"Peter Stokkebye sure can make some good tobacco" said Mr. Motoyoshi.
I am slowly realizing that I have never had a bad experience with PS blends. I have yet to try one of their Aromatics, so we shall see ;)
Cube cuts are somewhat rare these days and The Stokkebyes have done a fantastic job with this one. Light to dark brown flecks of tobacco leaf can be seen when opening up the pouch. Smells like a typical VaBur with a slight sweetness that is the Cavendish I presume.
Loading this tobacco isn't that difficult. Keeping it lit without clogging your tobacco chamber can be the issue. I have had success by just simply dropping the little pellets in and filling up the pipe (loading it like a shot gun casing as an acquaintance put it) After that all you need is a light tamp when you've put in the amount of tobacco you want to smoke. If you push too hard, air won't circulate as well when you're 1/4 down the bowl. You have to start this with a thorough light to make sure that all the cubes on the top are smoldering. Tamping lighter than you normally would with a ribbon or course cut is key. Tamping too much will compress the cubes and there won't be enough oxygen between them to continue smoldering. Think BBQ charcoals.
Now onto the smoking experience. The VAs and Cavendish start the show. It's sweet and a little tangy at first. But very pleasant. Towards the 1/4 mark the burleys come into play and the cavendish takes a back seat. You can really start to pick up on the red virginias and they are definitely supported by the burleys. Smooth sweet, nutty, velvety smoke is what you can expect. This tobacco can have a big bite if smoked too fast. Smoke slowly and probe the flavor dimensions of this tobacco with each puff. It is very enjoyable.
If you have tried GL Pease Barbary Coast, you might be familiar with this style. The Red Vas in that blend are more pronounced and there is more of an earthy feeling with the lack of Cavendish and bourbon(?) topping. If you tried that and it wasn't sweet enough, this could be ticket for you.
This is a great tobacco for breaking in a pipe as the sugars from the cavendish and the burley's natural caking properties do a wonderful job on coating a fresh bowl. I think the only reason I give this 3 stars is that the lighting can be a little finicky.
This blend, as are most PS blends, is a wonderful tobacco with a price point that allows for those 1 oz test orders. If you like Virginia Burleys and want to try a new tobacco, this should be in your cart.

It's best to gravity pack this blend. Watch out for cube embers leaping out of the bowl and burning a hole in your clothes, and your cat, too. It takes a few lights to get it going, and you'll have to relight a few times as you smoke. It's a blend best sipped as it is a slow burner, and if you puff fast, may nip at your tongue. The toasty, woody, earthy burley is the lead component. The burley doesn't have much nuttiness to it, but does sport a molasses taste reminiscent of Carter Hall. The red Virginia cavendish offers mild tangy dark fruit, earth, bread, wood, and a few grains of sugar in a condimental role. The cool, clean flavor is mostly consistent all the way through, and doesn't leave much moisture in your bowl. The strength is mild, while the taste is a couple of steps past that mark. Has a mild nic-hit. Has a short lived, pleasant after taste. The room note is a tad stronger. More of a two and half star product.

Peter Stokkebye - Cube Cut.
There isn't much to report on the aroma coming from the bag, it's a very simple tobacco one. The colour of the mixture's a straightforward medium brown; O.K., if I'm REALLY pedantic each cube has some brown layers, and some yellow layers, but I don't see inspection that 'up close' particularly necessary, on a whole, it's medium brown!
I gravity feed this one and then just give it a gentle finishing pack, very gently so as not to hinder the burn. And then, mine's quite easy to get burning. The only problem with it is due to the firm construction of the cubes, if I put my pipe down, I only have a VERY short amount of time before the burn becomes extinguished. Cube Cut requires a diligent smoking technique. That's the only fault I can find. It doesn't bite, the smoke's cool and velvety, the nicotine's medium, and the taste is superb. To me, the taste is of sweet nuts: the Burley is the strongest taste, given a slight caramel edge by the Cavendish. When I get past halfway, a chocolate taste comes through: very mild, don't think Bobs Choc Flake, think a MINISCULE sprinkle of cocoa powder. The Virginia doesn't give me much, but I very often struggle to pick out any grass etc when it's been combined with other more flavoursome leaves. On a final note, the room-note's nice!
I added this to an order from Smokingpipes.com with no real expectations in mind, I guess I just thought it'd be summat to review, so only ordered the smallest quantity. Now, after a few good smokes, I wish I ordered the largest pouch available!
Highly recommended.

Cube cuts always have intrigued me as far as easy to carry and load your pipe. Smell out of the 1 ounce sample bag was faintly of vanilla/chocolate with a moisture content right for smoking. I had no problem lighting this nor keeping it lit. It didn't rise out from the bowl while lighting as others have described either. I am more inclined to natural tasting tobaccos, enjoying Irish Flake, Burley Slice, and Aged Burley Flake. PS Cube Cut fits in very nicely for me. It is milder than the three mentioned, but a very set-it-and-forget-it smoke. The pouch aroma did translate into the smoke; mildly, never cloying, and pleasant. Reminded me of the original Edgeworth Ready Rubbed, which was a cube cut (nothing like the now defunct Lane incarnation). Smoked clean and dry to the heel of the pipe, maintaining consistency of burn and flavor without moisture or dottle. No bite to speak of. Just a mild tongue tingle with heavy puffing and the nicotine presence, for me, was mild. This is in league with the best of the Codger Burleys - actually better in my opinion. No chemical taste whatsoever. A nice all day, everyday type of smoke for my tastes and will definitely be added to my rotation. Those seeking a replacement for ERR need not look any further. Highly recommended!

I was interested in trying a cube cut tobacco, and this was a pleasant lightly topped burley/Va. It burns slowly, and the taste is fairly mild. What I got was good and it was on the burley end of the spectrum. I had a lot of success mixing it with things like Sugar Barrel that burn too quickly for me. When smoking it as is, I gravity feed, tamp lightly and enjoy.
The cube "coals" are prone to hop out of the pipe, so be aware...
Edt 7/17/14 I find I am smoking this more frequently, and I find it to be a satisfying smoke by itself. It has a simplicity that I like, and you get used to the way it smokes. I am just about through with 8 oz of it, and I will get more when I run out. I am adjusting the room note to favorable since my wife commented that she really liked the smell of it.
When this is fresh, I leave a few bowls out in a small pyrex custard bowl to dry. It is deceptively moist as delivered and the smoke benefits from the chance to "air" a little.

The Burley used here is superb. I've never had a bad experience with Tennessee Burley, one of my favorites. Nutty with a nice note of cocoa and only a very mild note of earth. The Virginias and the Cav seem to add little more than a very nice sweetness and, unfortunately, a touch of ph bite. The bite isn't bad enough to bother me much, but it does keep this from getting that 4th star.
Mild to medium in body and flavor. Takes a few matches to get it going, but burns well after that.

