After aros, vapers, vabers, ropes, flakes, and cakes, I prefer to ride the Night Train. She is soft and sweet brown sugar with an intensity that builds through the ride. Once the conductor drawls out the "all aboard" and pulls those boarding steps in I find myself excitedly seated in the club car waiting, anticipating the sound of that 4-8-8-4 heading out into the night. The Southern Bell won't let you down. Sweetness, sultry strength, every ingredient functioning according to its design and purpose. Dancing, moving, undulating through the night, leaving the world behind. Smoke billows as we compliment one another. Slowing, can this be? She is so intoxicating, can it be over? New Orleans station, wheels barely turning, club car, only fractional movement, vibration, a sense of minute vertigo. Going to have to schedule this trip again. I know she'll be ready. I think I can handle her.

The bright Virginias are a little citrusy with a touch of grass. The cavendish cut Brown Virginia is earthy and mildly sweet with a little dark fruit tanginess. The burley is toasty, nutty, and earthy with a few hits of oats. The Virginias are supporting players, and just a shade less noticeable than the burley. The perique is very peppery with some raisin, date and fig notes, and more often than not, dominates the other tobaccos, although you’ll always get some of the other flavors. Won't bite, and has only the slightest harsh hit. Fairly well balanced with an ample nic-hit, it burns cool and slow (as crumble cakes will do) and will require relights. Burns to a fine gray ash and leaves little dampness in the bowl. The after taste and room notes will linger. Not recommended for the inexperienced smoker, but if you like a lot of perique, you’ll enjoy it. It does lose a little sweetness toward the finish. Three and a half stars.

I'll take a ride on the Night Train any time.... I opened mine after reading Mo's review (had the tobacco for awhile, just had never gotten around to trying it).

I like the sweetness and the Burley/Perique presentation along with the Virginias. It is easy to rub fully (which is my favorite way to smoke Night Train), and it burns easily.

I do think there is a little too much perique in this blend for me to consume it on a regular basis.... But, nothing wrong with choo chooing on the Night Train every once in awhile.

FUN WITH C&D SAMPLES, VOL III, No. VI

My 2 oz sample contained 4 small "bricks" of pressed tobacco that was pretty easy to crumble and load but did require a bit of dexterity. The tobacco was a nice mix of light and dark color.

Again, the earthy burley flavor that C&D is noted for comes through in spades. The perique lent its usual commentary and the VA's remained firmly in the background, although they jumped out at various intervals. Very nicotine-laden but interestingly I didn't OD on this as I occasionally did with C&D's Krumble Kake. This was, however, best after a meal. I'd call this a robustly flavored tobacco, but all natural.

The only problem I had with this one was an occasional ashy taste as the bowl progressed. It would show up for a few puffs and then recede, but it generally came back with a vengeance at the bottom of the bowl. It wasn't horribly off-putting but it was noticeable enough to keep this one from a 4th star. I enjoyed my time with it but there are similar blends that I find more worthy for my regular rotation. But this is one to try if you regularly smoke strong nicotine blends and enjoy that nice earthy burley flavor coupled with perique. I'll stick with Burley Flake #3, thanks.

At times Night Train can be somewhat difficult to find, especially in bulk or in two ounce tins, so my first purchase came in the form of a single eight ounce tin. I know, kind of a gamble, but now I am wishing I had bought two more.

The tin note has a light dried apricot and zesty citrus aroma, both sweet and slightly sour. The firmly pressed cakes break up easily and the tobacco burns perfectly with little to no dry time. The flavor is burley forward; it’s deep, earthy and toasty, but there's a certain unexpected light freshness to it that defies its strength. There's also a definite sweetness from the bright Virginia which fits nicely within the fullness of the flavor. The spiciness of the perique gradually builds down the bowl but the effect is pleasing and in no way overdone.

The nicotine is noticeable and I wouldn't want to smoke a huge amount of this at a steady clip, but there's no need to because there's a lot going on and each gentle sip has plenty of intense flavor. The room note is almost pleasant, even my wife mentioned that it smelled pretty good and that the aroma is an improvement over what I usually smoke.

An excellent, full bodied, strong, yet very well balanced mixture.

Cornell & Diehl - Night Train.

I love Krumble Kakes, love Perique, and Night Train was one of my favourite Guns n Roses songs!

For a loosely pouched blend, it's still a touch too moist; I think that's due to it being pressed quite firmly. I ordered just a 1oz pouch and I'd say about 85% of the blend's still in kake form with only about a pipe's worth already broken.

The flavour would warrant the name VaPer rather than the current VaBur title on here; the Perique's the leading flavour. That's not saying the other flavours are virtually redundant, they're not, they just seem softer compared to the brutish Perique; it's very sharp! The others compliment the flavour nicely; the Burley's fairly formidable, and the Virginia and Cavendish work together to form more of a sweet base; this sweetness seems to develop as the bowl burns, by the final third it's beautiful. The fact this has no added flavours makes it a perfect blend for a smoker like me, who enjoys natural blends, more-so than cased ones, to sit and savour the rawness of the smoke. It gives a good burn that only needs odd re-lights and sparse tamping. I wasn't sure what to expect with the room-note, it seems to get a few tolerable results, but I enjoy it. The nicotine's a bit above medium; better in the morning, for me.

This is a brilliant blend, I love it!

Highly recommended.

A wonderfully fruity and spicy smoke. The Perique leads with it's dark fruit and spice. At first the nutty, earthy Burley tries to keep up then fades to the background with the sweet Virginias. I'm a bit of a Perique junkie and I find this blend to be a nice fix. Very satisfying on multiple levels. Burns cool, quite often with only one relight toward the end. A lovely smoke.

Medium in body and taste. No added flavoring. Burn is near perfect.

Thanks to a fellow pipe smoker I had the opportunity to ride that train. Very strong blend, with it's cavendish fraction almost not detected. Still, it's somewhat buttery taste combined with the peppery perique, gives a sweet smoke all the way through the bowl. It tends to smoke better towards the end. Highly recommended for perique lovers.

I first bought this a couple of years ago and when I opened the pack it smelt a bit acidic, almost vinegary.

With trepidation I filled my pipe and didn't enjoy it one bit but I persevered with it a week or so later and it was sort of OK but nothing to shout home about.

A week or so again I tried it and WOW !! This tobacco was absolutely lovely.

I don't know if it's me and it takes a couple of pipefuls of it to get used to it but this tobacco is absolutely a first class blend

Taking the Night Train is not just a recommendation but a must.

This is First Class Travel ! ... and no-one with a pipe should be without it!

This tobacco is so, so lovely, I fall in love with Lady N all over again every time I smoke it.

What a surprise! And what a crumble kake. I cut it with a sharp knife, then I rub the tobacco. Wonderful smoke. I can define this "a full smoke experience", a perfect blend for me, with the cavendish almost unnoticeble. There are few tobacco that once the tin is open you cannot alternate with others. This is one of them: I have smoked the entire tin bowl after bowl. Essentially this is a VaPer blend, but the burley and cavendish are giving it a PLUS in terms of taste. While the Briar Fox is a starting point , this is a final point. Very very good!

Wow, this was a revisit for me and I don't know what happened since, but I fell hard for this tobacco. It has that old time Va, Burley and the bit of spice from the Perique and I enjoy smelling the smoke as much as I enjoy the taste. Goodness, I have really been enjoying it. I burned up a 2 oz. can and immediately ordered some 8 oz. cans. This is a crumbly cake and it crumbles easy. Even Steve Fallon could get this one broken down. Okay, try this old blend. It's been around a while and should be around a long time.

I'll admit upfront that I'm not a fan of high concentrations of Perique in a blend. I bought this on a whim while "working my way through C&D" burley blends fully knowing that this did not use perique as a condiment so I'll adjust my review accordingly. I really like Old Joe Krantz and that lead me to believe I could up my perique intake, Nope.

