Sweet red and bright Virginias, fragrant Orientals, a bit of rich Cyprus latakia, and just a pinch of perique. The leaf is blended in layers, briefly pressed, then sliced and tumbled into ribbons. Lively and engaging, with a subtle fruitiness, and an elegant, creamy texture, it's a great bowl to accompany the morning cup.
Notes: Chelsea Morning was introduced in October, 2009.

A delightful combination of tobaccos that work to perfection! Chelsea Morning is one of those rare blends that is not too strong yet pours waves of flavor over the palate. The tin note is that of stewed prunes and slight hints of Latakia. At the match the leaf delivers volumes of thick, rich and creamy smoke and stays lit well.
I want to say that Chelsea Morning was a bit like smoking Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe with an added Perique taste, but frankly, this one is stronger in taste. Near the bottom of the bowl the Perique is more evident.
I can see where this one will be enjoyed by the masses with few detractors. It simply has a little something in it for everyone (well, almost everyone).

This blend has the distinction of being the finest pipe tobacco blend to miss my rotation, an "honor" once reserved for GLP Abingdon. They both qualify for essentially the same reasons.
After falling heavily for the other two blends in this series, I decided to give this one a spin. This one has twice the complexity of the other two combined. Not just in one bowl but from bowl to bowl, this one showed many different faces. If there are any pipesmokers that listen to a lot of Iannis Xenakis' music (besides myself), you'll understand the complexity factor. And yet a lot of it seemed randon, like it showed whatever face it felt like at the times it felt like showing it. As a result, this is one of more intriguing blends I've ever smoked, the same as with Abingdon. Smokers of heavy latakia blends should try that one, just as those who favor a lighter hand should absolutely try this one. This one is everything that Dunhill EMP promised but failed to deliver. IMHO, this blend fills the "early morning" niche ten times better than the venerable Dunhill. No limp wrists here.
So why did this not make my rotation? Well, whereas I can't give this one enough respect as what I refer to as a "genius blend", my heart overrules my head in matters of subjectivity such as taste. I simply didn't find enough punch to this one. It should be noted that I rarely smoke before noon. By that time, Quiet Nights is calling - or Meridian. But if those two are too much for you and you prefer a milder taste but still fulfilling, and you enjoy complexity to the Nth degree, you absolutely HAVE to smoke this. It's a must. Instead of Dark Lord, I'm going to refer to Greg Pease as the Thinking Man's Blender. His blends are often puzzling, sometimes confounding, but all of them are worth a serious audition. The rewards will be plentiful.

The red Virginia provides tangy dark fruit, wood and earth with a light breadiness as the lead component. The bright Virginias are grassy with a touch of tart and tangy citrus as a supporting player. The Cyprian Latakia is smoky, woody, earthy, slightly musty, sweet, but is a minor player. The earthy perique is also a minor ingredient, being more raisiny and plumy than spicy. The Oriental/Turkish are floral, woody, earthy, herbal, vegetative, slightly sweet and more sour, indicating that Izmir is one of the tobaccos, and are noticeable in every puff, sometimes dominating the other components. It's more of a dry than sweet smoke with a little creaminess, but there's a few harsh spots here and there after the half way point. Has a slightly more than mild nic-hit. The strength is just past the center of mild to medium, while the taste is medium. Won't bite, but has a few rough edges. Burns clean and slow with some necessary relights, and leaves a little moisture in the bowl. Has a little inconsistency in flavor. Has a decent, short lived after taste and stronger room note. Almost an all day smoke. More of a two and a half star blend, mainly because the individual tobaccos don't seem work together as well as they should. Some reviewers suggest it improves with age, but my observations are from a freshly opened tin.

Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe was my go to morning bowl. Was. Now Chelsea Morning fills that place on the roster. This tobacco is perfect for starting the day. It has notes of mild spice and a wonderful creamy smoke. About midway through the bowl, a toasty nuttiness emerges and completely compliments a nice hot cup of coffee.
This tobacco is best enjoyed by smoking it slowly. This blend is made for lazy morings. I am just thankful that I have a long commute so I can fully appreciate the nuances of this blend.

G. L. Pease - Chelsea Morning. Every so often I'll open a tin or pouch of tobacco and it will leave feeling me pretty much incredulous at its brilliance! That's the exact situation here; it took me only one puff to realise the eminence of this blend! To give more detail, I'll start at the beginning:
As I've said before, I often find the terms used to describe tobacco can be a touch misleading, the main culprits being ribbon and broken flake. To me, this falls just below being a broken flake; the tobacco has all been broken so there's no big pieces of flake in there but it's still a lot coarser than many ribbon cut blends. To me, the un-lit aroma seems pretty mellow. I can identify a very subtle plum note and maybe a slight smokiness but other than those I don't find it to be at all potent. Moisture, ahh, the moisture; absolutely PERFECT. This means I can fill and smoke immediately; that brings me nicely onto part two, the smoke!
This lights superbly; I just use a quick touch from my normal flame lighter, a jet flame would be completely superfluous. Then it gives a great and steady burn. The flavour blows my mind. It has to be one of the most perfectly rounded blends I've had. I don't find that the Latakia hogs the playing field at all. It gives a pleasing cedar/wood note but it doesn't make any other taste redundant with it's smokiness. The way the Perique has been included is interesting. I feel it's used more like a garnish, it just picks the smoke up a bit with zing! The texture of the smoke is beautiful. It's very smooth, thick, and creamy. The pleasure is embellished by a cool temperature and zero tongue bite. The nicotine amount is about medium, for a morning smoke I think some folks would prefer something a little more formidable in the N department!
I can't sing the praises of this remarkable blend high enough. The smoking qualities are impeccable from Chelsea morning. Perfectly rounded, cool, and creamy. Highly recommended.
Four stars.

A mixture that could be smoked all day, an English that borders on the "Balkan" as the Orientals are very present. I like the creamy, slightly sweet and sour notes that are accompanied by a woodsy taste. The Perique picks up as the bowl progresses with more peppery accents. Overall a symphony of flavors, that is never in your face and never dull either.

The first time I tried Chelsea Morning I was outdoors and it was windy, and I was in an agitated state of mind. I puffed way too hard and wrecked my mouth in short order, wound up clearing my throbbing palate with a bowl of Astley's 109! My next experience with the CM was much better, and the more I've smoked it since, the better I like it. If I have the time, this stuff really scratches my tobacco itch.
IMO, CM might be a natural choice for medium English smokers curious about the "GLP Mystique". CM almost fits an English profile, after all, to which it tastefully adds a few GLP bells and whistles. The deep-but-still-piquant tin note tells a lot, since the smoke follows suit, except the Latakia, although prominent in the tin, fades softly (but never departs) behind the Orientals and the Perique when CM is smoked, while the VAs run the show. I prefer to dry CM just a little, to best realize its complexity. It handles, loads, lights and burns down without fuss or bother. If one takes one's time, there are overtones galore, and a few undertones, as well. Subtle incense and exotic spices abound, but never at the cost of the first quality tobaccos. The range of VAs is perfect for this blend, providing and enhancing both the upper and the lower "registers" and making just the right balance of sweet, sour and spicy from the lot. The Orientals are slightly mossy/musty, and their spices are well-melded with those from the Perique, which also adds some fig. The Lat is simple and simply tasty. Though it's rather subdued, it's always present, and I would not discount its presence. The soft, lingering aftertaste is aftermath, only sweeter. Pushed, CM can bite, for sure, so don't push it. All the same, with practice it is possible to summon more flavor with longer pulls without penalty. Strength is medium, and flavors can range from medium toward full. I like the room note quite a lot, but YMMV, due to substantial Perique.
All considered, there are plenty of good reasons why so many (including moi) have named Chelsea Morning as a favorite.
Update, 11-16-15: I've lately been smoking CM from a tin dated 01-2015. It was very dry in the tin, with the color and consistency of ground particle board. Although the appearance is off-putting, it smokes and tastes fine, albeit it's not the same as earlier production, being less fruity, with fewer low notes. Oh well, plus ca change...

Chelsea Morning is a great offering in the Old London Series! The tobacco is mostly of medium brown colour with some darker shades. It's definitively more of a broken/partially rubbed-out flake than a Ribbon cut. The tin note is very much the spiciness from the Orientals and hayness from the Virginias. It also has an underlying, deep earthy aroma that is very nice. The tobacco came to ideal moistness (just a tiny bit dry but still has some moisture). Breaking up the flakes is easy and so is the lighting up. Right from the start, Chelsea Morning is rich, earthy, spicy, and has an occasional smokiness from the Latakia and is very creamy. There could be, yes, something akin to a fruitiness developing past the half point. But it's always subtle. This tobacco burns beautifully, is extremely well balanced and is a true pleasure to smoke, and not only in the morning. Chelsea Morning is an outstanding Or/Va dominant blend, packs some good Vitamin N and I highly recommend it. I believe that Greg Pease has reached a unprecedented blending maturity in the release of the Old London series; which is, by far, my favorites offerings from this very talented blender.

In the interest of full disclosure: I am in general am a fan of GL Pease, and his blends, and I was very excited for this new series, but I can honestly say, this blend is a true marvel. It exceeded my expectations, and showed me new things to be excited over that I hadn't even considered. I will do my best to quantify my reasons for such praise.
The aroma upon opening the tin, I think, is an experience very familiar to humans, but somewhat alien to pipe smokers. It has the character, and presents to the senses as food, more than construction. The familiar tobacco scents are indeed the components of the aroma, but, not in their usual voices. They are more unified and conformed than when they usually speak. Much like a stew, it no longer smells like each ingredients, though they are its composition, it smells like stew. That said, this is a delicious smelling stew of tobacco. It's almost shocking at first. Its savory, peppery, and a little sweet. The moisture level really worked for me, and i didn't need to let it air out at all.
The next thing you'll notice is the cut. It presents in long even strips that link, and fold in a way that really packs easily, and seems to facilitate a constant, and even burn. I am happy to report that Chelsea Morning gave me my first ever "one light burns to ash at the heel" experience. It just puffed on and on, with no threat of overheating, biting, or smoldering out.
I think perhaps that both the special type of aroma and cut are due to the new process. I hate to assume, or suppose on these matters on which i am uninitiated, but I suspect the new process unified the cut, flavors, and aromas so that they harmonize the way they do-which is in a way I have never experienced in tobacciana.
And once you light this new strange friend, you see, taste, and smell the effect of those new presentations of form. Many blends have the feeling of an orchestra, or a large festival chorus. You get a large number of people for the large sound, and add as many altos as you need to have them heard with the sopranos, and after tinkering with the numbers, you have a big, full chorus, with a big four-part sound. This blend is like the smaller Hilliard Ensemble singing Renaissance motets. The voices are so tuned with each other, so unified that their voices blend like the sound of one instrument, singing chords so tightly tuned you can not hear the individual voices, only let the tones blanket over you in their perfect weave. Its as though the Latakia "listens" to the Virginia and adjusted its volume to bring out the frequency marriage to make their harmony really zing. The perique hears the lower tones of the orientals and sings with a covered tone as to not clang against it, but stay in the pocket and make the chord grind, and thrill.
The taste? Well, it is hard to describe really in concrete terms. It's buttery, and nutty, and zesty...and also not. It is what it is. It doesn't taste "like" anything, to me. It is almost as if its separate properties have their own characteristics. Its taste is wet, but its mouth-feel is dry. I'd say, maybe dried figs, and citrus come to mind. But, truly, it has a taste all its own. This blend will "bowl you over" (wink) not with its tidal wave of taste, as it was not intended to, but rather with its ontology. You will marvel at its very nature of being, and at the success of its incarnation. The taste itself is perfectly pleasing, surprising, and a truly delicious breakfast.
Everyone reacts differently to new things, and I think this is no exception. I have always been something of a smoking omnivore. I smoked cigarettes for years, then moved on to cigars, and then added pipes. This is a blend that reaches across all those smokes, and takes their best parts, and sings a whole new fusion. It has a piece of all of them, the slighter, and slimmer taste character of a cigarette (a stretch of a comparison-it doesn't taste LIKE a cigarette); the consistent draw and burn of a cigar, and the variable volume draw, developed flavor and savory plot line of a artisan pipe full.
So, I could imagine there there might be some who have no long-term use for this blend, as they will miss its finer points-much in the same way I can imagine that a Metallica roadie might not enjoy Palestrina. The types that want ONLY to have their senses be overwhelmed by a heavy-fisted blend, would come away from this blend let down. There is of course nothing wrong with huge overwhelming blends, and I don't at all mean to suggest they they are only for the unrefined. Heck, all my other favorites are big sluggers for the most part. Yet, to those who are admirers of quality in all things, even if it may not be their cup of tea: I can never imagine a derisive word being aimed in Chelsea Morning's direction. It is perfect- in that its nature, and existence are fully realized. That is, it is a smashing success at just what it was set out to be.
Also, its worth saying that I can think of NO reason this could not be an all-day blend in two ways: background music, and object of study. If one wanted a pipe to simply fume in their mouths all day, this would fit the bill very well, as it is a very tame blend, and wont scorch you if you absent-mindedly start to really chug it. And, to those who have the luxury to devote attention directly to their pipes, there is much for your palate to contemplate throughout the day once you let your tongue go to the tobacco, as opposed to the other way around. Yes, I know it wasn't designed as an all-day, as it is meant to be the morning leg of an "all-day" series. And I am here to tell you, if the other blends in the "Old London" series are anywhere near as fine specimens in their rites as Chelsea Morning is in its own-it may well just become my entire rotation!
So, yes, I am a BIG fan of "Chelsea Morning" for lots of reasons. And I honestly think that if you are a lover of pipe smoking, this is sure to hold a special place in your heart. Even if your tastes lay in other tins, you will surely hold this blend as a masterpiece in the art of tobacco blending. There is no blend I recommend before, or higher than this one.

When I really got into pipes and tobacco about 10 years ago, I discovered the GLP line and spent hours pouring through his website, reading all I could, and getting deeper and deeper into the world of tobacco. I tried half a dozen GLP blends and loved them.
Chelsea Morning was the first new blend that Greg released after I discovered his line, and I immediately purchased a tin. From that point on, Chelsea Morning has been a steadfast favorite, tied for my #1 spot with Old Gowrie.
Chelsea Morning is so intriguing to me partly because, while it’s a lighter bodied smoke, there is a whole lot of flavor in that smoke. It doesn’t overwhelm your senses (you’re not gonna get Billy Budd’ed), but gives you all of the complex, subtle flavors you could want—perfect for a lazy morning, or tea time smoke.
The sweetish VAs are dominant, with the Orientals providing a lot of musty, woody, almost incense like flavors. Latakia and Perique are sub-players, laying a foundation of deep flavors—figgy, raisiny pepper from the Perique, and here and there a wisp of campfire and leather from the Latakia season what, for me, is really a Va/Oriental blend.
Nicotine level is a strong Medium-enough to satisfy but not wallop you. I recommend a big bowl, and a slow pace with this one. Although I’ve never had it bite from fast smoking, a slower pace will certainly enhance the array of flavors.
It’s wonderful with a cup of coffee on a lazy morning, and just as good with a cup of strong black tea in the afternoon. I tend to save Chelsea Morning for those times when I really want to sit back and enjoy a smoke for its own sake.
While living in the semi-wilderness in Michigan’s UP, i would occasionally wake up in my rustic cabin around 5am, make a pot of strong percolator coffee, and watch the mist rise on a lake while smoking some Chelsea Morning for an hour or so. I’ll always tie this blend to those memories!

