POUL WINSLOW Poul Winslow No 1

(3.00)
The No 1 is an exotic blend of black cavendish, burley and long cuts of Virginia from 3 continents. The tobacco is carefully blended in order to preserve the characteristics of each individual tobacco type. The tobacco has been cased with fine aroma of vanilla, prune and coconut and a dash of original Jamaica rum. It has the taste of a true modern master blend.

This is the first pipe tobacco I ever tried. When I picked up my first pipes a year ago I bought a tin of this blend as well. My method of picking it was the only way that felt right as a complete stranger to all the different types of tobacco and blends; I asked the helpful clerk at the pipeshop what he would recommend a new pipesmoker who doesn't have a history of smoking cigarettes, and only has enjoyed an occasional cigarr now and then earlier. He recommended a few blends, and judging from the tin note I immediately picked this blend.

The smell of rum is very present, you can't smell this blend and not notice it. There is also a perfumy smell I later recognised as coconut. I happened to be in luck while picking this blend since mr. Winslow himself was in the shop, and he was smoking this (his) blend. I fell in love with the roomnote immediately, so with the good room- and tin note it was a nobrainer for me to choose this blend.

The tobacco is definately an aromatic blend, and I for one can't get enough of its great smell. The smell alone was the thing that kept me taking out the pipe and tobacco again and again since my learningcurve was quite long (due to my lack of previous smoking). This blend initially gave my virgin tongue a real burn for two reasons: it's a very sweet blend probably with addad sugar, and I puffed away like crazy the first times I smoked my new pipe. (The clerk had advised me to take it slow and relight rather then try to get through the whole bowl in 30 minutes, but a year later now I can say I was in too much of a hurry even though I thought I was smoking calmly). I get compliments on the roomnote of this tobacco from my friends, and they don't mind me smoking this in their company (outdoors).

The first time I tried this blend in my new churchwarden I started to notice the taste better. It was the long stem that allowd the smoke to cool down before reaching my tongue that made me realise I had been smoking too fast earlier. "Wow, I can have my clothes and beard smell great WITHOUT burning my tastebuds on my tongue?" Now when I smoke this blend in my shorter pipes I never get tonguebite, so for me it was simply a matter of learning to smoke more calmly to get rid of the bite.

The taste is nowhere near as strong as the smell, but I enjoy it. As time progressed I have started to taste more of the coconut and less of the rum. I call this my "coconutblend", but the coconut is not the dominant taste of this tobacco. I find that the taste is different form bowl to bowl, probably since I mostly smoke pipes with small bowls and the different cuts of the different tobaccos in this blend tend to arrange themselves according to size when I put the tobacco out for a presmokedrying. This means I get different amounts of different tobacco in every bowl, since there are tobaccoleaves of many different sizes and types in this blend. Therefore I wouldn't call this a consistent blend with smallbowled pipes, but for me it only keeps things interesting. When I smoke this tobacco in my poker with a large bowl the taste is very consistant between the different smokes. So far I've never gotten my head spinning from this tobacco, so it's probably quite low on vitamin D. (At least compared to Black Cherry, my head was spinning after 15 minutes and I couldn't finish my first bowl of that blend).

To sum up this review I can only say good things about this blend. For me it was a homerun first time picking up the bat, I have tried different blends (mostly aromatics with vanilla or cherry and different virginias), but I keep craving this tobacco the most when I feel the urge to sit down in peace and enjoy a pipe. The only downside with this tobacco is the tendency to smoke hot if you are in a hurry, but this can ba avoided by smoking it slow. The only drawback with smoking it slow is I usually have to relight the pipe every 10 minutes, since this blend doesn't stay lit as easy as one of my other favourites, Sweet Dublin. But then again, as one who defines my smokinghabit nonregular and mostly as a means to relax and take my mind of things, a relight now and then isn't really a problem.

Strongly aromatic, nice tin box to keep the Tobacco from getting dry. As said in other reviews, the aroma that leaves the box when open is quite... impressive. The loose cut is big enough to guarantee a nice, regular burning. If you prefer natural, unflavored Tobacco do not try it. Otherwise it is a nice Tobacco to buy occasionnaly.

I bought this tin based on an internet review, calling this a flavor bomb. It is defenitely an aroma bomb when you open the very beautiful tin with a very beauttiful tobacco presentation of broad cut ribbons in colors from bright yellow to black. This being said, I find the smell a bit over the top: vanilla prunes, coconut and Rum add just too many sweetness to this pie. The smoke from this tobacco is quite mild and lacks body, it tends to smoke hot (due to all the sugar?) and make my pipe gurgle. This is the most aromatic blend I've smoked so far, and I find it overdone. I would recommend WO Larssen Vintage mixture instead of this one if you like high quality expensive aromatics.

Very fine tobacco. The flavors of coconut, rum and prune have blended amazingly. Tremendous aroma once you open the box. It is a tobacco that can easily be smoked throughout the day. I must thank the person who recommended it.

Update The box I opened burnt my tongue; furthermore it warms up the bowl too much. This is why it misses the second spot in my list of favorites. Probably this is because it arrived from America distinctly different. I will try the European Winslow in 2-3 months and I will place it second to last in my favorite list.

Update 29/08/09. Finally it is a good tobacco. It burns the tongue a little. I am now used to smoking oriental-latakia and that is why I did not like it at first. The tobacco I was sent from America is DIFFERENT. I cannot give it 4 stars anymore but it does not belong in a second to last place.

This was one of the first blends I've ever smoked (and smoke it I did; I did smoke about 5 tins of it), though it's definitely not a favorite and I doubt I'll be getting another tin in the future. For what it's worth, I mostly enjoy English blends, though I do like smoking the occasional aromatic. From what I see, several other reviewers share my views, but perhaps my 2 cents can be useful to someone regardless.

On the positive side, this blend comes in a very beautiful and resealable tin. Its aroma, which is incredibly strong, makes me think of caramel and fudge (perhaps it's the combination of vanilla and rum? who knows!), which is a nice association. Due to this, I think it's a very nice tobacco to smoke when strolling in public (my non-smoking partner fell in love with the smell instantly).

Unfortunately, I did not enjoy smoking this blend as much as I enjoyed smelling it from the tin. First, the smoke itself was too mild and without enough body for my taste (which I'd assume is the case for other English blend smokers too). Second, it smoked too hot and all times made my pipe gurgle, no matter my cadence (and I tried many different times, using many different paces and pipes).

Now that time has passed and I have found other tobaccos that I really like, I won't be buying any more of this blend. I never throw tobaccos away though, so every now and then I take it out of my cellar and pack my pipe with it, to see if gets better with age. No luck yet, but I'll keep trying!

Aromatic with obscure taste and aggressive behavior. Smoked some, won't buy it again.

Decent aromatic tobacco. Tin note is very similar to Stanwell Melange, such as rum and coconut. Has a nice room note you can enjoy if you are an aromatic smoker. But this is a bit more balanced blend and has more taste of tobacco than Melange. Burns down slow, cool and nice, leaves fine white ash. Local store owner recommended when I couldn't get Connoisseur's Choice saying no one disliked it yet. And I'm happy with this too.

Very good tobacco I recommend it to everyone, a lot of aromas and taste. A tobacco that I love because it is complex and with a lot of body.

I really like aromatics tobacco. And this one is the best aromatic tobacco that I have already smoked. The aromas are outstanding, it burns pretty well, it has a medium body. You can feel sweetness, but it is very well balanced. Low bitterness and low acidity. The flavours are amazing, you can feel the flavours of good tobacco and from the adjuncts. At the end the residual taste is very enjoyable. For sure it is on my top 3 favorite tobacco.
