Brebbia Rondo' (Mixture No. 27)

(3.33)
The same great blend as the Brebbia Classic English Mix No. 7 but with a new name and packaging! A classical English mixture of various spicy tobaccos such as Syrian latakia and Louisiana perique. Cross cut, fully aromatic, cool burning. High class quality tobacco for the demanding pipe smoker. A unique smooth, mellow and long lasting blend.
Notes: English Mixtures #7 and #70, and Rondo Mixture #27, are all the same blend.

Brebbia - Rondo (#27).

It contains mostly larger leaves but also a selection of sizes and shapes. The aroma doesn't scream 'opprobrious English', instead it's rather mild and a little fruity. The tin contains a polythene insert which holds the tobacco and has been quite compressed so needs to be broken apart! Sadly mine looked a little too dry; I've had this for three years but when I opened it I heard a 'hiss', so it hasn't dried over the few years.

There's no doubt to this containing Orientals. VERY sour, sharp, Orientals. These, to my taste, lead the pack. The slightly 'fusty' Latakia resides in 2nd position; not a 'Lat-Bomb', by any means, but the Latakia's a fairly stalwart addition. I notice an ample amount of Perique, a spiciness brings a 'strength' to the flavour. I get a touch of fruit from the Virginia, giving a 'playful', lighter-hearted nuance to the smoke. The downside comes from the burn; above average speed and the same goes for temperature.

Nicotine: medium. Room-note: not bad.

Rondo? A nice flavour but not well behaved! But, this flavour warrants three stars:

Recommended.

Number 70 (now known as Rondo), was much different than their #80 English in that the Burley was replaced by Perique. The Syrian Latakia remains the main player and the Virginia presence is also more noticeable and had smoothed out considerably over the years (my tin was from 2007). A light Dunhill Nightcap and no so refined is the way I would describe this one. It will be out of production soon, or, the Syrian will be replaced by Cyprian.

Fishflake type cut of mostly mid browns with some darker leaf and some green cast leaf, the latter I assume to be Orientals. Lat can be detected on the nose but the amount of dark leaf is quite small.

This has a bubblegum type tin note, some kind of berry perhaps.

Burns well and produces a cool easy smoke. There isn't much perique so far as I can tell, but there is some pepper which does a good job of counterpointing the sweetness of this blend. I found the aroma of the sidestream smoke appealing.

This is a mild aromatic built on a light English blend. A nice change of pace tobacco, but in all honesty not something I reach for very often.

Jacinto Cupboard is correct about this containing Orientals. The description at pipesandcigars.com has them listed and I can very clearly taste them. I edited the above contents in the description to reflect this.

This is actually led by the Orientals mildly sour woody note followed by a touch of sweet hay from the Virginias. Both the Latakia and Perique are lightly applied giving little more than smoky spice. There is a lightly applied fruity topping that is noticed more in the room note than in the taste. Smokes like a light Balkan mix to me and is very well done. I can't find any fault with this smoke which earns it full honors.

Body and taste are mild to medium. Flavoring is extremely mild. This cut burns cool and very consistent. Good stuff.

BRREBBIA RONDO’: a classic English mixture. But better than many other English blends. Virginia is of average quality but what makes the difference is from one hand the Syrian Latakia and from the other hand the spicy Perique. Latakia is really Syrian Latakia and it is woody, musky, smoky. Nowadays it is difficult to find a mixture with this ancient type of Latakia. Perique is really Louisiana Perique of the best quality and it is strongly present. It is spicy, peppery and well balanced. I think this is one of the rare Latakia mixtures with such a high content of Perique. In short: in this perfectly balanced blend you can taste the old noble Latakia and, what is most surprising is that Perique is not covered but very very present. In my personal rating system (from 1 to 10) my score is 8 and three complete stars.

Brebbia Rondo is an interesting blend. From the tin note to the cut to the flavor this is a unique and enjoyable tobacco. The tin note has sweet smokey Syrian Latakia and and figgy Perique, the most noticeable component of the aroma is the topping This is most definitely topped but with what is very hard to pin point. I would bet that there is a Tawny Port applied to the tobacco before it is tinned up. This does not play a role in the flavor beyond charring light The cut is a real treat as well. It looks as if it were hacked up with an axe or shredded by hand ( in gentleman speak it is a rough cross cut). Nice full pieces of leaf that packs and burns beautifully. I have read others report that the tins were wet and seemed to have PG added but my tins were all on the dry side with no PG detectable. The taste his you with a hint of Port on the char and then opens up with woody orientals and Latakia. The sweet Syrian Latakia and Orientals seamlessly meld together. This is a truly harmonious blend where the product is not the sum of the parts, it is far greater. This is a light Balkan, malty and that slight port sweetness boost the flavors really nicely. There is smoke and cedar, a slight sourness from the Orientals. The Perique is a light condiment that provides an additional spice to the retro hale and also plays very nicely to support and also supports the other tobacco's especially the Virginia's as you get through the midway point in the bowl.

This is a smooth spectacular smoke. If you can get your hands on this I highly recommend.
