01/02/2006: Puts me in mind of House of Windsors' Country Doctor blend with a little less Perique. Well balanced and with a nearly perfect moisture content and requires little attention to smoke all the way to the bottom of the bowl. Originally created by Leonards' Pipe Shop in Portland, Oregon. If you are ever in Portland, Oregon stop by Cascade Cigar on 82nd Ave. it is a combo Cigar/Pipe store with a sports bar ajoining it. The last time I was there you could still smoke in the bar. You can also order on the internet. Do a search for Cascade Cigar you should find it easily.

11/27/2006: A good all-day smoke. Not a four-star though.

for haredawg: you finally mention the name of the place; however, who is the "she" within your writing? Who do I talk to when I go there? I was born and raised in Portland, Or and I do know where you are talking. Even though I am a native; those that are not familiar with Portland, would have no clue as to the who and where Cascade Tobacco really is. (BTW: it is in the building that used to be 82nd AVE Bowl.)

This is what you'd expect from a store made balkan blend with burley added. A bit nutty, a bit damp out of the baggy, a nice mottled course collection of light and dark. Dry it out a bit and it smokes cool and even, and you know you've smoked a balkan blend. There's nothing to complain about and nothing to laud, and any one of us could make comparisons to this or that tobacco.

The genius and beauty and special thing about this blend is the owner and blender and the store itself. She is humble about her mixing skills, and, you know, perhaps she should be. She is humble about other skills as well. Truth is she is a force of nature for smokers rights, specifically in Oregon. It has cost her too, in undue scrutiny, her liqour license, her license to have video poker. But she's won a battle or two too. She is almost single handedly the reason you are allowed to smoke in a smoke shop (the original bill did not allow it).

The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and the walk-in humidor is the largest in the NorthWest.

Thirty feet north west of the store is the best taco cart in the world.

I know, someone will complain that this is not a review. I don't care, Nan is an unsung hero of basic rights and I miss the hell out of Oregon. Delete the not-really-a-review if you want. But if you're in PDX, go to Cascade and say Hi.
