This is a basic Dutch cavendish. I never smoked much Amphora Brown back when it was in every grocery store, but this is similar to what I remember. One of the other reviews said it was like Sail Regular, and that is true in terms of strength and cut. I find Sail Regular to have a slightly sweet taste with just a little oriental spice.

This is a good smoke, but it is nothing fancy. I got tobacco flavor, natural subdued sweetness and a cool burn. It is a combination that works. This is an "all-day" blend, and by that I mean I have smoked five bowls of it in a row and did not get bored with it or suffer palate fatigue.

Edit 8/31/14: I bought a pound of this when the sample was gone. I find that I go through this at a brisk rate. I reach for it a lot. It is simple and satisfying. This is a solid 3.5 on the scale. It is not something everyone should try, but it works very well for me.

The flue cured Virginia is a bit grassy with some tart citrus, light floralness, and a bit of spice as the lead component. The nutty, earthy, woody burley is also a little toasty with a touch of molasses in a supporting role. The Virginia cavendish offers tart citrus and honey, and noticeably melds well with the other varietals. The spice is a little tongue tingly, so I recommend a slow to moderate puffing cadence, or you may feel a little bite and a harsh note. Has a few small rough edges. The topping (honey?) is hard to define, but is a little sweet, and doesn't detract from the tobaccos. The strength and nic-hit are just past the center of mild to medium. The taste level is a step past that mark. Burns slightly fast, requires very few relights, and has a very consistent flavor as it easily burns to ash. Leaves almost no moisture in the bowl. Has a short lived, pleasant after taste and room note. Not very complex, but serves well as an all day smoke.

...Quite a nice tobacco...simple, straightforward. yet it pleases all my senses. While it is a dramatic shift from the strong plug/flake tobaccos I smoke, it has made it into my top 15 tobaccos in rotation. This is one of those few tobaccos that fits under, "Less is more"... Extremely pleasant taste and aroma, and can be enjoyed in any size pipe...especially good with hot tea/coffee and in the evening with a wee dram of single malt. Certainly worth a try...

The third is a series of reviews on Peter Stokkebye's more naturally flavored tobaccos, the other two being Cube Cut and Aromatic Dutch Slices. No appreciable aroma other than that of fine tobacco, and like the other two previously reviewed tobaccos, NDC was easy to load and light. The overall smoking characteristics were outstanding and similar to those already mentioned. This one, for me, was more Virginia forward (but not hay like) and had more of a spiciness/sharpness while exhaling through the nose. A very naturally tasting smoke and very appealing. A bit more tingling on the tongue than the other two but no bite to speak of. Smoked dry to the heel, without moisture or dottle, and maintained a very nice, pure tobacco taste throughout the smoke. Solid smoking experience and for me but would have preferred a more, fuller tasting Burley in the mix. A good set it and forget it type of smoke and along with the other three, very affordable.

It always cracks me up when people say a certain blend of pipe tobacco tastes like cigarettes. I also smoke cigarettes and wish they could taste like this blend. Honestly, if you think this tastes like cigarettes then they either sold you a bag of "faux" pipe tobacco or you've never had a cigarette. I don't say this to be harsh, I say it to make it clear that it is IMPOSSIBLE to mistake this for cigarette tobacco.

The jar smell reveals some kind of topping, maybe vanilla. This blend, however, isn't heavily cased and you can taste the tobacco. I would qualify this as a lightly aromatic cavendish blend. The taste and aroma develop into a creamy coconut type flavor, and the last third is more reminiscent of a plain burley blend, but slightly sweeter.

A simple whiff at the jar will convince you it won't taste anywhere close to a cigarette.

Rather suprising that a bulk dutch style cavendish of this sort has some appreciable nicotine. It's a bit closer to medium than mild in this regard. Dutch style cav's are generally very light. In fact, it seems to me despite the description that there must be at least some lighter dark fired leaf in this blend, slight smokiness in there. In line with dutch style it is very light in flavor with a very mild chocolate-like casing. The cut is a ready rubbed caked tobacco along the lines of the old Amphora, perhaps a bit chunkier. Moisture level was just about perfect with no noticable humicants, no bite. This should be a good mixer.

As a smoker who enjoys sail regular, and skandinavik regular, I find peter stokebye natural dutch cavendish to be very similar to sail regular, and a lot less expensive. It also reminds me of the old amphora regular, as well as I can remember it. It is a good flavorful all day kind of smoke, without all the goop and additives of some of the other brands like lane, and mcClelland's.Granger rough cut, sail regular, stokkebye luxury navy flake, and mcBaren virginia no.1, are the favorites in my rotation, although i've found myself smoking p.s.natural dutch cavendish 90% of the time. If you like sail regular,or the old amphora regular, this is the blend for you. I buy mine from for $12.50 per 8 oz. Natural dutch cavendish may become the only tobacco I buy in bulk in the future, except for an ocassional can of granger rough cut,as I enjoy a good burley with my morning coffee. I give p.s.natural dutch cavendish four stars.I've also found this blend to be bite-free.