This is a very nice Virginia/Burley indeed. The cube cut is rather thick and can be a bit tricky to get going, but nothing too bad. The Burley does indeed give it a grassy quality, and the Virginia provides a pleasant toastiness.
The casing complements, rather than overwhelms the tobacco taste. I can't tell exactly what it is, but I get impressions of caramel apple. It smells very nice while burning as well.
There is indeed enough Virginia in it to make it a bit bitey, so slow sipping is your best bet. This is a good quality blend. It never turns ashey or bitter. Rather, it leaves a clean taste on my palate. It never filled my pipe with gunk.
For me this is the tobacco equivalent of meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Nothing exciting, but very warm and comfortable. If you are fond of Burley, or Danish aromatics, I think you will enjoy this. For Latakia and Perique fans, this could make a nice change of pace.

At the end of the day, a 1-5 star rating is not very useful. It's either a good blend or not, and the question after that is whether you like it. It is possible to like bad blends for their imperfections, or to note that a good blend is not your thing. I rate this one "Highly Recommended" because anything else is waffling and the only waffles I like are at IHOP (avoid Waffle House; it's a hipster joint).
This blend features little cubes of pressed Burley, Cavendish, and Virginia. The Cavendish wins out at first, but then the warmth of the Burley rises, and the ketchup-ish gentle sweetness of some quality matured Virginias then appears in the mix. There might be a slight topping because there is a molasses-vanilla flavor. My tongue receives the slight burn of an alcohol/sugar/flavoring topping.
Within those parameters, this is a great burn. The room note is bready with overtones of ketchup. When you stick it in the pipe, a gravity fill followed by a hard tamp to avoid having the little cubes explode and blast burning embers all over your shirt, this blend burns easily and provides a gradually changing texture of its constituent flavors. If it has a flaw, it is in the small amount of vanilla topping and the lack of Nicotine, which from a Burley-centric blend is sort of alarming. But, I could easily smoke this all day and never get bored, and enjoy myself during the process as well.

Peter Stokkebye- Cube Cut
Bought this bulk from an online retailer about 2 weeks ago, thus far have smoked 4-5 bowls.
A light aromatic burley blend, beautiful cube cut, needs a little drying time, but overall smokes great even without.
Nutty earthy burley flavor, with a mild vanilla-esque flavor, most likely from the cavendish, this blend reminds me of Rattray marlin flake but much better and easy to pack.
This blend cannot be beat for the price. Will need to grab a larger amount next time put in a jar, as this is one I can see myself grabbing frequently as a change of pace.

This lovely little gem was a pleasant surprise for me as I was given a very generous sample of it at a recent pipe show.
Stokkebye's Cube Cut is a classic burley. Unpretentious and simple, but delightful. It loads and packs effortlessly--just pour it into the pipe, give a gentle press with a thumb, and it's good to go. Due to the density of the cubes, a slightly longer than average flame is needed to get this blend burning, but it stays going very nicely once it starts. I like this and other cube-cut burleys for smoking on breezy days when the slow burn associated with this cut keeps things from getting too hot.
The taste is solid and satisfying for the burley lover. Nutty, toasty, and a bit bitter. But there is an omnipresent background sweetness from the Virginia that adds some depth to what would otherwise be a bit monotone. This tobacco also, as is the case with many burleys, comes with a bit of a nicotine kick. It's not a scary wallop, but it's definitely there. The low sugar content means little bite (in fact, none in my experience.) This is a good evening tobacco and is nicely complemented by a bourbon accompaniment.
I've enjoyed smoking this. It is simple and straightforward. It is easy to prepare and to smoke. It is unchallenging but satisfying. And the bulk price is an excellent value. This is definitely one that is worth keeping to hand. My three-star, rather than four, rating is a reflection of the blend's simplicity and not of its quality or enjoyability.

I've been hunting for a favorite cube cut burley/va I smoked decades ago. (Mixture 222 or something like that, I think) This isn't it, but it's okay, and the price is attractive.
This is really, really, cube cut, kind of like thousands of little hard identical tobacco pellets. The aroma seems more like a Va than a burley to me.
As others have said, it needs to be packed in a tall, skinny bowl via the gravity and light tapping method. It takes some skill to light, and is prone to a few relights. However, eventually it will burn to the bottom of the bowl -- IF you are smoking outside with a gentle breeze. I stopped smoking it indoors, because of the attention needed to keep the ember going.
Don't wear your fav sweater while smoking this -- the little cubes are prone to leaving the bowl at the slightest bump and seem to burn more eagerly outside on clothing than inside the pipe bowl.
All that said, it's an okay smoke once I got the hang of it. Occasionally, it delivers a bit of the taste of the cube cut I smoked decades ago. Just pack it right, get it lit, sip it calmly, let it go out if that's what it wants to do, and you'll have an enjoyable 40-minutes or so. Maybe it improves with age. We'll see.
ADDED 4.3.13 -- PC is right about the few skills needed to fully enjoy Stokkebye Cube Cut, so after some practice I'm adding a star to my earlier review. CC belongs in the honorable company of honest smokes at better-than-honest price, and I've added a good quantity to my Mason jar collection. I just came in from a smoke in my Comoy bent pebble grain (group size 3 is my guesstimate), and after the charring light went to the bottom of the bowl. Very gentle tamping and a slight Spring breeze might have helped. As a nice bonus, CC leaves my briars dry and smelling like quality tobacco. My cobs like CC, too, and it ain't bad combined with some aged 5100.

I'll keep this really simple, as this is a wonderfully simple tobacco.
It looks like Grapenuts cereal, don't confuse the two. You will regret it.
I just dip my cob into the jar and what i capture in the bowl with a finger is what i get. Tamp it. Char it, and work SLOWLY. You will probably relight a dozen times, so keep that mini-bic handy. once it gets going and starts to soften up, grab the tamper and push the coals together to keep it going.
Don't bend over, or laugh while smoking......your clothes will hate you.
What does all of this get you? Smooth, earthy, nutty, toasty burley bliss. One of the best bargains out there and a great way to explore burley tobacco with out going to a goopy drug store blend. Also great for breaking in a new pipe and building some cake without a ghost.

I have been moving into burleys lately, Orlik's DSK, Solani's ABF, and McB's HH Old Dark Fired.
I sampled this at a Brick and Morter store and then promptly went online to order more.
The only way I can explain my attraction to it is that it is a very approachable blend: the cube cut is so easy to pack and it stays lit, the topping or casing is pleasant but doesn't overshadow the taste of the Bur/Va tobacco, and the burley definitely shines.
Regarding the topping debate on this one: I definitely smell something extra in the tin note. But I like it and, again, it's not over powering.
Maybe I'm in a phase but I'm on my third bowl and feel as though I could finish my mason jar stock tonight.

PS Cube Cut is another bulk blend that's just blowing my mind! It's absolutely delicious. The toasted, mildly nutty, earthy Burley lead and meld with the sweet bready Cavendish pressed red Virginia. Mutted and smoothed notes of honey, dark molasses, cocoa, mild cigar and coffee develop throughout the bowl. If packed loose it can be a light smoke, or if packed more firm, a subtle but wonderful medium bodied edge comes out in the blend. This is like a dark nutty version of Superior Navy Flake. I love the Cavindish note in the retrohale. It has a faint spice if pushed hard. The nic hit is mild in a medium bowl. Rubbing out the cubes makes it easier to light. In the pipe it smolders but burns pretty steady. Lots of tamping and fusing will keep you lit and happily puffing.

