Sutliff Tobacco Company China Black Whiskey

(2.60)
China Black Whiskey - Bourbon Whiskey is distinctive. Only spirits produced in Bourbon County, Kentucky can be called bourbon; otherwise, they are labeled sour mash whiskey. The distinctiveness of bourbon, in turn, makes China Black Whiskey a distinctive pipe blend. A blend of golden cavendish, black cavendish and Oriental. Sweetly aromatic and delightfully mild without a bite.

The grassy, citrusy gold cavendish is the base of the blend. The unsweetened black cavendish provides some brown sugar as a supporting player. Far in the background is a dry, lightly buttery sweet, woody Oriental. The whiskey topping is sweet and sublimates the tobaccos to a fair extent, though it lacks a little richness. Barely has any nicotine. Won’t bite, but may get slightly warm on the tongue if puffed fast. Burns clean at a moderate pace with a fairly consistent flavor. Leaves some moisture in the bowl, and needs a few relights as it burns a little wet. Has a sweet, short lived after taste. An all day smoke. Two and a half stars.

For those who enjoy an occasional aromatic experience. Much better than most. Lately I have been smoking less and so my experience with this blend may be intensified somewhat. Has good smoking properties for an aromatic and smells good too. Recommended.

I have purchased this in the past from Iwan Ries, which touts the blend as its own. I have noticed that Altadis also distributes other IRC blends, including Three Star Blue.

Anyway, China Black Whiskey tasted like a step up in grade of leaf from Captain Black White to me. It burned a bit more dry than the Captain, but had that same heavily cased taste.

If you like sweet blends that will not bite your tongue off, give this brew a whirl in your pipe.

I have actually enjoyed smoking this tobacco.

It was pleasant, tasty but mild, and the pouch aroma was more vanilla than Bourbon.

And it did not bite at all.

I purchased a two pack of this tobacco a couple of years ago for my local tobacco shop. It has a nice pouch aroma that is heavy on the cavendish; you can smell the orientals in the background. The tobacco is quite moist but burns fairly well. It has a very nice room note and the flavor is mild but has a flavor like a Glenfidich single malt, it is very sweet though. Whenever I smoke this it's like I'm actually sucking in the smoke of very refined cavendish and orientals laced with powdered sugar. Overall it's a very nice blend that will work well for English blend fans who really don't like fruity tobaccos but like aeromatics every now and then. Highly recommended for new and experienced smokers.

This was a very nice bakkie, it was very sweet but pleasant to smoke, and leaving the pipe rather dry, for a change.

The whiskey aroma was not as of Borkum Riff, for example, but more sweet; I didn't have the impression that I was smoking or smelling, whiskey.

Far from a grand tobacco, but certainly better than Captain Black.

Actually, next time I go to the U.S.A., I will buy nme a couple pouch, for the sake of good ol' times!

Very mellow smoke, really just a hint of Bourbon Whiskey flavor; I detected more cavendish flavor than anything else. Regardless, this is a very nice blend if you are looking for a mild, slightly flavored, bite free smoke.

Not bad, just too mild for me. Certainly worth a try, if you enjoy this sort of thing.

February 2006. I removed enough tobacco for two bowl's,then let it sit for 10 minate's before packing my pipe.Lighting was very easy and a few tamp's were required ocassionally.

China Black Whiskey has been the best whiskey blend I have smoked to date.

It did not bite and there was no harshness on the back of my throat and definitely,no bitterness detected as with most whiskey blend's.

It left a very decent grey white ash,at bowl's end.

Definitely better than most whiskey blend's.

If you really pay attention, you can catch a bit of the Bourbon flavoring, but most of the time it is buried somewhere under the cavendish.

Overall, too sweet for me. The Oriental is well hidden under teh sweetness.

It had a decent room note, and it was a smooth cool smoke.