Stokkebye’s Natural Dutch Cavendish doesn’t offer much in the way of scent in the pouch other than a light sweetness. It’s fairly dry to the touch verses a black Cavendish. In the pipe it is very straight forward offering no complexity but then who expects that from a Cavendish blend? It is mild, and sweet, but not overly sweet, rather just enough to satisfy my sweet tooth. I think that JimInks description of citrus and honey comes closest to what I taste. There is no bitterness that I can detect and if there is any artificial flavor like those found in OTC blends, I can’t taste it. It burns cool and leaves no coating in my mouth like similar blends that I have smoked. I also like the fact that it burns pretty dry not leaving much in the way of moisture in the pipe. At the current price point, this is a far better offering than any of the OTC blends like it that I have tried. Nothing fancy here, but good all the same!

Peter Stokkebye - Natural Dutch Cavendish.

In the pouch: well rubbed, fairly uniform, medium brown, ribbons. There's not much of aroma, there's a slightly sharp sweetness, but nothing exactly potent. The moisture of this pouch was good when it arrived.

At first, the leading flavour, to me, is the sweet Cavendish. It takes until the burn's settled for a sort of lemony sharpness to be introduced. This breathes life into the smoke, and doesn't allow it to taste lazy. The Burley fills the smoke out, with its no-nonsense nutty character. The burn from N.D.C. is exemplary in its consistency, but in my opinion could do with being much cooler.

The room-note's pleasant enough, but not exactly my thing, and the nicotine's mild to medium.

Because of a few things, mainly the heat, I'll only somewhat recommend this:

Two stars.

While not complex at all there is reasonable depth and flavour to this. Better than many much more expensive tobacco's ive bought. I'll definitly get some more. Good working man's smoke.

Update--I submit that this is the cheapest "natural" tobacco you can buy that is any good. By "any good" I mean a tobacco which will satisfy those used to natural premium blends with little or no flavorings and little or no PG. Do not be fooled by the word "Cavendish".

This has a very subtle sweetness and aroma, from the Dutch Cavendish process, and a nutty burley presence with a decent amount of body.

It's lack of pretense and straightforward flavor without off tastes are quite attractive. The main downside for me is it must be taken slowly or "breath smoked" or else it can get bitey.

I really enjoyed this Cavendish. Its name pretty much says it all. I was not aware of any casing, it tasted like nutty, flavorful tobacco. It's mild and doesn't pack anything beyond good tobacco flavor. I'll definitely use this one to temper some of my stronger aromatics.

The room note was quite pleasant, warm and nutty. The tobacco smoked dryly and never bit; even with aggressive puffing.

While my favorite Cavendish is Savinelli's - this one rates four stars as well.

If natural flavor is what you are looking for, stop and listen. To me this is pretty natural so much so that I have a hard time understanding why aromatic is associated with this blend. I never get true tobacco taste from aros

The Virginia's are classic sweet, Burley's mild but just packed with flavor neither are over bearing, seems to compliment the Cavendish. If there is ever a all day smoke this is by far the closes I have found.

Very few relights, if any, no dottle. I like this best at the end of the day when all is done and not feeling guilty about rewarding yourself,

Update 8/28/17

A quality natural tasting Virginia based tobacco that is perfect for a quicker, slightly sweet & pleasant smoke. Reminiscent of blends like Mac Baren Mixture Modern & Davidoff Danish Mixture, the Virginias are grassy with notes of citrus peel, honey and toast. The cavendish & burley add backbone, depth and a bit of spice to the mix. The nicotine strength is a notch below mild to medium and the overall flavor strength is a tick above that. As a few others have mentioned, the thinner straight cut sugary leaf presents a potential for bite, so pack this one a bit on the tight side & take your time. That aside, this is an enjoyable mixture with a sweet tone, fairly pleasant aroma and good balance between bright and dark tobacco flavor.

This is my first tobacco review. The fact that I've chosen NDC I guess is because it has slowly become my go to all day smoke. I enjoy a wide variety of blend styles. The price is right and the bulk only product has always remained consistent in my opinion. When I'm in the mood for a nice Vaper I should say that I mostly smoke PS Luxury Navy Flake (Maybe my next review). Again the consistency with it always keeps me coming back for more topping off my jars when needed.

When I want anything aside from a vaper I find myself going for NDC. It has made it to my ''smoking desk'' where only a few other tobacs have landed (LNF flake and Plum Pudding SR being the others). It just hits every mark for me satisfaction wise with the only exception being that of Latikia because there is none here obviously.