Fantastic presentation of crumble cake, smells like oatmeal cookies when inhaling from the tin. It does not overwhelm in the nicotine department, I rate it as a solid medium. Slightly spicy from the perique and also slightly sweet from the Virginia's, I could not detect any burley in this, probably due to my taste buds being overwhelmed by the perique.

To the perique lovers out there I would rate this 4 stars, for me two stars.

This blend is phenomenal. Comes in a very nice pressed cake, and the tin note is cereal, raisins, ...basically raisin bran. Easily prepared, I simply tore off some chunks, rubbed out, packed and smoked. The moisture was perfect. The smoke is creamy and smooth; nutty, notes of hay, oats, dark fruit (raisin/figs), light pepper, and a pleasant sweetness. The nic hit is just a notch above medium, and it makes a great morning blend with a cup of black coffee. This is one of the best blends I've tried from C&D, thusfar, and it's definitely going into my regular rotation. Highly recommended.

Summary: Looks like a granola bar, tastes like a granola bar, and provides a flavorful sweet smoke that has enough strength to be interesting.

"Night Train" takes a familiar mixture of Virginias, Perique and Burley and makes good use of the brighter, sweeter Virginias to create a wholesome flavor with moderate nicotine. The cake, flecked with gold and tan speckled in brown, gives off the fruity smell of Perique merged with the sweet hay scent of bright Virginia.

When lit, this smell intensifies along with a spicy, sweet and broad flavor. The guiding force behind this blend is complementary flavors, and the Virginias and Perique work together to guide this like the raisins in a granola bar. The Burley, like scattered nuts and grains, rounds out the flavor while the bright Virginia takes on a honey-like role. It is delicious and wholesome like the best of the health food turned confection that a good granola bar can be, but also, like all earth grains type foods, has a single dimension: sweet grain and fruit.

For this reason, "Night Train" -- while delicious -- serves best as an occasional smoke. It is not all that interesting because of its singular dimension, but for the pipe sipper with an all-day task, creates a wonderful background aura through its gentleness and outright deliciousness. I wish this came in flake form, as the crumbly and dusty cake seems onerous to me, where a rubbed-out flake being in leaf and not partially sawdust form lights better and burns more consistently.

As I am trying to go alot of C&Ds burley blends, I found this one lacking in Burley. I typically enjoy Latakia blends, but recently started to enjoy the earthy robust taste of Burleys...the blend just has to deliver in the Burley dept. This one unfortunately does not. This is much more a Vir/Per...and in this category, there are much better choices. If you are searching and experimenting to find why C&D is so well known for their Burleys, you might want to skip this one. I am giving it 2 stars, because it is smokeable...on the sweeter side with a mild to medium taste profile (again, I like bolder blends). Wife found the room note OK.

Some said it should be categorized "Va/Per", and I can't really contradict to that, but may offer an alternative: "Bur/Per"... nah... also close, but not quite... it's a Va/Bur/Per through and through for me, with all of the three components taking an equal share in the resulting smoking experience - which I find to be quite unique and interesting, albeit totally NOT what I expected this to be.

Nice tin note of oat, raisins, figs, pleasant sweetness and spice. Somewhat similar to Oak Alley, albeit Night Train being more sweet than spicy. In the smoke this is interesting! A bold, yet quite sweet and richly fruity and spicy flavour... the Burleys give that bold foundation, as well as rich earth and oats.. the Virginias - coming in various forms - are sweet and earthy and I feel whenever I hit a chip of the broken VA flake it's like a piece of toffee, mhmmm! The Perique's presence is strong imho, especially in its fruitiness, which may be a result of the intereplay of the Virginas and the Perique, because the pepperiness is moderate, albeit everpresent. The Cavendish is well hidden and doesn't distract, but I suppose it adds to the creamy mouthfeel? I also suspect a hint of fruity flavoring maybe... just a wild guess though!

Lower spectrum of "Medium to Strong" - packs a punch, but doesn't overwhelm and can be smoked twice in a row without causing faiting as other C&D burleys do - and still.. I hestitate calling this a Burley blend... nor a Va/Bur... it's a Va/Bur/Per... through and through!

Excellent crumble cake, brindle and black tobaccos with a sweet earthy tin note. Could just whiff on this for a long time. Rubs out to perfection, packs easily and takes fire well after initial char. Taste is sweet, earthy, fermented fruit, nuts and a bit of leather. The tobaccos play well together but I feel the perique is the main player throughout the most of the smoke. Consistent flavor throughout. Nicotine hit is medium for me. For me I like this late in the day, but sometimes I feel bold and start the day with a bowl and several cups of Death Wish Coffee. I seem to get quite a bit done on the farm after that morning session. Solid 4 for me. Will buy more, soon. As for usual with me C&D never disappoints!

Bold Burley, very natural tasting bright Virginias, spicy and slightly fruity Perique, and a minute amount of smooth Cavendish. I find as I smoke this that I don't really pick out the individual tobaccos as much as focus on how they all come together. It tastes nutty, bready, spicy and occasionally sweet. Like all of C&D's crumble kakes it performs very well and smokes well with moisture which I prefer for blends with Perique. There are many candidates for a full-strength last smoke of the day but Night Train is amongst my favorites.

I'm going to do my damnedest not say anything like ‘I've been working my way through Cornell and Diehls blends' though I sort of have been, it's not that methodical. I'm also going to try really hard not say which pipes I've smoked this blend in, because, seriously, in my Becker oom Paul it was effervescent and in my family era rough root five dot Sasieni billiard it was merely bubbly, we're really just name dropping our favorite pipes, and it is kind of personal preference. Sure, a hot burning Virginia flake is going to taste different in a pot than a stack, but if you're reading tobacco reviews you likely already have your preferences. You know, it's weird, I really like this but the one guy (not looking at site right at the moment, sorry one guy, I know you have a name) was right, the first charring light of the first bowl in a decidedly average Il Ceppo poker tasted just like soap. I have been through most of the Gawiths and other Lakeland tobacco companies and never understood what the hell the ‘lakeland soap taste' was all about, but yeah, this tasted just like saying the eff word to a nun. You get a little Ivory/Dial flavor on the second light and then it starts tasting like a Va/Per. I'm not quite sure what it is, but something is a bit different, in a good way, The burly and Cavendish are barely noticeable (I tend not to like much or any of either) I mean, for instance, I really like escudo and I'm pleasantly surprised when I find a Va/Per that tastes like escudo, but damn, I might as well have a shelf full of escudo you know what I mean? I'm not looking for the holy grail or chasing a dragon, I just like taking a taste of everything on the menu.

I like krumble Kakes, I like the taste of this, I'll probably get more when I go through these four ounces, but it's going to take a while to do that. I'm guessing this next statement happens with a lot of cornell and diehls blends but --- I find myself mixing this with other things. Particularly C&D Pirate Kake and Oriental Silk, I don't have a formula, I just do it by eye and feel --- the other two are kind of boring by themselves, this isn't, but still, the three together makes for an unusual and stimulating unconventional kind of English leaning towards Va/Per with Orientals depending on how you mix. I'm going to try this in a new pipe I have coming from Italy, new as in a different kind of pipe. It's a regular Radice Chubby pipe but with a large cooler chamber in it's stubby shank. I think the guy, Luca, at neatpipes designed it, Radice makes em for him. Check it out, Aerobilliard.

I bought this stuff and let it sit for a month.... Holy crap. Amazing. The taste was great, had a very nutty flavor in it, like almonds. And the smell was surprisingly sweet. I love this stuff. Night Train was strong, too. Make sure you are sitting down when you smoke this stuff. The smoke lasted a long time as well. Took 1 hour and 15 minutes to finish it. If you like blends like Billy Budd, Three Oaks Syrian, Habana Daydream and other smokey flavors and are looking for something that has a good mix of natural smokey flavor and sweet, then you should try this.