As one reviewer noted, though this blend is mild to medium in strength, it is full of flavor. The sweetness from the Virginas and Orientals work wonderfully together. The spicy Orientals, though still mild, are still noticeable throughout the bowl. The Latakia is more evident in this blend than say, EMP, where I feel they fall too far in the background. The Perique content couldn't be any more perfect for me. It not only offers a bit of pepperiness but deepens the sweetness with a darker fruit/plum note, like salt bringing out the flavors of meat. The perfect combo is this tobacco with a light-medium roast coffee in the morning. It is in my top 3 tobacco list for a reason and is smoked daily. 9.5/10 (my highest rating at the moment)

This is one of the best English type mixtures I’ve tried in years. Zesty, smooth, full of flavour, it is a very inspiring smoke. None of the ingredients overshadow the other. It is a very skilful combination where every element seems to hold its own ground. It is also one of those mixtures that better help understand the difference between a Balkan and an English blend. The former seem to me stronger or heavier in the Latakia/Oriental department, whereas in the latter there is a more effective interplay of the Virginias.
By no means a strong or overwhelming tobacco, it still packs enough strength to make it a medium smoke, suitable for any time of the day. It comes in broken flake form, with thick chunks of dark and light brown leaf, with an occasional blackish hue here and there. It is easy to pack (but don’t press it too hard) and it lights up perfectly. For my palate, moisture is perfect. A slow burning, long lasting smoke, which has become one of my favourite English.
Highly recommended.

After a long break from pipe smoking I decided to revisit this old hobby and I'm now wondering why I left it for so long. Not wanting to make the same beginner mistake of smoking aromatics and suffering tongue bite I scoured this site until I narrowed my targets down. I used to smoke EMP as a first bowl of the day for a while but couldn't find anything to keep my interest. So hearing about CM as an alternative I gave it a try... and what a difference!
At first you are greeted with the classic English tones that one would expect but it doesn't take long before the different tobaccos start playing their roles. The first part of the bowl it's all about VA with a natural sweetness, nicely complemented by the orientals that give it some body. As you progress through the bowl, the perique starts to come through giving you that peppery hint while the ever so subtle sweetness subdues and plays a supporting role. So far only 2 relights were needed and I'll attribute that to me being a novice. Entering the 3rd and last part of the bowl, all flavours are harmonious but darker and more pronounce, there is no first fiddle here, all tobaccos are in alignment.
No gurgle, hardly any dottle, all smoked down to a powdery white ash. The tobacco was only dried for 10 minutes prior to loading the pipe.
So why is this better than EMP and why is this a great start as a morning pipe? Because sometimes less is more! While EMP is not a bad tobacco, to me it stays fairly one dimensional, a flat smoke. CM lets all the players have their say and then unites them in a very flavoursome smoke. Never pushing you in one direction but merely suggesting... is your next bowl latakia, or maybe a Vaper or would you like a nice balkan? It warms you up to what is to come, awakens your senses and invites you to think about the course of the day.
For those of you who are sensitive to lady N, do not worry. The nicotine delivery is as some have already pointed out very civilized. Smoke this one with a nice cup of coffee and if I may suggest, savour a small piece of dark (85%) chocolate with it. You will be amazed!
My new go to "pick me up" tobacco in the morning.

This is rapidly becoming one of my top favorites. I go to this when I'm in a contemplative mood, reading a book outdoors, etc. I would imagine that trying to balance out four different kinds of leaf must be difficult, and it feels like Pease got this exactly right. Almost every few puffs the flavor changes back and forth, keeping it incredibly interesting. I also find it a little less moist (or swampy??) than any other English I've had. It just seems less thick and oily, and more earthly and complex. I normally puff harder on English/Balkans than I do VAs, but this one I have to sip because it's so complex, and the Perique adds even more to that. This is fine, because the flavor is huge. Not too much of a certain leaf and not too little of it either. Right when I think there could be more Oriental, I begin tasting it again.
I can see this being great outdoors in the fall and winter. I just had in on a slightly rainy, cooler summer day commuting into work. Lovely.
Great stuff. One word description: Complex
Going back to edit this one to say that so far this is the best blend I've been able to pair with a cup of coffee. It's almost like it was designed with that in mind.

A friend of mine gave this to me last week and my gray matter is not what it used to be and almost forgot, sorry about that Dawg. Maybe that dementia thing is for real. So, I am sitting on the porch this morning and a light bulb goes off and I go inside and get this blend. It says it goes good with a cup of coffee. Everything goes good with a cup of coffee in my book. This tin is dated 2/21/19 and has the usual faint sweet smell to it, must be the VA’s. It is a course cut, not really a ribbon in my book. This blend is another one that if I was not told it had Latakia I would not have guessed, much less the touch of Perique that it also contains. What I taste is a nice sourness from the Oriental/Turkish tobaccos more than I believe the VA’s. I like the Orientalness of this one and though toward the end it may be slightly harsh nothing that a new bowl can’t fix. I noticed a few references to Dunhill’s Early Morning Pipe and out of curiosity I counted the number of times that it was mentioned. Out of 133 reviews, EMP was referenced in some form 29 times. If anyone out there is wanting to smoke this as an EMP clone this one is not even close. Anyway, EMP is back under the Peterson label as we speak. I try to rate what I smoke on what it is and not what one says it should be. In this case I like the fact that the Latakia is standing way in the back so the Orientals/Turkish can shine. I like sourdough bread and making it and the taste of this sourness is good. I really do not have a morning blend set aside anyway, I just grab something that pops in my head. I live in an area where the wild Red-crowned Parrots fly over with all of their loud squawking and it was pleasant smoking this with yes indeed my morning coffee and taking pictures of the birds.

LEAF: A ribbon cut tobacco that seems more like a carefully broken flake than a traditional ribbon cut, can be broken up further if desired but I smoked it as is. Mottled and speckled gold through brow, with some nice dark Latakia scattered throughout.
TIN AROMA: Dark fruits, tangy and a little sweet, smells very fresh and vibrant for a blend with latakia, it is more a condiment than some of the heavier Lat blends out there, a sweet smokiness but nothing too campfire like. The perique pepper note is noticeable on top.
TASTE: As I have come to expect from blends of this calibre, it tastes much like it smells. The Va’s are at the front with the Orientals, fresh and grassy but still tangy and spicy. Apart from getting a good hit with the first light of the bowl, the Latakia largely lingers in the background proving good depth and body with a sweet, slightly woodsy smokiness that helps balance out the oriental tanginess that is present the whole way. The perique for me was on and off throughout the bowl, and as usual become more pronounced as you got further towards the bottom, with a perfect level of peppery spice to top everything off and tie it all together. Consistently creamy and complex, playing back and forth between the components the whole way with no single leaf overpowering the other. Extremely well balanced. This is an extremely satisfying, creamy, smokey blend that stays interesting the whole way without getting confusing or losing its way. The nicotine seems to creep up with the Perique as well and can be a bit surprising if you don’t look out. This really rewards a long smoke from a large bowl, slowly sipped and retrohaled.
SMOKEABILITY: As is tradition with Pease blends, tin moisture was perfect for me, cut was great. Lit up straight away and stayed lit very well, burnt down to a great ash with noting to spare. Burns cool and consistent the whole way and won’t be upset if you get a bit excited puffing away a bit aggressively, although it tastes better if you don’t.
SUMMARY: As with all other Pease blends I have smoked I cannot fault this. It’s like perfect English and a perfect VaPer rolled into one. Smokes like a dream, tastes even better. It’s like a more amazing version of EMP which is similar but not as complex, if you like that, this is worth a look. I usually gravitate towards more lat heavy blends, but this was a very welcome departure and shows how Latakia can, and should often be, just one of the players in a smoke and not the star. Very close to a perfect smoke for me.

Never been a fan of Dunhill Early Morning: too heavy in nicotine (especially for a blend labeled as "Early Morning") and too dirty in taste. This GLPease blend, which I suppose is meant to a similar target audience, certainly fixes the dirty taste of the Dunhill blend (and is obviously made from better leaf), but still is a bit too strong for me in the heaviness department. Not that it's EXCEEDINGLY strong, mind you, but when I taste a glimpse of Latakia I want the full flavour... and with lighter flavoured blend I probably tend to overpuff to compensate, bringing along a nicotine hit (and at times bitterness, and not just a hint of it).
Anyway, if this kind of blend (Virginia + a pinch of Latakia) fits you, you should certainly enjoy it very much. Personally I question a bit the presence of Perique, which is not suited for such a blend in my book. And in any case, I seem to prefer the smoother/creamier experience offered by Piccadilly when (it happens rarely) I want a blend with just a hint of Latakia.
Ayway, objectively, it is a quality tobacco and the slightly thick cut is fantastic, offering a very nice burning rate and a dry smoking experience.

I make it a point never to review anything until I've had at least several bowls of a blend. It takes time to get to know a blend, especially since first impressions can be deceiving. I've known blends I loved the first bowl or two that turned out to be duds, and others I've hated the first couple of times that turned out to be treasured go-to blends.
I'm going to break that rule here. Last night at the monthly meeting of the Toronto Pipe Club we all sampled Pease's new release. You cannot get G L Pease in Canada, it must be shipped from elsewhere, so I was very grateful to have an opportunity to sample this so early in its release since I was looking forward to trying it -- it advertised itself as just the kind of blend I'd really enjoy. And, since I don't know when I'll be able to have another bowl of it, I couldn't wait to offer my first impression.
Straight to the point -- this is an exceptional blend! It's very seldom that a blend sings to me the way this one did on the first bowl. It's also very seldom that promotional copy lives up to itself. I cannot improve on what Mr Pease says of his own blend: "easy to pack, easy to smoke... The flavours are lively and engaging, with a subtle fruitiness and gentle smokiness that wakes up the palate. For those expecting a Latakia powerhouse, this ain't that. The Cyprus leaf provides depth and character; it's certainly present, but it's not the dominant voice... The orientals present in this one add another dimension to the smoke. It's really a delightful blend." I'll also add it's very creamy with a silky, rounded mouthfeel.
If I had one criticism, it's that, like all of his blends I've tried, it tasted a tad young and raw, and would benefit from some aging to smooth down its rough edges. But this is a niggling complaint given how exceptional it was in every other respect.
This is a major winner. It's only the fifth Pease blend I've tried, but it's handily the best. And it needn't be smoked only in the morning -- it would make a terrific all-day blend, too. I intend to always keep some on hand.
(Mind you, this is after only one bowl, and could be a misplaced infatuation. If my opinion changes after I get to know it better I will definitely be back for an update.)

This review is for a first edition 2009 tin of Chelsea morning. Time has allowed the Virginias to fully ferment and present their tangy sweet earthy bouquet and has also allowed the smoky Latakia and Orientals to fully meld with the Virginias. The tin note also presents some small raisin and pepper undertones.
I had big expectations for this blend given all the positive reviews. However, I was left somewhat disappointed. Not by the quality of the leaf but by its lack of traditional Englishness. I knew going in it was going to be a light English. I was thinking more along the lines of Presbyterian but, to my palate it's much lighter than that.
My palette changes with the seasons and I was expecting a little bit more of an English forward blend. To me Chelsea Morning is more of a nuanced Virginia blend. Think of a VaPer slightly spiced with Latakia and Orientals. I usually don't smoke Virginias in the fall/winter as I like more heavier blend when it’s cold outside.
The moisture content in the tin was spot on as it took to the flame right away and didn't need many relights. To me CM is just too light. I know the Latakia is in there but I really don't taste it that much in the smoke. Once it a while I’ll get a sour note but it’s mostly sweet Virginia that I get. It’s very smooth to me and you can puff as hard as you want and will not even get the slightest bit of bite. The aftertaste is also very light and fleeting. It's an overall good blend definitely but, more of a summertime smoke for me.

Upon opening tin I was greeted with Smokey Latakia, oriental tangy fruitiness and sweet Virginias. First light is smokey Latakia and slightly fruity fig? As bowl progresses it quickly becomes Oriental forward with Virginia’s blending in and becoming very tasteful. Perique is there but only as a slight touch of spice. Smokes and taste complex, smooth and creamy to end of bowl. Very good! After 10 months aging Perique has come forward more and Virginia’s have become deeper and mustier. Very nice! Opened a 2 year old tin and wow! Virginia’s have deepened and sweetened much more and are even more forward with tangy/sour orientals an extremely close second. Perique rounds it out with the Latakia bringing up the very back. Just excellent. I should note that this is not just a morning smoke. Could easily be an all day and is excellent with the afternoon coffee or tea.

GL Pease Chelsea Morning
I’ve been smoking this blend on and off for the last two weeks, usually a bowl on the drive to or from work, upon first opening that tin, thre orientals and Turkish really hit my nose, secondly was the Latakia.
This blend needed little drying time, categorized as an English, I find this blend very oriental forward with the Virginia’s coming in providing some sweetness, boy do I love the VA’s in this one. This blend is so oriental forward and heavy, while I enjoy Orientals the mix is a little overpowering and sweet sour dynamic is drowned out due to this. The time I’ve spent smoking this I have to say I was disappointed that this wasn’t an all-star blend, something I usually come to expect from GL Pease.
When I first bought this blend I envisioned it as a proper replacement for Dunhill EMP, although it is not, nor close in my opinion. A good medium English with more oriental forward dynamics. Give it a shot or don’t flat 3 out of 4.

This is a fine tobacco. Never a dull moment does it offer. For starting the day however, I'll stay with Dunhill's EMP because it is much milder and lighter. This is more complex and has deeper undertones, especially a punchier Perique content. It better fits my rotation as an afternoon/evening smoke. Right now, I am smoking it somewhere in West Africa where the time is 4pm (10am Eastern - New York time) and I am drinking a bottle of Guiness Stout. Perfect fit. Perfect mix.
Highly recommended for those who prefer a stronger mix of, should I say 'VaRienT', for Virginia-Oriental-Turkish (Balkan).

