot of Aro"s in my like and the thing that is amazing VS. American Aro's is how fast they lose there flavor and how wet they get at the bottom. Blue Note leaves a dry heel and a flavor that holds thru 3/4 of the bowl and then the good tobacco flavor comes through. An amazing trip, I've been let down by the American style that so I was nervous to try this . So I waited 6 yrs to pop the top, I wish I had done it sooner! If all Aro's smoked like this I would be mostly an Aro smoker. Imagine here in America the blend in the jar tasting just like it smells thru most of the bowl and at the end, a clean dry pipe! Wow wouldn't that be nice, well here you get that quality smoke! If only all tobaccos were of this of this quality, this is very a rare blend, fantastic! I hope you pick up a tin and see for yourself. Pick some up and fire up a bowl and enjoy the journey!

The tin aroma of this blend is absolutely amazing. Packs and lights with ease, probably the best room note available today.

The only draw back is this blend can bite, and I mean horrible. I tend to be a fast smoker anyway, and any blend with VA can bite me to a certain degree. This blend does however mellow out with age and dry time.

If you want to be the center of attention, pack your pipe with this. I have quite a few 8oz bags cellared for the last few years, and it is only getting better!

Most of what can be said about Blue Note has already been said. But here's my two cents.. If your wife or girlfriend can't stand the smell of your pipe tobacco, try this. I've devoted a pipe to this one mixture alone, mainly because I know I'll always smoke it because my wife loves sitting with me while I do. In fact it's only the second one she's really liked (the other being a "maple" mixture). It makes this whole pipe smoking thing more "us" and less "me," at least with this blend. I actually enjoy English blends more, for a stronger hit and a little more sophistication. That said, this blend does in fact change as you smoke it. It starts out tasting like it smells--fruity, vanilla-ie, etc. But it seems to develop a fuller, smokier taste later on, which is very nice. Blue Note burns extremely well; I don't get the "goop" others have mentioned. The tin scent is out of this world; when I opened my first can I had never smelled anything like it. And that translates into an outstanding smoking experience. I highly recommend.

New pipe smoker.

I usually don't smoke aromatics, because I usually can't taste them. This was an exception. The topping was substantial, although the vanilla sweetness was the strongest. I also got a lot of brown sugar and bread from the cavendish and virginia.

Mechanically, I was disappointed. Quality of the ribbon was poor compared to what I'm used to (spoiled for choice). I found a number of stems and chunks that were unsmokable. It packed ok all the same, lit and stayed lit well. My sample was dry, so minimal moisture.

Overall, not a bad smoke, but not my desert island blend.

I went the gamut with this one. Disliked it the first time I tried it, as it is very sticky and the vanilla bourbon casing is vaguely nauseating. Tried it a few months later, and thought it was the best aromatic I had ever smoked. So, I ordered 1/2 pound. Another several smokes confirmed that this has virtually no tobacco taste, and the casing is cloying. My search for the perfect aromatic continues.

Nonetheless, this continues to be a favorite of many, so give it a try.

I need to buy some more Honey Dew and see if that one also has become too sweet for me. I think I will like this blend more in the summertime. I have 2 ounces to like because that is what I bought. Try as I might, I just can’t find a happy medium with this blend. I dried it, smoked it right from the tin, tried different sized bowls, packed it both loose and firm and took my time with each bowl. Careful or carefree, the results were the same. Blue Note just doesn’t have enough flavor for me. From charring light to the bottom of the bowl, any amount of flavor was fleeting at best. At a gentle sip, I found subtle hints of coconut, fruit & vanilla with a flash of booze, but these flavors came across as minuscule blips hidden within vast amounts of sweet smelling, vapid smoke. Dan Tobacco describes Blue Note as an “extraordinarily mild blend.” Without a doubt, a most spot-on & honest description. Anyway, Blue Note does create an excellent room-note. I just wish there was more to taste.

Popped this tin a week ago and after 5 or so bowls I've made up my mind that it's good but I can't dig it like some other aros. The tin note is a fruit explosion... almost a bubblegum aroma. Not a bad thing I guess. If you're into that then rock n roll (reminds me of the first whiff when busting open a box of Fruit Loops and jamming my head in the bag - I'm ok with admitting that I do that). Smoking this is nice... fruity... sometimes someone sprinkles a little pepper on my fruit. The reason for two stars is I thought this blend was pretty high maintenance. Packed too tight and it burns hotter than the blazes of hell and damnation itself (stole that line from Back to the Future III) and bites like crazy. Packed too loose and I have to puff like a hypoxic maniac to keep it lit. Tried this in three different sized bowls but can't get this one right yet although I really want to. Every once in a while I get a nice taste but then it goes away and I'm fussing like a first time parent that brought their newborn to a fancy restaurant (been there, done that, got a t-shirt). Gets a bit more care-free after the first half of the bowl. I'm not ready to give up on this blend yet... it does taste great. Until I figure Blue Note out, I'll stick to only two stars and one tin for now.

They should have been called it "Blue Nothing".

I purchased a tin of Torben Dansk Blue Note because of its amazing reputation about balanced sweetness, quality of tobaccos and legendary room note.

Thanks to the Spanish Government I just pais it 12€... If I would have paid it in Italy it should have costed me something like 32€ and I would have been really angy about it.

I know that my taste does not appreciate Virginias just by themselves. People talk about several fragrance layers about Virginias, but the outcome for me is something that does not have taste, does not have room note, and it normally costs x2 (i.e. Capstain) or x3 (i.e. Blue Note) of a more balanced, affordable and popular mix (i.e. Skandinavik Mixture).

I need a decent Burley in the Sweet oriented mixtures, because apparently black cavendish and virginias, left alone with some additional scent, they simply don't work for me.

Vanilla flavour is possibly a daydream about someone with a strong fantasy.

Blue Note is simply another Virginia based blend that justifies its reputation just because it costs more than many other tobaccos: because of that it's more exclusive, because of that it gives you the status of a picky and wealthy pipe smoker.

Someone may say "hey dude, Virginias must get a little aged before expressing themselves at their best". True, this is exactly what happened to me with the St.Bruno, but this last one is indeed a well balanced affordable and time tested blend, "Blue Nothing" is not. I smoked it sex months later and it still taste of nothing.

At the end of the day, it costs quite a lot, it tastes almost zero. For sure the quality of tobaccos inside is good because after smoking it does not leave bad taste in your mouth, but I don't see the point of smoking it.

Stay away and pick something more affordable and more tasty: -for an high target, try the NORDING - SEAWEED (tin); -for a budget target, try the SKANDINAVIK MIXTURE (bag).

Excellent aromatic.

One of the best. Sweet and smooth smoke.

As noted in the description, and erroneously noted in some of the preceding reviews, there is no bourbon in this blend. It is Bourbon Vanilla, a variety of the Vanilla plant which has nothing to do with alcohol.

That said, nothing overtly strikes me as vanilla in the flavor. Instead, it’s very reminiscent of pink cotton candy. It’s really delicious when it hits its stride.

* Highly recommended to dry this out before smoking. My preferred method is to place the tobacco on a piece of aluminum foil, and put it in the toaster oven for about 5 minutes or so, at a temperature of roughly 175 degrees Fahrenheit with the door open.

* I believe a nicely broken in meerschaum pipe provides the superior smoking experience. and suggest trying again any blend you may have previously disliked with such a pipe.

Let's revisit a tobacco and a category of tobacco I have avoided for a couple years since I first encountered it. Torben Dansk Blue Note.

This was a tin I had popped open and sampled from two or three years ago, wasn't moved to finish it and let it languish in the back of the cabinet. No reason, it just did.

These days, it isn't as heavily scented in the tin, but more of the natural tobacco note comes through on the nose. This is backed up by the coconut, vanilla and touch of fruit Blue Note is known for. Moisture level is now PERFECT. As others have mentioned, the leaf is in a variety of cuts, ribbon, broken flake, shards....for lack of a better term, and it packs and lights easily. No fuss.

On first light as an aromatic, of course you get a decent shot of the topping, but pay attention as BN is about to shift gears and hit a big tangy red va note. As you sip and puff along all the different va notes come and go, the vanilla/coconut flavor and aroma sometimes shows up as a flavor, sometimes shows as an aroma floating around your head.

The best smoking happens when you keep it on the threshold of going out, then taking a few sip with some side draft. Just when you think it has become a mid-bowl dud and stopped changing flavors, boom. It's starts eveloving again.

DGT works in this case, which isn't always a good idea with an aromatic blend and speaks to the quality of the tobaccos used to make this blend.

BN smokes dry and clean, especially for an aromatic. It hasn't gotten the gurgles, and leaves no nasty goo in your pipe.

I am having a really hard time deciding how to rate this. I want to give it a solid four star rating when competing in the aromatic arena, but if you were to put it up against a straight aged va, it would be a little lacking. In that case, I would like rate it a solid three.....

Closing comments.....recommended. Pairs so well with a good cup of black coffee and has a gentle yet assertive nic hit making for a great breakfast smoke. Sweet, and dessert like enough to be an evening after dinner smoke which will please your company with a classy, room note which makes folks want to tell you how much the love the smell of a good pipe.

This aromatic is an ode to subtlety, beginners who prefer really sweet blends will have a hard time in order to appreciate the true character from this blend, it has a very complex and limited palette of flavours that require certain expertise and disposition to get. It is very "jazzy", that is subtle.

I read somewhere that "Blue note" was made as a tribute to the famous jazz club in New York, the person said that it was mainly a sensuous re-enactment from the place, the general jazzy atmosphere, the odour and sensation from the leather furniture, the warmness and the coolness altogether, the blue note... I think i can imagine all this while i smoked this blend, it does have all those nuances and its intriguing.

It all starts as a timid note flat and constant of virginia and as it gains intensity the musicality from this smoke tunes in. An aroma of leather and soft bourbon takes in, the band is now developing the jam, tobacco dominates above the aromatic and it just varies the intensity from virginia, moderated by the bass lines from the cavendish. At times a little vanilla note jumps in very vaguely adorning the trumpet lines from the domminating virginia, sips from bourbon as you sit and contemplate. The band is in full digression till the mid of the pipe, jamming hard, drums kick in, wildness in the air. Intensity is moderate.

The last quarter is where there is more aromatic approach, a lot more into smoothness, clarinet submerges you into volutes of blue smoke and the atmosphere in your palate receives all the most intensity from vanilla and bourbon, a little citric which remits to general coolness, a little sweetness wall of flavour and virginia strength. You get in, youre seduced by the rhythm, it is endulging and appetizing, it maintains this cadence until it finishes.

Very interesting smoke. Truly complex and mysterious. The flavour is certainly undetermined even though you can detect the components, but the trick is to find the "atmosphere" it creates, the whole blend flavour which sums up the "blue note". Recommended.

Found a tin of this lying forlornly on a back shelf in a tobacconist in Johannesburg and it being a total unknown snapped it up. And a good snap it was...for an aromatic. The tin smell is probably the best I ever smelled: chocolaty sweet, caramel, fudge, almost an ice cream smell. The initial taste is not far from the tin aroma, which is quite nice for an aromatic. A rich sweetness, not a candy sweetness. Again chocolate and almost a cappuccino taste dominates. Unfortunately like most aromatics, the taste wanes towards the second half of the bowl, but never turns rank or sour. Room note is such that my wife chided me from the kitchen for not making her a cup of hot chocolate as well! :-) Overall I'm not such an aromatic fan anymore, but for an early morning light smoke with my morning coffee this is not bad at all. 3 stars.