UPDATE: Just a fair warning, this tobacco is loaded with nicotine. It makes me a little bit dizzy when I have had too much. So if you get this and dont like nicotine overload, then just take it easy when you smoke it.

I'm newer to the world of burleys. Off the top of my head I've smoked Prince Albert, and Haunted Bookshop which is admittedly all my experience. I know that it can be used in aromatics since Burley is great at absorbing flavors. I frequently see it paired with Perique in C&D blends like this one. I have to admit going in that this is an interesting tobacco to smoke.

The tin art reminds me of a title screen for an old black and white, western flick. Mostly the type face buy also the train hiding in the background. But we are interested in the tobacco itself. When you open up you see a mostly light brown cake with a smell of citrus and tang from the Virginias, nice toasted sugar from the Cavendish, nutty oats from the Burleys, and some raisinyness from the Perique. Peeling and crumbling into your pipe is easy and lighting is about average.

When lit the Burley is what I taste first. I find it light, and tastes of oats and nuts. The Virginias taste sweet and citrusy giving a little tang every now and again. There is brown sugar and toastyness coming from the Cavendish. The Perique is obvious, giving characteristic spice in the retrohale and dark fruit notes in the smoke. Like Haunted Bookshop, the slower you smoke this, the more flavor you will get.

The taste is a medium. It's not overwhelming, but enough to keep me interested. The strength is medium-strong. I don't feel it but I know other people who say this can pack a punch especially without a full stomach. The room note is normally a subjective thing, but Burley will not win us new friends from non smokers. Burley is a key component in a lot of major cigarette brands so if they don't like the smell of cigs they won't like this. All in all a good blend to wind down with at the end of a day. I give this 3 stars.

Normally, I am not a big fan of Burley anything in a pipe because it reminds me of cigarettes. This is the first blend with Burley that I can say I truly enjoy, as in I would buy again. I taste the Virginias, Burley, and Perique with a sweetness that is reminiscent of the sweet/sour effect of an Oriental, however, this does not contain Oriental so that must be from the Cavendish. Non-aromatic Cavendish is something I tend to enjoy. This blend is balanced very well with the flavors so I must recommend it to anyone who enjoys these types of blends. I prefer to smoke this in the evenings while drinking scotch.

I'll give it two stars because the tobacco is high quality, but tastes like high-quality shredded rubber tires to me. I love most C&D blends I've tried. Some are my very favorites, even heavy perique blends such as Cajun Kake and Exclusive. And I like their burleys, too, but somehow the combination of everything in this is just not my cup of tea.

UPDATE . . . Jar stamp indicates that it is at the 2 yr 10 month date. Coffee notes are not as prevalent, dark dried fruit notes are present but less so than my memory of this new. Everything else is about where it was. The blend has gotten softer and rounder overall. I view this as improved overall a very good blend. No change in overall rating at this time. Still recommend and worth trying.

This is a very good VA/Per,etc. blend. I get a little slightly bitter sweetness like a caramel or toffy flavor in a robust coffee. In fact, it reminds me of Starbucks Kati Kati Coffee with its bold flavors and various notes. This actually makes me want a cup of coffee every time I smoke it. The VA's are sweet and remain in the background, The Perique adds dried fruits picked up on the retro-hale. The Burley adds that slightly nutty characteristic too. The Cav. is in the background as it should be I think I pick up some sweetness there too. Overall a very good blend that has a noticeable amount of vitamin N. to keep you satisfied. It will bite if pushed and if I try to smoke more then 3 bowls a day I do start to feel it. I think this has aging potential and I have put away a few oz. to see how it will fair in a few more months/years.

Good VaBurPer featuring the bright flue cured VAs for a high sweet note.

Similar in strength to OJK but sweeter and less bottom heavy given the lack of Red VA and Dark Burley found in Old Joe.

I smoke a lot of this stuff as a staple in a a pretty varied rotation and it's one of my faves. It reminds me a lot of 3 Friars but is a bit heavier on the perique, and therefore strength, to my tastes.

I fully rub it out so it loads like a ribbon cut.

I enjoy it most in a corn cob pipe. It can get hot and ashy in some briars.

I think fans of VaPers and codger Burleys will both enjoy this one.

This is a complex and interesting blend. It is all natural, with no flavoring or additives that I can detect. Obviously that doesn't mean there are none used, but none that I pick up - this is just about as natural a tobacco as you will find.

To my palate it is very VA forward, with burley way in the background and just a enough Perique to jazz it up a little. It is mildly sweet, along the lines of brown sugar, honey, and graham crackers, but the burley and perique perfectly temper the sweetness to create a well balanced and never cloying blend which still has a lovely Virginia dominated character. You can think of this in terms of a hoppy beer, if you wish, with the zesty, bitter hops balancing the sweetness of the malts.

This blend comes pressed in a brick, and rubs up with great ease pretty much however finely you desire. I tend to rub it out to a "fish food" consistancy, much like Old Joe Krantz, but sometimes also leave it just slightly chunkier for a slower burn. When fully rubbed, it reaches perfect moisture in a matter of around 15 minutes or so. It comes a bit moister than most C&D blends, quite likely due to being pressed.

With a 1lb block of the stuff available for less than 30 bucks currently at many online retailers, this blend is a true bargain. It possesses enough depth of flavor, richness, and strength to satisfy me, and offers a slow, satisfying burn. There are many blends I enjoy as much as this, but there are very few that surpass it.

I will say that the first time I tried it was from a 2oz tin, though I'm currently working through a pound of the stuff. The first two or three smokes rubbed me the wrong way and I didn't really "get" it. I found it had an astringent and harsh flavor for the first few minutes before settling down. These days I never notice that quality, and find it a thoroughly pleasant smoke from start to finish. If at first you don't like it, give it several more tries; you may be like me and learn to love it.

While it may not be for everyone, I truly love this tobacco. Four stars on all points.

I bought a one pound brick of this stuff based on the reviews here and I have to disagree with the majority, I think this is pretty nasty stuff. To me it tastes like cardboard or maybe a paper bag, real harsh smoke, tons of nicotine. I can't keep it going, I have to put it out and recover a few minutes, light and puff a few times, put it out, repeat. It almost makes me green from the nicotine, it's four star stuff if you like that kind of thing.

To calm it down I tried to mix it half and half with some Peter Stokkebye Balkan Supreme which I though could use a little kick, but instead I got a mix that tasted like smokey cardboard and it was still over the top in the nicotine department.

On the plus side, it may work well as a natural insectiside for your house plants LOL.

One other thing I really disliked/hated about this tobacco is that when smoking it straight I had an aftertaste of cigarettes, and as an ex cigarette smoker that really turns me off. When mixed with Balkan Supreme I didn't get that taste much at all, perhaps a further blending with some Super Value Natural Cavendish which has no nicotine and no taste would thin it out a bit.

However, if you smoke cigarettes and are looking for a stronger nicotine punch with the pipe this may fit the bill. Also, it may be a good smoke to go out and join the cigarette smokers during their work break because you don't need to smoke this very long before you are ready to go back to work. But for me the pipe should smell and taste great, and give you a nicotine kick but not a slam in the stomach. They should rename this stuff to 'Sledge Hammer' or 'Grim Reefer'.

What a wonderful blend Night Train is. It burns well straight out of the can and produces an abundance of flavors throughout the bowl. The touch of perique adds to the complexity rather than stealing the show.

Strong tobacco, High nicotine level, sweet, spicy and little fruity, presented in pressed block.The smoke flavor is excellent; it remind me the flavor of Briar Fox,

Night Train requires an advanced (very slow) smoking technique. I would highly recommend this tobacco for veteran pipe smokers who enjoy nicotine overdose.

Aromatic and new pipe smokers will not enjoy Night Train. same with me since I cant absorb that much nicotine in one bowl.