Pease Pilgrimage Reviews (a tasting journey through every GLPease blend) Tin date: 2/18/10
Let me warn you ahead of time that vile, disgusting stuff like this should not even be allowed on the market. Run. Fast. Away from that mouse! Away from those Pease etailers and retailers! Get as far from them as you can! You are getting very sleepy.....YOU MUST NOT BUY ANY MORE CHELSEA MORNING! BWAH HA HA HA HA!
Well, just in case you're still here...
Appearance: A mottled, multi-colored blend, including some little flecks, some striated slices, and some lumber. I pulled a stick out of my tin, but the variety of forms and shapes in the blend is interesting to me. Very easy to pack, perfect humidity (or lack thereof, since I find most of Greg's blends on the dry side, just the way I like 'em).
Aroma: The tin aroma is delicious. Think Abingdon or Westminster but with much less Latakia. The same characteristics are there, but the smokiness is much more subdued.
Pipe 1: Meer Billiard Pipe 2: GBD pot Pipe 3: Stanwell Vario Billiard
Flavor: In a nutshell, Chelsea Morning absolutely puts Early Morning Pipe to shame. There is a reason why everyone is drooling on themselves over this one. If you're on the fence over this blend, it's time to jump down and cowboy up! Fork over the ten bucks and step into the arena of this delicious, destined-to- be-a-classic, perfectly balanced, medium English blend. If you're even remotely interested in english blends you owe it to yourself to try it.
Starts off great, ends up delicious. If there is one word I would use to describe Chelsea Morning it would be balance. None of the ingredients vie for attention, all of them contribute to the exceptional end result. The very definition of symbiosis, where the individual parts work for the benefit of the whole.
Even though very light, there is enough Latakia in there for lovers of Latakia (like me) to enjoy, there is enough complexity to keep lovers of contemplative smoking interested, and there is enough flavor and strength to keep it interesting. I am definitively NOT a fan of mild smokes, and this one falls squarely in the medium part of the spectrum. Amp up the temperature, and you can easily cross over into the low end of full-flavored.
If you concentrate, you can pick out some of the flavors. The Virginia sweetness and foundation are noticeable. The oriental leaf is is perfect proportion. The Latakia gives a noticeable does of smokiness and smoothness, and the Perique actually is noticeable as a pungent, very slightly sourness to balance the smoky and sweet.
When Greg hits is right, he knocks it out of the park. I used to live near Chicago, so you Cubs fans will know about the buildings beyond center field where the locals gather on the rooftops to watch the game. That's where Mr. Pease directed this one, except the ball kept traveling right on into Lake Michigan.
Four stars, of course.
Wait a minute, I meant NEGATIVE four. Yeah, negative four stars. Vile stuff. Run away. Leave it for me to dispose of safely and properly!

Oh my God, it's sweet! A slightly sweet English that has no additives I feel.
Yes an exciting way to light your first rousing smoke of the day, with tea, coffee, bacon, biscuits or whatever.
You can definitely sense the latakia, though it is not heavy in the mix. It's a little sharp at times, and this is apparently not Louisiana Perique but the new Acadian Perique added.
I have smoked it all day at times -- one bowl in morning, one in afternoon, and one in evening for over a week. Nothing else. The tin is about empty. I used the same pipe (new Peterson natural). Sure my first 10 bowls may not have been right on the tobacco flavor due to break in time, but the next dozen or more are.
A little like Dan's Gordon Pym, but lighter and a sweet note. Not at all like Dunhill's EMP, but no attempt is made to say that it is.
A thick ribbon, broken cake type of cut, that burns well.
Not heavy but intoxicating all the more. A great treat for all English puffers. Excelsior.

Tin note of smoky, tart fruit, and spices. Tobacco broken flakes are orangish tan, brown and darker brown. Tobacco is moist and could uses a little drying but rubs out easily. Burns slow with many relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium and consistent, with notes of slightly sweet dark fruit, wood, dry earth, spicy, musty grass, floral, spiced bread, herbal sweet, a tangy lemon zest background note, and a peppery retro. Oriental/Turkish is leading with Virginia and Perique supporting. Latakia had the night off. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great.

I must admit I'm not one to enjoy my pipes early in the morning, as even though I tend to wake at a decent hour, I find I've other things occupying my attention. Perhaps this is a joy I can experience more often during retirement years should I be fortunate enough to make it that far. And if I do, G.L. Pease's Chelsea Morning will be a prime choice.
Chelsea Morning's tin note is fragrant, with an alluring mix of floral, sour, and smoky aromas wafting to the nose. The tobaccos themselves are many, with bright virginias and orientals being the bulk of the blend, but there is perique and latakia to be found as well.
The blend smokes rather well. Relights are moderate, and there is little tongue bite to contend with. This is meant to be a mild smoke enjoyed upon waking, after all, perhaps with a cup of coffee or over a farmer's breakfast. But don't mistake mild for boring. No, sir; this blend is savory and sweet, and carries surprising depth and complexity.
This is an English blend, but the latakia plays the role of laying the foundation, thus ensuring that the natural smokiness is omnipresent throughout the smoke. This helps anchor the naturally sweet virginias, which are vibrant and rich. The orientals take the most assertive role, offering a savory and slightly sour profile that hits the palette first, with the stewed fruit flavor of the perique ending the ordeal with a whisper and a pleasant after taste. This blend never tastes peppery or overly sour or sweet, but it is a very flavorful one all the same.
This is a masterful blend that has a very specific goal in mind, and accomplishes it with aplomb. Zesty, sweet, and interesting without being overwhelming or harsh. And like any good breakfast delight, this can, and should, be enjoyed at all times of the day. Wonderful!

First of all, let me say that with no other blend I have reviewed before, I have not had so much difficulty in describing it. I opened a tin of Chelsea Morning almost three weeks ago, and in that time I have smoked 4 ounces of excellent English tobacco, but could not describe it. There are several reasons for that, and I'll be sure to mention them below.
The 8 ounce tin was labeled "December 30, 2015." The appearance of the blend was a rather coarse cut in a coarse ribbon of even, almost monochromatic brown milk chocolate color. The tobacco has been sitting, maturing in a tin, for just under six years. I know that a great many fans of latakia blends believe that over the years, English blends lose flavor as the latakia, they say, becomes more "flat" and unexpressive. I don't agree with this opinion. Having smoked a number of tins of blends with 5-6 year old latakia, I'm sure this is a great age: the initial predatory note of smokiness exploding a bomb a couple of meters around goes away, and the tobacco flavor becomes more whole and complex.
That's what happened this time, too. The flavor of the blend - the primary quite complex, but very even, a bouquet of wildflowers, a light note of unsweetened apple, bitter chocolate, malt and stained oak logically add up to a flavor similar to that of a good Highland whiskey. But if you sniff longer, a sweet-smoky note of latakia with a spice of allspice pepper emerges. The aroma is very difficult to separate into individual notes, the time spent in the tin, it literally became one - as it is with an aged whiskey. I opened the tin a few times, poured the tobacco over and dried it a little in the air, and vice versa, moistened it a little - but the constituent parts of the flavor I caught with great difficulty and far from the first time. During this time I've tried half a dozen pipes - billiards, bents, large, medium and small. What I write below about the taste is a kind of averaging.
The taste is barley malt, a good note of cardamom and pepper mixture, a slight fruity sweetness, a little cream and cocoa, and literally a tiny bit of smokiness. The taste, quite dense, gives the feeling that the tobacco is stronger than it really is. I listened to the author and never stuffed the pipe tightly, so the blend smoked easily and coolly in any pipe. However, small pipes may not be able to handle it and may not reveal the full flavor due to the rather rough cut of the tobacco. The tobacco smokes quite dry and doesn't bite. The flavor is very calm - it's not the brightness of the balkan or the sweetness of the aromatics, it's a very smooth blend that turns into a little softer from the middle, losing its spiciness. However, I have noticed that different pipes exhibit different accents. In bents this tobacco is slightly sweeter and more airy, while billiards, on the other hand, makes it even drier and denser on the palate. Either way, the basic flavor doesn't change, but the difference is noticeable. The strength of the tobacco is a little below average, I did not feel the nicotine hit once. The tobacco leaves some moisture in the pipe. The ash is an even gray color, fine, the tobacco burns well.
The aroma of the smoke - a little wood, a slight smokiness, a sweet note. Probably not everyone will like it, but I can't say it's intrusive. The smoke is light, but the aroma stays in the room for a long time.
Bottom line: this is an extremely balanced blend for leisurely smoking. It would certainly be good for morning walks with the dog or with a cup of morning coffee. I liked it a lot, especially in the larger bents. I'm probably ready to buy it regularly instead of my beloved but more expensive Boutique Blend, and let it sit out for a couple or three years if it turns out to be fresh.

Presentation: Slightly chunky broken ribbon cut. There are some misconceptions about what ribbon is supposed to look like and this one is thicker than one might think, however not as chunky as some of the other Englishes offered in the GLP line. A very rich and warming mahogany brown and red with very little light or dark leaf noticeable.
Palette: One can immediately know that this blend is full of great orientals and some nice red VA. The bouquet is sweet and tangy along with a touch of spice. What I like about CM is that it isn't heavy on latakia and adds perique to the mix. On light up, the red VA and orientals are initially the main players, while the light handed latakia and a touch of perique keep things interesting.
Performance: Burns well, cool, and at a moderate pace. Mild nicotine and doesn't bother me to smoke two bowls in a row.
Conclusion: Chelsea Morning is another winner in my book. I tend to prefer my English/Balkans with perique (Sunset Harbor Flake, Nightcap). I find that it is right up my alley with the floral and tangy orientals and just the right amount of latakia. Definitely a staple in many peoples rotation. This is my second tin and I thin in the future I'll add some 8oz tins.

Beautiful to behold, pressed, then ribbon cut, can usefully be rubbed out a bit more before loading, but not absolutely necessary. Upon lighting, all the sweetness of the many constituent tobaccos, mains and condiments, hits my taste buds at once, but after a minute or two of sipped puffs, the sweetness subsides into lovely creamy Orientals among lovely Virginias, whose residual sweetness mingles with traces of smokey Cyprian Latakia and the sweetsour pinch of Perique for a wistful, reverie-filled smoke, with a medium nic hit that hasn't yet jostled wildly an organ to complaint. It will stay lit if mindfully, gently tamped. I've been rationing this tin out over several months and am close to reordering. Very satisfying, but Pease is also rather costly and doesn't sell in bulk. I'll get an 8 oz tin when I see it on sale again and add it to my rotation. I don't understand how anyone can describe room-notes while puffing, but my wife tells me that, compared to my preferred English and Balkan blends, Chelsea Morning is "benign, less pungent, significantly less offensive." That said, she must depart the screened-in porch, but not in great haste.

Been thoroughly enjoying the hobby of pipe smoking for about 5 years now, being one to enjoy the subtle pleasure of trying new blends often, I have endulged in just about every type of blend out there (English, VaPer, Burley, Aros and all the crossovers in between). I’ve seemed to settle my palate on the mild to moderate “English” blends as of late. My recent rotation including “Squadron Leader, EMP, Standard Mix, Boswell Northwoods and Countryside, GL Pease Westminster etc” . I grabbed up some “Chelsea Morning” and fell in love as some of the others felt “flat” at times and this mixture was brighter and sharper (Likely the Va’s and periques) still with the background of smoky Latakia. Interesting and worth pointing out, I was enjoying this so much, puffing away and treating it as a “mild” English, I may have underestimated it. Turns out, I ended up with quite the Nicotine Hit and had to end my pipe enjoyment early for some sugar and time lying down. Not sure if it was the circumstances, this specific batch (tin), my puffing cadence and lack of awareness that did me in (maybe all of the above) but be careful. Although and “mild” blend, it did me in. In any event, it won’t stop me from enjoying it (albeit with a little more awareness and respect for the blend) overall an excellent blend with more Va taste experience than the average mild English that can sometimes be a little “bland” .

I love a good early morning smoke. My favorite blend for this is a light English. While searching around to replace dunhill EMP, I found my way to Chelsea Morning. Nobody was more surprised then me to discover Chelsea Morning is a champion and does an early morning pipe better than EMP. It's flavor is deeper, more creamy, complex and intriguing. Each puff has a wonderful bready Virginia note paired with tangy or sour orientals which are then quickly enveloped by creamy Latakia with a smokey, nutty, earthy finish. The Orientals are far more pronounced and sour in CM and it's both more complex and unbalanced. Other reviews have identified Izmer Oriental. One can say it makes things interesting... or one can say it clashes and detracts. I'm of the former. The Latakia is lovely and lightly done. It balances harmoniously with the sweet notes in the Virginia. The Perique is peppery and shows randomly to good effect. CM smokes like a dream with billows of volumous flavorful smoke. You can puff like a freight train and your only punishment will be the domination of Oriental. Utterly relaxing, full of flavor, with a pinch-O-nic to start the day. Four stars!

I've always liked Chelsea Morning from the first time I tried it, nearly a decade ago. It was my first introduction to blends containing Latakia. I could not have tried a better first blend as an introduction to Latakia. That aside, I am now trying this tin after 5+ years of a aging in the cellar.
This blend has plenty enough Virginia tobaccos in it to make aging worthwhile. It was always a mellow mixture, now it is extremely mellow and smooth. All of the constituent tobaccos blend their flavors and characters together in a harmony that is rarely so completely melded. It's difficult to focus on the parts because the whole is so perfect, like an orchestra perfectly executing the first movement of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony.
I would still have given this blend the highest rating when it was new. But it needs to be said that it deserves an even greater rating after 5 years of age. To be honest, I didn't expect this would become this much better. I predicted this would happen to Triple Play, but not so much in Chelsea Morning. The take-away is simple. Put some back in the cellar, it's worth the wait.

Chelsea Morning is a nice refreshing discovery for me. With McClelland getting out of the tobacco business I was really afraid that the art of making complex, flavorful milder blends my go the way of the dinosaur, but Chelsea Morning is proof the GL Pease can do both ends of the English spectrum with expertise. The current (or former now I guess) Dunhill blends may have been mild but they were all mostly flavorless for my liking. EMP has a unique flavor but a little flat and Standard and London mixture are just too light for me. McC Legends, the FM series and the Oriental series had great layers of complexity and a light hand relative to the Lat heavy blends that are very popular (and I like very much, but I am not always in in that mood). Chelsea Morning has a nice Oriental tin note, sour and spicy with a hint of Virginias in the background. If you really get a good snoot full you can pick up the smokey Latakia as well. The flavor is really fantastic. The Orientals are the star of this show but there are layers of flavor that present themselves throughout this smoke. There isn't a ton of Perique in this blend but as I mindlessly puff, at times I would think I was smoking a VaPer, but not a normal one. The mix of Perique with the Orientals and VA's is really unique. When really concentrating you can really enjoy the Orientals playing off the other tobacco's, they are primarily woody and slightly sour. The spiciness in the blend is a combination of the perique and Orientals and this creates a really tasty spicy profile: peppery, savory and in a way reminds me of the spice you get from cinnamon without the cinnamon flavor (if that makes any sense). The smoke is also creamy and has an almost Balkan like malty flavor thanks to the touch of Latakia. The Virginias are tough to tease out on their own but you do get the earthy Red VA's particularly mid bowl. Very flavorful and easy going smoke. For the genre, a mild English with a lot of flavor, I strongly recommend it. I'd also say if you like Oriental/Turkish forward blends this is a must try. If you gargle road tar and chimney creosote for breakfast, this one may not be for you.

