This tobacco is great stuff. I acquired a tin that is supposedly 35 years old. It arrived in good condition, and the tin smelled of raisins. The humidity level was perfect. I loaded a bowl and was amazed at what a great tobacco this is. This can be thought of as a more polished version of Dunhill's Royal Yacht. The topping on this tobacco was nearly unnoticable. Peddler's Pipe had a flavor that was constantly evolving and always complex. It was a real treat to see where it would go next. Bowl after bowl has been tongue bite free. This is a tin that reminds me of why aged tobacco is so sought after.

First, thanks to fellow reviewer Jakob of Denmark for gifting me a tin of The Peddler's Pipe. He knew I enjoyed Royal Yacht and thought I might like this stuff - and I did indeed!

The front of the tin says, "Specially manufactured in London, England by C.E. McConnell Limited for The Peddler's Pipe." That descriptive leads me to believe this is a proprietary house blend made exclusively for a pipe shop called The Peddler's Pipe somewhere in the UK.

Enough guessing. Here are the facts as determined by my palate. The Peddler's Pipe could easily be re-named Royal Yacht Light. The leaf had the same shag cut as the old Dunhill's RY produced in the 1970's. It also had a very similar smell in the tin. The casing was likewise similar, yet a bit more mildly applied. Someone eased back on the peddle when applying the nicotine content, too.

If you happen to enjoy dark, stoved and slightly sweetened Virginia with a dash of casing, then this would be a good one to try if you can find a tin on eBay.

Scrumptious stuff. Thanks again, Jakob!

This is a historical note about the blend "The Peddler's Pipe" by McConnell. I have never reviewed this blend, but would like to. The Peddler's Pipe was a bricks-and-mortar pipe shop located at the Peddler's Village shopping center in Lahaska, PA; in upper Bucks County, north of Philadelphia. A very high-end group of shops and restaurants for the Philly suburbs.

The Peddler's Pipe was owned by Robert Clewell, Sr. I first met Robert in 1967 while I was at college. I bought my first smoking pipes from him, and have them to this day. Robert also had various loose blends and tinned tobaccos as well, a very comprehensive shop. He also had a line of private-labelled pipes with the shop's name stamped upon them. It may be that Robert's pipes came from the Wilke sisters shops. Robert passed away in the early 70s and his son, Bob Clewell, operated the store for a few years thereafter. I think the shop closed in 1975 or 1976.

An old pre-Robert McConnell blend. My tin was from '74 and perfectly sealed. This is pure dark, heavy stoved virginia. It smells, tastes and looks oddly similar to Royal Yacht, but a tad milder.

Although out of production and hard to get, fans of Royal Yacht should look for this quality product. I have only one tin left and I will save it for special occasions or maybe use it as a present for someone who appreciate RY'ish blends more than I do.

A potent baccy!