Night Train wine is nasty stuff. Night Train the C&D tobacco is top notch stuff. I've been sampling a lot of different brands and blends trying to find the one I just can't get enough of and this is one of them. I've been trying a lot of English blends lately and I just can't handle the Latakia anymore so I decided I'd sample some VaPer blends instead. I bought this one and a few other from C&D's long list and out of the ones I've been working on this is by far my favorite. The ratio of the Va's and the burleys are great and it's got just enough perique to give it a little spice on the tongue. I find it has medium flavor and I noticed while I was puffing away that it has something I haven't noticed in a few of the blends I've tried. Nicotine. The nicotine level is great. I've totally cut out cigarettes since I started puffing on Night Train. I loved rubbing out the little chunk I broke off the first time and watching the tobacco expand into a nice pile of VaPer tastiness. I got another one of C&D's pressed blends a while back it didn't rub out as well as this one does. And it burns great from start to finish. I had to relight it 3 times because I had to force myself to put my pipe down 3 times instead of sitting there and smoking it up in one go. It burns great down to a nice gray ash. My only problem is that it burns kind of fast and I'm always a little sad when I finish my bowl. Gonna have to get a bigger pipe so I can make the experience last longer. Great smoke. I'm gonna order a pound of it next payday.

Wow, this one is different. The blend is first cut, then pressed int a solid brick. It looks like a plug, but does not need to be sliced. The brick is mottled in color, with a fairly high percentage of dark leaf showing, and has a rather pungent, fermented aroma. I approached it by pulling some off the brick, then rubbing it out. I also tried tearing small pieces to insert into the pipe. This was very hard to light, and to keep lit. When rubbed out, it lit easily, with a first impression of solid Perique. I mean, head swimming time. This is not an eye-opener for me, but rather an evening smoke. The initial blast mellowed out soon into a rich, smooth smoke with some tingle from the Perique, and a sweet balance from the Virginias. There was also, at times, a slight cigar note which I attribute to the dark Burley present in the blend. This is the most butt-kicking blend I have tasted from Craig. It stays quite pleasant until near the bottom of the bowl, then becomes a bit stronger. I feel this should be enjoyed in a smaller pipe. Definitely not for the beginner, nor for the faint of heart.

This is a Burley blend but unlike any Burley I have smoked before. this is as satisfying as most of the full English blends I usually smoke. First impression is Perique and I do mean Perique. The Perique is very strong but does not overpower the blend. the under tone seems like latakia but there is none in this blend. About half way through the bowl it smothes out and the Perique has lessened and the other flavors really begin to show. there is no bite and the blend is not exactly what I would call smooth but it is not harsh either. At the end a bit of sourness like most English blends and the next bowl I smoke will be in a small clay, this baccy has a nicotine hit. I would advise for a new smoker to wait a while before trying this and if you like your nicotine light stay away..

I was fortunate enough to receive a small sample of this tobacco from an online acquaintance, as I would otherwise not likely have decided to try it. I smoked the entire sample and made some notes for myself before looking to see what was in it; I was quite surprised at the ingredients when I did look. It was clear to me that this is a very unusual blend, very different from many others I?ve tried; but it was still an eye-opener. The aroma of my small sample is highly complex and dynamic, difficult to wholly take in during one sitting. It includes sweet, leathery, soapy/floral, and spicy notes, with spicy and ?exotic? being probably the strongest overall. It arrived as a slice of hard, pressed crumble cake about 1? wide. The leaf color runs across very dark and medium browns, with about 5 ? 10% lighter tans. The moisture is rather low, but not as dry as most C&D tobaccos. The cake is a bit tough, but packing is easy once it?s broken up. Lighting is easy, the flame causing a mound of very puffy, grey ash to quickly grow on the surface, and during the bowl I need an average number of relights. My general impression of the first third of the bowl is spicy and complex ? the flavor is as dynamic as the smell. The spice is very strong, a Perique flavor that just barely refrains from dominating but which is far from unpleasant. Under this is a sweet & dark note, with what I could swear is Latakia as well. There is a richness and fullness here that, to me, screams ?English?. The impression I get of the top notes is ?brown? and constantly changing. The smoke is not harsh, but not smooth either, and there is no bite or moisture thus far. In the second third, the Perique is not quite as forceful, but I would still describe the smoke as spicy. The dark, sweet, and rich notes are a bit stronger, perhaps from contrast, providing a satisfying smoke. There is still a great deal of complexity in the flavor. It seems to have smoothed out more as well, though there is a small amount of moisture present. With the final 1/3 the spice has finally melded with the other flavors, while remaining strong. The overall taste is dark and rich, though not quite as sweet, and I still want to call this a (semi)English blend. There is even a bit of sourness towards the very end that I normally associate with Latakia. The bottom of the pipe is dry and clean, and I never noticed any bite throughout the bowl. One other thing I notice, when I try to stand up, is that there is a good amount of nicotine in this; I plan to use a much smaller pipe next time! I only noticed this when I was done with the bowl. Overall, the flavor and complexity make this an excellent blend, as satisfying as most of the full English blends I usually frequent. Imagine my surprise to find out that this is a Burley blend! I can?t stand most Burley, and would have sworn that this was a modified English/Latakia type tobacco. Where?s the harshness? The person who sent me the sample also said that it reminded him of Latakia, so I?m pretty sure I?m not crazy, but? ME, liking a Burley blend?? Anyway, I highly recommend this to anyone who dislikes most Burley, or who prefers Latakia; I?m glad I tried it, and plan to keep some around.

Virginia dominant VaBur with a healthy dose of Perique. Smoking this, I always think it'd be better as a Burley dominant blend, but that tobacco already exists and is named Old Joe Krantz.

Spongy, leaf pancake bar you'd expect from C&D. I feel the strength of Night Train is oversold and rate it medium to strong.

It's useful mixing with Burleys you feel need more backbone, but then you could just buy better Burleys and save the time and money.

It's ok. That pretty much sums up what I feel about C&D's whole catalog. They occasionally get one right, but their Virginias just aren't very good and most of their blends are dull.

Presentation is crumble cake, with nearly equal amounts of light, medium, and dark brown strands. Firm, but easy to work with. I like breaking off a chunk with my fingers, cramming it into my pipe, and topping with some of the broken strands. Moisture level is perfect out of the tin.

Perique is at the forefront, spicy/peppery/fruity. The Virginias add sweetness and a touch of citrus. I'm getting a good burley backbone, but not a big nutty flavor. On retrohale, burley is a bit more obvious and perique is a bit spicier. Perique spice/pepper seems to build as the bowl progresses.

Good stuff. I like it, but I don't love it. There's a bit too much perique for my tastes.

Night Train turned out to be a little different than I had imagined. I think it was a combination of some of the reviews I had read, maybe a promotional blurb or two, and the name. I was expecting a bold and powerful smoke with an onslaught of nicotine and Perique, but the experience is of a gentler variety. This is no speeding train, but rather a genuine, solid smoke.

While the tin is plain Jane, lacking C&D's often humorous art, the cake is magnificent. This is primarily bright leaf, with a beautiful yellow appearance interspersed with the dark Perique. All constituents are easily identified. It handles beautifully of coarse and can be smoked right away. A little bit of seasoning in an opened tin, resealed, really helps develop the flavor. I had the faintest whiff of strawberry when I first popped the tin. The Perique however dominates the tin aroma, and the other tobaccos are mild and sweet.

When I first smoked this I found it a little flat, with a bit of bite, but certainly not steamy. The bit of drying alleviated these issues. While this is VaBurPer, it's Virginia forward. Really, the combination of the flue cured and Cavendish dominate, with some bright fruit, some sweetness, and the barest traces of steamed sugars. The Perique is largely absent in the flavor, other than a slight pepper that is more noticeable as a feeling than a taste, but pops up on the retrohale. The burley too does not add much to flavor, but rather seems to dull the other parts some, but may contribute to a slightly doughy taste that lasts throughout the bowl. Part of my failure to get much burley may be the other blends I've been smoking lately, chiefly C&D monster burleys like Big N' Burley. The taste does intensify a little toward the end.