Dear god, my teeth hurt from the smell of sugar. If blindfolded you would have a hard time identifying which was my pipe, or a bowl of Fruity Pebbles. For how sweet it is, you would expect it to be simply dripping with syrup topping, but it is oddly not gummy to the touch.

Once lit, everything begins to calm down, though there isn't much subtly to the flavor, just pure uncut white crystal sugar. It is a dessert smoke in the purest sense, as hours afterwards your saliva will remain sweet. Others in the room will love it, since it doubles as an amazing air odorizer.

On my quest for the best vanilla aromatic, this one did not hit the mark, there Sweet Vanilla Honeydew did a much better job (and to this day is my favorite vanilla).

While this blend only has Virginia listed without any Burley it is a surprisingly smooth non-irritating mild but flavorful smoke. And that just about covers it. Blue Note smells wonderful in the pouch (I purchased it from bulk)and as you smoke it. The tobacco taste is very muted so I can see why some would shun this. However it is there in a nice pleasant way coated in a mild but rich sweet but hard to identify flavoring. I experience no tongue bite with this aromatic tobacco. It's a very nice, mild, unobtrusive and friendly tobacco that is nice to gently puff away on while driving. Recommended.

a danish aromatic at its best. its an important thing to keep that in mind because if you cannot tollerate aromatic mixtures then you better off from this particular mixture.the tobacco smell reminds my of mac baren cube and sir walter aromatic, yet it smoke better than both. The mixture is of different cuts and take some time to learn how to pack it to your liking but in the end its not rocket science. Burns evenly and relatively quickly. Sweet to the taste and the room note is pleasant. If you like aromatic mixture this one is highly recommended.

10-15-04 I usually give a detailed review, but this blend just did not work for me at all. Smelled good in the tin, but it wasn't tobacco that I smelled! This just burned too hot for me regardless of what pipe I used and the flavor did not taste good to me once flame was applied. I much prefer "Evening Stroll" for a vanilla aromatic. Sorry! After half a 50g. tin, gave the rest away. Rating: 1 out of 5 points, to each, his own...

Extremely sweet aroma in the tin and the room that receives rave reviews in public. I just wish the taste was quite as good; too sweet for me as a steady but enjoyable for a change after a meal. However, this tobacco quality is much higher the the heavily cased domestic drug store aromatics. Golden VA + black cavendish in a nice mix of cuts that burns evenly. Was slightly too wet when the tin was initially opened and it was easier to pack and keep lit after drying slightly. If you enjoy aromatics or are looking for a major change, give this one a try.

The tobacco in question presents itself in the tin as fragrant, sweet and rich in flavor...all good, indeed dare I say ...wow!

I am not a super-estimator of aromatics. Anyway, I try to get some to load my pipe with, after letting it dry for 30 minutes, since it was quite moist.

What can I say...smoking it is a whole different thing than smelling it in its packaging. It can have good room taste, but I usually don't smoke tobacco for room taste. The flavors twist into a mere burnt sugar taste that lingers in the mouth even after smoking, and at least for me, it's not very pleasant. It warms a little, did not bite my tongue.

Definitely an aromatic , sweet ...very sweet... if not too much .

I will definitely not buy the second tin and I think the rest will be trashed...

When I first began my interest in pipe smoking, it was (and still is) common advice to start with aromatics. The question of how profitable this advice is is to be answered elsewhere. But one aromatic that kept being brought up was Dan's Blue Note. Though my experience with it did not make me a convert, I can certainly see why this blend is popular.

First, both the tin note and room note are decadently appealing; to smoke this will make whatever nook you are in smell like a fine bakery that is loaded with the sweetest cakes and confections. To taste it renders a similar result, with swirling vanilla notes up front and taste of dried berries present in body and finish. The smoke, much like the flavor, is creamy and mild.

But like any sweet, it is not something one will want to enjoy all the time. None of the Virginias or other tobaccos manage to express themselves, doused as they are in saccharine. The body is very thin and taste mild to the point where one sometimes feels the need to puff more strenuously than necessary to tease out some depth of flavor (always a bad idea, especially with aromatics). Some others have stated they enjoy this blend because of the variety of flavors present, but I find them to only intermittently show up, like a shy girl trying to get a word in a conversation, only to be drowned out by louder (and almost never more interesting) company.

Even so, I don't want to come down too hard on this blend, because there is much to recommend to it. For beginner smokers or aromatic enthusiasts, there is much to love here: the blend smokes coolly, the taste is mild and sweet, and the room note is second to none and a real crowd pleaser. In fact, I like to keep some handy just in the off chance I may find myself smoking with a crowd sensitive to tobacco, as this is the one blend that manages to avoid offending even the most sensitive to smoke. There are other aromatics out there that are more enjoyable to me, but this blend still has its merits and rightfully has its vocal fans.

The aroma is like that of a raspberry liqueur.

The flavor is a bit nutty, with the taste of the casing. It's like a fuller Lane 1-Q.

I don't know if it's because I purchased this in bulk but bits of burning tobacco came of my pipe on two occasions and each time burnt a tiny hole in the clothes I was wearing. Most tobaccos, even when I would be better off using a wind cap, only have ash flake off, not burning bits of the ember. This leaf quality issue (very possibly just of my sample) knocked it down a star.

This review is based on a fresh tin I sampled back in 2009 before I rejoined TRs. It still remains in my cellar, still fairly fresh & moist with the PG humectant & tobacco stain on the paper inside the tin. Same thing with Solani's 131. I love a good aromatic but I was unable to finish these off. It had a very sweet taste about it but it was more like eating candy than smoking tobacco. I didn't taste the tobacco at all. The room note is awesome however and folks around you will probably start salivating & might consider soothing their sweet tooth just from smelling the smoke aroma.

I prefer aromatics that are topped with a flavoring rather than these types with heavy casing & humectant. If you're an aromatic lover & that's your daily routine, then you can't go wrong with this. It's like candy in a pipe bowl. The tin aroma is enticing & smells heavenly and is as stated on the tin description. It reminded me of a fresh baked fruitcake. Drying out is a must & a bit of rubbing out is required as there are pieces of flake mixed in with the loose stuff. It burns cool with no tongue/palate discomfort. It burned about as good as any non aromatic and I didn't experience the goopy dottle that some have attested to.

However, I did enjoy Blue Note until I got into various other types of blends. My favorite aromatic today is Erik Stokkebye stuff, especially their 4th Generation Family Reserve. If you are in the market for a highly flavored aromatic, treat yourself to some BN. Two thumbs up for an aromatic with plenty of sweet flavor! Recommended only for lovers of aromatics.

Descriptions said ribbon cut, but my fingers said broken/cut flake which needed only the slightest bit of rubbing. The toasted coconut was only a suggestion as the VA leaf was a star here, but not a powerful leaf, if that makes sense.

Fantastically good room note, a tobacco to impress/please others with. Splendid tin aroma, hard to keep lit, even after 15 minutes of drying. What I got from it was what I've found in many of the Pipeworks & Wilke blends, a very rich but subtle tobacco flavor in the low end of the registry with a light fruity casing furnishing the top note. The bourbon spike comes and goes in an interesting way, providing a bit of heat to the citrus and vanilla flavors. Did indeed locate something akin to coconut from time to time. I wanted to like it more than I did, but as has been said, it's quite good and one I hope everyone interested in aromatics would try and enjoy.

I have to admit I'm not an aromatic smoker though I have tried many over the years. I smoke primarily Virginia, Burley, or Virginia-Burley blends and occasionally, a Balkan or English. Having said that, I find this tobacco exceptional as an aromatic. It's primarily a broken flake with a Virginia base. There is some ribbon and some wider pieces. The taste is tobacco and the room note piquent and sweet, though not "in your face" as some aromatics are. The fruitiness is not pronounced nor is the bourbon vanilla but both are there. If you're an aromatic smoker or even if not, you should try this. Recommended.

This product is marketed as having "...exotic fruits and a touch of Bourbon Vanilla... extraordinarily mild..." The casing is very tasty but I wouldn't have been able to identify it. And no way is this mild. This is actually a full-on aromatic with a good nico kick and an underlying robust Virginia tobacco flavor. It's better than the company's marketing department describes it to be.

Blue Note delivers a full load of [what we are told is] exotic fruit/bourbon vanilla flavor in every puff, down to about the last 20% of the bowl. The bottom 20% of the bowl is best discarded, as the flavor profile takes a major downturn towards the bitter and sour as the ash and goo start to pile up; it starts burning too hot; and moderate puffing begins to deliver a bit of gurgling and tongue bite. If you fail to discard the last 20% or so of the bowl, it will have a seriously negative effect on your mouth and pipe, and ruin the enjoyment of the second bowl, should you wish to have a second bowl. Of course, this can be avoided with some drying time, tho it tastes and smells much better when moist.

It burned best when packed tight in a narrow/deep bowl. If you don't pack it quite tight, you won't be able to keep it lit. The tin aroma is very powerful. The flavors aren't separate and distinct, but they come together well. I can handle about 3 bowls of this delicious candy a week. For the experienced aromatic smoker who also appreciates top quality Virginia tobacco. Requires a dedicated pipe, obviously.

For several years I have been smoking the "english" style blends but was craving a change about a year ago.So upon the recommendation of a local tobacconist ( a cigar shop really) I opted to buy a tin of blue note. When I got home and opened the tin I was shocked at the intensity of the aroma from this tobacco. It smells wonderful in the tin ,sweet and fruity with vanilla undertones, I couldn't wait to try it, to taste something that smelled like a candy shop. I remember pulling a bowl full from the tin and the tobacco being a bit tacky and wet to the touch. Once packed into the bowl however, I had a real fight on my hands. For the life of me I could not keep the stuff lit, It smoked incredibly hot, gurgled , sputtered and bit the bejesus out of my tongue. I managed to get through the bowl, which ended up a nice white fluff of ash, and thinking I was done with my evening smoke went about the rest of my evening boy was i wrong. This is a smoke that will stay with you very much like a cigar in that respect. The ashy aftertaste and ghost left in the pipe will remind you for quite some time that you have just finished a bowl of Blue note.

Needless to say that was the first and last bowl of blue note for me until today. with a bit over year of age on the tobac it still has the same wonderful aroma. it has dried a bit and is no longer tacky to the touch as i remember it being. Age seems to do this blend well and it is burning quite nice. very little bite this go round but I admit I have slowed my smoking down tremendously over the last year. I still find the aftertaste to be just to much for me which is why i never took to cigars. It has a lovely room note that my wife almost seems to enjoy.

2 out of 5 for this one. I still like to pull this one out of the cellar and bury my nose in it every once in a while but overall this is still not the smoke for me but Im OK with that.

The aroma from the pouch (I bought mine from a tobacconist's jar) is delicious-- a strong sweet fruity aroma. I would like to try this out of a tin when I get the chance. This burned extremely well--a charring light and then one more light--it burned slowly and evenly right to the bottom. I enjoyed the taste--lot's of citrus and a little sweet, but not too sweet. The citrus flavor definitely dominates, but the Virginias and the Black Cavendish come through as well. The Bourbon flavor comes through too (I would have appreciated even a little more of this). It's not very complex, however; the taste stayed pretty much the same throughout the bowl. It's just a good quality smoking experience, very relaxing, and the room note is quite nice. One of the few aromatic tobaccos I can actually smell in the air while smoking it. It bites the tongue a wee bit during smoking, especially if pushed (and it burns so well it doesn't need to be pushed!), but this doesn't last long after completion of the bowl. One could drink soda after this without any discomfort. Overall, I find this a tasty and enjoyable good quality tobacco. 3.5 stars.