Another excellent Tobacco from G. L. Pease. I would give this 3.5 stars. I have been a fan of Maltese Falcon and decided to give Chelsea Morning a try for something lighter and what a treat. Upon opening the tin you definitely smell the smokiness from the Latakia but also have the subtle sweetness from Virginia and to me I also got a slight note of spice from the Perique. The cut is a nice large ribbon cut which you can break up a bit but I had no problem loading. Out of the tin I found the moisture level perfect and it burned well with little need for relight and burned down to a nice white ash. The smoke itself was really enjoyable, you get the Latakia and Orientals up front but they are so smooth with no harsh bite at all. I got the Perique spice especially on retro hale but in general everything blended well into a complex but light smoke that went perfect with morning coffee. Towards the end of the bowl I did get some more sweetness from the Virginia and the after taste after smoking was really pleasant with more sweetness, almost caramel, vs. heavy fragrant Latakia you might get from other heavy blends. No tongue bite whatsoever and at least in my Peterson 106 Billiard this smoked perfectly and cool. I will definitely be putting this into my regular rotation. If you are a fan of G.L. Pease blends than no doubt you will enjoy the added complexity that Chelsea Morning brings to the table vs. other lighter morning blends.

If you want a morning smoke, the following blend will be perfect: Samuel Gawith - Squadron Leader or skiff; G. L. Pease - Piccadilly (Classic Collection), Kensington (Classic Collection); if you prefer a little bit stronger, head up to Drucquer & Sons - Blairgowrie, Samarra (Original Mixtures) or Blackpoint (Classic Collection).
Why don't Chelsea Morning fit me?
Like Beer said: "Personally I question a bit the presence of Perique, which is not suited for such a blend in my book. And in any case, I seem to prefer the smoother/creamier experience offered by Piccadilly when (it happens rarely) I want a blend with just a hint of Latakia."
Like Jimlinks said: there are a few harsh spots here and after that the halfway point( my note: cellar can change this ); the individual tobaccos don't seem work together as well as they should.
In other words, compared to Dunhill early morning, it is far better; but with distracting Perique, inharmonious ingredient and a little too much strength for a morning smoke, for me it is a two and a half stars rating tobacco.

EDIT JANUARY 2018:
The more I smoke this, the more I like it. The balance between orientals and sweet, sweet Virginias is just perfect, and the touch of latakia elevates it all. It still has a tendency to burn hot, but I also find that I am extra sensitive to bite from any tobacco. If I smoke it in a wide bowl, avoid packing it to tight and smoke it very slowly (preferably on a bench in a nice park, where the pale spring sun feels warm in the nippy air), it will be divine.
ORIGINAL REVIEW, JULY 2017:
This was the very first G. L. Pease blend I ever tried, and although I'm not an experienced pipe smoker, I immediately understood why people are applauding these blends so much.
Complex but easy going. If you want to, you can chase tastes forever. Oriental musty, Perique peppery and very refreshing refreshing, with the comforting sweetness of the Virginias coming through. The latakia is there and provides some of its smoky softness: there's too little of it to overpower the other components, but just enough for you not to miss it. This blend is, as the name suggests, a perfect morning smoke, but I often choose this blend at other times of the day too, provided I have time to sit down, smoke it properly and thoroughly enjoy it. This is one of the blends that I really enjoy, and which still intrigues and challenges me although I have smoked it quite a lot recently.
The smoke will stay delicious throughout the bowl, at least as long as you smoke it slowly: this beauty will bite you and ruin the rest of the smoke if you puff too hard or too fast. (As a fairly new pipe smoker, I have used the blend as an incentive for practising good smoking technique, as the gain of smoking it properly is utter enjoyment and the punishment for being hasty is corresponding amounts of pain and irritation.)
The tobacco will IMO need some drying out before the pipe is loaded. For me, this blend doesn't require any more relights than most other blends do. Leaves a little moisture in the bowl, at least when I smoke it in my Comoy's prince.

My morning pipes are smoked outside, and we have the first touches of frost on the ground, so all the Peasian bells and whistles are lost on me. This blend is like a BMW's wiring harness - too complicated by half for what it's trying to do.

Let me start off by saying that after a few tins of this, I think it may be my favorite blend currently. It is very complex. You can smoke two bowls back to back and notice different things. To me it seems to start off with a range of Virginia's, and they seem to be the main player but the stage is quickly shared by orientals and a light Latakia flavor. It slowly gets stronger and smokier as the bowl smokes down. All the while, remaining to have a sweet and slightly spicy note to it. You can focus in on different elements and notice them more if you concentrate. This is a very contemplative smoke. It can easily be an all day smoke. Nicotine level is never overpowering, even when I smoke two bowls back to back, yet it feels full. The smoke is creamy and just plain delicious. A great blend for people wanting to try Latakia blends. I could not think of a better way to start your day then a cup of coffee and a bowl of Chelsea Morning.

What an awesome mixture!! I'm really starting to love G.L. Pease and his blends. This blend is so fragrant when smoked. In the tin you can smell the ripe tart and almost vinegar flavors of the red VAs, along with a earthy musty smell (good thing), accompanied by just a bit of smokeiness from the latakia along with a tiny amount of plums, spice and hay. The smoke is smooth and creamy and tastes of hay and tart virginias for the most part, but there are floral nuances and smokey notes from the latakia and orientals. Some spiciness tickles the back of the throat but ever so slightly...not as scratchy on the back of the throat or mouth like the dunhill blends. Even though I would call this a light english/lat blend it is also very deep and robust but elegant and light at the same time. Truly an amazing blend!
The more I smoke this the more I enjoy it. It's impressive how light and fragrant it is while being flavorful enough to be satisfying. It's very light on the latakia and I think is a perfect blend to smoke with your morning coffee (which is generally when I'll have a bowl).

Tangy, smoky, spicy, sweet, a bit more refreshing than on the dark and deep side. It is easy to handle, complex in taste and I’m willing to say there are numerous layers of taste to explore; the smoker can chose what he/she likes to focus on. Full of flavor and really satisfying, medium on the spot to me. About half way through the bowl it becomes creamier and nuttier. I like Chelsea Morning best after I let the pre-opened tin sit for a couple of days, sometimes weeks. It is because of this blend that I described Dunhill EMP as a bit flat and undefined.
I’m not saying this is a blend like no other. I say this does fulfill the promise others have made maybe just a little better, especially to the more experienced pipers.

Yet another blend I've mixed feelings about. On the one hand, the taste of the tobacco is superb (if not too full), and the side stream, well, it's outstanding, but, for me, this blend packs such a nicotine wallop, it sent my head spinning and stomach churning. Also, my throat paid a heavy price—this blend smoked harsh and rough for me, it wasn't a pleasant experience (I wonder if it was the perique in this that was responsible for that?).
Chelsea Morning is really full of both the things I love about pipe smoking, and of the things I hate about pipe smoking. If your sensitive to high levels of nicotine and really full tasting tobacco, bypass this one, if not, you'll probably like it a lot. I'll split the difference and give it a solid two stars.

I bought this one after going on a little Pease binge, this was one of the ones available that I had yet to sample so decided to dip my toe in it's veritable pond.
The tin note I found is a strange one, it strikes me as being of engine oil and meat, it reminded me of mechanics having a bacon sandwich while on a lunch break as tools lie across the garage floor beside a dismantled engine. The tobacco, as always, has rich darkly coloured browns with a few flecks of lighter notes dashing it nicely, I always love the colours Mr Please makes his tobacco. Packing is easy, in spite of some chunky ribbons and so is the lighting. The flavour is a mild one, the latakia is evident early on but is far from dominant as hints of fruit and more than a generous garnish of cream begin to kick in later.
This is a very mellow relaxing smoke that is just pure enjoyment, a good all day smoke, though I found myself smoking it more in the afternoon. It's more like some light Mozart than some rousing Tchaikovsky. Not one for determined lat-heads perhaps, but one for everyone should like it. Me, I love the stuff. Thank you again Mr Pease.

Back in 2009 there was much excitement surrounding the release of Chelsea Morning and even though a moderate Pease fan, I bought a sleeve of five tins a month after the release. With much disappointment, I struggled to get through the first tin and even gave away part of it. I ended up storing the remaining four tins in the cellar. Now, five years later, opening a 2009 tin, I have a much better sense of what this blend is all about. The tin note is sour and smoky. And the spun cut tobacco has melded nicely. While I think this is true of most all blends, Pease blends really seem to show their stuff with some age and CM is no exception. There is a lot of complexity to CM with the component tobaccos showing themselves at different places in the smoke. I can’t recall smoking a blend that smokes so differently from smoke to smoke and one pipe verses another. But I mean this as positive, not a negative. Most often the Virginias lead, but there is a creaminess that seems to come from the Latakia and Orientals. Then at times the small amount of Perique shows up. This is not a Latakia heavy blend at all, but there’s more of it than I prefer in my morning pipe. For me this would be more of a late morning or mid-day smoke rather than my first pipe of the day, but a tasty blend all the same.

This tobacco was my first step away from aromatics and into the realm of higher quality tobaccos. I was forwarned that I may hate this stuff based off of what I have previously been smoking(aromatics and common US OTC brands). The tin was dated 05/15/2012. So this is a pretty fresh batch.
Opening the tin I was greeted by an aroma that clearly stated "You have never had anything like this". It was interesting. Reminded me of leather and earth in a pleasant sense, very robust. I packed my favorite briar being carful not to over pack. It was a little difficult to light. It took several char lights and tamping before it got going properly. And throughout the bowl I needed to relight twice while smoking at a moderate/slow pace.
Taste: I'll tell you with full confidence that this will become part of my rotation from now on. The taste is wonderful. Occasionally I would get a note of something different, something I can't quite put my finger on. Whatever it is, I love it. This is earthy, smokey, with hints of leather and wood. Not like leather and wood smells burning, but more like the impression you get when you walk into a place full of antiques and history. It is hard for me to properly explain. But it is very pleasant and pleasing.
Room note: The family seems to like it. No complains at all. I was a little worried about this as they are used to my aromatics. From what I can detect, as the man behind the pipe, it has a smooth room note that is quite nice.
Final thoughts: Outstanding. I'm already gathering my other OTC brands from around the house to give away. I've been awakened to something I've been missing in a good pipe smoke and I'm not looking back. The neighbor is going to be happy today. He's about to recieve 10oz of OTC tobaccos in various brands which I'm never going to smoke again.

I'm not a big Latakia smoker, but I continue to try different ones hoping that I'll like one of them. I've finally found one that's really enjoyable. It took the second bowl for it to really click with me.
for me, It starts off with the Latakia "smokeyness" at the start and revisits throughout the bowl, especially when relighting. The virginias really begin to come through at mid-bowl all the way till the end. near the end is where I started picking up that natural sweetness from the Virginias. I have not been able to pick up any Perique yet, but I'm sure it's there somewhere.
all in all, this is a very good blend, I think the Dark Lord has opened my eyes to the Latakia world. I'm not ready to Lat-bombs, but I can definitely appreciate flavor that Lat lends to blends, if only in small doses for now.
If you're looking to dip your hands in the Lat blends, I would highly suggest giving Chelsea Morning a try. you just might find that it's for you!

I don't know what I'm doing wrong or what I'm missing out on here. I've enjoyed some really good Pease blends, but this.....? It seems nothing like the description, despite the pipe I use. I simply cannot mesh with this blend. Pungent and heavy with the smell of damp hay and dried grass. Lights up bitter and strong, and keeps going in that direction for the short span I can endure it. Sharp, harsh, and hot on the tongue, I found greater pleasure discarding the remnants of the tin, a bitter and disagreeable weed.

This is a poor blend of cheap tobacco. Better look into your blender and supplier, Pease, I suggest you are getting outbid at the tobacco auctions.
Glad I tried a Green Little Peas blend, but I will stick with Gawith, at least they know how to blend quality tobacco, which is why it is hard to get, and has been around for a few hundred years.

Well I recieved my first tins of Chelsea Morning in this morning and I usually give things a few smokes before I give my two cents. Usually that means 3 or 4 days of smoking, today however it means I've had 4 bowls already and I think I might have a 5th in a minute.
First off I am a Virginia guy, not a latakia lover. I gave up on latakia when I couldn't get my hands on Dunhill Standard Mixture Medium anymore. I thought I would give this a try for the heck of it and I was blown away. From a guy who smokes Reiner Long Golden Flake religiously that means something.
The bowl starts off with a strong hit of Latakia at the charring light but immediatly the sweetness of the virginia's hit. The first 15 minutes or so are a nice sweet flavor. It's about the 15 minute mark where every single bowl I've smoked did the same thing. It suddenly goes creamy and very nutty out of nowhere. But the flavor is absolutely delicious. It smokes clean down to the very bottom of the bowl.
The only slight criticism I can give it is that it was wet in the can like usual but 15 minutes of air gave it the perfect moisture level. All I can say is wow Greg.....wow!

It took me a little courage to review this offering from G.L. Pease. But after finishing my 2oz tin, I am absolutely certain what my thoughts are about this wonderful blend. Normally I don't gravitate towards blends with latakia and I started smoking this blend with a very low expectation.
The blend comes in perfect moisture content. It says ribbon cut, but looks like broken flake to me. My first few bowls were nothing special. They were just typical smoky char like latakia flavor mostly, accompanied with a little interplay between sweet and sour taste. After a few bowls, once I got past the latakia, there was wonderful surprise for me. Delightful combination of bright and red Virginia comes forward with a little floral and spicy oriental note. This blend is sweet, not overly sweet, sour bur not overly sour. Loads of flavor with a spicy touch here and there from Perique. All of these flavors are playing with each other while latakia consistently makes it's presence known without disrupting any of the underlying tobacco flavors. I think this blend is made with the objective to force English haters to appreciate certain English blends. Goes very well with my morning coffee. Nicotine hit is medium. Burns cool, absolutely no tongue bite.
I consider this an all day smoke, and I tried this blend in hot summer month of August. After trying this blend I had to dedicate 3 more pipes to latakia blends, as I will definitely be trying more English offerings. A solid 4 out of 4 for me. Highly recommended for anyone regardless of your perspective towards latakia.

