I passed through a town that had a small smoke shop and decided to pop in. This was one of three bulk blends they had so I thought what the hell and purchased an ounce, besides smelling nice while burning it was harsh and burned hot. Maybe its better in cigar form but in a pipe it tasted of a bottom shelf Captain Black White. Not worth my time...

This blend is available in pouches, where I live, and has two types: Backwoods' Mild and Natural Pipe Tobacco; and Backwoods' Mild and Natural Pipe Tobacco, Black and Gold. This review covers the Black and Gold variety.

As one might expect, the tobacco is a mixture of dark and light brown pieces, and the cut is similar to Prince Albert, and to the old Amphora blends. Not really a rough cut.

The initial flavour is vanilla and some kind of fruit, like Captain Black but a little less vanilla. The surprising thing is that after about half way through the bowl, the vanilla taste recedes to only a whisper, and one is left with a pretty standard burley taste for the rest of the pipe. No virginia, though, at least none noticeable. As always, however, this may depend on the pipe in use at the time.

It is a bit damp, and the pipe gurgles after about two thirds have been smoked. You can hear the little leaves popping and hissing as they burn.

No bite with this one, and I would regard it as a good aromatic for low-maintenance smoking. Better, IMHO than Captian Black White, and a fuller taste than Captain Black Blue and Gold.

I have trouble telling a difference between this and Captain Black White. It is exactlly the same in every way ecept the cut, this is a wider cut with some clumps of partially rubbed flakes. Mostly black cav. and dark brown burley pieces. It does however smoke drier and has no bite at all, but is hot and wet still. Burns better tham CB but has the same dottle and dark ash. The taste seems too artificial for me to smoke on a regular basis but I will smoke the rest of the 7oz. bag I got from Mars Cigar. Incidently the bag only says Backwoods Pipe tobacco and doesn't mention "4x4 Rugged Cut" anywhere on the bag. 6 out of 10

12/07/2005: One of the best vanilla flavored tobacco blends I have smoked. Fairly low in the nicotine department but has good tobacco flavors under the scent of the vanilla. A bit hard to find on the internet or anywhere else for that matter. Adding a pinch of a stronger tobacco makes this really good smoke. This bulk tobac arrived with just the right moisture content for immediate use. This blend burns smoothly and exhibits none of the stickiness of many Aromatics. If you are seeking a well-behaved Aromatic type for a change of pace smoke give this a try you might enjoy it as much as I did. I think Cup 'O Joes is the only place I have found this blend at least under this name.

11/25/2006 Update: Still a good Aromatic. Drop one star, no longer in my rotation.

I got this from a local shop under the name "Macho Blend". I have no clue as to why it was called that....

Plain and simple - if you like the Backwoods Cigars, you will like this. It smokes as cool as any blend I have ever put in a pipe. If you puff it too fast, your pipe will get hot, the smoke will take on an acrid taste, but you will not get bitten.

This would be a safe one for a newbie to learn on.
