Sutliff Tobacco Company Match Late Evening

(2.74)
This is a match to Dunhill "Nightcap". This is a robust latakia based blend, enhanced by matured Virginias, exotic Turkish and a touch of perique for a robust body, a hint of spice and a deep, mellow sweetness.
Notes: Formerly known as Match Dunhill Nightcap.

The original and the Match (which was based on the Murrays’ version) have the same grassy, citrusy Virginia in equal amount, thus having the same effect. That is also true of the Oriental/Turkish and the perique. The former is lightly floral, leathery, musty, dry and woody and just rises above being a condiment. The lightly spicy, rather plumy perique is a background player. In looking at both tobaccos, I can not tell one from the other. The only difference I notice is that the latakia in the original is a little stronger in taste in all ways: Cyprian sweetness, smokiness and wood. At times during a smoke, the Match seemed nearly identical to the original, and other times not so much. The depth of the attributes of the latakia - not the amount of latakia - is the only variable. Stirring up the tobacco in the Match produced better results for me, but did not completely solve the problem. The strength level of this blend is almost medium. Has a mild nic-hit, and won't bite or get harsh. Both burn clean and cool at a moderate pace with a consistent flavor. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and needs an average number of relights. Has a pleasant, smoky after taste, and stronger room note. Not quite an all day smoke, though it is certainly repeatable. I gave four stars to the original.

I picked up a pouch of this at a pipe show and gave it a try. Nightcap is my favourite blend. The first time I smoked it I was unimpressed. I then smoked a pipe of the original and a pipe of the match to see if I could taste the difference. They were surprisingly close in every way. Now I believe this is probably the best economical replacement out there. I would highly recommend this tobacco. Its not the exact match but it's pretty damn close.

Sutliff Tobacco Co. - Match Dunhill's Nightcap.

Ironically, I loved the original Nightcap as a morning smoke! So, I felt despondence when it was discontinued. But, although a little different, I find this a good smoke.

The cut differs, quite profoundly. Nightcap, the original, was made of well rubbed ribbons, whereas this is a coarse cut. Being from bulk the loose pouch has eradicated any problem concerning sealed-in moisture; the hydration's great. The aroma suggests a fuller tasting English.

The smoke? Flavoursome and lovely! It lights easily, generating quite a heavy smoke, of a cool temperature. The burn requires very little maintenance. Now, the taste: as expected, it isn't a smoky Lat-Bomb. The Latakia gives wood, depth, but doesn't hog the flavour with a sharp, intense, smokiness. It goes perfectly with the rich Orientals; these give the smoke a buttery, creaminess. The Virginia gives body, but I struggle to detect any sharp, grassy notes. The Perique is constantly present. I don't get much 'spice', but I get a DEFINITE rich, fruitiness, from it.

Nicotine: nowhere near as strong as the original. Room-note: not nice.

Match Dunhill's Nightcap? Although not an exact 'match', I'll still, happily, recommend it:

Three stars.

This is no way near the original Dunhill Nightcap in both taste and strength. To me, this is a mild aromatic blend with its own strength and weaknesses.

Pre-lighting, the aroma is very pleasant. It reminds me of roasted nuts with a light hint of vanilla and caramel. Mind you this is not as bad as it sounds.

The sample that I received was perfectly humidified. It packed well and required no re-lighting as it just kept on going, and going, and going, until it burned itself out. It has a very light aromatic bouquet with very pleasant taste.

Trying to be as objective as possible, as a tobacco, this can hold its own. The only drawback is its strength which tends to be more on the mild side in comparison to the original Dunhill Nightcap, at least in this humble smoker's opinion.

For smokers who do not like a strong aromatic smoke, this might be a fit. Best way is to try it. Overall, I would RECOMMEND this.

Recd this....stuff with my first quality baccy purchase of....wait for it-Orlik Golden Sliced. My wife made the purchase on my behalf, and the cigar shop "threw in a pouch" of this impersonator, as he was just started carrying Sutliffe as his first line. Not positive but I think Sutliffe might be manufactured through Altadis....which would make perfect sense ( shop ended up selling those tins at 2 for 1 just to clear off that dusty shelf). Do not waste money on this or any other "match" in this line-I recd if for free and I wouldn't forward it to anyone else. It's that bad. The cat who said it was great only has reviews on the Altadis Dunhill Match blends, therefore hasn't a 'pot to pee in' so to speak.

The one positive that became of that experience is that I got the same shop owner to carry the real deal, so I got to try Nightcap and EMP very early in my pipe smoking experience-setting the bar for future tobacco purchases.

I really like this blend. I have NOT tried the real thing but I love the tin note and powerful room note. This is an outdoor smoke IMHO. Light it once and forget it. It reminds me of musty canvas tents and leather tack. Both fond memory smells for me.

I have been smoking this for the past few days and really like it for what it is. Any match blend I do not expect it to be an exact clone. I have noticed though that a lot of Sutliff’s blends are course cut. The Dunhill has a fine ribbon cut. The tin note on the match smelt a little sweeter and to me a little less perique. I did smoke some original nightcap and then smoked a bowl of this side by side. This blend is similar to the original. I might take a few bowlfuls of this and add a little more perique to it. On its own I find this a nice pleasant blend, smooth tasting and could be smoked all day if you wanted to.

I really like this blend. It has all the good aspects a nice English blend needs to have. Virginias, orientals and latakia leaf are all there. The smokiness is there and the blend is not wet nor too dry. It exudes the typical campfire smell and has the great rich taste we all expect from a blend that carries these kind of leaves. I cannot compare it to Nightcap though. Nigthcap is notably stronger - I cannot feel the perique in this match... On Nightcap you can't be mistaken it is there. Flavour profile of Nightcap is also more in your face. Resuming - this is a nice blend, mechanically competent burn from top to botto of the bowl, nice taste and aroma, no goop, satisfying. No fuss here... Is it like Nightcap? Nope, it is not.

I did not know this was made by Sutliff, which bad experiences taught me to avoid, but is likely the culprit whom makes a few things I do enjoy and was simply unaware of. The real question is of course, is this similar to Dunhill's Nightcap? Well it has been a few years since I've had it, and I am unwilling to crack my last cellared tin, so lets hope the holes in my memory are not too wide.

The contents certainly has more twigs than the original, so quality 'control' is not up to speed. The oriental and the raw charcoal note is tamer, yet not too far of the mark. The lit product is lighter and sweeter (not sugary, but if you can imagine the bloody taste of a steak that's savory, that eventually leaves a sweet finish). The total effect was certainly English and flavorful in its own right, but milder in nicotine and strength (though my buds may have leathered over time).

I'm glad this Match product exists to dampen the pain of Dunhill closing production. I could see giving this 3 stars, but felt it would be in poor form since that is the rating I gave to the better original. If you never had the original, don't fret - you are not missing all that much, so pack your pipe with pride.