Well, against my best efforts, you just cannot make this blend bad.
I was thinking about some of the blends I have yet to review here, and to my surprise, I had not reviewed Chelsea Morning. Well, lets smoke a few bowls and give it a review. Not wanting to open a new tin I went to my cellar and found the jar I already had going. See, I am a tobacco explorer. The journey is the most exciting thing for me. While some pipers find a few blends they really like and smoke copious amounts, I have a severe case of tobacco ADHD. I am always distracted by a new blend, or I hear good things about one I have never tried. So it seems I have not smoked smoked much Chelsea Morning since 2013. Yup, my "newest" Chelsea Morning was from 2013.
Now in the pipe world, this is a great problem to have. How do you complain about having to smoke a blend with 9 years of age on it? This should be amazing right? Womp Womp. It seems that when I last smoked this blend some bits and pieces of tobacco, and as my luck would have it, a huge chunky stem piece, got in between the lid of the mason jar and I have a 9 year old jar of completely dried out crunchy Chelsea Morning. Well, I will rehydrate it, but just for funnsies......
A rather potent smell from the latakia and orientals on the tin note, but don't worry, the bite is not as strong as the bark. This is a chunky broken flake with various mottled coloring through.
Even though this was dry as a bone, it packed well, burned well, and smoked well. What a nice balanced and refined blend. I have always been a fan of Early Morning Pipe, but have to admit, this blend is a little more refined and sophisticated. It has more depth, and can make EMP seem kinda monotone.
The Virginias give a nice base, the orientals a nice sour (in a good way) tang, and the latakia is there, but definitely not in a super strong way. The perique gives me that nice tickle in the nose on the retrohale, and does add to the blend nicely.
So there you have it folks, this blend is really good. It is so good that 9 years of derelict storage cannot even hold you back.

Taste: One of my favorite blends. Easy to enjoy all day, but it holds your attention. Sweet Virginia and perique fig notes, combined with sour oriental spice. The Latakia is present, but never dominates. The cut really makes the composition shine. Slow burning, easy to load, smoke, and enjoy.

What has two thumbs and feels foolish about cellaring EMP deeply? This guy. I’m late to the party and quite regretful about it. Ribbons and small pieces of broken flake constitute this mixture. There was a sweet smoky aroma upon opening the tin that reminded me of the 2010 release of McClelland’s Anniversary. Over time this took on more of a smoky and plummy tone. This is lighter on Latakia than EMP, and the VA and orientals are riding in the front seat. GLP has concocted a Sweeter and less smoky EMP that is lighter in body, but so much more complex and refined.
There are dark espresso notes that are balanced by an incensey fragrant funk. It is simultaneously sour, musty, lightly sweet, and dare I say umami. Bites only if really abused. This is a perfect blend to both zone out, or really focus in, concentrate…if that makes any sense. Well done.

Wow, I love this blend. It’s spicy from the orientals and perique, with a nice fruity, smoky background. I love the cut, which can be easily rubbed out a bit further for more even, steady burn. No bite or ashy flavor even when a bit hasty with the smoke. Another example of Latakia being used as a light condiment with extraordinary success. The light smoke/leather background is stunning in the effect it has in adding depth to the Va’s and orientals. Forget the name and references to morning, this is a top shelf all day light Latakia blend. You could be vehemently opposed to Latakia, and find something to enjoy in Chelsea Morning. Won’t bludgeon your taste buds and spoil your tongue from appreciating any subsequent bowls of more delicate blends. Well done in this one, I will be rotating this with Squadron Leader when the mood is right for a bit of smoke/spice. If you’re a veteran or beginner, you can’t miss with this blend.

This was the second non brazilian tobacco I ever smoked and it became my favorite smoke by now. The tin smell is more latakia oriented, but when you lit the bowl this magically swifts into a sweet virginia base with a perfect dose of spicing in the head. Beautiful and complex with a nice pletora of flavours in each smoke.
The perfect dose of latakia and oriental spice and the not so sweet virginias makes this an awesome mild but not by any means bland or sugary smoke.

If i have one significant flaw with my palette It surely has to be my intolerance to latakia.. however.. as a condiment it doesn't always bother me and sometimes just works well in a blend.. Chelsea Morning is the type of virginia/oriental dominated English that I tend to go for.. the latakia is almost like an afterthought of smokiness in this blend.. the orientals and Virginia intermingle so nicely and the inclusion of perique gives a very perky and satisfying retrohale.. the whole experience is wonderful and clearly well blended as most pease blends are.. There is subtle fruitiness, creaminess, pleasant sour/sweetness and the hard to describe floral incense that orientals tend to provide.. an invigorating and pleasant blend.. and finally an English I can fully appreciate.

Nice tin note, burns well. There's a lot going on here, but there's an unpleasant bitterness that kind of drowns out the creamy/sweet/smoky parts. I'm hoping 6 months or a year will smooth it out and allow the components to mesh better as it's a little rougher than what I want in an English.
EDIT, 10/07/19: I'm smoking this blend in a MM Marcus. The bitterness is mostly gone, leaving behind the sweet/creamy smoky parts, and I'm enjoying it a lot more. Maybe it's the pipe, or my palate was off the last couple times I smoked it. I'm adding a star.

Chelsea Morning: A bright English blend
The Virginia varietals are primarily sweet, then tangy, with some grassy-bright notes. The Cyprian latakia comes next in flavors with its normal cedar-smokiness. I appreciate how Mr. Pease added enough latakia to hold your interest every puff, though it balances well with the Virginias and oriental leaf. The orientals add a pleasant dry quality and a little sourness to the smoke. There is a whisper of perique present, which adds a little complexity (specifically a fermented quality) to the blend. This is my favorite middle-of-the-road English blend. Usually, I find similar blends to lack depth or flavor, but Chelsea Morning can keep my interest.

This was the first tobacco I bought after reading reviews here. I concur with others who find this a tasty, interesting blend. I plan to always have it in my repertoire. I'm a newbie (see my profile), so I'll leave it at that.
Update, Aug. 20/19. This has become my favorite tobacco after trying 20 or so. When I can't decide what to load up, it never fails.

"Sweet red and bright Virginias, fragrant Orientals, a bit of rich Cyprus latakia, and just a pinch of perique" . . . "Zesty, smooth, full of flavour".
The above sums up Chelsea Morning perfectly. I cannot discern or detect any faults or flaws with this Pease blend. Impeccably unimpeachable. Highly recommended English/Balkan blend.

First off I'd like to say this was a very pleasant surprise compared to the other English blends I've smoked from the old London series. Unlike Meridian Gaslight Lagonda the Latakia is not as pronounced. At first light the first thing that jumped out at me was the red Virginia. There is a spiciness that seems always present . My pallet is not as refined as many of the other reviewers so I can't say if it's coming from the reds, orientals for the perique but it's always there except for the moments when I think the orientals really show themselves. Like I mentioned before the Latakia isn't as in your face but is always in the background and I find it a nice change of pace from the other blends in this series I've tried. I recommend this to any fan of the old London series and anyone how is looking for a more milder Latakia experience.

A phenomenal morning pipe tobacco that I enjoy anytime of the day. Light, tons a flavor and consistent throughout the entire bowl. You really taste each component, but some are more in the background than others. Has a Latakia smokiness, but not in a traditional way. It tends to be a bit lighter than other Latakia blends and more nuanced rather than right in your face. Has a wonderful creamy flavor that develops throughout the bowl. Almost like a heavy whipping cream when you pair it with a coffee. Not sure if that was planned by Greg (G.L. Pease), but it truly is delicious. I tend to be much more of a Virginia smoker, but this is my go-to morning Latakia based blend. In short, I can't say enough about the blend for what it is. 4 enthusiastic stars. Give it a try, I strongly doubt you'll regret it.

I've been looking for an early/all day English Blend for quite some time now. GLP's Quiet Nights is my go-to English as the sun gets lower in the sky, but with a morning cup, it can be a bit much. I'm not a huge fan of the "other" Morning blend, so when I came across Chelsea Morning, it sounded like it might check all of the boxes and so I put my order in and anxiously awaited what could be my all-day English blend to arrive.
Upon opening the tin, the Latakia is apparent, but subdued. Which I considered a good thing. The Virginias were more on the fresh hay/citrus spectrum, and I thought that would be great for a smoke early in the morning.
The cut is a chunky ribbon, but easy enough to pack and light. The mechanics are spot on and I have no issues smoking it down to the heel with little or no relights.
The taste. Here is where things get a little...complicated. In the right pipe, this blend is astounding. Sweet, fragrant and complex with flavors and aromas of incense, citrus, honey and spice. However, in the wrong pipe, it leans towards harsh and acrid, and you get none of the sweet Virginia flavors to balance out some of the more assertive condiment tobaccos.
I have found that I need to smoke this in a pipe with a tall, narrow bowl rather than a wide, shallow bowl. I like most of my English blends in wide open bowls in order to taste all of the component leaves, but I like to smoke my Virginia blends in taller bowls that let the sweeter leaves shine and let the condiment leaves play a supporting role. Because Chelsea Morning is such a complex blend, but still relies on the Virginias as its foundation, I treat it more as a Virginia blend rather than an English.
Once I figured out this little idiosyncrasy, I have really enjoyed the blend. And I dare say that if you aged this blend for a year or two, it would be a transcending experience as an all day smoke.
I will say that I get more nicotine off of this blend that some others, so I generally like to have something in my stomach in the morning before lighting it up.
Overall, I really like the blend and enjoy it very much. I docked it a star simply because it is so finicky about the type of pipe that it prefers. Sometimes the ideal pipe is not ready in the rotation, so that eliminates Chelsea Morning from the lineup for that day. However, I still recommend trying it and possibly aging it to see if that rounds out some its persnickety characteristics as the Virginias continue to age and sweeten.

G. L. Pease - Chelsea Morning
This one strikes me as similar to C&D's Plantation Evening although here the flavors are more melded together, likely by a difference of processing. A lighter english blend where the different flavors tend towards mild but certainly not boring. There is some creaminess and spice but often the mouthfeel strikes me as dusty, but not in a bad way. A good english blend at a time when you may not want a hard core latakia blast or oriental blast. Pretty well balanced. It can turn a bit ashy in the bottom half, I think going at it too hard may be a contributing factor there. The particular cut lends well to smoldering rather than all out combustion so these bowls tend to last awhile. It is a blend that can show you different nuances of flavor and mouthfeel at different times, probably also owing to it's cut. Despite being a worthy and high quality blend, I don't feel particularly strongly about this one. But it's worth three stars at the least.

Edit: 10/28/19 I’ve decided to rewrite my review entirely. Chelsea Morning has become one of my favorite morning blends, paired with a cup of black coffee. The cut is quite rough and uneven, but I only rarely rub it out or break the larger chunks into smaller pieces. I’ve found it smokes best in a medium/large bowl, being careful not to pack two tightly. It offers notes of ripe fruit, deep plum and raisin, accompanied by a bit of hay, woody orientals, rounded out with creamy, smoky Latakia and a healthy pinch of pepper spice. The deep fruit notes of the Virginias working in tandem with the plummy, peppery Perique is what really sets this blend apart. Delicious. Highly recommended.

I've really come to enjoy this blend, though it wasn't "love at first puff."
In the tin, the aroma that comes through is mellow (which shouldn't be mistaken for mild). There is the stewed dark fruit that you'd expect, plus some tang and smokiness from the oriental and latakia leaf. The cut itself is hard to pin down - chunkier and less uniform than a ribbon, but certainly finer and less chunky than a broken flake. This can make it a bit of a challenge to pack perfectly, but paying a little extra attention to that makes it easy enough.
As I said, this was not love at first puff. Immediately after cracking the tin and packing a bowl it was very disappointing. I couldn't understand the hype - I got an early whiff of latakia which become largely flavorless and by the time I was 1/4 of the way through the bowl it was like I was smoking cardboard with a hint of perique.
Then I let it sit in the tin (lid on, but not in an air tight mason jar) for a few days. Letting it breathe just that little bit changed everything. The next bowl was everything it promised to be - sweet Viriginias with some tangy oriental coming through every now and then, latakia added the light smokiness I was hoping for, and perique that was doing all of those magical things that perique does to a blend.
For me, the perique built up steadily throughout the bowl - quietly adding a dark, stewy-ness to the smoke early on, and becoming much more pronounced and peppery by the end of the bowl.
Will this before everyone? Probably not. But, if you tend to enjoy the lighter "breakfast" latakia blends (Early Morning Pipe being the obvious example) and also like a little perique in your diet, I can't imagine this would miss the mark.

This blend is an English Style delight. It is an English blend that is robust, without being overwhelming the latakis, and the orientals delight, with the perique making a cameo appearance as the bowl is smoke to the end . Delightful in every way, I enjoy it every time I smoke it.

Purchased a tin about a year ago. Stuck it in my pipe cabinett and forgot about it. While doing some reorganization found it and tried it. The aroma in the tin was fantastic - I could smell the perique. It was a little damp so I set it out overnight to dry. Lightly rubbed it out with my fingers and stuffed in my pipe. To my delight this stuff is really good. Burned well and was tasty all the way to the bottom. I was doing some sail repair and smoked it while outside in the cockpit - didn't have that grassy taste a lot of virginia based tobaccos do when smoked out of doors. Definitely will get put on my "approved" list. For a similar comparison - Frogmorton on the Bayou is close.

I did not like this at all. The cut was interesting.... I could rub it out a bit if I felt like it, it burnt a bit better that way. The smell was pretty bad, the taste was just flat and 'cardboardy'. I tried many different pipes, but I just didn't get it. I did like the nicotine level, it seemed just right. The room note was a bit ordinary, bordering on offensive.
If this was the only tobacco left on earth, I could smoke it, but I certainly will not be buying more.

Chelsea Morning now vies with Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe (of which I've got just a little left) for my go-to morning smoke. The difference is that I smoke CM at any time of the day. I can't tell you what's so right about this blend that made it shoot to the top of the English list, but I will just say: perfect balance of elements that are imho among the most difficult to balance well, even satisfactorily. CM pulled the English/Balkan blends back into my rotation when I was about to declare my excursion into Virginias and VaPer a permanent proposition. I still love VAs and VaPers, but now I've got enough CM to ensure that it will remain a fixture in my rotation. So, balance gave me balance.

I had high hopes for Chelsea Morning and ordered an 8oz can from 4Noggins solely on the positive reviews here. First impressions, while seldomly accurate, were a bit disappointing for me as I could taste quite a lot of a liqorice/anise flavour added to the blend, which lingered in the mouth for quite a long time. On top of that, it was stronger than expected but did not have a lot of body. But the presentation is immaculate, nicely rubbed out pressed tobacco and I feel it will improve if left alone for a while. So this I will do and report in a few months time.

I found this blend to be a little rough. Definitely a benefactor of the Pease mystique. Morning smoke? Way too rough for that. Others have stated that it's too young and needs some age but still gave it four stars, again Pease mystique at work, I mean really, it can't be both. Westminster is a way better smoke, morning, noon or night.

