Paul Olsen Sirius
(3.00)
This blend is composed of medium Virginia flake, ready rubbed and stored while under pressure, which burns slowly. Basic tobacco has been blended with a little vanilla and a touch of almonds. This gives Sirius a very light and sweet flavor.
Notes: Blend made for HRH Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark when he joined the Sirius Patrol in 2000.

For a change a tobacco with a scent, not a scent packed in a tobacco tin! Good quality leaf with a topping of vanilla and almond/amaretto. I'm sure it can please an aromatic as well as a straight tobacco smoker. There is some nicotine and quite some tobacco taste, doesn't feel like the usual hot air of aromatic concoctions. A solution when one needs a good room note and still a smoke!

My Sirius tin is about 8 years old and does not look at all like the photo here. Mine is a small, rectangular tin and the leaf was almost spun cut rather than ready rubbed. I did detect a little added Danish flavoring, but it played in the background to the Burley/Virginia presentation.
Not a strong tobacco at all and the Virginia element was somewhat grassy and did not present much depth. The Burley does come through, but only in the background. A nice fun change of pace but not a tobacco I personally will pursue in the future.

Paul Olsen- My Own Blend Sirius.
The smell from my 25 gram tin is spectacular. There's a good almond and vanilla note but also a decent tobacco smell. It doesn't smell too aromatic but it has a rich/deep fragrance that's only been embellished by the additives.
My tobacco's slightly moist directly from the freshly opened tin; still smokeable but a short airing is a definite benefit.
I'd class it to be more of a course cut than your standard ready rubbed as it contains a few small broken flakes and chunkier pieces.
Personally, I think the flavour of the smoke is good. The aromatic side is of a brilliant weight to allow some of the tobacco tastes to gain recognition. With these I think the Burley outweighs the Virginia.
When I first light the bowl the vanilla is definitely present, only after about half the bowl it calms down a fair bit and it becomes a far more nutty smoke.
The burn is pretty slow, even and consistent for the whole bowl. Giving a mid' temperature smoke with a medium nicotine amount.
The only negative is tongue bite. It doesn't give me too painful a kick but after a short while I do notice it bites a little unless I sip it slowly.
All in all I think this is a good smoke. It would get full marks if it weren't for the bite!