As my experience with trying tobaccos not available in my native country (U.K) continues whilst I holiday in the State of Florida USA, my next stop was 'Blue Note' by Dan tobacco.

Previously I had heard this was the aromatics to beat all aromatics, and I must admit I have been keen to try this for a while.

Upon opening the tin, the leaves were very bright, and the cut was an almost haphazard cacophony of different shapes and styles (Shag, Ribbon, broken flake). The aroma is very bubble-gummy and it's clear that this will smell pleasant upon lighting.

Once lit I was expecting to be bowled over by a rich array of vanilla creams, berry's, molasses, fruit, etc.. However I found that whilst a nice aromatic, that was all it was...nice.

It reminded me a little of Petersons Connoisseur's choice. However I find CC is a much richer fuller aromatic with more pronounced fruitiness than Blue Note, and as such I prefer the former if given the choice.

So Blue Note is quite nice, and will please those around you with it's sweet aroma. However for a deeper richer more potent and luxurious aromatic there are others available that trump Blue Note, such as Petersons CC.

Still it's another one off the list of 'Not available in the UK' blends that I have sampled whilst abroad.

I have heard so much about this blend and wanted to try it. Even though my tastes are leaning to more English type tobaccos, I will always enjoy an occasional aromatic.

I tried the bulk blend. This has a very fruity smell. Packs well and took two charring lights to get it going. Keep in mind I was outside on a slightly windy day reading a book, so this may have influenced my rating. I will rate it again later.

I was trying to be cautious about tongue bite and didn?t want to puff to aggressively. It kept going out on me. It went really well with my flavored coffee though. I made it about half way through the bowl as I realized I was beginning to puff to hard and fast in the attempt to keep it going. I dumped it out and noticed some moisture build up in the bottom. Hey, it?s an aromatic, after all.

I think this would be a great indoor smoke. Something to please the people around you and without any outside influence, something you could take your time and enjoy without being worried about tongue bite. I didn?t get bitten, but I also didn?t finish the bowl.

Try it, you will either like it or not.

I smoked this in a fresh cob because so many reviews report the shadow, the gunk and it has received a lot of less than glowing reviews. First off upon lighting it up, I wondered wheres all this burst of flavor? It smells great and slightly sour in the tin, but I did not get much at first, not even a great aroma. Understand that I am more of a burly man, not much of an aromatic man, and don't really like vanilla flavoring.

So... I did notice that even though I puffed fast trying to get the flavoring, it just would not burn fast for me, was ever so gentle on my tongue, and did not put out a lot of smoke like a lot of blends. I kept with it anyway, I mean I have a full tin, and about halfway down through the bowl, I started to notice that, gee this is pleasurable. As it burned down more, I really started liking it and it started to smell great! By the bottom of the bowl, I thought, WOW, this is good stuff and is great with a cup of tea! While I would not make this my regular daily, it is a good treat smoke, and one that the aroma would WOW people around me. So, I think I will be keeping a tin around for when I feel like a sweet. I did notice my mouth grew dry, so it requires a drink in hand, but so what, I always do anyway. This is a terrific aromatic, even for someone who does not tend towards them. Try it!

As far as aromatics go, this one is a tolerable smoke. The tin note is of a vanilla fruit basket.

Can be syrupy when fresh, so I recommend letting it dry out a little beforehand. Though it does burn hot, it will stay lit as you let it cool. Pacing your smoke will help. Mild nicotine content.

Most of the Dan Tobacco line is too cased for me. This however is one that I'll keep around as an occasional dessert.

Plum Cake. Open the tin and think Christmas... this tobacco smells like a plum pudding cake. It packs easily with just the right amount of spring, lights easily and stays lit, and the room note is a real crowd pleaser (there are times when this is an important consideration, no?). You get what you pay for. There is true quality in this aromatic blend. No goopy casing here. Tired of slurpy-gummy aromatics? Give this a try. Burns dry to the bottom of the bowl producing a nice grey ash and very little dottle. A nice all day smoke.

This is an excellent medium VA aromatic. It reminds me (dare I say it?) of Royal Yacht with regard to its VA components, strength, taste and nicotine level.

The fruity-vanilla topping is great, fig and raisin essence with vanilla developing as the tin mellowed with air exposure. I liked this one and found I had finished a tin quickly, as good a sign as any that I really liked it. It does burn hot and rapidly so enjoy cautiously, perhaps letting your pipe sit occasionally till it almost goes out, then puff away again.

This is a new classic. Well done Dan. A solid 4 stars.

Good Draw to You,

Okay, I have to defend my blend. This is an aromatic's dream. Very full room note pleasing to most and has sometimes a sweet tangy smell and flavor. However, you have to be patient and smoke this cool in the winter probably 50F or below. Can't puff away like you would an English, more of a Virginia and the weed in this blend is always top notch and don't buy in bulk because some evil tobacconist's...well maybe that's what they are call a bulk blend Blue Note...which is not DAN tobacco. Okay, I'll make a more detailed less infamitory review later...either you love it or hate it, but I'll introduce any new pipe smoker to this blend before most...happy new year everyone!!!

I managed to get a sample of this in bulk, and was excited to try this very much reviewed blend. I was immediately taken back by the smell in the pouch, vanilla with vinegar possibly, I could detect no bourbon flavor or smell.

Upon lighting I was disappointed to find a standard aromatic on the level of Captain Black Gold. I was further confused by the room aroma, smoky, like an English, not at all fragrant; so this isn't even pleasant for those around you. I won't be buying this again, but it might do something for you, a tobacco liked by so many must have some appeal.

I liked everything about Blue Note - the name, the tin design, aroma, the nice golden colored tobacco - except actually smoking it.

Blue Note is a cigar store jar aromatic dressed in a nice tin. The tins cost about $8. I have had a dozen aromatics that were better in every way in the $3 range.

Blue Note has a strong and sweet tin aroma that does not hold up when smoking. After taking in the tin aroma, one expects a number or flavors to be involved but only vanilla shows up.It starts out sweet but completely bland. It loses the sweetness and then it is just bland. It does not burn well. Even the aroma is weak and boring.

I do not smoke many aromatics, but if I were going to smoke an inferior blend, I would choose one whose price reflects its quality, something like 1Q.

10/08/2004:I don't smoke this often but I am uprating it to that catagory because it is tops in its' class...which is Aromatic tobacco. The initial smell on opening the tin is...room deoderizer! Really this stuff is pungent! Handle with care. This is a great aromatic tobac. Smoke it in a cob or Grabow. I think the scent would permeate anything it comes in contact with. If you like strongly flavored, sweetened tobacco blends with some real tobacco taste ....this is it! If you are not sure try to beg a bowlfull before purchasing. I think this is one of those love-it or hate-it blends.

11/16/2006 Update: No longer in my rotation. Too "over the top" in scent and flavor. Still recommend for Aromatic lovers.

Somewhere alone the line, Blue Note seems to have become the world's most popular premium aromatic. Every pipe smoker I know has tried it and a fair amount love and swear by it. I suppose that I can see why. When, for the latter half of the twentieth century, aromatic has meant a base of poor quality Burley treated with all manner of preservatives and flavoring agents that really only serve to ruin a pipe, a full flavored aromatic made with high-end Virginias and black Cavendish such as Blue Note would indeed be an enthralling discovery.

Once again, the ingredients of this blend are of the highest quality and what I can determine of the flavoring is indeed natural, complex, and even inspired. There is one thing that serves to detract from all things in Blue Note's favor, however. This is that it burns hotter than a bank robber's pistol. Virginia tobacco hath a high sugar content as it is and will burn hot if improperly prepared or smoked; the sugary syrups that are heavily ladled onto Blue Note in blending only augment this. In years of smoking Virginia I have rarely experienced tong bite, but Blue Note torched me every time. As a result, any nuances of flavor that could have been experienced either from the leaf itself, or from the well-intentioned aromatic agent, were rendered moot. Another unpleasant aspect was how I had to keep setting my pipe down because the bowl and even the stem kept getting literally too hot to handle.

There are some good aromatics in this world. I find that the classic American school of blending has done them the best. The Base tobacco must be Burley of the finest quality, bright and red Virginia are veritable condiments, and the aromatic agents, whatever they may be, though deer tongue and liquorices were always popular favorites, were not sauces so much as essences sprayed over the blend. Such was the pinnacle and such does Blue Note fail to achieve.

Regards,

A. Morley Jaques

If you are going to smoke an aromatic, let it be this one. No goopy burley, or drugstore foo here, but a great blend of Virginias and black Cavendish tobacco cased with tuti-fruiti-vanilla stuff. The tin aroma makes you want to grab a spoon. It smells that good.

The room note is fantastic. No one except the nastiest nanny will complain about it.

The tobacco is rich and dark and comes in a broken cake mixed with ribbon. A lot of reviewers have said let this one dry out and you will have a much better smoking experience. If you?re an impatient type (and I know there are at least few of us that get bummed when we can?t have a fantastic smoke right out of the gate) rub the tobacco out. It?s broken cake; rub it out to your desired consistency. It will dry out and become easier to pack and keep lit.

As to smoking?the casing is really heavy, but about mid-way through the bowl the VAs and Cavendish really come into their own. Unlike a lot of aromatics, Blue Note is chock full of quality tobacco. It is not the ?dregs swept off the floor of a Swisher Sweets factory? as an English smoking friend once complained.

This blend is highly recommended to all aromatic briar friars, and to those devotees of the pipe who are looking for a change of pace from their Balkans and English blends.

A word of warning: do not smoke this in a pipe you plan on using for any non-aromatic tobacco. It will taint your pipe something fierce and the Latakia blend that you love like a mistress will taste like a shoe full of flowery foot powder.

Just by reading the 70 plus reviews already written, it's not hard to imagine that this is, what might be called, a very unusual blend. I smoke aromatics about half the time and have tried more than I care to remember over the past 15 years, but this one stakes a claim. One of the attributes of any aromatic that I like is that it comes through every time I lite it up. But one of the special attributes of Blue Note is that it is never completely predictable. Whether it be in a different pipe or just my taste buds being in a "different mood", I'm almost always greeted by a small but noticeable "surprise".

There is always the noticeable taste and fragrance of vanila, but also a myriad of fruit flavorings and others that are a complete mystery, floating around in the background.

For me, this is not an all day tobacco, in part due to fact that it is difficult to find in anything but 50g tins, but without doubt it will have a place in the old tobacco cellar.

I bought this based on some of the reviews that laud it as the near perfect aromatic. Thus far in my foray into pipe-smoking, I have smoked exclusively aromatics, so such a frequent comment was irresistible to me.

I agree with the reviewer how called this Juicy Fruit in tobacco form. In fact, that is exactly what it tastes like. It smells good enough in the tin to eat, and the room note is flowery fragrant. I smoked a bowl of this in the car one day before picking up my girlfriend, and she mistook the aroma for "a really good air freshener." It certainly will not offend, and will more likely attract non-smokers.

As for the tobacco itself, the variety of cuts make it burn really well. Typically all it takes is one lighting to get through 75% of the bowl. The taste doesn't change much with a relight either. I have not noticed the true tobacco flavor which many others have noted to occur towards the end of the bowl. It tastes like tropical fruits all the way down to me.