A previous reviewer said this blend sings and I couldn't agree more. I dicovered it by accident. I was in Barclay Pipe and Tobacco in Columbus recently and a fellow there, knowing I'd smoked Early Morning Pipe and several other English blends years ago, suggested I try it. I've since become primarily a Virginia or Virginia-Burley smoker, but this blend has all the attributes that could change that.
It is a marvelous smoke with rich taste and aroma. It smokes without a bite to a medium gray ash and is one of the few blends in my over 50 years as a pipe smoker that leaves me wanting more. For those of you who might remember Rattray's Red Rapparee of the 1970s and before, you will find it similar but perhaps a bit richer. Highly recommended.

At first opening, I get mostly the fruit & fig note from the Virginia and Perique. The latakia is barely present. Moisture is good, but can use a little dry time. The Virginia and touch of latakia come through when first lighting. The perique with it's peppery and figgy flavor, slowly takes over and seems to be dominant for the 2nd half of the bowl. Has a few harsh edges here and there.
While I do enjoy CM, for me it's not quite on the level of the other two Pease blends from this morning, noon, & night series (Meridian and Quiet Nights). Still, recommended for just about any piper, unless you do not like perique.

Lovely balance of subtle smoke from the Latakia and a firm, beautiful, nuanced flavor from the orientals. Out of the tin, I first got a bit of Latakia but on further investigation I found scents of dark fruit, nutmeg and cinnamon. This is not a sweet blend in the pipe; there is sweetness but it is a perfect foil to the savory nature of the oriental. Fantastic room note. It has been years since I smoked Frog Morton AtP but this reminded me of it, just a bit sweeter. Rocketed up to my favorite blend, it is not too strong in taste or nicotine, but just perfectly done. I could smoke this all day.

To give you a hint from where my below impressions are coming from; I favor aromatic blends (vanilla being my favorite), although I am finding I enjoy English/Scottish blends more frequently, which I could not stand when I first started smoking a pipe. I have been trying more of the English/Aromatic combo blends, which I have found being more and more of that I am reaching for for my everyday smoke
Opening the tin I smelled the Lakita right off the bat, it was not overwhelming but the strongest note.
The flavor I tasted was the Lakita with some pepper, it was a nice strength surprisingly mild after smelling the tin note. I was expecting this to be very similar to EMP, but I find it a fuller smoke both in taste and body.
It arrived semi-dry, so no drying time was needed. Was able to light this without issue and hardly any relights. I did not have any tounge-bite with this blend.

The moisture level is perfect right out the tin. The Red Virginia’s are more upfront than I was expecting, and it ramps up in flavor, and strength pretty quick. It kinda tastes like Carolina Red Flake mixed with Presbyterian Mixture. I can see this being a favorite among the Va/Per fans. For me, it’s a little stronger than I prefer, and it tends to bite me. I’ll occasionally grab for this in the Fall, but other that that, it stays in the cellar.

Chelsea Morning is nicely presented in a coarse broken flake and requires little drying time. Sweet grassy Golden Virginias and fruity red Virginias are contrasted by fragrant and buttery and spicy Orientals which are most likely Samsun and Izmir. Cyprin Latikia adds just enough smoke and wood to nicely ground the blend. Perique is light and adds it’s deep fruity notes and black pepper. Smokes to a clean ash with few relights needed and leaves little moisture in the bowl. Leaves a pleasant finish on the palate. Rich and flavorful enough to pair with a robust medium roast coffee, Chelsea Morning engages and awakens the senses.

This is much more than just a morning smoke. My tin is new. Tin note is rich but muddled. The bowl starts off wonderfully, with the orientals complimenting the Virginia’s in a unusual but very tasty way. This is Virginia forward at this point. Latakia is in the background, but still there. Mild/medium. Midway through the bowl, it transforms into a spicy, sweet, creamy smoke, with a tiny note of coco or coffee coming through on the retro. Amazingly complex. Blend really meshes together now. Easily pushing medium body. The last 15 minutes it transforms again. The Latakia and perique are more forward. The Virginia is slightly washed out now. The orientals fade also, but the body is now medium pushing full. Very earthy at the end with a pleasent spicy mushroom flavor taking over. Still smoking cool with lots of smoke output. Still giving wonderful flavors on the retro. Meduim plus in the nicotine department also. This is an impressive, complicated smoke that I will be ordering many more tins of. Not your run of the mill English. Bravo, Mr Pease. Classic.

I was looking to augment my usual morning tobacco (Savinelli "Essenza Cipriota"). I find this to be a great blend. I read many reviews of many, many tobaccos when I came upon "Chelsea Morning". Ha Ha. It even has "morning" in the name. I decided to give it a try. Well, now I have another morning blend. Smooth and tasty. Perfect with a cup of coffee. Notes of spice, cinnamon, and an almost citrus quality danced on my tongue. This is most definitely recommended for someone who is looking for a nice smoke when the sun comes up. Yummy!

Excellent tobacco! It reminds me of some of my favorite Oriental blends, with soft leathery notes on the tongue (but this time accented by a bit of cool-smoking Latakia), and just enough nicotine to give an infrequent smoker like myself a little buzz when a full bowl is smoked.
Milder blends like these, made from high quality tobacco, tend to age very gracefully in my experience. Can't wait to try some after a few years time!

My 2oz tin did not have any internal paper parceling (manufacturing hickup?) and was also a bit drier than I like. The tin note is fabulous and the cut looks great - though not necessary the best for packing/smoking. This blend is largely (bright) Virginia based with a smattering of Latakia and Oriental tobaccos and a touch of Perique. The blend lit and smoked well with a mild but tasty flavor with a subtle topping of some sort Those looking for a rich full flavored tobacco will will find this one a touch mild. Further, the Virginias appear to be quite young, so this blend will certainly improve with age.

The components of this blend come together quite nicely. This might just be the best English blend out there. This is another great blend from Mr Pease that I will keep in stock. You really can't go wrong with it. The nicotine level is just right and the moisture level, even at the opening of the tin, is just perfect for lighting up. Highly recommended.

From a 3-year-old tin, Chelsea Morning falls firmly on the Va/Or end of English blends. The Lat is very understated, which works on a blend like Dunhill Early Morning Pipe because of the quality and balance of the Virginia and the subtle application of the Orientals.
Subtlety was never G.L. Pease's strong suit. The Orientals are sour and unbalanced - they would require either a better VA presence or a good deal more Latakia to balance them out. The Perique, when it is evident, doesn't help with the overall sour flavor.
Chelsea Morning may appeal to fans of strong Turkish-forward blends, but otherwise it makes for a nasty morning smoke that doesn't hold a candle to EMP or any other mild English breakfast blend. Skip this in favor of benchmark mild Englishes.

I think what sells me on most Pease tobaccos is Greg's evocative tin descriptions and blend names. As a coffee addict, when a blender adds "morning" to a blend name and makes statements like "it's a great bowl to accompany the morning cup," I can't very well stay away. "Chelsea Morning" made me think of a Joni Mitchell song lost back in the late 60's somewhere, I had to get over that. Being that the series is called "Old London" I have to assume that this Chelsea is referring to Chelsea, London which at one time had a reputation as London's bohemian quarter, the haunt of artists, radicals, painters and poets. So with that kind of a name I tried to pick apart Greg's brain. I believe he was going for a type of morning blend that we've all become familiar with, but as the name suggests a morning blend with much complexity. In the tin it has a rich and strong smell of leather and maybe the smallest hint of dark fruits. The process used to marry all these flavors together makes a difference I'm sure, but it does make packing the pipe a bit contrary. I have to pick apart a lot of the ribbon flakes and find a bowl large enough to accommodate, but its undoubtedly worth the hassle. Once lit it's a slow burning affair with billows of fluffy white clouds that have an almost incense like aroma to those around you. The taste as aforementioned is very complex. Its a very strong tasting tobacco without being overwhelming. Some sweetness and spice and a creaminess to the latakia (this description always intrigues me). It changes often and is hard to put in to words. In the end I can honestly say that yes, it does go well with the morning cup and I have a feeling it will be a mainstay around my place for years to come.

This is the blend where I figured out that Pease is making tobacco for a different pipe smoker than me. I mean holy crap, what were you doing the night before that this blend "shines its brightest" with your morning coffee?
I can imagine the blender spending all night tossing and turning with a raging nic fit and then pouring this into a pipe first thing. Maybe it would be better to adapt the alcoholic's technique and keep a tin of Nightcap on your bedstand to take care of the 3am shakes, and then blend an appropriate morning mixture.
Chelsea Morning tastes pretty good, but it's light for its power. I don't want to smoke this stuff early, and later in the day would rather have a blend that's got a little more Latakia flavor to it - hey that's the first time anyone has criticized a Pease blend for not having enough Latakia, isn't it? I'm also not quite sure where the Perique is supposed to fit in, it seems really out of place.
Maybe this is Jose Mourinho's Chelsea Morning now that he's unemployed, but the rest of us can't go back to bed to sleep off the nicotine haze. Two stars, I'm sure it's great for addicts.

I'll revisit this in a few months to see how it ages/agrees with my tastes before deciding if I'm going to cellar some. For some reason the Pease that contains Perique & Latikia seem odd. The exception being Quiet Nights, I've cellared 7 of the 1/2 pound tins, absolutely love that stuff. (Monster sale, $24 per tin). CM is certainly far better than EMP, which I quit after slugging through a single tin not much there. Abingdon, Triple Play, Sextant, Gaslight, & Westminster all solidly made my rotation. The Pease that agrees with my palate are wonderful tobaccos.

This is a very high quality tobacco, with a deep creaminess and a spicey top note nicely blended. The thick ribbons can make it slightly difficult to light, and care is needed to get it smoking nicely. Once lit properly it produces a wonderful blend of spice and creaminess, the spicey note gradually disappearing. After a few smokes this one becomes quite moreish and puts many other tobaccos to shame. I personally think it's slightly too strong for an early morning smoke, but during the rest of the day and in the evening it's a real pleasure. The smoking experience and taste is addictive, and I find myself reaching for the tin again almost as soon as a pipeful has been finished. This is a wonderful, complex and satisfying smoke.

This is my first GL Pease blend, a blender that I have had much anticipation to try. I have to say that I have never been more surprised with a tobacco as related to what the description of the tin says. I could not smell any Latakia on the tin note, to me it smells like a typical VaPer. It also smokes like a VaPer, however the orientals are dominant along with the perique. There was really no hint of latakia while smoking it either. The flavor and nicotine level were both quite strong and enjoyable. I think this blend would be more enjoyed by fans of perique rather than someone looking for a traditional English blend. Over all a nice blend.

Chelsea morning; the little sister to Quiet nights. Where quiet nights is anything but quiet(in my opinion great for parties and get togethers) This is a mild English, and just as the name states, this blend is good for the quiet and slower moments of life. The latakia is not the bold latakia of Brebbia #9, but a much milder leaf. Has a rich earthy smell in the tin. This gets excellent with age and 1-2 years is highly recommended.

Upon opening the tin, there was a strong smell that was slightly unpleasant, but that may be because this tin was aged almost 2years. I rubbed it out a little bit more and it's texture was fairly easy in the hands. It packed quite nicely. I smoked it in my new (to me) Bjarne Danish freehand. It lit quite easily, and the first puff was full of nice strong flavors. I could tell that it had Latakia and Perique in it immediately (which I enjoy). The bowl stayed lit the whole bowl. The taste on my tongue was rich and flavorful, pleasant and tasty. I would recommend this blend to anyone who likes blends with Latakia.

The component tobaccos in Chelsea Morning work together brilliantly. They don't blend so much as harmonize. The Izmir and latakia in particular work together to produce a taste that is almost candy-like (Smarties?), especially early in the bowl. And the dash of perique gives a soft bass note rather than peppery spice.
Like a great wine, this blend has a tight, yet complex, structure. About mid-bowl you start to get some really nice cocoa or cigar-like notes that surprise without overwhelming.
Great stuff. Should age well, too.

Revised Review 5/22/12-A smooth, Savory Balkan but light on flavor and "N"' . I've been smoking this back to back with "Meridian" and I feel Meridian is a more flavorful smoke , however, "M" is not as smooth as CM. . The Orientals , Latakia and Perique all add some interest and are well balanced , maybe to much so. I get the creaminess and some of the fruitiness from the description. I agree with those that say this is a nice blend for the morning coffee, it's not a wowing guitar solo but rather a steady base fiddle. I'm tempted to give 4 stars, but under MY rating system , this gets a 3 and Meridian gets the 4, but I really can't disagree with reviewers, "DK 05/28/2011", or Katharsis 07/06/2011 . I feel Piccadilly is a better morning smoke for me as I like the ribbon cut and the higher "N".
This is one of Greg's mildest and lease flavorful Balkan blends as it ages ( 4 years cellar time).

This has replaced Dunhill Early Morning Pipe as my first smoke of the day. It is absolutely perfect with a cup of coffee, and I swear it even tastes like coffee. Nice and mild but not so mild that I end up puffing madly for flavor. I love to smoke this in a small Dunhill and sip it very slowly while I compose my thoughts for the day. It has just the right nicotine kick to get me going without making me feel dizzy. Absolutely splendid!

VapPer lovers will love this English, as it is a milder English with a strong Virginia and Perique backbone. The Perique is present often with the Virginias. It is a lovely, complex blend with a slight nicotine kick for those who want that (I usually don't; when I want a slight-to-medium buzz, though, from a complex VaPer,this is a great choice). The Orientals and Latakia often take a back seat, but are occasionally present. It smokes well in my pot-shaped pipes.
Calling it a mild English is a bit misleading, as it is a kind of hybrid between a complex VaPer and a mild English. It can definitely be an all day smoke, especially for VaPer lovers. The muted Latakia and Orientals certainly are there, but in a restrained fashion, hence the preference for this as a morning smoke for English lovers. I'd give it four stars as an outstanding blend in its own, unique category of a complex mild English with a strong VaPer foundation.
I like my English blends these days to lean less on a strong VaPer base, with more harmonious Latakias and Orientals present, so I personally only rate this a three star blend. But that's my own, current preference. Within its genre, it is truly outstanding. A master blend.

Love it.
This is not EMP but you can taste some similarities. It's stronger than EMP as a first thing in the day smoke due to the great vaper backbone but it is well balanced. Of the 6 or 7 bowls i smoke a day, either this or EMP start things off. Yummo!

Tin: Sweet; essence of wheat from the VA, and an herbal incense from the orientals. A broken cake, which is a partially rubbed out cake. Mixture of mostly brown, with flecks of blonde. Date stamp on bottom of tin: 061611(June 16, 2011).
Packing & Burning: It does not stay lit very well. It had to be packed tightly, to achieve this. The chunky shape of the partially rubbed cake is partly the reason for this. But a bowl lasts a long while.
Taste & Aroma: Soft and smooth, the oriental presenting a moderate, sweet, herbal essence. Down the bowl, it develops a darker light chocolate-butterscotch taste. The orientals have a green tang to them, like grass, that has been mentioned as due to lack of age, or immaturity.
Overall: Reminded of Robert McConnell's Oriental. CM does not have as strong an oriental taste, just some what subdued. The cut gives a problem in handling and packing.