What a cool tobacco this is! Pouch aroma is slight cocoa, with maybe a touch of natural vanilla.
Ill echo a few comments made below. Yes, this isn't a blend you pack, this is a blend you load. Gravity fill. Tap the side of the pipe a few times and load again. tamp slightly. Also, the cubes WILL fall out, so be careful after its lit.
Initial lighting takes just a few matches, once the top layer is ashed over, you do not have to worry much about relights. Especially if you smoke it on the dry side as I do.
Great flavors of a semi-sweet, less nutty burley than I am used to. A hint of cocoa as well keep this blend from becoming monotonous. This blend can get bitter if puffed to hard, so take small sips. Generous amounts of smoke, the room note is quite pleasant. Toasty and buttery aroma. Burns clean and cool, the remaining ash reminds me of an overnight burn of oak in the woodstove. Some gray ash remains, along with little lumps of charred cubes. This is one of my favorite blends to smoke in the spring while trout fishing the streams and rivers here in Michigan. Stays lit, with little attention while tying on a few dry fly. This is a perfect blend for me transitioning from cold winters smoking rich Balkan and stout Latakias.

Cube cut. Now that's interesting. This is a first for me, I think. It's literally a bunch of tiny cubes. Pressed flake that has been diced. Medium brown in color. Jar note is mild tobacco, pleasant, but unremarkable.
Seems like the best way to pack the pipe is to gravity fill, lightly tamp, and spark it up. Trying to pack this too tightly would lead to a big plugged off mess. It's not necessary to fill the pipe heavy anyway - it burns slow, like you'd expect a flake to perform. Moisture level seemed just right to me, but it does benefit from a bit of drying time. As for flavor, there's maybe a very light casing, just a bit of sweetness, but nothing you can put a finger on. It's mostly burley, nice and nutty. There's a good amount of grassy/hay Virginia as well. And that's about it. I wouldn't say it's one dimensional, but it's straightforward and certainly not complex. I haven't smoked Carter Hall in a long time, but as best I can remember, Cube Cut's flavor reminds me of a richer and fuller Carter Hall.
Burn is good, requiring an average number of relights. It makes for a nice long smoke, as it burns slowly like a flake.
Nothing outstanding here, just a nice simple burley with a good amount of Virginia. Not mind blowing, but quite good, and I think Cube Cut is an excellent buy at its price point. The Virginias taste young, and I'm curious and hopeful that this will get better with age, and plan to buy more for the cellar.

This is rapidly becoming a favorite of mine. I agree completely with most of the points expressed in the foregoing reviews. The tobacco is flavorful, has a bit of a tang, must be sipped, has a nice room note, has no noticeable casing, and is sometimes hard to get started. Where I differ is in the packing technique required.
When I first smoked Cube Cut, I used my customarily loose fill, practically a gravity fill. Had a devil of a time keeping it lit. Set it aside and nearly forgot about it. Saw a post in a forum I frequent that cube cuts require a firm pack to keep the ember progressing through the bowl. Tried it and it worked like a charm. I pack this tobacco far firmer than any of the ribbon cuts I normally smoke. Not only that, but I tamp frequently and firmly as the bowl progresses.
I've been rewarded with bowls that burn to the bottom with only one or two lights. Not only that but the pipe bowl never gets more than warm throughout and there are no flaming bits flying out if the bowl get jarred.
So, by all means, try the loose fill; it may work for you as it has for others. But if not, try a firm pack; it may work as well for you as it has for me.
One other thing; this is not a brainless smoke. There are better choices if you need something to puff on while stacking firewood or clearing snow from the drive. It takes some concentration to carefully sip this smoke and enjoy its flavors. If you get to puffing too hard, it will deliver a serious bite. I've found that it is best when reserved for those times when you can just sit and smoke without distraction.
YMMV

A mostly mid brown cube cut tobacco. It has soft cocoa and caramel aromas on the pouch note.
This is practical tobacco. No rubbing or drying; just drop into bowl and light. Might need a second confirming light after a minute but otherwise you are good to go.
This is basically a VaBur, with addition of PS 'Dutch Cavendish', which is sweet and pleasant but nothing at all like the Cav of OTC aromatics. I would not consider this an aromatic at all and the overall profile of the smoke is mild and neutral with a hint of sweetness and spice.
Excellent value and a true friend in the pipe.

I'm a big Peter Stokkebye fan and Cube Cut adds to the list of excellant tobac's that cost so much less than the competition.
Nice sweet Virginia's used along with a good nutty Burley. To taste i'd say the mix is 50/50 Va/Bur.
The Bite: This does bite a bit and towards the end of the bowl it also tends to smoke a little hot.
The solution: Smoke this in a bigger pipe. Think Dunhill grade 4 and above. It massively reduces any bite and smokes much cooler.
If you want a stronger smoke then pack this tightly. I've found you can press this stuff down very hard and it still smokes perfectly and also gives a fuller smoke.
For the money, definitely 4 stars.

A wonderful cube cut tobacco that I am always stocked up on. Over the years I haven't enjoyed very many cube cut blends because they are usually very strong burleys. This one is different. The burley is not too dark and nicotine laden as usually is the case. The addition of some red Virginia and a little cavendish is brilliant! Sometimes I even add a little extra red Va.(5100 that I thankfully stocked up on). This burns low and slow, keeping it cool and tasty. It has a sort of bready tin note to it that I really like which also comes out in the smoke. This blend stays very well within the Stokkebye tradition of reasonably priced tobacco that burns well and has a nice natural taste, great working in the garage/yard blend. Personally I never have any trouble with it popping out of the bowl...just don't overpack it.

Very pleasant, tasty and simple. While I wouldn’t call it strong by any means, the burley does add a bit of heft and throat tingle. I can’t decide if there is a flavored topping. If it’s there, it’s very lightly applied. I’m more inclined to think there is a sugar casing that caramelizes a little bit. The sweetness isn’t cloying, but always there and I think to good effect. It really brings out the nutty cocoa flavors of the burley. By last third of the bowl it’s almost chocolatety. The Virginias provide a malty tangy dark fruit taste in the background that keeps this from being monotone. Other than the two components complementing each other, it’s not really complex, but I don’t think it was meant to be. It’s not an aromatic, but just a bit too sweet to be a purely “natural” blend, though it is definitely tobacco-forward with the burley predominating. Nic level was medium.
While I always have a hard time judging the room note of something I’m smoking, I’m sure most people would find it very nice.
IMO it does need a bit of drying time, as otherwise it can be hard to light as others have noted. But dried a bit, I’ve never had an issue either getting it lit or keeping it lit. Just do a careful charring light/tamp/relight and you’ll be all set.
Like a lot Stokkebye blends, the quality far exceeds the price, and this blend is fantastic fresh (unlike LBF or LTF). That value and its consistent availability make it a great candidate for bulking up a cellar.