At times I get similar tastes to Briar Fox. Like that blend, this is quite smooth. A very nice tobacco, and a welcome interlude relative to some of their bigger products. In just about all respects this is of medium characteristic: body, strength, and taste. I'll visit this again, but later down the line, as the train I'm on is through their vast product catalog. A solid three, but just not enough steam to stand out as a four star blend.

The smell of this stuff reminds me of litter box with just a hint of cat turd...which isn't a good thing. But I know not to judge any tobacco via the smell of it out of the tin. Packing is great with the crumble cake and the moisture content was just right.

How does this taste? Amazing. There is so much going on here it's difficult to put into words. I was really impressed by how much flavor is packed into this. I get a wonderful taste of clove, raisin, cocoa and coffee. This is one of those tobaccos that you have 'buyers regret' when you first open it and smell it and it makes you realize how wrong your initial judgement can be.

This is an excellent, flavorful blend.

Wife note is good too!

I was sent a sample of this and really loved it. It was strong, earthy and had a nice sweetness to it. The leaf was of high quality and it both lit and burned well; these are things I have come to expect from C&D. It helps that all their blends come to you at the perfect moisture level. If you like C & D blends, then I think you will like this. That said, Virginias from C & D tend to be more on the earthy side and less the grassy hay sweetness that you would get from say, Sam Gawith, Dunhill, et.al.

So if you are more into that earthy type of Virginia and like a good bit of burley backbone to go with it, then this is your blend. I want to give this one four stars, but the fact that I smoked my sample in big bowls meant I only really got 3 bowls out of this and don't think that is a good enough sample to give out four stars at this point. I will buy more of this one though and will revisit this review later.

Wow! Have my tastes changed. I remember trying this back in the late nineties and I remember thinking - meh!

But here it is 2015 and I have retried it and I have to say as far as VaPers go this could be one of my favorites.

Smooth, complex and semi sweet - what more could you ask for? For those Folks who love VaPers and are looking for something different - give this one a try!

Not much I can add that had not been said already. My personal take is one of highly favoring this over most Vapers thanks to the Kake preserving the freshness of the Perique. I too think it smokes best in a larger cob pipe that will keep things cool and handle the moisture of the Kake. It's a very complex blend that I enjoy with strong coffee. It does bring a vision of relaxing in an old steam engine train coach chugging along in the old south on a sultry summer night. I can see myself puffing on my old cob or clay under the lamplight as the scenery goes by under the light of a full moon and the strong smells of the night blend with my pipe smoke. Nice vision, classic 4 star blend.

Tin note = fermenting hops. Nice quality kake without excess moisture. Crumbles and dries quickly. Slightly persnickety relight is followed by an amazing sweet and nutty flavor. Burns cooler and longer than a typical Burley blend. The smoothest Burley blend that I've ever smoked. Flavor is consistent throughout the bowl and has a wonderful beer-like aftertaste; perique zing builds a bit, but stays mild enough that I can smoke a bowl without a drink. Flavor is mild enough that you want to tamp for taste. Good to the bottom of the bowl; smokes to fine ash. N level is medium+. C&D sure knows how to make great kakes. Imagine a kake shelf with Night Train on one end and Pirate Kake on the other, Cajun Kake and Bowlegged Bear in the middle- fantastic!

Very acrid tasting when first lit, this blend does begin to develop a flavor after the first few puffs. Unfortunately that flavor is one of a sweet soap. I have smoked this blend (rubbed) in a virgin cob, a meer and a briar mostly used with virginias. In each and every case the opening fruitiness quickly vanishes and I'm left with a soapy aftertaste. The nic does kick in on the second half of the bowl, and adding insult to injury left me with a sour stomach.

On the plus side it was easy to keep lit and burned very cool. A slow smoking blend.

The burley and perique add a very satisfying counterpoint to the sweetness of the virginias, which are playing lead fiddle in this harmonious band. Ok. Night Train is a blend that is not for everyone. I'll say that first.

When i first got my little cake of this bad boy, i packed a bowl and smoked some. At first note, i got some nutty, tangy, and spicy flavors in this.

If you would have asked me what i thought of the Night Train when i first tried it, i would have said "It's not that great".

However! I've smoked more of it, and it really does grow on you. The more i ride the Night Train, the more i like it.

The amount of nicotine packs a powerful punch, so if you don't like nicotine buzzes, or a high amount nicotine i wouldn't recommend this blend for you. You can taste mostly the burley & perique in here. However, at the end i have to say it's a very good blend that has a very natural taste with no added extras etc.

I would recommend you at least give this a shot!

Night Train seems to have me thinking in musical terms for some reason. This one is for all of you bass-heads out there. Night Train hits all of the low notes with gusto and power. Deep , Dark , Full with amped up power, there is nothing subtle about it. I appreciate and enjoy quality bass but prefer my blends more balanced with the highs and mids still present and clear. In that way I find Night Train to be a bit one-dimensional but it is certainly a high quality dimension. Smooth , cool smoking and with a generous portion of ole Vitamin N, Night Train is definitely a must try and with the low price is certainly a absolute bargain. I find it a touch monotonous and therefore I don't find it appropriate as an all day smoke but as an end of the night smoke with your favorite libation it will not fail to satisfy.

If you like your tobacco 'natural' without any added distraction of flavours, essences or aromas and with a nice nicotine content then Night Train should suit your requirements. I find the pressed cake form of production very agreeable as it tends to keep the flavours of the tobacco longer without drying out as quickly as many flakes do and Night Train I feel is a prime example of this.

A bright mixture of Va, Burley and Cavendish pressed and presented in a very appealing brick/cake form. No distracting aroma of cherry, chocolate, whiskey etc, the pure, raw flavour of the tobacco, most notably the Burley, with the addition of the nose tingeling sensation of the added Perique. For any smoker who is just making the transition from cigarettes to pipe then I would suggest you try Night Train. For seasoned pipe smokers this may be a little bland and unidimensional but decent enough for a change of pace if you're a lat freak like myself.

I'm really not very good at detecting room notes of tobaccos I smoke but the taste and strength of Night Train I would say are up in the high medium to full range. The nicotine content is very noticable without being overly so. All in all a decent change of pace for the lover of the more smoky latakia blends.

It's sweet, it's musty, it's spicy: these words are pithy descriptors when it comes to this tobacco."WOW" and "symphony" are more like it. I just had to give it my highest recommendation not only for burley/VA/Per fans, but also for lovers of fine, quality tobaccos in general. There were a host of things going on in my bowl while this was burning (and it burned beautifully into an ivory ash), none of which I can adequately describe like the other reviewers here. I can definitively say that I am more of a perique lover than I initially thought, and that I have Night Train to thank for this discovery (of course). Actually, I thank you C&D, and more specifically Mr. Tarler--please don't go anywhere anytime soon.

Received my bulk as a pressed brick that was rather dry and easy to separate. However, it's hard to leave as chunks for loading, especially into small bowled pipes, and when rubbed out you don't get what I consider a broken flake. Smoked dry and cool with a rich taste and enjoyabel aftertaste. I normally prefer true flakes and perhaps my packing technique resulted in my multiple relights.

This is the first blend that the whole "symphony" concept that other reviewers talk about made sense to me, all the ingredients of this blend are noticeable during the whole smoke with out any of the overpowering the other, this is not for the novice it takes some experience to appreciate this blend the perique presence is great the sharpness of the virginias are there the whole time along with their respective sweetness, the burley give this blend the presences to hang around your palate, the cavendish is there but the proportions of it has to be minuscule, the nicotine is great, I'm actually scare of this blend because I probable found my all dayer blend and is too soon for that in my pipe smoking journey, the only sensible thing for me to do is to buy as much as I can afford and start stashing away. The tin that I've been smoking has 4 years in cellar, the preparation is simple tear off and stuffed in your pipe light it and start puffing, but be warned smoke slowly if you want to appreciate the all the components, smoke fast and the bite tongue will get you. This blend makes me wonder why C&D do not offer more of their blends pressed?.

