This is very similar to Lane's 1-Q, with some differences. The vanilla is a little deeper in flavor here, and there's a slighter, more obvious honey bread note from the gold cavendish. The tobaccos are sublimated, but I did notice a little grass and citrus from the Virginia with a mild nuttiness and molasses from the burley. The black cavendish provides some brown sugar in the background. In regard to the "secret" flavoring, four different vanillas were used in the topping, one being cocoa, and I also sense a hint of marshmallow. The flavor is consistent all the way through. Has a mild nic-hit. Won’t bite or get harsh. Burns at reasonable pace, very smooth, clean and cool, but leaves a little moisture in the bowl. Needs few relights. Has a pleasant after taste and room note. An easy going all day smoke.

This was the third tobacco I tried. At first I have to admit I wasn't much of a fan it didn't seem to have much of a taste. However, after letting it sit in a jar on my shelf for two months it was amazing...I couldn't stop smoking it, day in and day out, until I emptied the jar. The two months on the shelf really brought the vanilla flavor out.

I was sent a sample of 1M about 6 months ago in an order I had placed online. The tobacco was coarse cut in various sizes with light and dark browns intermixed with black. It was slightly moist to the touch and needed drying out a little for my personal preferences. The aroma from the pouch was mostly anise with a very faint vanilla undertone. An unlit sip of the pipe also revealed similar flavors.

Even before I allowed this to dry some, it was easy to light. Initially, it was smooth and the anise flavoring dominated and lasted throughout the whole bowl down to a light gray ash that left a pleasant and toasty room note. The finish was rather long and there was a hint of a buttery taste I could not quite nail down.

I enjoyed the sweetness of the blend and the smoothness. I also enjoyed that the anise flavoring was very light. I probably will not be buying more of this since it was like a dozen other Cavendish blends I have had. Nothing outstanding, but the anise topping was nice. If you are looking for a mild aromatic, you should give this a go.

Now made by Altadis. Easily the most enjoyable aromatic I've been able to find. This blend beats the pants off every other aromatic out there as far as I'm concerned, I always carry this with me. I used to work at a tobacco shop and I must have tried every one of the tobaccos we carried at least once... this was the "winner." Complex, nuanced and not overly flavored like most other aromatics such as those from Peterson and Mac Baren. The flavor seems to change and develop throughout the bowl with absolutely no tongue bite that I can detect. Just beneath the casing are the tobacco flavors... still easily detectable, and married perfectly. The room note is delicious, upon experiencing the lingering scent I can only imagine that even non-smokers wish they could smoke this...it smells like a tobacco store, (the whole store!!!) a scent I have loved since childhood. 10 out of 4 stars from me. Also sold as "Blue Note" from Tobacco Galleria and as "Evening Stroll" from Benjamin Hartwell.

Is my pipe lit? This the question that pops into my head while smoking 1-M. Maybe thirty plus years of pipe smoking have seared my taste buds a bit but I don't taste much of anything with this blend. I detect a little vanilla flavor but not alot else. 1-M is not offensive by any means. The wife tells me the room note is quite good. If you're looking for a super mild smoke this might be right up your alley but I think I'll stick with something with a bit more flavor.

I discovered 1M as a freebie included in a large order and have found it a very pleasant and unobtrusive smoke. It allows me to go about my business without having to pay too much attention to tending it or focusing on its smoking qualities all the time. And yet, I'm gratified with it and satisfied with its smooth smoking quality. A surprisingly good tobacco taste that seems to resemble a slight casing of licorice over a light batter of waffles(?). Well, I'm no good with the similes, but it does have a pleasant taste that I like better than Lane 1Q.

Bottomline: an easy to fill, easy to smoke, amiable and relaxing all day smoke should you choose to make it so. No bite, but will give me a bit of a blanket tongue if I smoke it too fast. Recommended.

Sutliff Tobacco Company - 1-M Vanilla.

Although the blend is badged as a Ribbon there's a fair few larger, leafy, pieces in the pouch. There's a far higher amount of Burley and Virginia compared to black Cavendish. The nose from the pouch is moderately aromatic, but not strong.

The vanilla adds a light and creamy flavour to the smoke without being sticky, and there's also a slight sharpness. This piquancy gives just enough life to prevent it from seeming mundane. To me, the vanilla appurtenance actually calms down some more as a bowl progresses, allowing a bit more space for the other tastes. 'Thick': that sums up the build of the smoke nicely! The temperature's extremely cool, and there's not a bite to be had; for me that is.

The room-note's pleasant and the nicotine's mild.

I enjoy this, but in a market as crowded as it is with vanilla blends a new one to my palate needs to have the X-Factor to get full marks. This is very good, but it's not remarkable:

This is a nice smooth aro. Not harsh in any way. It is not over-the-top in flavoring and provides a nice sweet undertone with the vanilla note. You are not going to really notice varying tobacco flavors at play. It does seem to sweeten even more after the first 1/3 and becomes even more enjoyable. Seems there may be a honey note that adds a little sweetness. It's a nice smoke. It's comparable to other base vanilla aros - I like it better than some and not as much as others. If you're looking for a nice smooth relaxing smoke, it fits the bill. If you are searching for the next thing to knock your socks off, this probably won't be it. Overall, it's definitely a solid performer for its genre.