I don't really get the concept of a "morning blend"... any blend that is smokeable works in the morning for me. Still this one does perform nicely with the morning cup. And any other time of day too, go figure. I appreciate the use of the latakia as a condiment here, and a conservative one at that, just enough that you know it's there. This is a well married blend of components woven into a broadcloth whole...um, by which I mean you tend to taste the blend more often than it's parts. Overall I would describe it as neutral in taste with a slight lean towards sweet. Occasionally I catch a taste of red virginia, but the main flavor I get is from orientals, which I would guess to be izmir and possibly some amount of dubec. Towards the bottom the perique spice comes on more, as does the nicotine...oh the nicotine...sometimes towards the heel I'm left wondering if I accidentally dropped some G&H rope in the bottom before I filled the rest of the bowl. Another great one from the House of Pease and presently my favorite english blend.

This blend has wonderful depth and complexity - the flavors complement each other and it is not a boring smoke by any stretch. It evolves and feels like a drive through the countryside as the flavors unfold. Nicotine is a bit on the strong side for my taste - makes me salivate which usually only happens with the stronger blends - and I'm surprised that most ranked its strength mild-to-medium and medium. If you like it on the stronger side this is high quality and could be just your ticket.
Update 11/23/2016: I recently got a tin of 'Quiet Nights' from this series and the flavor profile reminded me (pleasantly), of the nutty / malty flavors I get in Chelsea Morning. Going to get my hands on some more of it. Both very fine blends.

This is an excellent blend by G.L. Pease of quality tobaccos. The taste is good and pleasant. I love the sweet aroma when I sniff the pipe as I smoke this blend. Sweet Virginias are great and the Orientals are not over done. After smoking the first top portion of the bowl the Virginias come out and the latakia adds to the fullness. Room note is acceptable and not over powering like some English blends can be to the non smoker. No Bite during the smoke and no harshness at the bottom of the bowl. I prefer Chelsea Morning over my Dunhill Early Morning Pipe blend by Dunhill. Similar to EMP but richer, sweeter and has more body. I have put some up for aging and can't wait to see the improvements.

Pop the top to find a pleasant English aroma with nice latakia tones, on top of the funky, ripe cheese of earthy Perique. The balance of aromas is amazing. Tangy, smoky, savory, delicious scents blend flawlessly in the tin aroma of Chelsea Morning.
Packs nice - rub it out just a little, burns well.
Sweet Virginia background supports the smoky tar of the Latakia, and the very nice subtle floral flavors of the Orientals. The Perique is faint in the smoke, but the effect it has on this already fine medium English blend is balancing and warming. New leather, cigar boxes, feed grain and creosote. I find this stuff very satisfying. It's cool and damn tasty.
Another favorite for my list. Masterfully Done !

This along with Piccadilly, another blend from Pease, are among my favorite blends to smoke in the mid morning with a cup of coffee, although I will just as easily smoke this one at night. It has a nice leathery tin not upon cracking the seal, and the smoke is best described I think as a wonderful interplay of VA and Latakia with a hint of Perique. I really enjoyed this blend and smoked my first tin straight through within a few weeks even while I had a set of samplers from a mailout to get through. This blend was an instant classic for me, try it with a good cup of strong jo, you won't be disappointed!
This has become a long standing favorite of mine, it is my #1 go to tobacco, I have never bought an 8oz tin for myself until now, and this is the one, I never want to run out of Chelsea Morning and if all the other blends disappeared and I could only stock up on one, I would be content to smoke this for the rest of my life by itself.

I loved it! just lack the nic kick a little. Very similar to GLP Westminster with the smokey burnt smell in the tin and the room note. And as suggested it great with the morning cup. You do have to let this baby dry though as it can come a little to moist (probably give it extra shelf/cellar life?) I leave what I need out the night before to ensure she's right to play the game. Tin note is earthy mushrooms in a camp fire with a bitter tinge. A difficult light even when dried for an hour prior to packing. Once it does catch you find nothing of the sweet, fruity, or creamy from the description--instead, a harsh smoke that feels a bit out of balance. Nothing remarkable or memorable about the experience The hype on this one is questionable though I recognize this is all just personal taste. For my part, I recommend passing on this blend.

I've been reading that this goes well with the morning cup so I had to try it, given that is my favorite smoke of the day. That being said, I agree that it's a good smoke on a cool/cold morning with that hot cup. I really like that I could still taste the quality red virginia and with some time in the cellar perhaps the latakia will soften a bit and the virginias will sweeten a little more, and I believe they will... Gotta have that virginia in the morning... Looking forward to this after a few years in the cellar... Great blend

After several tries, I have decided that I can't really smoke this blend. That's not to say that it is a bad blend. The many many positive reviews should tell you that this is good stuff. I have just never done well with perique. I think that chemically, I don't agree with it. I knew that this blend contained perique when I ordered it, but I wanted very badly to try it anyway.
After a few months the blend has gotten noticeably smoother. However, it still doesn't agree with me. If you are not usually a fan of blends with perique, this one will probably not be for you either.
Greg Pease makes great tobaccos. He makes my all time favorite blend. This one just isn't for me.

I too have to compare this against Early Morning Pipe. It is a bit stronger than EMP. For me it can be smoked all day, whereas EMP was more of a morning bowl. First bowl from the tin was good, but it did not live up to the reviews I had read. I followed the advice to leave the tin open to dry and YES the difference was what lead me to give this the 4 star rating. I recommend this especially to those that were fans of the Dunhill Early Morning Pipe and the early Murray's blend of Early Morning Pipe.

The balence of Latakia, Orientals, VA/Per is perfect. I agree it is a good morning smoke but can be enjoyed all day. This is one of my favorite blends and have already started to cellar a few tins. I usully now add a few tins in each m order to stash away for a rainy day. When I want a bit more latakia I like the Quite Nights but this is in m estimation the best of the GLP line...and that says alot since GLP is my favorite blender.

Well, it's a shame that some people apparently come on just to trash a brand that puts out a quality tobacco like this, which ultimately blocks a 4 star rating. Fortunately, all of the facts are presented on this site, so you can see that the reviewer who gave the one star rating below has rated 8 Pease tobaccos an average of 1.62 stars, while he rated 10 McClelland tobaccos an average of 3.8 stars. Hmmmmm. Oh well. I like McClelland tobaccos too by the way. I just hate to see a strong bias destroy overall ratings for any given tobacco. People who don't like aromatics shouldn't rate aromatics, people who don't like english blends shouldn't rate english blends, and people who don't enjoy a particular brand shouldn't rate that brand.
Now, as for the other low reviews, I can see where they might be disappointed. Nothing suits everyone. However, speaking for myself, I can only echo the many other 4 star reviews. This tobacco, with a cup of coffee, makes for a great start to the day.
I'll just add that in the days when tobaccos by Esoterica, Dunhill and Samuel Gawith were easily available, for reasons I can't explain, I was determined to avoid tobaccos by what I considered nontraditional producers (such as G.L. Pease). I finally gave in and tried some Pease products. Yes, I still miss Penzance and others, but exploring the Pease range has added a lot of fun to my smoking experience. Thanks Greg!

As i'm an early bird and wake-up before anyone at home i have a good hour before waking up my wife. So in all this loneliness i have the time to smoke this very well balanced blend every morning for the last 2 months.
Before writing this review i smoked all the content of an 8 oz tin.
Well, what more can i say than to tell you i love this blend and to read the description on the tin because it is spot on.
While i do understand why it's supposed to be smoked in the morning , i do find it a great evening blend as well especially after dinner in a large bowl.
The latakia is not strong just a hint to let you remember it's there and the VA are very well balanced and sweet to let you satisfied ,taste wise as well as nicotine strenght. With that said don't expect a nicotine bomb because it's really not but rather a satisfying strenght.

Chelsea Morning is a very good blend. Right out of the tin it was a bit moist and smoked rather steamy, masking the incredible flavors it contains. Letting it dry overnight (just leave the lid off the tin or spread it out on a plastic bag) made all the difference in the world. Dried out a bit, this blend is one of the best mild-medium English blends I have ever smoked. It is a smooth, creamy smoke, probably due to the pressing process used for this blend. The Virginias range from toasty caramel-custrard-like flavors to very slightly citrusy flavors. The orientals are faintly woody and slightly herbal, and the latakia provides an ever so slight smokiness to the blend. I don't sense the perique playing much of a role in this blend, maybe a hint of sour pepperiness that really gets lost in the Virginia and oriental goodness. Overall, this is a fantastic English blend which I can smoke all day long. This blend doesn't need to be aged at all, and I haven't done so yet nor might never do so because it is so good as is.
Update: Having gotten around to smoking some of the new Dunhill Early Morning Pipe, I must say that Pease's Ashbury and Chelsea Morning are far superior in every way, better quality and better tasting orientals and Virginias all round, and perfectly spiced with latakia.

I really, really like Chelsea Morning, Greg Pease's recent addition to the "morning pipe" competition. The broken flake burns cool to a white ash, without any bite. The Virginias, Orientals and Latakia are well balanced to produce a harmonious lighter English, perfect with a strong cup of coffee. CM is a great way to start a weekend morning. Recommended.

My first tin contained much more than just a "bit" of Latakia, with the Latakia dominating the scent at the opening of the tin and running the show throughout the pipes. Although this may be a bit milder than some, it is still a Latakia/English blend and nothing else.
My second tin had an overwhelming flowery scent to the smoke. The smoke actually tasted like it was laced with baby powder, you know, the scent of Johnson & Johnson's baby powder, sometimes called a "Lakeland essence." Whether this is some weird topping or the subtle fruitiness and fragrant Orientals of the tin description, I can not tell. But it is a real turn-off. I only kept smoking it because my wife loves the room note, and the sweet perfume scents lessen as the tin is exposed to air.
Tried it with my morning coffee, but I think it is also fine with port wine or beer in the evening.
Mr. Pease's accomplishment is that at least four different tobaccos are evident during the smoke. It is one of his typical blends where there is something for everyone, complex and multiple flavors throughout the pipe.
I recommend it without reservation for those who love English blends and Latakia, and a good mild English blend for the Virginia or burley smoker.
Update, Fall, 2010:
After 3 months of mellowing in an opened and then shut tin, just the plastic lid on it, this tobacco is a totally different experience.
3 months after exposure to the air, the Latakia recedes into the background, the supersweet Virginias come to the forefront, and the whole experience is less harsh. The Perique and Orientals are barely there. It has become an easy smoke. The disparity in taste from tin to tin is what keeps me from giving a fourth star.

I have been smoking "Good Morning" by C&D (which I think was also blended by Greg Pease. I find the Chelsea Morning a little stronger with a great taste. It does work well with a cup of coffee for me! First portion of the bowl was not as flavorful as I expected, but it seems to mature as you go down the bowl. About 1/2 way through - I don't want it to end. Very smooth creamy smoke. I have not smoked EMP so don't know how it compares to this, but I really like this smoke. You could certainly smoke this one all day, but I will stick with this as my morning smoke.
This tobacco packs easily and lights easliy as well. Most of the time I can smoke a bowl without having to re-light. I still like the C&D Good Morning a little better, but plan to keep some of each in my rotation. I did not experience any bite with this tobacco, but do take my time and smoke slowly. I think this one goes down as another great tobacco! I love the room note...so much that with my finished pipe sitting by me - I am motivated to load her up again.

(I purchased a tin of this yesterday afternoon. I have had one bowl from a new cob, and I was driving at 70 mph at the time, so you slow smokers might find some different notes. I'm always doing something when I smoke, though, so my experience was normal.)
The Virginias were very nice -- not too bright or sweet, although I experienced a bit of tongue bite. The Latakia is very lightly applied, but it is noticeable. You can tell that he threw it in just to give the blend some depth, and it performs that task masterfully. I've never been good at pinpointing Oriental tobaccos, but I believe they rounded out the tobacco nicely with a fullness of sorts. I would classify the perique as playing a role similar to a bagpipe's drone -- necessary to the composition.
The cut is a ribbon/broken flake hybrid. It packed into a cob rather evenly, but it was difficult to initially light with a book-style matches. Take the lighting slowly, and you'll be rewarded with extraordinary flavor from the beginning (although what I believe I know about Oriental tobacco reinforced itself in pungency).
The note was great. As I said, I smoked it in my car on the interstate, so the smoke didn't linger, but what I could smell was great -- a nice, man cave scent that says, "I smoke high-quality tobacco, and I enjoy smelling like it." My wife hates Latakia, which she was able to distinguish.
Chelsea Morning had nice punch to it, although I hadn't eaten in six hours, and I'm a relative lightweight.
I would rate it 3.75 stars out of 4 stars, with the caveat that my experience wasn't optimal.

I tried this blend as a result of the reviews on this site. It did not dissapoint. I do have to say the first two bowls I had almost turned me away from this blend. They were lacking anything I look for in a good smoke. Being a fan of other G.L. Pease blends, I set it aside for a few days and finally gave it another try. I"m not sure what had change (maybe just my mood), but it surely became an enjoyable smoke. Delicate and smooth is how I would describe this blend. To me it delivers more at the midpoint and end of the bowl. A blend I will recommend and continue to enjoy in the future.

I love this stuff. I bought it after trying several other GL Pease products. It is a nice flavorful blend. Don't puff to hard or it will bite you, but all do and normally it is my fault. On the can it says it is good with coffee, but I have found it is good with just about everything. I do get a lot of the flavors, the sweetness, and just enough spice to keep it interesting. I normally smoke it in a middle sized Peterson dedicated to English blends. When my can runs out I will be buying more.
Give it a try! Enjoy, Z

I recently purchased my first tin of this due to the high volume of recommendations. I smoked it out of a pipe that I used with my Captain Black Cherry flavored tobacco. It was absolutely horrible. I smoked it twice and continued to have the same outlook. I then bought a new pipe after reading that the tobacco you smoke out of it stays, so to speak. After I smoked Chelsea morning in the new pipe, I fell in love. I absolutely adore it. Excellent taste, superb smell and an after taste that isn't too harsh on the pallet. Highly recommended.