While I like this, it probably will not become a staple smoke for me. I just can't handle the same strong fruity flavor all the time. I'll definitely keep it around, though, for when the fancy strikes me.

First things first, I must state that this review is a bit tentative. I'm not quite done making up my mind about this stuff, so a couple more bowls are needed...

That being said, let's get on with the review. This tobacco has hands-down the strangest tin smell I've yet encountered; almost like flowery perfume. It had a nice mixture of colors and cuts, but it's also unbearably mosit in the tin. Let this stuff dry out before smoking it.

Upon getting it going, it tastes of vanilla and fruit, though I can't say precisely what fruit...my taste buds need to recuperate after a longtime cigarette habit. Though it's pretty good about staying lit, it is nevertheless a badly behaved blend. It smokes quite warm, especially when smoked fast or further toward the bottom of the bowl. It also has the dubious honor of being the first blend I've smoked that made a pipe cleaner come out nearly black. However, consensus is that it smells rather good.

Aromatic smokers will love this stuff, so it gets two stars on those merits. I'll update this review if my opinions change, but I honestly don't see that happening.

=UPDATE=

After smoking this blend a bit more, I am happy to say that I was wrong! In between the initial review and the update, I let it dry out more (an absolute must with this stuff), and the two bowls I smoked after additional drying were much better behaved. The smell is also a definite crowd pleaser; I've received many positive accolades on it. While this is still by no means something I'd smoke regularly, it is a nice change-of-pace and smoke-around-others blend.

If you don't like aromatics or the typical vanilla and wiskey Danish tobaccos then don't bother disapointing yourself. That said, I find it stonger in smell than in the flavoring. As I packed my first bowl I noticed the different cuts of tobacco but had no trouble with getting a nice pack on my pipe. The tobacco seemed to be of first-rate leaf.

I found the tobacco to light and burn well with just light tamping throughout the smoke. At mid-bowl the flavor is slightly less sweet and a bit deeper, but is still consistent with the start of the bowl. The bowl finished with a light gray ash with very little doodle.

No need for constant tamping, stays burning. As others have noted about tounge bite, I disagree. I am use to smoking cigs. for four years, and smoked three packs a day. I smoke the pipe heavily, and received no tounge bite.

If you are breaking away from a constant routine and are trying something new, go for Blue Note.

I generally look for good bargains or sublime experiences and this one is neither to me. It was worth a stop in my tobacco tour and I am sure it appeals very much to some people. The people in the tobacco shop told me that it is the best selling aromatic from Dan Tobacco. I find that there are other smokes at a fraction of the price, like Prince Albert Cherry Vanilla or a Captain Black blend for examples, that I can fire up when I smoke to please my wife rather then myself. Sometimes you just have to trust your best friends when it comes to recommendations because as I read the reviews here, they seem overall to be 'mixed.' But I LOVED this stuff! A friend recommended it and I was not disappointed. Upon opening the tin, it has a scrumptious nose, to the point where I almost wanted to eat it. Even when I am not smoking anything, I sometimes just open the tin for a good whiff. The secret to this blend is in the nose - it has one of the best room notes I've ever encountered. Light a bowl of this and the wife (or girlfriend, in my case) will swoon - she'll cozy up to you and cuddle. It's basically sweet, yes - but far more complex than most Cavendishes. Fruity and slightly nutty, but never overwhelming. It is very gentle on the nose - and irresistibly alluring. My only criticism is that, especially if smoked too fast, (1) it has an unexpected bite, and (2) it has a little more of a nicotine kick than I like (and I normally smoke full-bodied English/Orientals, too). For that reason, I cannot give it a full 4 stars. It fully deserves three-and-a- half stars, but there is no such category here, I guess. This will be one of my staples and, yes, I will recommend it to others every chance I get.

Holy fruitcakes, Batman! Opening a tin of this stuff smells like you are in a pinapple strawberry coconut cookie factory. This tobacco is all about topping, so if you are expecting any kind of natural tobacco flavors then look somewhere else.

Flavor wise, I find this stuff to be kind of bitey and rather harsh on the tongue. It does have a strong fruit flavor more than anything else. This stuff is probably best used as a crowd pleaser to be smoked at picnics and such. I smoke a bowl every once in a while at home, just for a change, but overall this doesn't do it for me.

For an aromatic type tobacco, I think its a bit too harsh on the tongue to be really enjoyable. I'd also recommend smoking this stuff in your dedicated aromatic pipe, or a corncob, because I imagine the flavors would taint a briar for ages. This is an interesting tobacco, and I'm glad I tryed it, but I don't think I'll be getting this again.

If Juicyfruit were a tobacco, this would be it. Excellent base blend, horrible topping. That's in my opinion, though. It's very distinctive, I'll give it that, and some people really love this stuff.

My natural instinct upon opening this up was to try to place the aroma. I read someone describe the smell as a grape bubble gum..that would probably be more accurate.

I popped a tin at the local tobacco shop and some old guy loaded up his pipe, did a ton of complaining and just plain gave up. He promptly bought a four ounce bulk latakia house blend to "correct" his pipe. Then he gave me a scolding. It was hilarious.

Though I had to restrain myself from giving it a lick, I was a little leery of it being overly sweet. Smoked, however, the taste reminds me of a cross between MacBaren's Vanilla Cream and Captain Black?but with the addition of a light coconut essence. The taste, in fact, is not as nearly sweet as I would expect from its tin aroma. Best of all, this is a quality tobacco that lights easily and burns very well. It has, of course, a very pleasing room scent that anyone would be hard pressed to find offensive. This might be one of the best places to start for the beginning pipe smoker.

Tin Opening - Vanillas dominate the aroma, mild vanillas though that doesn?t overwhelm you unlike some of the thicker artificial bulk blends out there.

Packing-Packs well in every pipe I?ve smoked it in.

Lighting-Two matches and a tamp.

First Impression-The vanilla aromas waft out and delight the room. The tobacco tastes like an aromatic should, primarily tobacco slight nuances of topping mingled together.

Mid Bowl-Midway through the bowl, the flavor mellows out into an excellent smooth aromatic. This smokes very cool, cooler then any other aromatic I?ve ever smoked but you have to keep from puffing to quickly or it will get hot like any aromatic. Some flavoring is still present but the tobaccos dominate the flavor.

Finish-By the end of the bowl, the tobaccos are the only tastes left as the toppings have pretty much burned off. As a testament to the quality of the leaf, this smokes well all the way through.

Over all-An outstanding smoke for when an aromatic is desired. I am biased as it is my favorite aromatic.

OK, I tried this because Frenchy is constantly pushing it as the ultimate aromatic. It just may be, but I can't say it changed the world for me. I found it dry as I opened the tin, but I suspect this was not as it should be and that maybe my tin had been opened previously. It smelled exactly like Peterson's Sunset Breeze in the tin. Packed well, lit well, and burnt very well to a white ash, very well behaved. Tasted identical to Sunset Breeze but, I would choose Blue Note over SB becasue it is well behaved. My old standby aromatic, Black Bellied Tree Duck, still seems to be an equal, if not better than Blue Note. I don't see any complexeties here, just an amoretta-vanilla aromatic. Maybe it will grow on me, as it has Frenchy.

Blue Note is one of the many perfect aromatics to keep on hand if your only concern is room note.

It has a berry like taste and aroma but is rather moist for a tinned product and will leave quite a bite for most.

There are far better aromatics available for the smoker who wants the qualities of a more enjoyable tobacco without the bite.

After hearing so much about this baccy, I just had to try it. I'm not disappointed!

The pouch aroma of this tobacco smells a lot like butterscotch. In my opinion, the smoking flavor tastes like a sweet butterscotch. Room note seems to be butterscotch and vanilla.

If you're into aromatics, you might want to at least sample this tobacco.

I must say that I purchased this tin from the reviews of another website, let just say that the reviewers over there must have completely different tastes.

Moisture content was a little moist in the tin but a few days in the jar worked wonders. The aroma was full of fruity sweetness enhanced by vanilla, enough to make your mouth water.

Blue note packed easy, held a light nicely and smoked straight through the bowl leaving a light-gray ash.

Emerging flavors were vanilla, vanilla, vanilla, and a fruity sourness that progressed all the way up the bit. The tobacco did seem to burn a little hot around the mid bowl but mellowed back down (almost like I just had packed it slightly tight mid bowl).

So far the only comments I have received were that blue note carried the ?traditional pipe aroma?. If you are looking for a crowd pleaser this may work. In the right crowd this would definitely be a pleaser but you can never make everyone happy.

I would recommend this to those who like the fruity aromatics, but I don?t plan on stocking it in the future?. But don?t get me wrong if I found a tin in my mailbox or received it as a gift I would find a way to enjoy it!

I enjoy most types of tobacco but this one completely struck out with me. What is unusual is that it is very similar to another Dan blend, Sweet Vanilla Honeydew, which I love. From my viewpoint, they took Honeydew and started adding "stuff" in a misguided effort to improve it. In this case, that stuff took the form of a fruit topping that doesn't at all gibe with the vanilla. Despite the tobacco being first rate leaf, it has simply been ruined by the blender's exhuberance. I mailed my tin off to a fellow ASP member who could more properly appreciate it.

GOOD FOR SMOKING IN PUBLIC!!! Best smelling tin I've ever opened but I find it way too sweet to smoke on any kind of regular basis. It smokes ok, but bites my tongue and jaws. One positive thing: while not being a good smoke, this blend will impress others with it's sweet smell. UPDATE: I have the same tin that I bought 6 months ago that's dried out some; now that it's much drier, it doesn't bite my tounge any more.

Very similar to Sweet Vanilla Honeydew (so I recommend you to read my review for this tobacco, too), both in tin aroma and in smoke flavor. They are almost identical: the differences lie in the presence of a subtle fruity essence to Blue Note in addition to the dominating vanilla, and in a noticeable helping of black cavendish. As with SWH, it is a quality aromatic, very sweet and sugary (the tin aroma is almost nauseating) but not excessively goopy in comparison. The flavoring seems natural enough (though strong), and the room note will please most non-smokers. Not really my kind of tobacco (I get easily nauseated by its excessive sweetness, and when I finish this tin - which has been open for three months and isn't empty yet - I will certainly avoid buying another for some years), but highly recommended if you want an aromatic different from the thousands of drugstore cavendish blends that plague the shops.

The tin smells of strawberry, raisin, and vanilla. It's very pleasant. My only wish is that these smokes could taste more like they smell. The tin was an absolute chore to open, but most tins are.

The taste is good. Even if I draw too fast, I get a different taste (that most consider bad) but I still enjoy it. I do regularly burn my tongue. I can never seem to help it. I just do, but the flavor (which is totally unlike the smell, but still good.) Is somewhat fruity, but what you're really tasting is the virginia tobacco. Cavendish doesn't have any real depth, but it provides a slight smokiness. There is a sweetness that the virginia provides, and the only pain in the butt is keeping the pipe clean smoking these. There's always a wet residue left over when I smoke these too fast, and unfortunately, I do most of my pipe smoking whle driving. (Thus not paying the attention I should)

I've outgrown this blend, but it's fine for beginners.

In deference to the poor reader who has already read more than twenty reviews of Blue Note, I'll add just a brief note. Blue Note, like Disneyworld, is terrific for mindless summer slumming. Life in Disneyworld is not one to which I aspire, but in small doses, and especially in summer, diable, ont de l'amusement.