WOW.

Now that is what I'm talkin' about. This is a very good blend in my eyes. You get a perfect balance between the four component tobaccos, with expert consideration being given to their individual characteristics. This is the product of master blending at it's best. And to think this blends price is so affordable, that you can buy it in 3-5 pound lots with as little damage to your wallet as a man has the right to expect for quality this high.

Taste is full and rich. Sweetness with just that perfect edge of bitter. Sometimes tasting exactly of caramel taken just a bit farther than normal on the stove. Dark and delicious is the flavor. There is plenty of nuance and complexity here if you sip slowly and savor the smoke.

Vaper lovers will probably love this if they like the stronger blends. All others, should be prepared for a serious tobacco with a fair bit of Nicotine. But we all like it a little rough now and again, don't we?

Buy pounds and this will age with grace.

With my purchases of C&D blends being well researched here before I invest, I have failed to experience one of Tarler's creations which does not please me. This one goes straight to the top of the list. I (in my most unqualified opinion) consider this to be a variant of the VAPer class. The addition of the burley along with a heavier portion of Perique kicks Night Train up a notch on the flavor scale in comparison to, say, Escudo. I first smoked this in a Barling saddle pot and only found it somewhat difficult to keep lighted. Upon the first few puffs an Escudo-like flavor was immediately evident but that quickly changed as the spicier aspect of Night Train came on full force (and I was drawing lightly). The burley seems to round out the Virginias nicely giving, at times, a buttery taste. I love this blend. My non-smoker wife pronounced the room note as "Very nice" (but I have been bombing her with Latakia based blends for so long she might be biased toward any change). At around half the price of Escudo (which I will still buy whenever I find it), this goes into the once/twice per week spot in rotation. Not an all day blend unless one has a rather placid livelihood as it will relax one quite well, too well. I also appreciated a burn lasting well over an hour and a half.

Night train is a very enjoyable smoke however, it was a bit hard to keep lit when smoked immediately from the tin. After a day or two, the tobacco dried to a perfect temp. and improved noticably. I really enjoy this blend and highly recommend it to the English fan.

UPDATE 2/10/09: I've found this smokes wonderfully in a 1950's vintage Kaywoodie 1/4 bent meerschaum prince. For some reason the shallow, wide bowl brings out the flavor for me a lot better than a tall narrow bowled churchwarden that I had originally started smoking this in. Try a few different shapes out for yourself, there is a noticeable difference.

ORIGINAL REVIEW 1/27/09: When I first got the 1 oz chunk of Night Train I was skeptical. It really didn't have a specific smell to it other than tobacco and maybe a hint of sweet spiciness. At that point I had set myself up for disappointment. I was impressed with the way the "block" rubbed out into larger flakes. The moisture was perfect. Those two facts don't make a good smoke.

When I first placed match to tobacco then all that predetermined disappointment chugged away with each puff of smoke. This is an absolutely flavor packed smoke that really gives you a good punch of perique that melds with the virginias. A wonderful spicy tartness developed as the bowl progressed with hints of sweetness here and there. One thing I must caution is that the nicotine kick will have your stomach doing flip flops if you don't have at least something in there to fight off the Vitamin N. I'm not very sensitive to nicotine but even this one had me wishing I had a snack before the smoke.

This is not an every day smoke for me but it has left enough of an impression that I get a hankering for it every now and then. This is my first tobacco I've tried from C&D and if this is a portent of their other offerings I will be stocking up with all I can.

A four star smoke that would be a perfect after dinner smoke especially after Thanksgiving or Christmas. If you enjoy perique this would be a wonderful place to step aboard. I wouldn't recommend this for the novice. If I had tried this while I was new to pipe smoking I probably would have quit right then and there. Now that I've got some years under my belt it helps me to appreciate this blend that much more.

I'm into cigars so I just had to try this stuff after all the reviews. I smoked a bowl when it first arrived four months ago, and was only mildly impressed. Maybe I smoked it too fast. Don't know how old this stuff was when I received it, but it seems to have improved with only a few months of aging. This morning I filled a mid-sized billiard about 3/4 full and fired 'er up. Yum! Can't wait to crack open my little Ball jar a year from now!

This tobacco smokes itself. Burns very smoothly and predictably, never had to relight. Can't emphasize enough to puff it very, very s-l-o-w-l-y during the first half-bowl. Too fast and the briar heats up and the taste gets too sharp. Nurse it and the virginias come through admirably, however half way down I found that a bit more aggression brings out a lot of richness.

The flavor is not overly complex, and it stays quite consistent throughout the bowl except for a bit more toastiness and creaminess near the bottom. The excellent aftertaste reminds me of when I was a kid visiting my uncles' barn, with the smell of old hay, manure and feed. You country boys will know what I mean.

I have very few vapers in my stash because I'm very particular about them, but this seems a perfect blend of sweet (VA) and bitter (PER), blessing the puffer with a really well-balanced, rich, strong smoke with absolutely no bite. I would love some suggestions for other great vapers.

Cigar smokers will love this one.

Rub it out, don't "chunk" it. This tobacco lights and burns well and the moisture content is right on. The taste, to me, is right on the money as well. I wasn't knocked down by the nicotine. It was noticeable, but not over the top.

All in all, this is a very good smoke that I recommend. The name sounds too much like bum wine though, and that probably drives some potential purchasers away. Nobody likes to picture themselves drinking Night Train from a bottle wrapped in a paper sack...

Great looking crumble cake, wonderful pouch aroma. Doesn?t need any time in the drying pan, just break it and pack it. As other reviewers have noted, it does benefit from ?sipping??smoaking this full-throttle like you would McClelland?s St. Jame?s Flake or Sam Gawith?s FVF will make your head reel (from the nicotine) and tongue burn into the bargain. Excellent for those late working nights?better than caffeine?or when you don?t have time to stop and eat. As a Va/Per, however, it?s not the tangy soul-mate experience my ** ne plus ultra (the McClelland St. James Flake). Night Train?s perique is there and the Virginia is there, but both are several cars down from the burley. The room note also has that (to me) unpleasant burley cigarette smoke reek. In fact, it reminds me alot of my overnight trips on AmTrack twenty years ago?a bit of mystery and a bit of discomfort. Probably not a trip I?ll make again.

I don't have much to add to the other reviews. Suffice it to say, this stuff is wonderful. It's presented as a crumble cake and smokes beautifully even when you just drop a chunk into your pipe, but you can rub it out if you want to. The flavor is deep, dark and sweet -- the effect is similar to that of a very dark chocolate. It'll bite if you're not careful, so go slowly. As others have pointed out, it's also got a serious nicotine punch (which I like). I can't quite give it four stars, but it is nonetheless well worth trying out.

Woooo Woooo, it?s time to hop on the train. The C & D Night Train that is.

Everyone who I talked to about this blend had the same response. ?Get ready, you?re in for a ride. I hope you like nicotine!!? And then they would usually chuckle. They all told me that this was one strong smoke and not to smoke it on an empty stomach.

I ordered a 4 oz sample of this from pipesandcigars.com and it arrived in brick form so I quickly started pulling it apart and rubbing it out a little bit. It seems to have the perfect moisture content straight away. I put this in a jar to let it rest a bit after rubbing it out and unfortunately I forgot about it. Now it?s about two months later and I think that it?s about time to break this stuff out and give it a whirl.

