Ilsted Own Mixture Golden Flake

(3.50)
The base of this delicious flake is a mixture of golden and orange Virginias. This tobacco seduces you with its natural, complex sweetness and slight nuances of lemon. Delicate aromas of meadow honey and fruity orange underline this.

The bright Virginia provides a bit of grass/hay along with some tart and tangy citrus. The orange Virginia has a light, tangy dark fruitiness and a little tart citrus, a hint of spice and a touch of wood and grass in a support role. The tart lemon topping takes a lead over the orange and honey, and only mildly tones down the tobacco. The strength and nic-hit are very mild. The taste level is mild. Won’t bite, and has no harsh or dull moments. The flake is easily broken apart and burns cool and clean at a reasonable pace with a one dimensional, consistent flavor as it easily burns to ash. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. Has a pleasant after taste, and lightly stronger room note. It is an all day smoke. It’s much like a lighter Orlik Golden Sliced, though the lemon echoes that aspect in Dunhill Flake.

Aroma description on tin is quite accurate.

This is a great allday smoke. A quality virginia blend with subtle honey and orange topping lingering in the background while you puff away. This one i put in the same category as Orlik's Golden Sliced and Richmonds Navy Cut. Probably Golden Flake is the mildest of these three.

Virginia Lovers should try it at least once!

Tin descriptions are seldom accurate; this one being anexception.

The flakes are the same size of Solani's flakes (about two MacBaren flakes stuck together side by side. I am a roll and stuffer but this is easily rubbed out. The flake has specks of gold, brown and even some black. It says straight virginia but I would be willing to bet they cavendish press some Virginias and include that in the blend.

As mentioned before, the flavors read just like the tin description; lemons, honey and orange. It's a very mild Va with sweet grassy undertones supporting the previous flavors. Imagine a sweet lemon merengue pie baked in a honey crust.

I found that this tobacco really shines in a long shanked group 3 size pipe. I have a Duncan Hill canadian and the flavors really came out in that pipe.

This blend is somewhat reminiscnet of Orlik Golden Sliced with less spice and more lemon, honey and orange. I also found it similar to Dunhill Flake (again with more lemon and honey and orange).

Highly recommended for a VA introduction, just a little too sweet and not enough umph (for my tastes) to give it a 4 star. Still a very enjoyable smoke.

After ordering this on line, I noticed that lemon and honey is used as a topping, my heart sank. On opening the tin, a quick sniff concurred, lemon and honey, I had a mental image of a McB's salesman "Will that be six scoops of honey or seven"? followed by a cheery "Three lumps of caramel to cover your tasteless tobacco sir"?

I was pleasantly supprised to find both lemon and honey, which is present, well and truly in the background. A tempered hand has been used, proven by several DGT's.

IMHO, the benchmark for an excellent Virginia is Sam Gawith's Golden Glow / Medium Virginia Flake and Capstan Flake Medium.

Golden Flake however, is in my opinion, of a lighter vein, this does not mean it's bad. The flakes rub out easily and take to the match, the flavouring remains firmly in the background as noted and a good quality virginia, without bite I may add, comes to the fore. For me, this will be a more interesting smoke as the weather warms. For now, a good tobacco, I have no regrets buying two tins, they will not gather dust and as the summer progresses, I may well buy more.

Well worth a try without being an outstanding smoke.

I received a sample of this one and tested it rubbed and folded both in medium size chambers.

Sample was packed in a plastic bag so the cold smell of it got lost I guess. All I could smell was mild Virginia like in natural flakes. Beautiful looking rather dark flakes with golden sparkles here and there.

Fills into pipe perfectly with both methods and lits easily then burns very cool and slow until the end (needed to relight once).

The complex VA flake taste really surprised me as I didn't expect much (due to price and cold smell). Sweet fruity background flavouring nicely supports the tobacco tastes that sometimes come sweet and mellow then turn to more spicy ones wich also bring out the honey casing. The last third of the smoke is a bit more intense when folded.

Solid and well topped Virginia flake that's not boring at all Could become my all day.

A flavoured virginia flake can be a unique experience and this one is no exception.once the tin opens a nice deep sweet and spicy aroma combined with citruces ans grass notes comes out.the bright and brown coloured flakes have proper moisture nice texture even if they are stucked between them.the flakes rub out very easy and no drying time is needed.lighting needs some effort with some relights needed through smoking process.while smoking the flavours are natural combining very well with the topping which supports the experience without subtlimating the virginias.grass, citruses, earth some dark fruits and spicy notes give a nice combination.the honey adds some deep sweet notes and the lemon, orange enhances the virginia flavours from the beginning till the end of the smoke.burns slow and medium hot to perfect ash with lots of moisture being captured at the filter.nicotine level is low(it should be a bit higher) and the room note is pleasant.no chance of tongue bite no harsh spots even if pushed 2ith a nice aftertaste.an all day smoke.generally this is a very nice blend worthy trying!

This review is about Peter Heinrichs' house blend No. 100, which is the same tobacco.

A perfectly composed mild Virginia flake with a skillfully and discreetly applied top flavor that never gets in the way of the tobacco taste. The handling characteristics are fantastic, I have rarely encountered a less finicky tobacco. Can definitely be an all-day smoke for those so inclined. Perfect for someone who is just starting to venture into the world of Virginia flakes or for old hands that want something they can puff on autopilot. The only downside is that it has very little edges which can be a bit boring. But as I said before, uniformity in taste is not a bad thing per se.

Excellent Virginia! Mild, yet fragrant (the smell out from the tin is heavenly!) with subtle nuances of citrus and just some sweetness. Nothing overwhelms here, all Virginias have a role to play in this wonderful blend. As one of the esteemed reviewers here has written - a pipe with a long shank is the best one to use for this tobacco. I can recommend a large Corn cob - MacArthur style. The smoke is cool and there will be no tongue bite, just pure heaven!