NB: Dedicate a pipe to this. The flavor sticks around like a broke brother-in-law.

Update 7/30/04. This is now the second season that I have smoked Blue Note during the stupefying heat of high Central Texas summer. In July and August this tobacco works when I don't even want to look at my matured Virginias and pedigreed Englishes. Blue Note is made of good tobaccos, doesn't bite or turn bitter in the bowl, and the sweetness seems just right when you're contemplating installing enough air conditioning to suck small dogs up into the return vents. Call me a girly man, if you like, but then come down here, and deal with this heat, and we'll see what you smoke. Rating upgraded. I'll probably smoke this for two months next summer, too.

Blue Note?. What an aromatic! Wow, this has to be the sweetest pipe tobacco I have ever had. The flavor is supposed to be fruit, but all I can taste is the vanilla bourbon that comes off as a caramel flavor to me. Very bold, very sweet, and a room not that will have people smiling.

It burned amazingly dry and cool for such a heavily cased tobacco.

This was the best aromatic of which I was aware . . . until Cornell & Diehl's "Autumn Evening", that is. But while I consider "Autumn Evening" to be the best aromatic out there, "Blue Note" is a close second. Naturally, one must like aromatics to like Blue Note. I don't think anyone who smokes English-type blends on a regular basis will ever like aromatics. I myself have never gotten to like Latakia and I've been smoking a pipe for 25 yrs. While I prefer more natural blends of Burley, VA and/or Perique, really don't mind casings and flavorings as long as the tobacco in question retains significant body and strength. Fortunately, Blue Note has said body and stength in addition to its superlative aroma and excellent flavor. Much like House of Windsor's "Field & Stream" or "Bourbon Street", I believe underlying the fruit and vanilla aroma there is good tobacco flavor, body and strength. Unlike some aromatics, one is not left with tongue biting, tasteless hot steam halfway down the bowl. This is quite good all the way down and is relatively moisture free, especially for an aromatic. I find Blue Note to be satisfying, which, in my opinion, is the ultimate test. In conclusion, I give Blue Note a grade of "B+".

About a year ago I tried my first tin of Blue Note. Several tobacco forums had people recommend this blend for those who like aromatics and so I wanted to give this a try.

When I first cracked open the tin, I was overwhelmed by the fruity smell. It was very pleasant and seemed like something that should be eaten rather than smoked. The tobacco was very wet and needed to dry a bit.

When I fired up my pipe, the room note was pretty strong but I particularly like a crowd-pleasing pipe blend. This tobacco fits the bill in this regard, that's for sure. Everyone that would smell this brand commented on the great smell.

It seems like Blue Note burned a bit hot and I had a lot of tongue bite. That would be because the tobacco doesn't lend itself to a lazy enjoyment. The sweet flavor/smell seems to make me smoke it more quickly as if I was eating a piece of cake. Hard to eat sweets at a slow pace!

Initially I thought I found "my" aromatic. However as the months went by, I was disappointed with the lack of substance to the tobacco. Yes it smelled nice but after a bowlfull, I felt like I had just had a bunch of smoke - it seemed to become more like eating cotton candy than having a slice of rich pastry. It left me unsatisfied.

I am on the fence on this one. On the one hand it meets my needs for a great smelling tobacco and something that tastes sweet. However, I also feel like I waste my time after my smoke because there isn't anything else to this brand. I may keep it on hand to share with other pipe smokers that I run across that like aromatics and that have never tried Blue Note. Otherwise I am not sure I will use this more than sweetening up the room.

I got my start on aromatics, like many. I enjoy, on occassion the Black Cherry blends, Irish Blessing, and such, although lately I've moved more and more into English blends.

That said, Blue Note has become one of my favorites. It smokes nicely, and creates a nice fluffy ash at the end.

The room note is great, my daughter loves the smell, and the taste is interesting, rather smoky.

The aftertaste is nowhere near as strong as with most aromatics, and I haven't noticed much tongue bite either.

All the way around, this has become one of my tops.

When I read the reviews on Blue Note, I tried to put my hands on the tobacco, but could not find it in Israel. Being in Spain and England last year, I could not find it there also. I e-mailed Dan Tobacco in Germany and they were kind enough to send a sample package. It was delightful! It was all that I could hope for. So I asked a friend to bring me 3 tins from New York City. It was a disaster! The tobacco was unpleasant to smoke, acrid and harsh. I had to throw away the tins. Suddenly, the Importer of Dan Tobacco in Israel started to import Blue Note in 50 Gr. packs . It was the same pleasant and wonderful smoke that most of you are describing here. Could it be that Dan Tobacco manufactures 2 different blends under the same name?

I purchased a tin of Blue Note on a whim; mostly because I wanted to see what all of the fuss was about. I am not a fan of aromatic tobaccos in general, and this one is no different.

Upon opening the tin, the aroma is cloyingly sweet and (to my schnoz) sickeningly artificial. I find myself hoping that it tastes better than it smells. The well-cut ribbons appear to be mostly dark Cavendish, with a few errant strands of lighter (Virginia?) wandering about. The blend is moist, but not as wet as many other cased blends I have tried.

Upon lighting up, I am presented with a very sweet, cool, dense smoke. There is no tobacco flavor whatsoever. Mid-bowl, the flavor is slightly less sweet and a bit deeper, but is still very consistant with the start of the bowl (this is not necessarily a good thing). A bit of gurgling, but drying out the ribbons might fix that problem. The finish was not pleasant - hot, raspy and still sickeningly sweet.

It's a good thing that I smoked this in a cob, because after three bowls over two days I think that any briar exposed to this blend will be marked for life with the essance of Eau de Dr. Pepper. The aftertaste in my mouth was both oily amd soapy, reminiscent (to my buds) to canned black olives.

In case you can't tell, I do not care for this blend. When I want a little sweetness in my smoke I rely on the natural caramelly goodness of a quality Virginia blend like 5100.

Being I love a good aromatic I will be the first to say I'm bias, although, if the fruity were not in Blue Note I believe it would be a carbon copy of their Sweet Vanilla Honeydew which I also enjoy smoking. Wheww!!! Talk about a very intense aromatic! This stuff has the most flavoring I have ever tried in an aromatic. It has high quality leaf however- and that truly makes all the difference. Although you can taste very little tobacco over the casing- what you can taste is most definitely virginia. I love the vanilla boubon aroma in the can and can pick up a bit of cherry as well. This aroma is from this point on the predominant taste and smell for the whole bowl. Needless to say other people absolutely love the room note. I have taken to mixing it with McClelland's bulk #5100 half anf half for a little bit more tobacco flavor and fullness. I still can't say that this is one of my favorite tobaccos- purely because I am not a fan of aromatics. However, I can recognize a quality tobacco when I smoke one and this is definitely that. If you want to try an aromatic with quality leaf anf casing and don't want to smoke a bowl of propylene glycol- give this stuff a try. You won't be disappointed!

I normally do not smoke aromatics. This, however, is an exception. This blend is all about aroma. Both in the tin and in the air, it has that unique aroma that non pipe smokers think what pipe smoke should be. In fact, I can barely taste the tobacco. This is one of the few blends where I can smell the aroma while I smoke. In fact, the aroma takes over and masks any taste that I would normally have. Luckily, it is a very pleasant aroma. For an aromatic, it does not bite. I picture people floating in the air as they do in cartoons when getting a whiff of Blue Note Aroma....?as they are drawn to its source. In many ways this reminds me of Iwan Ries Three Star Blue except that Blue Note does not bite. In fact, for an aromatic, it burns dry, does not require re-lights, and finishes with a very fine, light gray ash. I bought this in bulk, and will keep it around for an occasional smoke, but only in a Meerschaum. I see no reason except for future availability to cellar this. I cannot not see it improving much with age.

This tobacco burns well, stays lit (after air drying in the tin)and I didn't notice any after taste left in my pipes.

My wife didn't like the room note, but then, I'm one of those fortunate fellows who's SO prefers the smell of natural tobaccos.

I find the scent descriptions curious Blue Note smells like Blue Note. I have yet to find such a sweet smelling tobacco that does not burn the palate. I truley doubt there ever will be for to be sweeter smelling than this blend would be overwhelming. It is not an overwhelming taste though and that is possibly the genius of this blend. Please note I like aromatics and Virginia based blends but am not a fan of Latakia... which tastes medicinal to me. Blue Note seems to me to be very much like Solani 369, just not as refined. Upon opening the tin, the vanilla smell overpowers all the others. The tobacco was overly moist, but being a newbie I put it in the old Peterson meer anyhow. The tobacco lit well, but did not stay lit for very long. The bowl needed constant re-lighting I was instantly greeted with a very full body vanilla smell and taste. While not completely over powering, it was very strong to me. Important note that while strong, the taste was pleasant.

I was also greeted by quite a bit of gurgle (probably from over moist tobacco) and at the bottom there was so much goop it was difficult to light.

The room aroma left a little to be desired, and remained for well over 24 hrs without any other smoking being done.

All in all, not a bad smoke, maybe better if dried out first. Definitely not an everyday one though.

Tin Aroma: The tin says that it smells like 'exotic fruits and a touch of bourbon vanilla.' I smell sugar, vanilla, and sugar. The smell of this is almost nauseating it is so syrupy. If the taste is anywhere near as cloying as the smell, this will be a short experiment.

Physical Characteristics: Pleasant to look at in the tin, this is a nicely balanced mixture of tan, brown and black pieces, in a sort of crinkly ribbon cut. It packs well, but fluffs up immensely on the charring light. Seems that Dan Tobacco loves to ship their tobacco sopping wet, which is not a plus in my book. Tobacco is taxed by weight, so I would rather pay for tobacco, not water or Propylene Glycol.

Notes: I was hoping for something refined and dignified when I first encountered this, along the lines of Ashton's Original Oldchurch, but this is far more like Dan Tobaccos other Aromatics I have smoked, most notable being the Ocean Liner series. A word of warning: whether you like this tobacco or not, you will need a pipe dedicated to just it to try it. Nothing seems to hang on to the bowl like this does. Hell, it even left an aftertase in a meerschaum. On first light, it becomes obvious that this is not nearly as bad a tobacco as the tin aroma would lead one to believe. It is obvious that the base tobaccos used in this blend are of a high quality. My theory is that this is another Dan Tobacco blend (Copenhagen: Cavendish), cased to the gills and repackaged. The first half of the bowl always makes me think: 'this must be what it would be like to smoke good Virginia tobacco in a pipe that had been smoked by an aromatic lover for many years.' Not exactly what I go looking for in a tobacco blend. That said, the aromatic component does calm down a bit after the first third of the bowl, and tapers off to about the two thirds mark. It never completely goes away, but it becomes mild enough to allow you to really get at the excellent virginias underlying this vanilla and sugar madness.

Verdict: As many others have said, this is liable to be about as non-offensive a pipe tobacco as you can come up with, but that really is a piss-poor attribute to sell a tobacco on. This is a good bit over the top for me, but I could heartily recommend it to any aromatic smoker, as it is of the highest quality.