Very mild tobacco and mild flavor. Pleasant room note and it does seem to burn hot. I enjoy smoking a pipe of this tobacco when im looking for a mild tobacco or during the morning hours. In my opinion its similar to Lane 1Q and if you enjoy mild aromatics this is one tobacco worth trying.

As many others have compared this to Lane 1Q, I will do the same, and right up front say that I would prefer 1Q to this. Not that this is a bad blend. I am primarily an English smoker, but I do like Aromatics every now and then. And it scores brownie points with the Mrs. as well! This, like 1Q has an extremely pleasant room note. This is what most non-pipe smokers probably think is a traditional pipe tobacco smell. That is what I like about the blend. Here is what I do not. I don't care for the long ribbon cut. Its just a mess to load, especially into a smaller bowl. I like the cut of 1Q more, just seems more manageable. It seems to smoke a bit too wet for me, and I dont have the patience to mess around with trying to dry it out. Like I said, aromatics are just something I poke around with a bit. So, to summarize, as compared to the old standbys in the aro market, I would say this is better than BCA, but not as good as 1Q. I may try some blends moving forward to play around a bit with it and will update if I stumble upon anything earth shattering.

A long time ago I had the misfortune of smoking a Sutliff creation that had left me avoiding their stuff at all costs. Recently however, I decided to purchase a P&C deal that "battled" Lane's 1Q with Sutliff's vanilla counterpart. To be fair, I only wanted the 1Q half that I very much enjoy, but I suppose everyone gets a second chance.

The spirit of the deal was to compare the two blends, so let's open the bag and begin. The initial aroma is quite similar with both having a nice graham cracker or vanilla scent, 1Q is a bit stickier and sweet and 1-M has a slight cardboard smell that was present the last time I smoked their stuff. I did however prefer 1-M's ribbon cut, as it had more body and packed nicer (1Q is so thinly shredded it burns like powder).

Once lit, things drifted apart. 1-M wasn't as sweet and didn't maintain it's vanilla, rather it transformed into a nondescript sweetness underneath a kind of no frills "basic" tobacco taste. Both have a artificial topping taste, with 1-M's being more chemical in nature.

This was a far better experience from the last time I had a Sutliff product, but it still tasted cheap and left me worrying about what chemicals produced the flavor that stayed on my saliva and gave me a little cough.

I'd say that JimInks pretty much nailed the description of this fine smoke. I'd only add that I'm getting more of a "roasted" honey quality out of it and absolutely zero bite from a relatively fresh batch just received from P&C. A great smoke that required little drying time.

Fabulous tin note and room note; a true "crowd pleaser". Seems to stay lit easily, and produces lots of sweet tasting smoke and doesn't bite. Seems to remind me of good pastry or Grandma's pancakes, with a touch of raisin and vanilla. A very enjoyable aromatic, perfect for beginning pipe smokers, aromatic lovers, or a change of pace.

The first bowl of this Altadis blend was probably the only one I would somewhat recommend. The more I smoked, the more I disliked. Even for a sweet toothed pipe connoisseur (which I can be at times) I think this lacks real tobacco taste, complexity, and balance. There is maybe half a notch separation between 1-M and drugstore blends. The taste can be described as a coffee-toffee-mint-coco flavored blend. The experience from one bowl to the next was a half bowl worthy smoke. It got bitter, bit like a copperhead, and finished too wet leaving 1/3 to 1/2 a bowl of unsmoked tobacco behind. This was a little surprising, as this blend did not feel wet or sticky to the touch as I was packing it.

Another nice smelling, nice tasting and no tongue biting aromatic. On par with many other ala vanilla tobaccos. (with maybe coconut?)

Good beginner smoke. One inwhich didn't offer me anything unique.

I have no idea what the "secret flavoring recipe" might be.

Tobacconists with bulk tobacco are few and far between in the Mid Hudson Valley, even the venerable Rhinebeck Smoke Shop is now owned by "Smokes 4 Less." I tried this because it was one of 2 that weren't flavored with things like peach, mango, strawberry.... I'm happy with my selection -if this is the same 1M. I don't taste much "secret flavoring", other than a chocolate like after note. I do enjoy this one in a pinch. It is smooth and fairly tasty. I'll probably purchase 4 ounces next time. It's a good "go to."

this is supposed to be an answer to lane 1q. not close. does have the wonderful room not but that's it. the vanilla is a bit artificial tasting and the smoke itself is much like a cigarette. I get a bitter and ashy aftertaste. it does burn quite well and its inexpensive. for me just too harsh. this may be the worst review I've given. it does mellow a bit halfway into it. just not my thing.

Smoking now:

Pouch note is a sweet vanilla, honey, raisin, and slight fruity smell maybe from the Virginias. Comes in a variety of different sized pieces of tobacco fairly moist but smokable. Took a light and kept lite just fine.

At first the bowl tastes mostly of sugary topping but as the bowl smokes it becomes a delightful mellow aromatic. Vanilla, molasses , marshmallow sweetness dominates the blend, the nutty and often bread like burley and some tart Virginias are there if you taste hard enough. Very mellow easy going aromatic smoke. Room note is very nice. No aftertaste, didn’t bite me but I could it doing so if pushed hard it is rather moist.

I often smoke this in a 9mm filter pipe and it works very well, rather consistent sweet vanilla bready flavor. Left typical goopy dottle in my pipe. No complaints from coworkers on the room note.

The more I smoke this the more I actually like this better than 1Q.
