Uhle's Blend 44

(3.54)
The natural sweetness of Virginia mingles great with the even-burning, woodsy burley. Ingredients: Virginias and burley.
Notes: The description from older Uhle's brochures (c. pre-2005) reads, "A light Virginia flake blend with that natural sweet, woody taste. An easy blend to smoke. Note that the flakes are as per the older American meaning: small, easy to load pieces, like the Schermerhorn Flake."

Blend 44 is what a VaBur is supposed to be, and it is like a very high-end codger blend. The taste is marvelous with both Burley and Virginias coming though nicely. Similar to Mac Baren Golden Extra, if GE had a bit more Virginia. Uhle is simply a magician with Burley and know how to use Virginia, too. The marriage of the twain in 44 is just legendary, and there is plenty of rich tobacco flavor with a decent nic hit.

The moisture level is perfect and the pack, light and burn are just as good. Smokes to a white ash in the heel without Burley bitterness toward the end, and you will be sad, sad, sad to see that white ash. I have not found a better VaBur, and this is just as good as Stonehaven. Blend 44 is a must-try for VaBur lovers. We are powerful. And we are growing. Seriously, get yaself some.

This is really good tobacco. A refined Half & Half, if you will. I don't think it is new world in flavor, more like the old fashioned combos of the mid 20th century. You'll taste both Virginia and Burley, but in the way that I think the two were intended to be, easy on the steaming and heavy on the aging. Just really good stuff.

A Virginia/burley blend with a very light sweet topping. Not overly complex but you'll get notes of nuts, toast, slight molasses, a little grass, along with lots of wood and smoke. There's a light sharpness from the white burley, too. The Virginia takes a light lead over the burleys. The tobacco is fairly dry and cut several ways, all small, which makes for easy packing and burning all the way through. No harshness, no bite, and the consistent flavors don't flash off near the finish. Has a slightly more than mild nic-hit. Burns cool and clean at a moderate pace, and has a nice after taste. Requires an average number of relights, and leaves little moisture in the bowl. As easy an all day smoking VaBur as there is. It'll remind you of the best OTCs in this profile you'll find without the wetness of PG. Three and a half stars.

Nice looking, old-timey granulated burley and bright VA. The faintest of top notes provides for a natural smoke that is very lightly sweet. The description mentions "woodsy", and never was that more true than with this tobacco. It had an old OTC-like appearance and flavor with burley to strengthen the smoke and provide body. Simply a nice woodsy taste, just as Uhle says.

This lacks that citrusy note that I often find wearing in many lemon VA blends, as the burley kind of shouts it down. It's a very burley-forward blend, with the usual nuttiness one associates with such a mixture. The only problem with this one is it fails to excite me. It's a Steady Eddie and of obvious high quality but it isn't something I'd smoke often. There's nothing in the way of complexity or joie de vivre. This is a simple smoke, perfect for when you are busy with other tasks. Even so, this is a worthy blend for folks looking for a toned-down tobacco that doesn't call much attention to itself. I can't wait to blend with this stuff!

Interesting cut: plug burley and rough cut Virginia. The red and bright VA's are shredded so they pack easily with the cubed Burley. Tin aroma is woody and nutty with a faint topping. The flavor is just what I am looking for when in a Burley kinda mood. This is one of the best Burley blends out there, from the masters of Burley. The Virginia's in this smooth out the smoking experience, the woody nutty Burley's are supported, or balanced may be a better word by the sweet, toasty Virginia's. There is a slight citrus in the background from the bright VA's but the VA's provide mostly a sweetness and toasted hay flavor that only makes the more forward Burley's taste better. The topping is very light and only enhaces the flavors of the tobacco's and may add or support that light chocolate flavor coming from the Burley's. My go to Burley along with Blend 300.

A very nice VaBur. As good as any out there. The Virginias lead with a sweet woody hay. The Burley takes a close second providing earthy nuts. One of the best features is the very light topping that is hard to identify. If I had to guess I'd say apricot and honey. Too light to be positive, but that's one of the things that intrigues me about this blend. I find it delicious. A smooth smoke with a steady burn.

Mild to medium in body. Medium in taste. Flavoring is extremely mild. Burn is near perfect.

****8/04/2014**** I just received a half pound of #44 since I just finished my sample that I was conserving, using my smallest pipes to get the flavor and making the amount I had last. I liked it so much I ordered more. My sample had very very small particles almost like it was the bottom of the jar. This time my half pound has ribbons like Dunhill or C&D and has full cubes this time that aren't crushed as much. Pouch aroma is delicious with hints of oats and autumn leaves. #44 is what Half & Half would be if they used the very best cubed and ribbon burley and red ribbon Virginia. I purchased this as a replacement for my Wilke Nut Brown Burley which is no more and #44 uses the same top shelf burley but more Virginia. Those who enjoy OTC burley / Virginia blends will certainly be ecstatic to stick their pipe into the pouch and codger fill, IE: thumb pack this old timey wonderful blend..

Ah blend #44. This was given to me free in an order of Black Stoker and #300. Delicous cubed and ribbon burleys and red Virginia. Wosbald sums it up beautifully so I won't add much but say if there was ever a fishing or work bench companion this is it. Mild, flavorful and a great room note. Uhles and Pipeworks & Wilke obtain THE best burleys IMO...

The pouch aroma of this mixture of cube, flakey bits, and short-cut, medium ribbon is both richly sweet and grassy with the clean, herbal scent common to white burleys.

This is a classic american blend of burley and red VA. Comprising the fundament are the cube and ribbon burleys which are clean and about as elegant as burley gets. A substantial helping of red VA flake, broken into tiny shards as well as ribbons, provides ample sweetness and variance. There is a smattering of dark cavendish to add a variance and round the edges, though it is not distinctly noticeable in the smoke.

Blend 44 is stimulating and companionable, yet above all, honest and wholesome. There is nothing fancy here, just top notch ingredients which are unpretentiously prepared according to a venerable, homespun blending tradition. This went well in a chamber of any gauge.

This is another winner from Uhle's and yet another uhle's blend on the future TAD list for the big bag for my next order. I have had a wonderful time trying out all the fantastic VaBurs by Uhles and I think they may just be the Burley masters that they are often accused of being. To give any of these less than four stars just does not seem right.

44 Is another four star blend for me. The key difference between this and PPB, 00, 300, et. al. is that the Virginia is the more forward component In the mix of Virginia and burley. The sweet citrus and hay comes to the fore front in this blend with the burley providing more of a backup role. There is still some nuttiness from the burley though. This is what C&D's Briar Fox wishes it was.

I really wish I had bought more than the little bag of this when I placed my order.

Uhle's #44 is just a good old fashioned granulated Virginia, with a hint of top dressing that gently improves the room note. The taste is mild, toasty, woodsy and just a little sweet.

I can see where this would just be too mild for the Virginia Flake fan, but would make an excellent change up for the Burley lover, or aromatic smoker. The quality is top notch. It's easy to load, easy to smoke, and just about biteless. (But don't pull on it like you would a burley blend. Gentle sips work best.)

This is a friendly easy to take mixture, that is just the thing for quiet leisure, such as reading the paper or a good book.

Definitely worth a shot.