Many people whose opinions I've read seem to feel that this is one of the best aromatic tobaccos out there. It is indeed very good, the tobacco high-quality and the smoke cool and bite-free, but I tend to prefer other flavors in aromatics myself. Nevertheless, I absolutly recommend that anyone who likes good, well-done aromatics try this one. The tin aroma is strong and very unique - it smells EXACTLY like grape bubble gum! It took me forever to place the smell, but I finally remembered it from when I was younger. The appearance is also different from most tobaccos: blacks, browns and tans in many different sizes, from large chunks to unrubbed flake to short, narrow ribbon. The moisture level is average to a bit high, and packing it tricky due to the varried nature of the blend. It does light easily, however, and burns well, needing a below average number of relights. For the first third, the flavor is mixed. I can sense the grape gum flavor, but I think I'm mostly smelling it rather than tasting it. The smoke is sweet but not overwhelmingly so; the taste is not nearly as strong as the smell. The casing, while strong enough, still merges nicely with the tobacco base without overwhelming it. The added flavor is somewhat of a cross between grape/vanilla and something else I can't place, while the tobacco is very mild and good but uncomplicated. There is also no bite at all, and the smoke is very nice exhaled through the nose. In the second third of the bowl, the casing lessens somewhat, though it is still present. The natural tobacco flavor is very mild, not full or complex but plesant regardless. There are no moisture problems with this blend thus far, and still no tongue bite. The smoke is smooth and thick. In the last third of the bowl, there is a bit of gurgle, taken care of with a pipe cleaner. The grape/vanilla taste is still the strongest note in the flavor, and the main feature of the smoke is mildness. It finishes quickly leaving some moisture at the bottom of the bowl. Overall, this is a good aromatic blend. It smells wonderful, and leaves a very nice room note. While I prefer other flavors in my aromatic tobaccos, I can see why many people love this one. If you enjoy aromatics, by all means try this!

Blue Note is a tobacco I keep around to impress the ladies. No, really, I am serious. It is one of my 'public' smokes for those times when even a sweet virginia flake with a slight topping is too tobacco-ey. Blue Note never fails. It is clear upon opening the tin that this is a quality tobacco, not merely crap tobacco sweeped off the floor and sprayed with sugar. The tobacco is a broken flake form. The tin aroma, I msut admit, is my favorite tin aroma of ANY tobacco. It smells so delicious that I want to grab a spoon and chow down. Yes, it smells THAT delicious. The fruity/vanilla flavoring is fairly intense when compared to the tobacco but seems to relinquish the taste monopoly a bit and allow the sweetness of the Virginias to gain prominence as it approaches mid-bowl. Be warned, it can burn rather hot. As with many other true aromatic tobaccos, watch your tongue. I usually allow it to dry out a bit as it is too moist straight out of a new tin. The room aroma is as phenomenal as the tin aroma. It is comforting that I can actually enjoy a smoke when the situation warrants an aromatic. Highly recommended to both aromatic lovers and those English/VA smokers who are looking for that 'acceptably' aromatic tobacco to smoke around the impressionable young ladies in public. :)

There are many pipe smokers who 1) appreciate quality tobaccos and 2) really enjoy this blend. I like to think that I am in category 1, but I am definitely not in category 2. This tobacco is far too mild for my taste. When I finish a bowl, I don't feel as if I've smoked at all. More importantly, the flavoring- which to me tastes like plain M&Ms candy-is absolutely overwhelming, smothering whatever tobacco taste may be present. Even worse, the flavor does not change as you smoke; it's the same one-dimensional M&Ms taste the whole way down. Perhaps most damning is that the flavor stays in the pipe long after you've thrown or given away the stuff. Having said this, I might at least recommend this to a novice pipe smoker who has no previous experience smoking; the mildness may appeal to you, at least for a while....

This is another aromatic that I like a lot. This blend is composed of lighter Virginias and Black Cavendish, mostly in broken flake form, possibly necessitating some rubbing out, depending on your preference. It bears stating that the Black Cavendish in this blend is in the European fashion and not the (potentially) goopy, PG laden US variety. The tin aroma is good enough for me to want to stick a spoon in and eat it out of the can! (Dan describes the aromatic components as exotic fruit with bourbon vanilla.) Like Ashton’s Original Oldchurch, the base tobaccos here are of a very high quality, making this a unique aromatic. The taste is of a Virginia mixture with some hints of fruit and vanilla that don’t overwhelm the blend and which dissipate as you smoke farther down the bowl. The aroma in the room after smoking isn’t quite as concentrated as the tin aroma, with the natural tobacco smell being quite apparent.

Blue Note is another staple in my aromatic stable. The stuff comes from the tin bone dry, but that doesn't hurt it. The tin note is pure berry - not sure which kind, but I'd like to think it's blueberries.

It's a very interesting aromatic in that -like one of my favorite aromatics, Scotty's Trout Stream - the aromatic taste isn't overpowering my any means. However, where Trout Stream provides a thick, chewy, creamy smoke, Blue Note seems to give a sharper, dryer smoke. The berry flavoring comes in almost as an afterthought, with undertones of vanilla and bourbon.

It's overall quite an enjoyable smoke. However, there's something in the smoke itself that gives it that bit of sharpness. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I don't prefer it. You have to be in the right mood for this blend. But, if you're in that mood, it is a fine tobacco.

It had a very sweet taste about it but it was more like candy in a can than smoking tobacco.

My favorite aromatics today is Erik Stokkebye stuff, especially their 4th Generation Family Reserve & Bagpiper's Dream. If you are in the market for a highly flavored aromatic, treat yourself to some BN. Two thumbs up for an aromatic with plenty of sweet flavor!

Quality Virginias. Nice chunks of pressed flake. An "adult" aromatic I'd buy again. Not goopy but very sweet. Interesting fruity/vanilla casing. Great room note and nice smooth taste. The one draw back I encountered is that between the natural sugar in the Virginias, and the sugar in the casing, I had to nurse the bowls to avoid tongue bite or sting. As time went on and the casings weakened a bit from airing out, sting wasn't as much of a consideration. I bought this tin in September of 2014, then cracked it and started smoking in February of 2015. Here it is a year later and I have probably four or five bowls left. As you can conclude, I didn't smoke this blend very frequently which isn't to say I don't really enjoy it. I usually smoke English blend and enjoy aromatics now and then. Well worth trying.

The tin note of this baccy is simply outstanding; I just wish it translated a bit more in the taste department. It gave off gobs of aroma, just like Da Vinci, a very pleasant aroma at that (sure to be a crowd pleaser). There are a few downers, it burned hot, especially towards the bottom, and, because of this, it smoked really wet for me and left a horrid backwash. Still, the front end of the smoking experience was relatively pleasant. This is a true aromatic, let there be no doubt. I'm sure an aromatic smoker will find this blend delivers, however, for a piper such as me, maybe not so much.

I'll give this a grudging three stars. Aromatic smokers will likely enjoy this one.

Well - here is one i have been meaning to try for a long time. As a fan of the output from the record label of the same name, and someone that appreciates a good aromatic, what better pairing could there be? So, cue the melodic and soothing sounds of the Herbie Hancock quintet, and nearly 50 years after he set forth, I took my own Maiden Voyage with this highly recommended blend from Dan Tobacco, my first from their stable.

And it started so well. The pouch note was not at all overwhelming or too reminiscent of a chemists laboratory, and a single charring got things going in a very relaxing way. As we set forth, I had recollections of the half penny tray at the local sweet shop and the micro packets of refreshers that it used to be possible to buy in the UK. Moving along, and as Herbie and crew set forth into The Eye Of The Hurricane, I was navigating a more sedate course, although reviewing what was coming out of my funnel, I was at risk of soon entering a fog bank. As I pulled back, I took a look at the packaging and tried to work out why Dan decided to package 50g of tobacco in what looks like a 100g tin, certainly, it is not a Little One like the tin they use for their devils holiday tobacco. Any, it is at this point in the bowl where a tobaccos true colors start to show and it becomes a case of Survival Of The Fittest. Blue Note came through for me and as herbie played out, the Dolphins were indeed Dancing!!

I feel like aromatic tobaccos get a bad rap in reviews, and for the most part I agree with them. Torben Dansk - Blue Note I feel to be somewhat of an exception and I'll tell you why.

Most aromatics with a good dose of cavendish and a thick casing I would relate to candy. Lots of flavor, but no substance. Blue Note I would relate to cherry pie. Of course there will be a thick casing and added flavor, but there is some substance to it.

Granted, this is no strong navy blend or virginia flake that so many people go crazy for. But it does have a few things going for it.

Great room note - smoking during a break at work won't piss off your coworker or run off customers. Also, it is light enough to smoke everyday or have just a quick bowl before going home.

One recommendation, when you get a tin, open it up and loosen up the tobacco. Let is sit on the counter for an hour open and then close it. Wait a day or two and then start smoking. The tobacco comes quite moist and letting it dry out will keep the tongue bite away and keep the moisture out of your pipe.

Final word - It's still an aromatic, but it's better than most.

I bought my first tin of blue note over a year ago and still have most of it in my humidor. Not an everyday smoker so tins will last a while. The first thing that is noticeable about BN is that heavenly aroma. Like what has been said before over and over is it is similar to a bakery. There is also a fruitiness to it. One of the best I have ever put my nose to. BN comes moist out of the tin so air time is a must. It has taken most of a year to get it to dry to my liking. As with most aros this does bite but aging helps immensely! Take your time with it when its in the pipe. Slow smokers will benefit the most when it comes to BN. This aspect is the only reason this doesn't get more stars. This is definitely a crowd pleaser.

Blue note is one of my favorites. The tin never seems to last me long enough. Upon opening the tin, I find a pleasant blueberry smell, which reminds me right away of my mom's home made blueberry bread. Smoking it is just as enjoyable, to me the taste is of blueberry and cinnamon. The smoke has a wonderful aroma and friends always ask for a pinch. It stays lit well, I never find I need to relight a bowl. Even though it is a sweet blend, my bowls don't get messy or goopy. The smoke has a nice thickness to it, and even a bluish color. I have not been let down by this tobacco, or many of Dan Tobaccos other blends.

After perusing the range of reviews I decided I had to sample this blend. As everyone has said, the casing is quite strong. The vanilla was most noticeable to me, with a bit of citrus in the background.

I tend to smoke slowly, which keeps more of the flavoring in the taste of the smoke. With this method I found the flavoring very pleasant, with no bite, though a little wet. The room note was, as others have noted, equally nice. It's not going to floor you, but it's an easy smoke. All-in-all I would recommend this for those in the market for a softer aromatic.

After reading a couple of exceptional reviews of this tobacco and how amazing it was, what with its blend of Vas and black cavendish, I ordered a tin online about a year ago. I'm not certain that I have been more disappointed with a tobacco purchase.

The first major problem I had with this tobacco is just how present the casing truly was. This is a blend that advertises the presence of virginias for the sake of the virginias, but why are they important if the tobacco is so heavily cased that all I taste is chemicals, "bourbon" (that is, vanilla beans FROM bourbon, not bourbon whiskey) vanilla corn syrup, and berries?

The second major problem I had is just how incredibly uncooperative this tobacco truly was. I tried it fresh out of the tin, and it burned chemically hot and gave me the worst case of tongue bite I've had since I was brand new to this sort of thing. In fact, perhaps it was worse.

Okay, so I just opened the tin. I'll let it sit a bit, that will help, right? No... it still bites like a copperhead.

Fine. I'll air the tobacco out for a while, let it dry. Yet it still gurgled, hissed, popped, and bit angrily.

If I must, I will smoke a tobacco that doesn't taste like much. But if it won't cooperate with me under any circumstances whatsoever, you can darn well forget about it.