Peter Stokkebye Cube Cut is a light aromatic that I’m sure will please smokers who want something clean, simple and fragrant that smells and tastes like a boutique muffin. True to its name, the tobacco is cube cut, medium red and light brown to golden in color. Bag note is bran muffin, with orange and vanillin added. I gravity load CC and there is no boil as it is eventually lit. I get mostly lightly toasted Burley/nuts, like Grape Nuts, with very little dry meadow grass and dark fruit leather from the specially-cured, red VA. The vanillin is quite noticeable from top to bottom, and it stays slightly forward of the tobacco, but just. Strength is mild. Tastes are mild. Room note is very pleasant. Aftertaste is the best of the smoke, unless one smokes it in a large bowl, in which case there is burned vanillin in the end.
As for a rating, I have to say, I imagine that PSCC might just be a 4 in relation to others of its ilk, which is to say, very light aros. However, since I don’t smoke this sort of tobacco often enough to really draw a bead on it, I can only go so far as a 3, recommended as-is to anyone who thinks it sounds good.

Now here's a tobacco that took my by surprise. I tried it on a whim not expecting much. I'm no fan of Burley (though I do enjoy a good one from time to time, and wouldn't stop smoking my pipe if Burley was all that was available). I just wanted to give the cube cut thing a shot. And wow. What a fantastic tobacco. The Burley was definitely in the drivers seat for the first few minutes, but then the blend settled down and the Virginia Cavendish really shined through. It has a lovely sweetness and good body. Burns well if you pack it properly (gravity feed then tamp down slightly). Very complex, with the different components making themselves known at different times throughout the bowl. This to me is just a plain old fashioned no-nonsense tobacco that is suitable for any occasion, all day long. Quite possibly one of the best bulk blends on the market, and better than many tinned offerings. Try it if you're a fan of pure natural tobacco taste. You won't be disappointed.

Deceptively moist tan to dark brown cubes with a bag aroma (1 oz sample) of mild chocolate and potting soil. Not the best scent. Then again my reference cube cut, Peretti's BPC, doesn't smell so nice either. Gravity loaded to about 4/5 to the top of the pipe bowl.
This isn't your average OTC-type burley, as it mostly eschews the basic nuttiness for a sweeter presentation, albeit a nutlike rather than a sugar sweetness. Reminds me a bit of Uhle's Blend 00, although not as rich in flavor. The Virginia adds some sweetness and there is probably a light casing as well from the Cavendish but I can't place the flavor. It may be simple sugar but that doesn't make it tongue-wrenchingly sweet. I gave this some drying time as it doesn't take the match easily and drying gives the flavor a nice forward push rather than trying to suck through the moisture. Once dried, it smoked without relights all the way to the bottom. Smoked slowwwwwwly, this one remained nice and calm, with a good burley/Virginia flavor that remained steady down the bowl. A nice "set it and forget it" smoke. A little richer taste wouldn't have hurt but this one seems to be made as an all-day affair. As with most PS blends, I find it good but not something I'd cellar.

PS 41 is primarily a VA-Burley thin pressed flake with some Cavendish, cut into small cubes slightly larger, and not too different in appearance from Grape Nuts. I fired up a bowl "right off the truck," and was quite pleased. I brought a sample in for a BOTL co-worker, who was also duly impressed. When it went on sale at P&C the next week, we went in together on a bulk order.
Tin note: In my case this would be "Ball jar note." Basic burley tobacco aroma with some sweetness.
Texture: As noted above, PS 41 is a "cube cut," which is a pressed flake, a thin one in this case, cut into small cubes, like Grape Nuts cereal but bigger. It's not all cubes, as pieces break off, and they're not all dice-like perfect cubes either, but that's the general idea. I have approx. a half pound of it in a 20 oz Ball jar, so it's fairly dense - I normally get less than a half pound of ribbon cut to fit in a quart jar. To load the pipe, I employ gravity fill with slight tamping after the initial toasting.
Appearance: little sorta-cubes, abt 1/8" to 3/16", colors varying between light and dark brown.
Burn: It arrived by mail slightly damper than I prefer, as do most bulk tobaccos. My first bowl burned well at first but then got a little soggy toward the bottom, requiring a few relights, and then I had to dump out the balance. I put a dessicant pack in the jar for a few hours, then let it sit (sealed) overnight to stabilize the moisture level, and that seems to have done the trick. Stayed pretty dry down to the bottom of an MM General bowl, just requiring a few relights toward the end. The size of the cubes seems to be about right - unlike some flakes, no "rubbing out" was required, so the small cubes seem to have about the right surface area to volume ratio for steady oxidation. You do have to careful when dumping the ashes, as the partially-burned cubes tend to fall out along with. Tongue bite: none.
Flavor: Excellent. The burley flavor is predominant, and the VA complements nicely. I don't really detect the Cavendish which supposedly is in there, but Cavendish by itself is pretty subtle, so it might just be there in the background helping with the burn. There is some sweetness which may be a mild topping or from the VA. Other reviewers have noted chocolate or vanilla notes, but to me it's more of a straight tobacco flavor with hints of whole wheat toast. The flavor doesn't change much throughout the bowl, but like most tobaccos, it gets a little bitter if I smoke it too fast. Overall, a very nice blend, subtle, not too complex. Sort of like Half and Half without the medicinal flavor.
Strength: medium vitamin N.
Room note: I don't usually pay much attention to room note, as I'm normally smoking alone, but for the sake of comprehensiveness I'll include it here. Bruck: "Honey, how does this tobacco smell?" Mrs. Bruck: "Get out of the house with that thing!" Once outside, Bruck: "OK, now how does it smell?" Mrs. Bruck: "Pretty good."
In summary, this is an excellent, and fairly inexpensive, tobacco with good flavor, requiring some drying for optimal burn.

This is a hard tobacco to enjoy. Not since I began smoking tobacco 20 years ago have I suffered mouth burn and tongue bit as I have from this. I have also learned not to give up too quickly and tried in different pipes. For the most part, this tobacco is hard to smoke, will bite easily and can lead to strong/long pulls which lead to mouth burn from hot smoke. It is hard to light, and what I've found works is to toast the top layer without drawing through the pipe for a few mins to get the top layer "toasted." The best advice I can offer is that this works best in a small diameter bowl with tall sides (chimney style). That resulted in a flavor rich smoke and allowed the cubes to burn well. It has quite a nicotine hit. Tough to enjoy, but does have nice burley flavor once going.