Edit April 13, 2010:
I know, "smoke it slow for better flavor", but it is a MUST for CM. The flavor is totally different. If a large amount of smoke is a must for you when smoking, I think you'll miss out on a great one of a kind tobacco. I have also found lighter packing to help also bring out the oriental nuances of CM.
original review March 5, 2010:
Complex is an understatement!
This has a beautiful flavor throughout. I can not tell you that the first third is this and the middle is that...it seems way to complex for that, to me. I sense, what I believe, as a blend playing together as well as anyone could hope for in a blend. The individual components could not be moved one little bit or the whole sum would be "off". This is what I believe makes this a true artisan blend.
Complexity. Does that mean that the parts must weave in and out and say “I'm virgina and oriental leaf or I'm Latakia” and then move away in mystery; components singing alone and switching back-and-forth throughout the smoke? Or does it mean that each of the parts make a perfect combination that gives you a wonderful smoke from start to finish that cannot be described? This blend is the latter.
Smokiness is always deep in the background, but always present and the “rest” meld so wonderfully that I have no idea which component I taste! It took me a while to accept this as fact but now that I have, I understand truly how complex a blend may be.
What is going to be in the coming years as this ages? What I can tell you is that it will probably be an almost magical transformation from deeply complex to deeply complex and…I have no idea what can become of Chelsea Morning.
Complexity has a price. It takes much longer to “find” the blend. We could miss out on a gem if not given the right time. Some of us don't want to devote a lot of effort to a tobacco, and there is nothing wrong there. But please, if it's not easily accepted at first, try again and you will probably find a blend that will be in your pipe for years to come. This is a masterpiece. And, thanks Mr. Pease for helping me find another level in pipe tobacco.

Update, February 2014: I'm smoking a nearly four year old tin right now, and it's amazing. All my notes below still apply: the Virginias and orientals providing most of the texture, with some perique and latakia peeking out above and below, with the latakia building in intensity as it goes on. But I think of this as basically a heavily-condimented VA blend, for the most part.
I also find it pipe-dependent. Want to taste more latakia? Smoke it in a pipe you usually smoke a fuller latakia blend in. Want the see where the perique fits in? Smoke it in a VA/perique pipe.
And as regards the age: things are starting to meld very nicely after four years. Very much looking forward to seeing what happens in the future here.
Go buy some. Smoke a tin immediately, and crack another in five years. Thank me later, preferably by sending me aged Chelsea Morning.
March 2010: I'm a big fan of Pease's blends and especially his less-full English blends, like Ashbury and Kensington. I thought this would be more of the same, but bought a tin anyway.
The presentation is really great, and I love that Pease has been favoring this broken-flake form factor for several of his blends lately. It gives options as to how to smoke it. I leave mine more or less intact, as I do with Fillmore and Embarcadero.
I want to note, too, that even though my tin was less than a week old and a bit more moist than most of what I smoke, the burn qualities are generally very good. Perhaps I've just refined my smoking technique, but I find Pease blends sometimes fight staying lit. Personally, it doesn't bother me having to relight, but it is nice to have a lower maintenance tobacco, and this is it.
I've been smoking this pretty much all day. For a breakfast blend, I'm often not in the mood for latakia, but because that flavor is just one of many here, it doesn't turn me off. This smoke seems to me very deep with a lot going on. But to me, the big success of this blend is that all four flavors mix together and you don't get a bit that's a hint of latakia, and then a bit of perique, and so on. The perique provides a hint of spice, the latakia the underlying smoke, and then the virginias and orientals seem to provide most of the middle work. It's remarkably consistent top to bottom, perhaps getting a little fuller as it goes on, as with a cigar.
I can't say enough nice things about this blend. Highly recommended, and one of Pease's best.

I waited several bowls of Chelsea Morning before I wrote this review. I needn't have. My first bowlful started off as a rich, creamy, full bodied smoke from the false light and has remained so every bowl since.
This is my first offering from Mr. Pease, and I think it's a great introduction. The tin aroma when first popped is sensational (I use the term "savory"), and you can smell the pungent Latakia and Orientals coming through. The moisture content is somewhat high, but a few minutes spread out before packing helps immensely. The VA's do begin to assert themselves in both the "bouqet" and the smoke, with a nice sweetness that is smoothly married to the flavoring components in just the right orchestration. The end has a nice peppery finish as the Perique joins in to put the final touches on the bowl, and leave you yearning for the next.
I enjoy it more in the A.M. with my first cup than after dark, sort of a wake-up call to my senses; therefore it will not be an all-day smoke for me. But this is good enough to have you anxious to climb out of bed on a cold February morning!
This is certainly going to be one of my favorites for some time, and has me looking forward to the continuation of the London Series.

I am very very partial to full-bodied English blends like Nightcap, 965 and Beck's old limey... I heard so much about this I wanted to try it to see if it could bump it's way into my rotation... This is a smooth and sophisticated mix with an even start with the typical oriental flavors a relatively smooth middle and then a strong but not unpleasant spicy finish It lights easily, burns to a fine white ash, but I did have to re-light 1/3 of the way through ( a little unusual for me) I understand why people like it, but I can't say it's replaced anything in my cellar... It is more complex and pleasant than most of the C and D's I've tried and I like it better than Westminster, but I don't see this is great enough to re-order, but folks who enjoy less full bodied English blends will ( and obviously do ) like this a lot

Virginia and Oriental carry the blend with Latakia and Perique
weaving in and out in the background lending just the right
amount of support. Easy to load and nary a bite in a bowl full.

This should be smoked like the name recommends, in the morning with your favorite cup of coffee. The smoky and earthy aromas complement each other very well. If you are not used to a medium flavored tobacco, care should be taken prior to completely loading your favorite bulldog. Everyone who loves the mornings and a good cup 'o joe should treat themselves to a can of this tobacco.

I believe Pease has created two all time classic tobaccos: Key Largo and Chelsea Morning. I absolutely love this blend. My most favorite tobacco first thing in the morning, with my favorite cup of coffee, has been Dunhill's EMP. I still have a few tins of this tobacco in my cellar, which by now has quite a bit of age on it. When I first tried Cheslea Morning I was completely amazed with the smoothness, deliciousness, and balance in this blend. It has now become my #1 most favorite first thing in the morning smoke with my favorite cup of coffee. There is just the right amount of Virginia, Latakia, Orientals, and Perique in this blend. Nothing overpowers in this blend. It changes character throughout the bowl, and seems to like just about any pipe I have put it into.
I believe, that with age on the tin, this will be a world-class blend. Greg really knocked the ball out of the park with this one.

It lives up to the hype, I got this because of the reviews here, 2 tins so far, and its exactly as described. Perfect in the morning, able to be smoked all day. It is mild and puffs so very well. It reminds me personally of a more enticing version of McClelland's 3 Oaks Syrian. I am not saying the tobaccos are the same or even should be, but they smoke similar is all.
One note, it goes well with coffee, but not at all well with anything like scotch in my opinion. I hope I can find and order more before it all gets gobbled up.

I am about to do what I despise others doing. I am reviewing a style of Blend I generally dislike. But since I don't write reviews of blends I don't approve of, stick with me gentle reader.
I received a tin of Chelsea Morning as a gift. People have asked me if I'd tried this, and I politely said "No"- It's been suggested to me on occasions. The gifter KNOWS I don't like latakia blends, but they did it anyway so I have finally accepted that Kismet, Karma, or Destiny must play it's part. Opening the tin, the smell is like Aarakis Spice. The Orientals waft up to the nose as much as the latakia, which is gentle. The moisture is perfect-Hmmmmm...I don't normally say that. I take enough for a pipe, and leave it in my mixing bowl to breath through lunch. Returning I fully rub the thick ribbons, and pack a Peterson Meer that ,like a bloodhound, never fails to sniff out nuances. I prepare myself as a Samurai for a tea ceremony. Baby is asleep, phone off, house quite. I am ready. On light up, The latakia takes a brief, but bold front. As it calms, the Virginia body comes forward building the blend up as the latakia recesses- The two become one. The Orientals- Izmir I assume for the sweetness- and perique become more noticeable, and suddenly I get a vision of Sidney Greenstreet in the "Blue Parrot"- Why? Got me. Perhaps the scene subconsciously represents the Exotic. Through the rest of the bowl I have this wonderful, exotic, Incense like smoke that has good strength, a big character, great burn characteristics. This is a transcendental smoke! Much as a symphony can tell a story, so does this blend- It's one I shall enjoy experiencing again and again. A Hat Tip to Master Pease.

I am not a fan of mild pipe tobacco, but this is SO GOOD. When I read the early reviews, my reaction was "Yaah, everyone loves a new tobacco." I approached it with skepticism but the first pipe full made a believer out of me. I have finished my first tin and am waiting for three more. It makes a good early morning smoke. The taste far exceeds it's strength. I shouldn't go on like this because I foresee shortages.

God bless Greg Pease!
That being said I'll get down to it.
I don't claim to have the most refined palate when it comes to tasting tobaccos. However, I can certainly appreciate the delicate nuances of this fine blend. This stuff packs well, lights easy and stays lit. Burns even and can easily be an all day smoke for those who love a mild English.
I am an English lover and tend to be rather critical of those blends. I smoked my first bowl full while doing nothing but evaluating the blend. After that, made a nice cup of tea, grabbed the paper and puffed leisurely enjoying it in my complacency.
I'm going to be friends with this stuff for years to come and am officially putting it in my regular rotation.
If you love or even like English blends and haven't tried this yet, TRY IT!
Happy Holidays to all!

Harmonius blend
Great with coffee or green tea
Always wanting more
The Nobel Peace Prize was given to the wrong person this year. If all the leaders of the world were forced to sit down and discuss the issues while smoking a bowl of Chelsea Morning, everything would be solved. There would be no more war, an end to starvation and poverty and no more human suffering. They Nobel Foundation would change the name of the award to the Nobel PEASE Prize.
Alright, maybe that's a little much. If you like mild English blends, then you'll love this. And who cares how it will age. I wouldn't want to wait long enough to find out.

I have smoked this out a no name Italian prince, and a Savinelli 707a Alligator. All I can say about this blend is "Wow!" An absolutely beautiful blend that is wonderful in the morning and all day. A smooth, delicate flavor (still very young and raw)that has a powdery cocoa flavor to it. Very nice, not much fruitiness detected, but the cocoa flavor is definitely noticeable. The flavor reminds me of a Cuban cigar (San Cristobal El Principe). Very smooth, and an absolute delight as an all day blend. I am wondering how this will fair about 5 years from now.

This guy has hit a mark with this one. It is not like that other morning blend that has been around for so long and is now gone, but it hits the same mark and it is just wonderful. Buying more cans right away. Try it if you like a good smoke with your coffee or tea in the morning.

Where to start? Beautiful in the tin, wonderful aroma. Nice, long strands with just the right amount of leaf lock. Perfect moisture right out of the tin. This beauty was made for the bulldog or billiard. I'm on tin #3 and have settled on an old Charatan Author dedicated to this perfect morning weed. A strong cup of Assam and two or three bowls of this will improve your outlook on life. This is what Early Morning Pipe wanted to be, but never quite got there. Its charm fades toward noonish, when more punch is in order, but that's what Westminster is designed for.
If you want to brighten your day, this is the blend to start with.

My first couple of smokes of Chelsea Morning I tried in two different pipes: the first being a pipe I made last week and the other in a basket pipe that I restored a while back. Both do well with Charing Cross, but neither did well with Chelsea Morning. Today, however, I decided to give it another go, only this time in a GBD Prehistoric Lovat that quite honestly seems to be made for smoking perique.
Upon opening the tin I found Chelsea Morning to have a delightfully sweet aroma. Its cut was absolutely perfect as was the moisture content. It also packed perfectly as well. It was a little bit harder to light than some other blends I have tried (not sure why, but some of his blends seem to not light easily - maybe I am doing something wrong??).
This time around, my smoking experience was completely different than with the other pipes. Chelsea Morning danced on my tongue, interweaving the different subtleties of the Perique and Latakia. At times I noticed more Perique, and at other times I noticed more Latakia. Most of the time they melded together with the Orientals and Virginias to create a new flavor that goes exceedingly well with a cup of coffee and crisp October weather. I loved it. It was still strong - but not too strong - and it burned quite slowly, allowing me to savor all the subtleties and complexities.
I don't think Chelsea Morning will ever be an all-day smoke for me, but then again Mr. Pease never blended it to be that way. I do, however, think it could be an every-morning smoke as it is a wonderful morning blend that goes well with a cup of coffee and a long, relaxing sit.

Chelsea morning pipe has a good level of sophistication-complexity, but at the same time can be a straightforward all-day english blend. It is equally excellent to start the day with a morning bowl, or for a late midnight last bowl. It seems Virginias and orientals/Turkish lead with a supporting role of Latakia and perique as also many folks describe, however I did find in many puffs a more pronounced role of the perique here and there. It gives a smoky, somewhat sweet and creamy experience and due to its ingredients it is woody, earthy and mildly-to-moderately grassy with fruit notes. It has a medium ribbon cut, such as a very thoroughly broken flake into smaller pieces and perfect moisture to be smoked directly without drying time. However, when the new tin is open, it is recommended to let the tobacco settle in the jar for a week or so to start revealing its power and taste. It does not give the “deep” smoke as the nightcap, but the broadness and oriental/Virginia dominance that EMP gives with the addition of perique this time. This is because throughout the smoke, you can clearly understand here the different components and this helps a lot new pipe smokers to develop their palate experience and detection of the ingredients of an English blend. It burns very slow, clean and very-very cool without tongue bite and the pipe remains pretty cool throughout the smoke. For me, it didn’t need any relight in the process after the first couple of relights at the very-very start of the bowl; e.g., in a savinelli 673 it remains lit for about 50 minutes and smokes to the very bottom of the bowl leaving minimum amount of ash. It gives excellent smoke experience in medium bowls, such as savinelli 673, Peterson 80s/999 or medium size corn cobs, but it is also excellent in some deeper bowls with narrower diameter. A full 4-star great blend. In terms of room note, i do think that it is tolerable-to-strong even though for us (the pipe smokers) it might seem to be “pleasant”; one Sunday morning my wife came to the room I was smoking Chelsea MP and told me “oooh, i thought you were smoking Marlboro red”. LOL

Similar Blends: Relatively similar to early morning pipe but with the addition of perique, gives similar broadness of smoke experience, mild-to medium strength (little closer to medium), similar in terms of ingredients to nightcap but does not give the “deep” smoke of nightcap, but rather a “wider” experience due to clearer distinction of its components..

A pleasant blend for first thing in the morning, hot cup of coffee or Englsih tea. The combination of Latakia and Perique jsut give a wisp of nice spice and flavor. A sublte fruitiness is noted, and the smoke is smooth and creamy. A second to Meridian, this is a great blend in my rotation. If you are new to English styles or an introduction to English this is a definite blend to try.

I'm enjoying my 2nd bowl now and this stuff is taking me back to some of the best bowls that I enjoyed 20 years ago.I found that I need to rub it out a bit and then I can use the Frank method and sip it gently. Complex true tobacco flavour. Should age beautifully too.

Just had to chime in as well, this seems to be a great addition. I do believe Mr. Greg Pease has found his calling in life.