This does have a wonderful tin note and may smell like roses to the people around me, but it completely fails when it comes to taste, texture, & bite. I'm sorry folks, but I don't smoke a pipe for bystanders and in my experience most bystanders seem to fall into the "I don't care if you smoke or not" and "OMG CANCER!" (and I'm not sure that I blame them!) categories. There are those exceptions that like to smell smoke, I agree- but they may be fewer in number than they once are. I won't smoke a tobacco that gets a 10 out of 10 to a bystander when I could smoke a 8 out of 10 that I like.

Stick to your tobacconist's blends (Wilshire, or for goodness sakes even black russian), or perhaps one of the W.O. Larsen aromatics.

I found this blend to be similar to Solani's 131 Red Label blend in tin aroma & similar in taste with slightly more strength. Also nuances of Peterson's Sweet Killarney come to mind. This one is a true crowd pleaser for sure. Fairly comfortable on the palate for an aromatic, although not much of the enticing, sweet taste comes through while smoking.

The tin aroma is such that one might be enticed to find a spoon & dig right in. It leaves no goopy dottle in the bowl but it will leave a ghost in there for the next couple of rounds. I don't smoke many aromatics these days & this review is based only on the merits of an aromatic blend. Therefore, IMHO, Torben Dansk's aromatic Blue Note merits three stars.

Blue Note... Great aroma king, in fact the aroma is so full and rich I think it plays with your sense of taste, not sure which is which. The vanilla, tobacco topping idea is nothing new, it's just that BN does it so well. Similar to 7 seas gold, but richer. Easy to light and stays lit, with only a faint tongue tingle, it's easy to manage. For me this is a recliner blend, as inactivity will allow the smoker to appreciate the interesting changes that this stuff goes thru, from light up, to bowl bottom. After all, that's an important part of what makes this blend worth the asking price. Not necessarily my go to blend, but for what it is, 3 stars. Personal rating 2.5 / 5

I bought a tin that was several years old. I'd heard this was a nice aromatic. I popped it open to a aroma of whiskey soaked fruit cake. The paper in the tin had change color to a light brownish yellow...Nice sign of a bit of age.

The tobacco inside ranged in color from yellow to brown to black. Just the right amount of moisture was noted.

The tobacco packed well. After a charring light I re-lit and began to smoke the bowl. The flavor reminded me of an ice cream my grand child likes...Confetti Cake made by Schwans. The citrus and vanilla were the biggest players rounded out by the sweetness of the Virginia and Cavendish. The room note was good.

This was one of the first aeromatics I tried. From the tin it smells of strawberries and cream and has a nearly sickningly sweet aroma. It burns wet and has some trouble with lighting, unless you let it dry out for a while. The cavendish peaks in every now and then but the whole experience is dominated by the topping; which for me is a little over bearing.

It has a tendency to bite if rushed so be careful when you try this stuff. Oh, also make sure ytou use this in a pipe dedicated for aeromatics; it will ruin a pipe you use for your English blends. I will reluctantly recommend this to people who really enjoy aeromatics and don't like the taste of tobacco too much.

Wow! This is what an aromatic should be: a pleasant room note, a flavoring that doesn't overpower the tobacco, and a well-blended choice of leaves that compliment the topping. The tin and room notes are very strong and almost candy-like. In my opinion, this strength doesn't come through nearly as strong in terms of flavor to the smoker, but is still present. The topping comes off as sort of a berry liqueur, with a bit of coconut and vanilla as you progress through the bowl. Out of the tin, the tobacco comes fairly dry and at the right humidity for smoking. I haven't been able to get this to bite yet. Definitely too sweet for an all-day smoke, but I love it for sitting outside on a sunny day. The sidestream's ability to turn heads is a nice perk, too.

Also, I second the remark that the packaging looks like some sort of discount cleaning solution. CAO really ought to lend Dan the services of their package designer...

Blue Note is my first morning smoke, delightfully suitable to accompany an unsweetened cup of black coffee.

It is a true, cased aromatic, yet most competently and attentively tailored using -as many reviewers noticed- quality ingredients, and a fine quality tobacco leaf beneath the topping.

I cut the leaves into smaller pieces using a large scissor, and gently “gravity” fill my bowl. This blend seems to work better in a larger size pipe bowl. I smoke it in a straight large bowled Meerschaum and in a Peterson XL 315. Also results are increasingly improved after about 5 to 10 bowls, when a decent layer of “cake” has formed in the designated pipe, In my –albeit limited experience- I find these measures required to facilitate a consistent, easy burning smoke. In fact this blend calls for a patient, calm, pensive smoke, and if done accordingly it will reward tenfold. I find it FANTASTIC.

Many Aromatics I tried will leave behind an appetite inducing cake-baking-like scent, while burning your tongue with stabs of a diametrically opposite, repulsive taste. Blue Note is in a different class, and one I keenly recommend if you are attracted to aromatics but have been too often disappointed by their treacherous appearances concealing an "ugly witch”.

[a footnote of style: the name, “Blue note”, and the packaging label, with two lines of a red music score running over a blue background, are as distastefully cheap as a discount bathroom detergent. Perhaps, the blender did not believe in this Aromatic's success and afforded it a hurried graphic design. If so, poor foresight; it is indeed one of the most popular tobaccos on the market. As whimsical as it may sound, I store it in old Dunhill tins, much more elegant as they are, to forget the irritating nuisance of the original Blue Note packaging.]

Conclusion, I generally despise Aromatics, yet I Highly recommend this.

First 5-10 smokes were good, but nothing really spectacular; here I was willing to conclude my testing, but then… here I am not sure, is it the matter of the pipe, maybe some airing? I just recently tried this blend for the first time. I'm an English/Balkan, Virginia, VaPer, and VaBur smoker. Despite these eclectic tastes, aromatics figure really low on my list of baccy preferences, and I smoke only what I consider "quality" aromatics, such as Sillems Black and W.O. Larsen's Old Fashioned. But Blue Note is really blowing me away. I was a bit timid approaching it as I've read a lot about the sugar-kick cotton candy taste. But wow, what an enjoyable smoke! I do enjoy a mild easy smoke very often, so I think that must have helped me enjoy it more than I initially expected. That, and I have a sweet tooth. Usually, vanilla flavored aros just make me sick, but this one, with its vanilly milly talcum aroma is a drooler. Of course, YMMV. But that's my take and I'm sticking to it.

After smoking more of this I downgraded my recommendation to "Recommended". As I smoked more I noticed a bit more of a coconut smell, which I liked.

I smoked my first bowl of this while visiting in my local pipe shop. This tobacco was a little moist out of the box which matches up with what I like. Good "fruity" smell and taste upon lighting. I packed my first bowl a little too tighly and got a little bite - but that's not the tobacco's fault.

Good smooth aromatic smoke. Second and third bowl were even better. I don't have the actual stats on the nicotine content, but it seemed to be a little stronger than what I am normally used to. This tobacco generated a good, pleasant room scent and was smooth through the entire bowl.

Maybe a little too much sweetness compared to my normal MB smokes, but I will keep some of this around for morning and/or ocsassional smoke.

First off, let me say that I am a novice. Just bought my first pipe this week. I work downtown Chicago so I have the distinct pleasure of stopping by Iwan Ries almost anytime I like. I dropped in there and a very helpful staff member set me up with a pipe, pipe tool, cleaners, leather pouch, and suggested a few tobaccos to get me started. Dan's Blue Note was one of his suggestions when I told him I was looking for Aromatics that would not bother the wife. I think it was $12 for a 50g tin of Blue Note, which didn't bother me since that's pretty much the cost of a pack of smokes downtown- but the guy said everyone loves this stuff and they'd probably sell even more if it wasn't so pricey. I'm still breaking in my new pipe, and I should mention that at this early point in my piping career, I'm primarily an Aromatic guy (which seems to be common for beginners). I've smoked a few bowls of the Blue Note and I really enjoy it. It's my favorite tobacco thus far (for what that's worth). It won't bite, and if you set it out to dry for 15+ mins before smoking, it stays lit very well. I smoked it indoors at my buddy's place and everyone there enjoyed the room note. Sweet and enjoyable, I'll definitely be buying more. Oh and upon smelling the freshly opened tin, my wife declared- "it smells like raisins" but she says that about every tin. If you like aro's, this one should not be missed. If you despise aro's, well then why the hell are you reading this review? I gave it 3 out of 4 stars only because there is no 3.5 star rating.

UPDATE: this is a heavily flavored aromatic. Berries and vanilla. Smells FANTASTIC, and tastes almost as good as it smells. It will ghost your pipe so be careful what you smoke it in. My favorite example of a fruity aro. I've heard it actually ages very well due to the VA within - even though most aromatics don't gain much from aging.

Tin aroma is alluring and is as stated in the Tin Description. It reminded me of a quality, homebaked fruitcake. I like any good tobacco blend, including quality aromatics and this is an exceptional aromatic blend. "The Germans always make good stuff." Drying out a little works best for me & a bit of rubbing out is required as there are pieces of flake mixed in with the loose stuff. It burns cool with no tongue/palate discomfort. It burned about as good as any non aromatic and I didn't experience the goopy dottle that some have attested to. BN immediately became one of my favorite, flavored aromatics along with Solani's 131 Red Label and Peterson's Sweet Killarney. If you are in the market for a quality, flavored aromatic, treat yourself to some BN. "Two thumbs up," as it were. Therefore, my rating, based only on the character of a flavored blend, Blue Note merits four **s!

A great aromatic blend for the fledgling pipesmoker. It is a popular, readily available blend from most tobacconists, and there's a reason for that; it's good. It is one of the few blends that actually tastes like it smells. I enjoy good flavored aromatics and this one fits the bill. One of the bros on this site made a very good observation which poses my question; Why are non aromatic smokers even reviewing aromatics? So what if it smokes a little wet? So what if it leaves a little syrup or "goop" after the smoke? That's what pipe cleaners are for. I guess I wont go to the gym anymore, since I have to shower afterward. And i'll stop going to the gun range 'cause I have to clean the firearm afterwards. Oh and I'll stop having sex with delicious women, since I have to clean up all the wet goop afterwards. Smoke what you like bowlbrothers and take care of your pipes.

Since the beginning of my pipesmoking tenure, I have fallen away from a preference of aromatics, but I guess we all look for something different now and then. I decided to purchase some aromatic blends that are popular with the guys on the board. Blue Note is very pleasing to me. In the hot GA summer months, some of my favorite blends, just don't mix with the 90+ degree temps we have. Tin note on this blend is pleasant and slightly fruity. The vanilla is not too prominent. Sweetness abounds once you put it to flame. I'm smoking this blend in a xl315 peterson, and will probably just dedicate the pipe to it. This is a dessert tobacco for sure. Very fruity, I'm thinking of caraemilzed peach and cherry. A touch of vanilla mellows any acidity associated with fruit essences. I love it with earl grey tea. Like all aromatics a slow smooth smoking technique is used. No wet gurgle to speak of when smaoked in this manner. No tounge bite eaither. Very pleasant to bistandards, yet the pleasure is all for the smoker. I thought that aromatics were for a different breed of smaoker that I would never relate to but, I have to say that this one is making me rethink all that I once believed. I love it, and will be trying alot of other blends that I put away in the past. I can't wait to try Devil's Holiday and some others. I believe that I was prejudice against aromatics because I just didn't know how to properly smoke them, in the earlier years of pipe smoking. Will definately be buying more.