I bought a 5 pound bag of this about 9 months ago as I plan to cellar a lot of it to try at different intervals over the next several years. This is a mild and nutty smoke. If done properly, you will never tire of this blend. Don't pack it; just tap the sides of the bowl until it settles, then give it a very light tap on top before lighting. Make sure you don't "over-light" it by trying to suck big mouthfuls or you will taste a "burn-scorch" that is a bit like burned toast. It is most unpleasant and can turn you off the blend for a while. I've smoked many bowls of this blend. When I first started smoking, I liked the taste a lot. That, coupled with the idea that I had to light as many little cubes as I could in order to cut down on relights, caused me to experience a sensation similar to biting into a bagel that had been toasted with a blow torch for about 40 minutes. Not sure what it is that causes this, it is unlike any tobacco I've ever tried. Don't get me wrong, the baccy is not that touchy. You can puff at reasonable intervals, and get yourself a healthy mouthful of delightful white smoke; just don't pull like a drowning man who has just surfaced for air.
Update 8/25/10: aged a bit this blend only gets better. A lovely bread flavor on first light, followed by a nutty flavor. There is an underlying sweetness that is followed by a bit of "tart" (sweet-tart?) on the tip of the tongue. Make sure you don't over-dry the blend before lighting. Worth aging. With a normal amount of controlled puffing, you can smoke bowl after bowl of this and it will reward you with a mild nutty aroma from the start, and a develop a subtle sweet taste as it progresses. It takes a bit of practice to keep the little cubes lit, and I wouldn't recommend it coupled with activities that require much motion. The cubes can fall out if you are tipping your pipe to violently, and they are often glowing orange. I have decided to give the blend 3 stars. As I said before, it reaches the mark because it is near perfectly done for what it is intended, a lite cube cut nutty flavored blend that can be smoked forever without issue.
Further Update: The tobacco has a traces of a natural caramel taste as long as you pull on it slowly. It is enjoyable but not practical because it can fall out of your bowl if you are doing anything but sitting. I wonder if it would burn better as a flake (and subsequently taste better due to a milder burn). If PS were to put this into a flake, I'm betting they would have a greater number of people trying this blend. Still a good smoke, but could improve with a better cut. still 3 stars.
Update: 2-2014 About 4 1/2 years of age this blend does change. While burley does not usually improve with aging, this blend is an exception probably due to the VA component. I will say this also, there is a significant VA presence in this tobacco. PS VA's, in my opinion, change more dramatically than other VA's. they become darker and sweeter to a greater degree than, for example, FVF. I'm still leaving this at 3 stars because that is where I started and it certainly has gotten better. If I were to change anything I would have started it at 2 stars and then progressed to 3 stars.
There are many who complain of a tongue burn from this blend. I have a very weak tongue ... it will burn or feel like "cloth" after a smoke very easily. This blend MUST be sipped. To do that, you will need to do relights. But it is worth it for the sweet nutty vanilla/carmel flavor that is imparted from only tobacco. I also want to mention that I am quite sure that this is the starter blend used to make Wilke NBB, as well as TB's Grandfather. I suspected this so did a bit of investigating, and while nobody was going to tell me intentionally, after being on the phone with the right folk ...I got the strong impression that I was right about this.

Just a small addition to the many reviews already afforded this fine tobacco. I definitely sense a very mild flavoring/topping. it is very low key, and never turns into that nasty tongue fuzz that the PG laced additives create. Easy to pack, easy to light. Good consistent flavor. Dry it a bit if it gets wet for you and it is still great. Also works in any type of bowl. Try it. It's cheap too.

I like Va/Burley blends and this is a good one. Some here detect a topping but I do not. Just tastes like food straightforward tobacco flavor. The cube cut is fun to play with and is probably the easiest loading tobacco I have tried. It is a little tough to get going not unlike trying to start a coal fire. Once it gets going it needs little attention other than maybe a tamp. I use a triple jet lighter with this and it gets it stoked very quickly. One thing that I have noticed that maybe helpful is after I put a pipe of this down part way through the smoke and come back to it latter the Burleys start exhibiting a nice butteriness. So the old DGT will work well here. Pleasant, with a good bit of strength, no bite and it is absolutely dirt cheap I will be keeping this one in stock. I am really enjoying Stokkebye's blends.I have three of them in my regular rotation and I haven't even tried any of his Luxury Blends yet. Much better than anything MacBaren makes.

I just received 4 oz of this in the mail. I've tried some other cube cuts and not like them very much, complaining of strong raggedy-a$$ burely. I believe crooner is a cube cut, and I hated it. But the reviews tell of a mild pleasant good old brown tobacco. And sometimes that's exactly what I want. This is exactly that. Ever see a scene in a movie, where a guy walks into a bar and says " gimme a beer"? Never mind the brand just give me a beer, because I like beer. That's what this tobacco is. You want to good enjoyable tobacco taste, in a smoke that is easy to enjoy, and little work. Right here. When I opened the package it had a very traditional tobacco smell. A little nutty, a tiny bit grassy, and some cocoa. It's a proper cube, so it loads easy and is easy to clean up. A gentle press locks it into the bowl good enough, but I suppose it could fall out. Takes a flame very easily and lights easily. The only trouble I had was keeping it lit uniformly, for me it tended to burn down in a small area. But there's nothing wrong with stirring the bowl, and retamping. This is not a sticky or messy tobacco to work with so I can live with it. All in all, this is the very definition of an all-day blend. Relights can be a little acetic or creosoteish. But amazingly this tobacco settles right back down and becomes great again in about one second. This tobacco is so easy and enjoyable that I think I'll take it fishing with me this week. Perfect for when your mind is on other things but you still feel like a smoke. This is a great, highly enjoyable blend. With full flavor but a mild temperament. This might be a great blend for an aromatic smoker to start breaking into non aromatics. I will buy much more.

I have found Stokkebye’s Cube Cut Burley to be a very tasty blend of (mostly) burley and Virginia tobaccos which have been pressed together in layers for a time, then sliced, and then diced (cutting across the slices) to form nice little cubes. It’s basically minced tobacco, and it is an uncommon cut to find these days. As noted in other reviews, just gravity-feed the cubes into your bowl and very gently tamp. Leave some space at the top of the bowl as the cubes expand considerably upon lighting. This tobacco seemed at about the right moisture level and it was easy to light and to keep lit. It burned nicely to the bottom of the bowl. There was lots of nutty burley flavor with the Virginia providing a touch of sweetness. This blend is fairly similar to Carter Hall, Prince Albert, Chatham Manor and the like, except it seemed a bit more robust to me. Lots of burley flavor, not too much nicotine, and still mild enough to be an all day smoke for me. And all at a very good price. If you like burley-based blends, you’ll like this. I highly recommend it!