For some reason I always think of this blend as the Danish version of Half and Half. The cut and the taste are not exactly the same but the similarities for me are this: Half and Half used to be an all day walk around tobac for me and now NDC is. And the toppings are similar to me. I could never quite put my finger on it with H and H and the same goes here with NDC. Nonetheless I quite enjoy it and if pressed to describe it would be a sweet smoky and nuttiness. I'm not usually drawn to anything with Cavendish in the name either as it is not typically what I am looking for. I'm glad I went for it though about a year or more ago and have stuck with it. The room note is tolerable but does seem a little bit like cigarette at first but mellows quickly enough to a more pipe like smell. One of my only drawbacks with this blend is that it is bulk only as far as I know. I would love to have a go to blend that has a ''label'' or be able to have a few tins around. This is not that bad of a drawback however... I'd give it 3.5 stars.

I sometimes purchase a tobacco due to its name. Natural Dutch Cavendish (No. 301) sounds like the Indies, old sailing ships and the sea. Some say this is similar to Amphora which was one of my first tobaccos to smoke but it has been so long I do not remember. I like it, but my palate has been jaded for so long with strong coffee, strong tobacco that of course this comes across extremely mild which is fine and the way it should be. Smokes fast with a little nuttiness and natural flavor. It is a simple smoke that is a great change of pace. Rating pipe tobacco for me is hard, I do not always notice the exotic fruits, nuts and berries that reminds me more of a wine review from others than a pipe tobacco. It is a good basic 'natural tobacco'.

Has a slight sweet smell from the pouch. Bought this bulk and it came in a zip lock back. Wasn't too moist out of the bag but I still let it dry some prior to packing. The best part of the bowl for me was the first 1/3rd. Room note was pleasant but definitely not an aromatic. Taste was mellow and occasional sweet notes popping in and note. As I worked my way down things started tasting sour and despite smoking with a filter and sipping slowly I was getting some bite. I think there is something in this tobacco that doesn't agree with my tongue. Then again this isn't top shelf stuff so...... This was last year, I recently tried this again after it's aged some. Similar results. This could be a really good smoke but unfortunately this one isn't for me.

I agree with earlier reviewers who compare this to Sail. This is light to mid brown tobacco, a fairly short, fine ribbon cut. It would probably make a good RYO tobacco for those so inclined.

It has a neutral tobacco smell in the bag, with some sweetness of a molasses/raw sugar/maple type character. Once lit it also has a (not disagreeable), almost funky, vegetal smell. This is, literally, a one light tobacco.

Overall, a light and sweet smoke with a fair amount of sourness, giving it a decidedly top note character. Aside from the earlier mentioned funk, there isn't much happening in the mid and bottom range of this tobacco. Like Sail, the acidity is out of whack for my palate and I found it harsh in the mouth. YMMV. On its merits a 2, but for bargain hunters, a reliable 3 stars because it comes at a very good price.

Edit November 2017. After nearly 3 years of smoking this tobacco it has settled into being a regular for me. It is an absolutely dependable, no fuss, no nonsense tobacco. Upped the rating to 3 stars. The faults mentioned in my earlier review strike me now as nitpicking.

This is something unusual nowadays - a basic, ordinary tobacco without any frills. No added flavorings, no complex blending - just straightforward smoking tobacco with a solid tobacco taste and smell. Burns okay, perhaps slightly hot, but no noticeable tongue bite. Seems to burn quite dry. Unfortunately the taste can be bitter, probably indicating the inexpensive plain tobacco.

So - nothing special to write about, except for the fact that this is quite a bargain offered at a very attractive price, as I suppose one should expect for what is a basic ordinary product.

For those looking for a solid, basic smoking tobacco, this one will probably fit the bill. Deserves a couple of stars for function and price. Recommended on the basis that it delivers a basic smoking experience with genuine 'old world' tobacco tastes and smells at a great price, although sometimes the taste can be slightly bitter.

I decided to try this Stokkebye blend because I have had good luck with several of their other blends. I really like this blend. It packs well. Lights and burns great, and I finally get the subtle nutty and consistent flavor. This is a good smoke whilst fishing, doing yard work, and I like smoking this when I am playing golf. I seem to be fond of most Danish tobaccos, so I had a brain fart and gave this one a go, when I saw the keyword 'Dutch'.

It gives off a light, whole grain - Virginia hay aroma, has a nice dry, thin ribbon texture, and is presented as an approachable all day smoker. For being listed a Cavendish blend, it sure seems Burley. Once lit, you get a mild and clean smoke without any fanfare.

I'd say it was pretty boring, but I could see wanting it on days when you just want some plain toast (without any butter mind you), or you need to mix this into another blend to tame it down and extend it.

Not sure what changed, but I found this subtle and comforting. Even though this has cavendish tobacco, it taste's closer to a Virginia than an aromatic, and no topping, per se, is detected at all. I smoked it, both a year ago and now, in the exact same pipe, so I have no explanation of my change in opinion. I doubt the "cellaring" was the difference, but who knows . . .