I have smoked it in bulk and from the tin, and it CAN cause a gurgle...but not too much so that I would refrain from enjoying this pleasant, "dessert" tobacco once in a while!

Blue Note is what every aromatic should strive to be. It is made from the finest tobaccos and flavored with great care. It is in a class of its own. The room note is fantastic and the flavor is of both tobacco and a hint of what to me is vanilla icing. Recommended for those who like the taste of tobacco and need a good room note when in mixed company. Buy a tin and give it a go even if you are not inclined to smoke aromatics it is that good.

A very lite and flavorful tobacco. The opened tin smells like fruit and nuts, very nice. I have gone through a few tins, some are more moist than others. I like mine dried a bit more. It smokes well, with a very lite fruit and nutty hints. I think this is perfect for a new pipe smoker who does not want to start with something too harsh. I also like to experiment and mix this with other tobacco.

Blue Note has become one of my favorite blends. It has a berry and vanilla taste with a touch of nutty background. I find it has a pleasant room note, and easy on the pallet. It does need to be smoked cool however and will bite if smoked hot but not harshly. It does tend to dry the mouth out a touch also. I highly recommend this blend for aromatic smokers that prefer a sweet but not too sweet smoke.

This is an aromatic for the aromatic lover! It is a very high quality virginia/cavendish blend that is good looking in the tin. The aroma upon opening the tin is very, very pleasant. I almost felt as if I were in the islands.

I tend to smoke crossover blends. And have gotten away from pure aromatics. This came highly recommended, so I gave it a try.

I found this blend to be mild in strength, and very pleasing with regards to room note. The flavors were that of coconuts, rum and vanilla with undertones of a nonspecific spice. The aftertaste is pleasant, and the burn is clean with no gloop left in the bowl. I really like this blend, but need a bit more substance to be truely satisfied. Perhaps a touch of oriental, or latakia would add complexity and make this blend sing for me.

That being said, I would recommend this blend for the true aromatic smoker, and will probably keep a tin of it around for a nice lighter change of pace.

Having heard a lot about this, I decided to try it and was not disappointed. In the tin it smells like fruit cake. I thought, oh-oh, another gloopy aromatic. But not at all; it smokes cool and dry (I didn't detect any burn), mildly sweet at first turning to a slightly saltier, more biscuity taste toward the end. Not much nicotine or tobacco taste, but that's a plus in some ways. It would be a good tobacco for beginners or those who like Shisha pipes. Roomnote is fantastic; married men beware, it will gravitate women towards you at parties...

Flavor: Not a lot of flavor. The tobacco flavor comes trhough but it's too mild.

Complexity: None. Pretty one dimensional.

Aroma: Pleasant at first. After a few bowls it's pretty easy to tell it's all chemical.

Tin Aroma: A bit sweet for my taste but not bad. Smells a lot better than it smokes.

Room Note: One of the best. Pretty heavy with vanilla and doesn't smell like cheap perfume.

Burning characteristics: burns good with few relights. Can be hot and bitey if tempted. If you smoke too fast it'll gurgle and leave some junk at the bottom of your pipe.

Cut/Moisture content: Loose cut. Moisture content is good, not too wet not too dry. Pretty good for a cased aromatic.

Overall: Not bad for an aromatic but not something I'd buy again. The tobacco used is of quality and the topping, although too strong for my taste, isn't overpowering. However, there is very little tobacco flavor which is a turn off for me. I'd recommend it for the aromatic lover who wants to move away from the drug store aromatic and get something better crafted.

When I first started into tinned tobaccos this was my first one back in 2002. I recently purchased a new tin, and found that it was more wet than usual. A little drying made it all worthwhile. While I am now a predominant English blend smoker, I can still go for a soothing moderately sweet bowl of this. The casing is there, but it is perhaps one of the mildest I have encountered in flavored aromatics. The tobacco really does speak for itself in the mixture with the casing like icing on the cake. The only key is to savor the puff and not train along or you will encounter some bite, but a relatively mild one. All I can say is, if you want desert after a good meal (like an English blend) this is it.

With a room note like this tobacco how could you go wrong? Well to start the tobacco is very wet, which should not be a problem just dry it out right? Well if you do that the flavor goes from strong to almost non-existent, and the tobacco on its own is not good enough to justify smoking. Depending on how dry the tobacco gets, it is either a VERY sweet (vanilla and strawberries) or just plain flat. The tobacco does smoke a bit hot and if not taken care of, will either burn your tongue or have trouble keeping lit. The only way to "enjoy this blend is to smoke it in a cob, then you do not have to worry about the wet stick stuff in your fine briar. Be warned try this stuff in private and decide if you like it. This is my new favorite aromatic! I love the combination of the Black Cavendish and the Virginias. The taste is that of vanilla-nutty goodness.I give this a 4.0 out of 4.0. Yes, it is that good.

Tobacco is very wet but even so it lit and stayed lit very well.

1/3 of the bowl is very sweet, almost to much but I like things in excess. Got a huge hint of vanilla and Bourbon.

2/3 bowl was very sweet but died down a lot, the Virginia's were coming through, finally.

the end of the bowl is a bit burnt so I will update it when I can describe it better.

This will be for special occasions only, it is just a treat that I can only savor for the best of times. Merry Christmas to me!

There are two types of aromatics for me: 1.Taste like tobacco but give a sweet smell that I use for company, only. 2.This aromatic that tastes and smells the same. A+

The moisture level was perfect and lit up well. Immediately, I felt like I was eating one of the best heavy deserts I have ever eaten. Immediately, I could taste the special heavy vanilla flavor. It was like a very unique sweet bourbon vanilla with a rum note in the background. The taste remained the same down to the very end. The aftertaste of this blend is very pleasing. The flavor is all over the board on this one but very pleasing indeed. The best way to describe this blend is like having sweetness dance all over your tongue! Never burned hot but made me wanting to load another bowl. Like I said, it?s like eating the best desert you have ever eaten.

So many have chimed in this one, and with such extremely different views, that I will make my assessment brief. Although this stuff smells/tastes wonderfully sweet and is made of high quality tobacco, the casings fade away faster than any other aromatic that I have tried. I have found it is vital that this blend be stored in an air-tight container, even if you plan to enjoy it pretty quickly. Otherwise, you risk being left with little in way of taste (which comes almost exclusively from casings). There is very little nicotine in this stuff (which can be good or bad depending on your style) and it can REALLY bite if smoked too quickly. The casing tend to really fade to the background toward the last third of the bowl, so I tend to not to finish it.

With all these caveats, Blue Note is a MUST-TRY for all who enjoy aromatics as I find it unlike any others. I always have some of this around for when I am in the mood for a super-sweet tobacco.

As a new pipe smoker, I bought a tin of Dan's Blue Note at a tobacco store while on vacation. I could remember reading about this blend a year ago hen I tried the pipe and gave it up but could not remember what I read. I bought the tin thinking it was highly recommended.

When we returned to camp, I anxiously opened the tin to discover a very sweet aroma. I filled a bowl and suffered through a nasty, tongue biting smoke. When we got home, I realized this blend has MIXED reviews, so I let a bowl sit out in a stainless steel bowl for 8 or 9 hours to try it again.

Wow, once it dried, it was a very sweet smoke. I had a few relights, but no different than the Virginia I smoke daily. It really is "cotton candy" in a briar. Having a sweet tooth, I kind of fell in love with the blend. I'm sitting here now with the tin open and enjoying the aroma. I should let the entire tin dry for a day so I can enjoy it without preparation, but just haven't got that far yet!

Enjoy, SUMO

Update: I forgot to mention that no matter what size bowl I smoke this out of, I get a dry smoke with no dottle. Did I say I love this stuff?

I purchased a tin of Blue Note in my search for that perfect aromatic. Perhaps there is no "perfect blend", but this comes very close. A drug store tobac it is not. The contents are of high quality ingredients. I enjoyed it so much that I started buying it in the 8 oz. bag.

I am not quite sure why there are complaints about the moisture content because I have not had such problems. If I did purchase a tobac that was too moist, I simply let it dry a little before smoking it. I would rather it be too moist than too dry and crumbly. Makes sense to me.

As far as Blue Note smoking too hot, I have had absolutely no problems. I have smoked this all day long with no ill effects.

I love the fruity taste myself and can taste the tobacco underneath the casing. I have not received any complaints about the aroma. Even my next door non-smoking neighbor complimented me on the smell. Definately a crowd pleaser.

Blue note has stiff competition with other aromatics in my rotation that smoke better, taste better, and are more economical.

I'm not a big fan of fruity type flavors in my tobacco - even in an aromatic, and this one is fruity, but I'm not basing my overall review on that bias.

The blend is extremely sweet which only aggravates the intensely shrill high notes from the sour fruit flavor and tangy Virginias. There are no real bass notes to balance it out. It will bite easily which is a real downer for any aromatic - when I reach for a aromatic I'm looking for a comfort smoke that requires no concentration.

Blue Note just doesn't deliver. I can understand why some like it, but it isn't my idea of a good aromatic or blend in general.

Being on a crusade to find the sweetest tobaccos made I only have one phrase that comes to mind: oh hell yeah!

Upon opening Blue Note, you are hit, no, flogged with a mixture of fruit and vanilla scents. (If you don't like aromatics this is your cue to close the tin and mail it to me instead of throwing it out!) The tobacco is ribbon cut and packs easily. My tin also had the right amount of moisture.

The light... Putting a match to Blue Note yields a different experience than one would expect. Immediately you're hit with a hot, biting smoke as you puff to get it going. It took me a while until I learned exactly how to smoke this stuff, but when I finally did (slow and deliberate is the key) it rewarded me with a very sweet flavor. Yes, Pipestud mentioned the taste of cotton candy and he isn't far off the mark. This is vaporized cotton candy!

So, if you're on a quest to find the sweetest, most nauseatingly sugary tobaccos out there like I am, capture this one and put it on your trophy stand. It's quite a specimen.

Blue Note, from Dan Tobacco, is a terrific blend for non-smokers in that the room note is extremely pleasing. If you smoke for your own pleasure, however, and not for others (I am being cheeky), this is a blend that will have to pass like a cricket ball into the wicket. Indeed, I cannot sing praises for Blue Note. My wife, however, commented on its pleasant tropical coconut odour; I gagged through the puffs--a real turn of the tables. Fortunately, the flavour is not stuck on my palate or in my pipe (after a thorough cleaning of the latter). As I am not a dedicated aromatic smoker (I try one every now and then on a whim), I am giving this two stars rather than one to be fair to those who are aromatic smokers as I gather they will like Blue Note immensely. A lot of people have remarked that the tin smells lovely. Personally, I find it rather obnoxious and somehow reminiscent of eating too much cotton candy and getting sick. The "wife rating" is P/T because I generally smoke outside and therefore can't smell it on myself. The best compliment I've received is that it's "better than cigarettes, that's for sure." Not bad for the money, and worth a shot. I'd judge this, while not my personal favorite, likely to be somebody's.

The first light is nice and pleasant. Lots of the casing flavor but not too much tobacco flavor. This continues for the first half of the bowl and becomes somewhat annoying. At the halfway point the casing burns off and I'm left with..well..what am I left with? Pretty much nothing. I find the casing pleasant enough if you're in the mood for something sickly sweet but the tobacco blend is either fouled by the casing or just can't stand on it's own. It never develops into anything worthwhile. This blend does nothing for me and I don't plan on trying it again.