Right off the bat this blend gives off a sweet/sour fruity kind of taste. Delicious in my opinion. The spiciness of the Perique also kicks in very early on. Whoa, I can tell already that this one is going to pack a punch. This blend stays lit better than most that I have encountered. But watch out because if you start puffing on this too fast you will regret it. I let it get away from me one time when I was reading and not paying attention. Didn?t really notice anything except the spiciness of the Perique became almost overwhelming and the next thing I know my head starts to swirl from the nicotine. I actually had to put the pipe down and go to bed after that one.

If you take your time with this and sip on it very slowly it is a very, very good smoke. The sweet/sour flavor remains pretty consistent throughout the smoke but the sour takes over a bit near the end but not in a bad way. The spiciness of the Perique is present the whole way through and really adds to this blend I feel. It adds a kind of dark spice that plays in contrast to the sweet/sour flavor that I mentioned.

I assume that the room aroma is as strong as the blend because at one point my wife walked out on the porch and said, ?Man, that stuff smells like it would kick your butt!? She wasn?t far off of the mark.

While I wouldn?t recommend this to a new pipe smoker, if you have a few years under your belt I would highly recommend it. Some people enjoy the stronger stuff and some don?t. I think that I lie somewhere in between. While I will definitely keep this on hand for an occasional smoke there is no way that I could smoke this on a daily basis. For those of you who may be cigar smokers I would compare this blend to the La Flor Dominica Chisel. This is so far the strongest blend that I have smoked so far in this genre but it mixes strength with great taste and that is what sets it apart

I enjoyed this blend very much. It really reminds me of Briar Fox by the same company but with a little tang. I find the Perique really enjoyable until the last third of the bowl when things become as spicy as a curry.

I find the burn rate and temperature very much to my liking and packing was very easy.

The tang and faint sweetness is really tasty and I find this to be a nice change of pace from Briar Fox but not good enough to replace it in my rotation. I say this because I like Briar Fox or blends similar in strength as evening smokes and BF just has that wonderfull right kind of bitterness. Only a piper will understand that last sentence. lol

Its great being a piper isnt it???

Update++++ Okay, I got a half pound of this and another half pound of Old Joe Krantz through the mail and I've been smoking them both for about two weeks now. I've got two pipes locked into one groove, two into the other. This is the winner for me, not necessarily better tobacco as they are both simply top notch, but the better tasting of the two for my tastes. I have also found, as others, that it will work better in larger bowls about one third in to the end, slowly. This is an awesome tobacco, one that has almost a sour lemony/grassy flavor. My favorite of all time right now. Enjoy. Unlike my earlier review, I'm going to have to say the Virginias are really what make this, and possibly the cavendish burley, but I don't know what that is, man! probably sweeter than burley I'd guess.

Old Review: This one is definitely a toe tingler. What surprises me most is the Burley. I used to not like Burley much, due to my penchant for dramatically eye-watering draws off the pipe. Burley generally does not reward this eccentric behavior as it will taste a little sour. Well, my smoking technique has developed a little since those days. The tobacco's taste is much more sweet, rich and earthy if one employs a little restraint and draws slowly off the pipe. An amazing combination of tobaccos and flavors. Overall, one of the tastiest blends I've puffed on. I can't wait to get a larger amount as I only picked up an ounce and a half.

After smoking a lot of Haddos and Bayou Night these past few months, Night Train reminds me a bit more of traditional Va/P mixtures. Still, it is another wonderful and unique offering from C&D, and outclasses and outguns many of the European produced Va/Ps, which to me often come off as slightly tasteless or bland, not strong enough and unexciting.

No blandness here. There is a delicious fruity character which reminds me of apples or apple cider, and more than a touch of VA sweetness with some Burley body. And then of course, the big P.

The only caveat I have is it seems as if it could bite, so I go more gingerly than I do with Haddos or Bayou Night. No reason to buy expensive imported blends by the 1.75 oz with stuff like this around, as long as you like your VA/P to be on the strong side, as I do. Yes, I am sure proper aging will make it even better, as C&D tobaccos are all shipped a little young.

If Kajun Kake was a Milky Way Dark, This is a regular Milky Way. Sort of a variation on a theme. Don't get me wrong, I like it- Virginias and Perique make a sweet fruity spicey body- With the Burlies filling out body. comes pressed in a block, which I love. Much more fun to tear a chunk off. Smoke a chunk for those relaxing times, break one up for a quicker burning smoke. This can be strong- So watch yourself.

Well, another excellent blend from the good folks at C&D. A nice strong tobacco, naturally sweet from the Virginias used, a strong perique presence, which I like in some blends, but not others, and have yet to discover why that is... Whatever the reason, the chemistry is right on in this blend, and it is given perfect strength and balance by the Cavendish cut burley. I have to watch my pace with this one or I get a little bite, but that is true with me and almost any Virginia blend... I tend to be an aggressive puffer, but this blend is worth slowing down to enjoy!

I wonder if that's what Guns'n'Roses were smoking when they wrote "I'm on the Night Train, I love that stuff, I'm on the Night Train, and I can never get enough"? .... nah, probably not, but you will not go wrong with this blend if you like stout VaPers!

I may raise the rating after further contemplation but for now this is three and one fourth out of four. Too strong for me. Kudos to C & D for making this though.

4/11/2005: I cut this plug tobacco into small cubes. After drying a while in a zip-lock baggy this tobac is pretty good. A strong un-flavored straight ahead tobacco. An occasional indulgence. Three and one half stars.

Delicious, very strong blend. The Burleys hit first with toasty, oaty flavors, immediately followed by sweet rich Virginia and Cavendish. The Perique becomes more and more pronounced throughout the smoke.

Can bite just a tad if smoked too fast, but it's hard to slow this exquisite train down. Strongest nic hit of any blend in my rotation. Absolute four star blend.

Switching from latakia blends to VaPers, this is so far my favorite blend I have come across.

This blend tastes good in a MM corncob and it probably would taste good in a narrow chambered (around .81" inside diameter) briar.

I have tried this in a wide chambered briar and I was ready to throw out both the pipe and the blend! It brought out TOO much flavor and it became an almost aromatic in a wide chamber.

I guess if you love aromatics, you could smoke this in a wide chamber and be perfectly happy.

After finishing Burley Flake #3, I was eager to try another from C&D that had the strength and character of that blend, but with the VA and perique components coming through a little more. Night Train has fulfilled this need, and while the nicotine strength seemed a little more subdued compared to #3, it has steadily provided just the right amount in a group 3 or 4 bowl for me. The cake itself held together nicely, yet tenderly pulled apart without much difficulty for easy packing. Perfect. I cannot adequately describe the taste of the smoke, but I will say there is a nice "tangy" note to the tobaccos in smell and taste that I really enjoy. When the sweetness of the VA comes to the foreground, it really is a delight, especially when the burley and perique are such heavy notes in comparison. I finished this 2 oz. tin very quickly, and while I will be opening up a tin of Haunted Bookshop shortly, I am sure I will be coming back to this savory tobacco for a great burley blend. To close, every time I crave this tobacco, it brings to my mind a fine cabernet in taste and body; this, perhaps, would be the best way to characterize this tobacco. Thanks, Craig.

Make sure you have eaten well before you prepare to smoke this tasty crumble cake, made of Burley, Virginia and Perique, otherwise the massive amount of nicotine may make you dizzy. Complete and full flavor that will totally satisfy you. Very sweet at the beginning, as the bowl smokes down the sweetness progressively grants its place to other flavors of dried fruits. I believe this is more of a Burley tobacco and less of Virginia. Perique and Cavendish do not participate with high percentages in the Night Train. Just in order to provide a spicy and simultaneously sweet flavor. It cannot be smoked as an all-day tobacco. It requires calmness and relaxation in order to take pleasure in it. Ideal for those who seek something very “strong” in morning, so that they fill up their nicotine “deposits”.