What a great tobacco blend!!! This is awesome I love this pipe tobacco blend so very much, pressed red Virginia and Burley this is such a great smoke, it is so smooth and sweet and having a serious nutty undertone with that tang of Virginia it has me going mmm all the way down, no bite and its earthy natural taste is what I long for in a fine tobacco, this would be great for a beginner especially to turn them on to a wonderful neutral tobacco with so much depth and character. Upon first light it has the best taste and just keeps on giving as you smoke it down and near the end the depth of it is so smooth its quality is very high and in good standing for a all natural tobacco. The tin note is sweet and tangy and smells so good two thumbs up. For packing this tobacco simply gravity feed it into a thin more upright pipe basically with a narrow bowl and you'll be on your way. Once you fill the pipe tamp it lightly but really just press it down slightly with your pinky and light. Then make sure you char it well and then tamp it down lady style and that will get the job done and enjoy, I would let it sit out for a half hour or so otherwise you will find yourself lighting it over again a few times but I could really care less about that because either way its so dang good. It does not pull a snap crackle pop on me and I could only see it biting if you smoke it like a idiot and your trying to keep your face warm on a cold winter night!!! Lol but really if you love burley you will love this and if you love red Virginia you will love this because its that simple with this. Two freaking thumbs up I could see this going so well with a New Castle Brown or a high grade vodka but thats me because this would go good with just about whatever, last night I was drinking Canada dry ginger ale with it and that was great to. I highly recommend this do not miss out on a truly wonderful pipe tobacco blend.
÷UPDATE÷ Tested&Proven Packing and Lighting (Christopher Method) I tried all kinds of different ways to find a fire proof way to pack, light and smoke this fine blend, well with much testing over and over I now can enjoy a pipe of this all the way down and enjoy every bit of it. I'm not a dang know it all I just took alot of time with this blend and tested and worked it over and over and here I am with a perfect full proof method, so go on and give it a go and the only thing you'll get out of it is the enjoyable smoking pleasure of this fine tobacco with no tounge bite or constant relighting. (Make sure you use a slim but semi-tall style of a pipe to get the best smoking exsperiance for this type of cut tobacco if possible) 1. Just take the cube cut and free gravity fill the bowl about 3/4 of the way up. Then rub alittle bit of the cube cut out and fill the rest of the bowl up with it and give it a light tamp. Give it a typical char lighting then tamp it down once again. 2. Smoke it like you smoke any other blend but just don't smoke it hot and heavy you do not want it to burn hot, besides avoiding tounge bite you do not want to miss out on the wonderful taste it has to offer. 3. As you smoke it down just continue to tamp down lightly as you smoke on and use your two fingures to fan the top to keep it going and you'll find the rythem of it quickly and have a awesome smoke until its all finished. This has allowed me to smoke and enjoy this cube cut to the fullest and always relaxed the other ways is constant relighting and always farting with it going out all the time and trying to keep it going. You wanna be able to sit back and smoke this to the end with no hassle and being half way gone before you get it going finally and that's it. I hope this helps and gives you the best dang smoke you can have with Peter Stokkebye's Cube Cut Good Luck!!!

Peter Stokkebye Cube Cut: Bought this 2 year-old tobacco from a friend. The cube cut is an interesting challenge to smoke. Don't pack it tightly because the cubes expand when they burn and you may have tobacco heaving out of the top of the bowl when you light it. I use gravity to load the bowl and stop short of filling the bowl by about 1/4 inch to leaf room for expansion. Due to the shape of the cubes, it is easy for a lit cube to tumble out of the bowl and burn your shirt or pants if you are not careful. It takes some effort and care to light this blend without burning your tongue. Be prepared to relight several times. You want to be careful about puffing too vigorously, particularly when you are lighting it for the first time. You can experience bite if you do. The initial flavor is of Burley with an early threat of a bite from the Virginia. The natural sweetness of the Virginia comes out with slow, careful puffing. Mid-bowl brings a balance of flavors between the Virginia and Burley, nutty, bold Burley flavor and subtle Virginia sweetness. The finish brings more of the Virginia taste to the front, with the Burley fading slightly. I smoked it in a Comoy's Guildhall billiard and a Missouri Meerschaum that is about 40 years old. I like the taste of this tobacco, but the bite factor brings down my rating to 2 stars.

This isn't a bad smoke, but like other stokkebye tobaccos I find there to be an issue with consistency. I've ordered this a few times over the years and I've noticed the cut and colour is never the same as the order prior. This might remind one of the original Kentucky Club in terms of cut (at least the last few lots ive bought) and the flavour isn't a bad match for an old Edgeworth RR smoker. There is no topping detected and the leaf isn't overly stout or boisterous. It burns relatively smooth the whole way down but can get hot if you try to jumpstart it when the embers dwindle. It's worth a try if your into burley/va natural blends, the simplicity here is really it's shining attribute.

I love Burley so this one has not been difficult to like. It's a no nonsense Burley in a Cube cut, blended with some VAs. It burns slowly and, because of its cut, you want to only gravity fill without pressing down the tobacco. Otherwise it will become difficult to light up and have it burning. The taste is of typical, good quality Burley: nutty with a coco whisper. The VAs add a bit of sweetness, but just barely. The nicotine is on the low side, but it's there just enough to keep me interested. There is an occasional bitterness but that's typical of Burleys. Overall a very nice tobacco that helps me to relax.

Smells like molasses/chewing tobacco with a touch of chocolate if you stick your nose in the jar.
The cube cut flakes demand a gravity fill and a very light tamp before lighting. Initial light can be a bit fussy due to the smaller surface area of the little cubes, but once lit it is mostly trouble-free.
As for the taste, imagine Carter Hall with a bit of Cavendish. The topping is nearly identical. No nicotine to speak of. The Virginias will bite a little if rushed.
I’d give it two and a half stars if it’d let me.

Truly remarkable, I am very pleased with this tobacco. It is quite easy to pack, the tin note is unbelievable with hints of vanilla and sugar cane, very nutty and mellow on the palate, and it does not develop any harsh spots at any point in time. The fact this is a cube cut, means it is very slow burning and easy to smoke. I can detect a topping of some sort, but it is not overpowering leaving enough room for the other tobacco components to show. Also, it evolves quite nicely as you progress with your smoke. It has tangy notes from the virginia leaf it contains. I cannot detect any cavendish, but now and then I am hit with faint chocolate notes that come and go. Highly recommended if you are a burley lover.

Good basic blend, for those times when I want an easy-going, Carter Hall kind of smoke. I may actually prefer this to CH now that I think of it, but I'll keep both around to be safe. Gravity fill it, don't stuff it, and I normally give it 2 or 3 pre-lights to get those cubes all expanded and evened out. Then take it low and slow to avoid any bites. Probably my favorite Stokkebye and one I can smoke back to back bowls of if I so desire.

This a very tasty blend, who ever came up with blended burley and virginia knew his or her tobacco.
The order came just a little moist ,so dry time is need for me. I took th advice of several posters and used gravity fill bowl. What I don't have is a tall skinny bowl, so I use a Sasieni Dublin works like a charm. The burley will bite, just a bit but the Virginias are sweet and grassy, burley are are nutty and earthy.
Takes a little skill to keep lit, but what is a few cents of lighter fluid compared to the taste and relaxation this blend render's? Well worth the money and then some, satisfy the codger in you if you have just a taste for burley . Enjoy.

This tobacco is tasty in my ancient Dr. Grabow Duke briar aged a few months. I get a sweeter result from a full bowl of a Mark Twain cob. However, in my Savenelli Roma and my old Paronelli the taste is not as sweet. Excellent room note according to my wife and it usually smells and tastes like sweet toast. I am currently aging a pound of this tobacco.

PS Cube Cut was another of my stops to find a replacement for Sir Walter Raleigh. This is a straight cube cut, whereas SWR is a mixture of cube and crushed plug (or, at least, some loose non-cube tobacco).
I have had nothing but trouble with this from the get-go. Hard to light and get going, I have (as suggested below) tried "toasting" the top, rubbing some of it out and placing the result on top, and topping the bowl of Cube Cut with some other ribbon cut tobacco. I have gravity packed, tightly packed, packed, unpacked and repacked. Nothing has worked consistently. I always end up with either a bowl in perpetual need of relighting or scorching my tongue. Now, when I look at this mixture I have visual flashbacks of the album cover from Frank Zappa's "Weasels Ripped My Flesh".
I used to think SWR was bad about jumping out of the bowl, but Cube Cut has it beaten by a mile. The few times I have gotten Cube Cut going moderately well have convinced me that not only is it no replacement for SWR, but that it isn't for me.
Somewhat recommended. I'm sure, based on previous reviews, that some will find it pleasant. I'll use what's left of my stash for blending.

