Well I really like a good English blend BUT this is Not one of them! The room note I am told is really unpleasant . I usually only rate a blend that I like .this an exception. The young lady on the tin has not been around while it was smoked . If she was she had a very weak sense of smell or a really bad cold!

Bob Gregory of the Samuel Gawith Company located in Kendall England blends Midnight Lace. The blend is offered in 50-gram tins and is distributed by the Hermit Tobacco Co. who also originally formulated the blend.
The tin aroma is full and smells of Latakia. The aroma is made individual by liberal amounts of added flavored Cavendish tobacco. A slight mint chocolate dimension can be noticed. Midnight Lace is composed of Latakia, Turkish, and sweetened Cavendish tobaccos. The color of this blend is mostly dark with additions of red/brown and pale green.
Although advertised as a flake, Midnight Lace is more of a rough ribbon cut with small pieces of broken flake included. Midnight Lace packs decently enough. The moisture level is slightly above average and no large amount of dehydration adds to any of the blend?s attributes.
Midnight Lace has a fairly quick initial light but the resulting burn tends to concentrate towards the center of the bowl. The ash of Midnight Lace is dark and is ridden with dottle. After smoking Midnight Lace, the pipe bowl walls are not left clean but instead become rather sticky. Midnight Lace also has the ability to make a pipe quite odious for some time after its smoke. The room note of this blend is quite strong. The aroma is not overly pleasant and imitates the smell of burning steaks on the grill.
The flavor of Midnight Lace is thick and tastes of sweetened smoke. The flavor does not vary as the smoke progresses and in time becomes overbearing. A harsh aftertaste of badly grilled meats is left behind after the smoking of this blend. The Cavendish of Midnight Lace is cased a good deal and seems to only add the acridity of the blends flavor and aroma. The blend smokes moderately cool but does have a substantial nicotine kick, which can make finishing a larger bowl of the blend a daunting task. Midnight Lace produces ample smoke.

A good all old style English. A pressed cavendish for strenght with loads of latakia. I think all the bad reviews are people are ordering this because of the girl on the tin not knowing what type of blend truly an old Navy style English blends. This is a Full Hearthy yet smooth English Blend. No bite in the bowl. Packs very full and stay lit. I really enjoy this stuff. But clear the room I warn you this is not an indoor blend by any means! A little expnsve but worth keeping a tin around for a once in a while good Smoke.

Talk about Oriental mixtures - Whew! Feather light with no oomp. Smelled great in the tin though.

Well, its been said before and its right on the money!! If you like your tobacco to taste like yard bird, burning on the grill, you'll love this blend! I wish the tobacco was as good as the tin art. I was suprised by this one. It smells of strong latakia, and in the tin actually smells somewhat good. There are some orientals and cavendish mixed in as well. The whole "grilled meat" thing has me totally lost. I have smoked other blends with high ammounts of orientals and not ever run into this before. I just dont know whats going on there. I probably wont ever buy any more of this. 1.5 out of 5 stars.

Delightful tin art, but still my LEAST favorite of all the Hermit blends.The turkish leaf is just too much.The taste is exceedingly strong,even for a regular 965 smoker like myself.It tastes and sorta smells like rancid hamburgs & hot dogs on the grill in July.Hermit makes several great blends including Capt n' Earle's "Nightwatch" "10 Russians" "Mystic Blend" and one of my favorites "English Atmosphere".I can't recommend THIS one however. Pass this on by! prep 11-26-04