Good American/VaPer. Forward facing Burley, but the Virginia is noticeably present and sweet. Comparatively, the Perique is in the background. Must be smoked slowly, with a full burn, to receive a great deal of complexity in the flavor. The blend of sweet and bitter is well balanced, rich and strong...more toasty and creamy in last third of the bowl. Best fully rubbed out, and not left in chunks.

Recommended, and would order again.

A companion infusion: a bottle or two of Oxford Class Organic Amber Ale.

I have to give Night Train my seal of approval. This is some hardcore stuff here. It has a wonderful aroma and can be almost overwhelming. I am usually a fast and hot smoker but this slowed me right down. The nicotine content does seems to be quite high and the aftertast can be rough but well worth it.

This is a great smoke. I love the flavor. Pure enjoyment to smoke this blend. I highly recommend it! I used to chew strong tobacco like copenhagen and Grizzly. This is good for me as it actually has a decent amount of nicotine in it.

This is one of the best VaPers I've had to date. The virginias provide a velvety base to the tempering burley and accenting Perique. I would have this as an all day smoke, but I don't want to get my tastebuds into a rut. I have a couple of pounds in the cellar as a hedge against an unfortunate future. A truly wonderful blend from an exemplary blender.

No doubt this is very good tobacco. The blocks are easy to break up and are not overly moist. There is some bite in the first third of the bowl but after you get about half way through the bite seems to go away and what you are left with is a very enjoyable smoke. There is a very high level of nicotine, so towards the end of the smoke you definately feel it. All in all, I do like the blend and think it is one of the better product from C&D.

19 reviews and still a four-star rated VAPER from Cornell & Diehl. I do not wonder why, because this is one of C&D's very, very best offerings. If C&D scaled back and removed some of the rundancy from their menu, Night Train must stay on track, so to speak.

Surprisingly sweet and well-behaved for a blend this deep, earthy and that delivers a real Perique-whomp. I think that somehow the extreme pressing helps the Perique exchange some of its venom and absorb some manners from the rest of the leaf. Still, this is no blend for those who eat mild salsa, take the salt off their pretzels or drink lite beer. If you are not allowed to play with knives, NT has an edge.

I enjoyed Kajun Kake and the various cubed Burley blends with Perique of the last few years from C&D, but Night Train has taken the spotlight. Just be careful that your friends don't mistake NT for a "Berkeley Brownie" and gnaw off a bite. It will make them high, but also clean-out their upper GI tract.

This one is a "keeper". Whats not to love. The brick arrives intact. You only have to pinch off a portion, rub it out(very easily done)load, and smoke. The ease of preperation is secondary to the quality of the tobacco. The sweetness of the Va's and cavendish's are balanced with the cool burning burleys. The taste is sweet, and mellow. The minor role of the perique adds a little tingle. Night Train burns well,never too hot.No bite. What more can one hope for from a VAPER blend? Great taste, good burn, nice ash. I just orderd two more pounds of this to cellar. Can it get any better?

A 1" x 4.25"x 8" inch pressed brick of C&D's Night Train arrived a few days ago. I cut open the plastic wrapper and was greeted with a true yet subtle Virginia aroma. The block is light brown in color with tiny specs of dark and light mixed in. There's plenty of thin blonde Virginia flakes and ribbon in this brick having the texture of dry oatmeal once rubbed out. I pried off a corner plug and rubbed it up, this didn't take much effort. I've smoked four bowls of this tobacco in different shaped pipes with varying bowl sizes since its arrival. It is my experience that the ideal pipe be a Canadian with a larger bowl capacity, read on to find out why. Once loaded in the bowl and settled in my assigned seat the train pulls out of the station with no problems at all. The charring light went fast, in fact I had to let up to get it to die down enough to tamp. This tobacco, like most bright flakes burned very hot the first quarter of the bowl with not much initial excitement. Patience on this journey is paramount; this train will bite you hard if you race down the tracks puffing away. Easing off the throttle about a third of the way into the trip, the city scenes gave way to beautiful Virginia country vistas. First, the mild sweetness of the Virginia bright flakes are in the front, and the slightly heavier ribbon added to this. The subtle Cavendish Cut Burley gave the Virginias it bottom note that they couldn't have achieved on their own, and the combination was seamless. What really makes this blend so special is the role that the small amount of Perique played acting as the caboose on the palette. Halfway into the journey I discovered what Virginia smokers live for, it's sheer bliss, and with a larger bowl and a longer stem on your pipe the trip is non-stop; a fulfilling array of flavorful Virginias. Night Train is a dry mixture to be sure, but your destination can be reached if a large enough bowl is used. Once Night train reaches a metered cruising speed it's a smooth trip indeed. She smokes all the way to the bottom with a bluish white ash, no dottle to speak of. Considering Virginias age so wonderfully, I'm rubbing up 3/4's of this pound for a glorious return trip at a later date, and will be commuting daily with the rest. The quality of the tobacco C&D employs is evident here. This is a first class blend for the Virginia aficionado that enjoys bright to middle Virginias.

I have to say highly recommend. A classic Virginia/Perique with a soft sweetness I really like. Packs easy, lights easy. One of the first tobaccoes I have smoke where I didn't have to figure it out. Just crumbled, packed, lit and enjoyed down to the bowl. Somehow the consistancy of Night Train matches my packing style. (that and shortly afterwards I was furiously relighting Barbary Coast).

C&D were kind enough to give me a sample of Night Train in my shipment a while back and I've finally finished it off (having saved it only for special occassions). I used it sparingly for another reason as well: the nicotine in this one packs a punch. I tend to inhale so for me it packs a serious punch. Hence never too often.

After trying Bayou Night and loving it so much, I just had to try Night Train. This is another great tobacco creation from C&D. The natural sweetness of the Virginias really comes true, and the burley gives the blend a nice nutty flavor. The perique is toned down in this blend compared to Bayou Night, but sill adds alot of flavor and charactor to the tobacco. IMOP, it almost tastes like an aromatic and has a very plesant room note. This blend makes a great all day smoke. Highly recommended!

A wonderful Va/Per blend - too bad it is cheapened by the name. this is much more than a cheap high like it's name sake. The mellow, nutty undertones work as a foundation and the Per flies and soars above the ground like a bird in flight. smoke enough of it and you will see the bird!!! hahahaha - careful a punch is hidden in the bottom of the bowl. * Hey Talon - Milky Way IS a better name for this. Very good description. It also combines with CD's other Star references, Orion and Constellation.

An excellent all day smoke for the reformed cigarette smoker. Little palate fatigue for a blend this well. Not one dimentional, but also not overly complex. A cool smoke with just a hint of bite. It burns well, rub it out for a quick smoke, or break off a chunk and shove it in your pipe for a long smoke.

A spicy and tangy citrus on first light. Some occasional lemon-grass with a tart/floral retro. Flavors and strength build and build. Definitely not mild. Perfect last smoke of the day. ☆☆1/2

Tin note of stewed sour fruit, slightly tart, and Rasin. Tobacco is a brown Krumble Kake with a tiny amount of tan and dark brow. It breaks apart and rubs out fairly easy. It's not moist enough to need drying. Burn is moderate with few relights. The strength is medium and nic is medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and mostly consistent, with notes of mild lemon, sweet grass, dry earth, mild ripe fruit, toasted bread, bitter nuts, very peppery spices, tangy raisin, mildly floral and a very peppery retro. Perique is leading with support from burley. Virginias are kind of doing their own thing while along for the ride. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great.

The description prepares you for an experience that never comes. Its aroma can get quite offensive out of the tin, but the smoke is more pleasantly flavoured. Still nothing remarkable. This train has run out of steam :(

I gotta echo Tripjoker. WOW. This IS what i'm talkin about. Love this. Nice strength. Nice taste. I loaded my best cob and it was perfect. Can't say enough about C&D. They are the best blenders in the world. Anyone who loves strong tobacco is gonna love this.