Pretty disappointed with this one.
It was slow burning but difficult to keep alight. Nothing special in the taste department. Slight hint of hops at the start and later, imaginings of bourbon whiskey...but they were very faint and distant impressions. What I got mainly was sweetness and tongue bite.

Cube Cut is unique in that it's cube cut. Profound, huh? This neat tobacco packs easily into any pipe without any fuss -- there's really not even a need to tamp this before lighting.
In the pouch, this tobacco has a typical burley smell. That is to say "agricultural" -- the smell of fresh-cut hay. It's not as sweet as Wilke's Nut Brown Burley.
The down side to this tobacco is that it's hard to keep lit. This is probably due to the cube cut. It tends to burn hot when pushed (which sometimes you feel you need to do when it won't stay lit). If you can keep it lit, it burns to a medium gray ash.
This blend is not as rich in the mouth as Nut Brown Burley, but still a good burley flavor. The flavor remains consistent (some may say boring) throughout the bowl. It's a lot cheaper than NBB, and the milder strength makes it more suitable for all-day smoking.
If this were a beverage, it would be Yuengling Black-and-Tan. A good brew, but not the best. Recommended.

I find myself impressed with this tobacco. Not impressed from a complex standpoint, more from its straight-forward taste, texture, and aroma.
This can become "bitey" if smoked too hard and quick, but its flavor is very consistent throughout the bowl. I detect a bit of strength at the last of the bowl, otherwise it is a flavorful smoke from the top to bottom of the bowl.
Mostly a matured virginia plug smoker, and strong enjoyment of the heavy Balkan tobaccos, over the last 10-15 years, I have tried more of the "lighter" mixtures/blends. The cube cut is a change of pace and I like to tinker with packing this in different ways and in adjusting the moisture levels. A reasonable price, I usually buy in 1 or 5 pound quantities.
I usually smoke this in a large group 5 size or oversized bowl, and from packing to lighting, I may wait 20 minutes. Cube Cut is an excellent morning and afternoon smoke and like many burley tobaccos, sets up a nice cake quickly. Very much worth a try, and a tobacco that stays in my rotation.
...a pipe is to be savored...

I like this blend a great deal. As someone had mentioned, this indeed looks like grapenuts...smallish tough cubes which make filling the pipe very easy. The initial lighting is important, spend some time getting it going and you will be rewarded. Dry this one out well and you'll have better luck with it burning more evenly. Now thats out of the way it burns pretty well...a nice slow burn. The aroma is slightly sweetish, like maple, in the bag. Though that maple can't really be discerned in the flavor, it comes up from time to time while smoking in the aroma (very nice) however never cloying. It has that typical nutty aroma but not as strongly as other burlies I've tried. I have been smoking more OTC burlies but wanted something more full bodied and this hits the spot...the VAs help with this. I got a little tongue bite when I first started this bowl but that subsided quickly. The price is pretty good for this, though many online sellers may be out since It took a little time to obtain. Give it a try...Highly recommended.
Update: 09/18/2009 Several bowls later this blend has disappointed me. The tongue bite I experienced slightly seemed to increase and as one reviewer already mentioned it feels like "mouth-bite". My entire mouth was feeling scorched...a shame really since this had so much going for it. I have to downgrade this to not recommended since I'm simply not able to smoke it due to the burn.

This is what pipe smoking is all about. The only other Stokkebye I know is Balkan Supreme, a singularly fantastic blend. Cube Cut is equally fantastic, in its own way.
Small cubes, somewhat logically, that pile up in the pipe and can't be tamped down easily. It tends to go out until enough cubes have ignited, but the patience is well rewarded.
What a flavour -- burley and virginia, as stated -- and I did not detect any real casing taste. Just pure tobacco, burning very slowly. This is similar to the classic burley blends. I have not tried Half-and-Half, but consider this a half-and-half blend. I would not regard Cube Cut as better than the classics, but an addition to the line-up, and I could adopt this as my ERR replacement. I sense some similarities, and would recommend this to anyone looking for a replacement to ERR or an alternative to CH, Sir Walter and the others.
Maybe after some aging Cube Cut will change a little. Some say burleys don't store well, but others don't seem to agree. I plan to sock away quite a lot for the inevitable tobacco drought within the next couple of decades, but will keep some on hand to smoke regularly. At the price, this stuff is almost a gift.
Interesting thing is -- no bite. No little ferrets nibbling the mouth or big dogs snapping their jaws. Not a lot of N punch in this, so I will probably make it my morning smoke.

Stokkebye's "Cube Cut" tobacco has a gentle, very complimentary fruit-like flavoring of some kind; whether it is a top dressing, casing sauce, or natural additive I cannot say. It may even be the magical result of "Cavendish pressing" Tennessee Burley and aged red Virginias (but I doubt it.) It reminds me of the apple-like flavoring I detect in Kentucky Club's "non-aromatic" blend -- the one in the blue & white can. That said, I hasten to add that Stokkebye's use of that flavoring is far more restrained and seemingly appropriate for the blend.
All you need to know about this stuff is covered in kilted1's review of 01/23/2006; and I couldn't describe the experience any more accurately or eloquently. I will say, however, that I had a lot more trouble with it than he did.
My chief gripe owes to my lack of technique in handling the hard, very uniform ⅛" cubes, or nuggets of pressed tobacco. It was difficult to light; demanded way too much attention with the tamper; and resisted every puffing tactic that I tried. I had to puff aggressively to maintain good smoke volume, but that made the tobacco start to bite, and the increased heat also caused the flavor to wash out. If I maintained the right pace to savor the admittedly good taste, I quickly lost the burn. Also, something I rarely experience, every smoke left an unavoidable heel of tobacco at the bottom of the bowl: dry dottle, but dottle none-the-less. Cube Cut burned better in a smaller diameter bowl, but not much better. I also crushed those little wood-like blocks of tobacco somewhat with a mortar and pestle, but that didn't help too much either.
For me the experience was not as pleasant as pipe smoking should and can be. There are too many good, hassle-free tobaccos out there for me to struggle with Cube Cut.
If you are an outdoor smoker, or your technique is better than mine, or you are enticed by some of the more enthusiastic reviews of this blend, then I suggest you first try a sample, available in 1 oz. packages by OutwestTobacco.com for $2.25 as of this writing.

Blends like this have reduced my intake of blends like Granger and their ilk to zero. As the companies which own the venerable trademarks count on the name to make up for gradually declining quality, here is a humble, very reasonably priced alternative.
My tastebuds don't pick up any topping, but I won't argue if yours do; I just get fine quality burley with just enough virginia to stave off monotony.
I had to adjust my smoking technique to deal with what is a new cut for me: just a light fill, about three-quarters of a bowl, and a gentle tamp, and away I go.
I'm quite happy to have taken everyone's advice on this one. Should I mention that this is bliss in a cob?
Just a brief addition. I have been working my way through a pound of this and the room note has recieved nothing but praise from those around me. So, it's dirt cheap, tastes like real tobacco, and generates praise from those near and far. Maybe the next order should be for two pounds?

Toasted grapenuts cereal; I want to put this in milk and serve it to the wife the next time she yells at me for pipe smoking in the house.
This is a decent, good burley in the way that the kid down the street is an honest, hard-working kid. I don't really want to shoot the breeze with him on a daily basis but I'll smile and wave hello.
The burley in here tastes good. The VA gives it mid-body. The first part of the bowl is almost cavendish-sweet but that's gone a quarter of the way in.

A friend sent me a generous amount of this tobacco with the promise of more should I like it (evidently it's not his cup of tea). I didn't know what to expect upon first taking a look, but I must say I found this one a very pleasant surprise. Being a Burley fancier, and lover of all things ?Virginia? this one is a definite winner. I smoke several other Peter Stokkebye offerings and it looks as though I'll be adding another to my cellar.
Appearance: Nice cubed Burley and Virginia presentation that reminds me of ?GrapeNuts? cereal (for those not in the USA or Canada, GrapeNuts is a very ?granular? cereal roughly cubed. The colors vary from tans to a deep chestnut brown
Aroma: This mixture has a deep sweet aroma very enticing. Immediately one smells a deep hay-like quality, not of hay in neat bales stacked in the barn; rather of freshly mown hay, slowly drying in the summer sun. Deep, sharp and earthy. Carmel tones and nuts are evident, as in pecan or butternut. There is a darker scent to this as well leading me to believe that some of the leaf has been toasted in some manor. There seems to be a slight ?fruit essence? used at some point, though just by smelling it alone, I'd be hard pressed to identify it.
This tobacco is nearly perfect in moisture and I employed a gravity feed and a very slight hand packing the bowl. I have chosen a Jan Zeman YPSC 2003 Volcano/Bulldog which I smoke VaBur mixtures in frequently. Several bowls of Cube Cut have been smoked in this pipe to reduce other blend prejudices.
Lighting can be a little temperamental with this one until it really gets going frequent re-lights are necessary. As expected, the initial flavor very Burley, with a thick silky mouth feel, brighter notes of fruits and caramel are evident from the fine Virginia. Hay-like tones and smells and flavors of Autumn are abundant with deepening flavors of nuts and a slight fruit essence (which at least one other reviewer identifies as apple) is noted. While I'd not go as far as to say this is an ?Apple flavored? mixture, I do suspect a small amount of apple essence is used in the product. It is a distinct enhancement flavor, not a dominating one, just ?there enough? to make for interest and something slightly out of the ordinary/
Mid Bowl: Approaching mid-bowl, the fullness tends to build the toothsome mixtures of Burley, Virginia, nuts and apples develop in strength slowly along predictable lines. Slowly and gently the blend comes ?together? building in richness and strength to a level of somewhere between ?medium and full?. The rich buttery mouth feel continues building as well making each mouthful of creamy smoke something one savors, not in any hurry to exhale. Once an even light and cadence are achieved this is a self maintaining blend indeed, needing very little attention of tamper. Maintaining the ash is easy as well, and this slow burning blend usually lasts me well over an hour.
Home Stretch: As end of the bowl approaches, the bowl never really changes. This blend remains consistent throughout. The final third has matured nicely with all the flavors working in deepening harmony. Absolutely no temptation toward tongue bite is noted, very cool and even burn rate noted throughout. This is a favorite candidate for outdoor smoking. While not a complex blend at all, Cube Cut has the kind of richness and fullness of flavors to keep my interest without having to think much about it. It seems the perfect companion for outdoor sporting activities such as hunting or fishing or camping especially in cooler weather. I think this blend and a strong cup of ?camp coffee? would warm the soul in ?deer camp?.
Supplemental Notes: I think that Cube Cut has earned a place in my cellar, maybe not for everyday, but for those times when I long to be outdoors all day in less than ?ideal? weather. Rating for those interested in numbers * stars

09-22-04 there is not much to say other than this is a staple of mine that I always come back to when taking breaks from all the other tobacs I smoke. My friends always harass me because I smoke this blend, but I guess it reminds me so much of my deceased Father, I just have to have this in my rotation always. You either like the Burley grassiness or you don't. Packs easily, lights easily, has a nutty, sweet finish. I find it as a nice palate cleanser. Lastly, you do have to smoke it like a VA otherwise it will bite your tongue.

Strength: Mild to medium. It's there, but it's light. Nicotine is light as well, easily a morning or all day smoke.
Flavoring: None detected. I've gone back and forth trying to decide if this has a topping, there is something in the jar note that could be a topping, but I believe this is the Cavendish process coming though and melding with the Burley and the Virginia,
Taste: Mild to medium. I mostly get a friendly, mellow, sweet nuttiness throughout the bowl. Overall, it's a little sweeter toward the beginning and a little more earthy toward the end, but I've been able to coax out some fruity notes early on and some chocolatey, almost caramel or molasses notes toward the end, although, not in every bowl.
Beard note: Pleasant to Tolerable. Smells just like the blend tastes, sweet, earthy nuts. Once the nuttiness subsides, the distinct smell of tobacco smoke takes over. SO doesn't mind smelling it on me.
Notes: In my experience, this blend ships very wet, so the cubes have needed 2-3 days of drying before they're what I consider dry enough to smoke without issue ("dry enough" being near crispy, it needs to be very dry to stay lit) I prefer to "codger scoop" this blend with my pipe, give the bowl a few firm taps to settle the cubes and then give it a light pack with your finger to get it down below the rim, the draw will be looser than expected, but this is fine as the cubes will expand quite a bit once you light it. Be prepared to give it multiple charring lights before it gets going and watch out for cubes that want to roll out of the pipe. You'll likely need a few relights throughout, also tamping may require a firm hand, but don't overdo it or you'll pack it too tightly. Most importantly, this blend will get hot if you're not careful, so take it slow.
Rating: 4/4, highly recommended. Peter Stokkebye 41 Cube Cut is a really good codger style burley, it's simple, inexpensive and just plain pleasant. For the record, this is my all time favorite tobacco.

PS Cube Cut is a tobacco that left me feeling like something was missing. The predominant (and really only) flavor comes from the burley, with the Virginia and cavendish adding nothing really detectable to the experience. I like burley well enough but I felt as though this tobacco should have had a slightly more complex flavor.
The cube cut is novel and packs easily, but it is a pain to light for the first time and it requires a few relights during the smoke. I did not experience any issues with the lit cubes jumping/falling out of my pipe. YMMV, of course, but this is just not a tobacco I see myself revisiting.

There is a reason why this tobacco is so inexpensive. It only really tastes anything when it's fresh. But the price to pay is a hot smoking tobacco, as it's very difficult to get going; and it bites, however careful with the cadence I have been! The result was, every time, a scorched mouth. When it's finally at an ideal moisture level (after spending several months in a jar), it is still very hard to get going; it may still smoke much better once properly lit and spare your mouth. But...by then (and contrary to quality tobaccos), it has lost all its flavors while tending to smoke on the hot side. After numerous attempts with it, here is some advice: if you are looking for a good Cube Cut Burley (which is why you bought this one, right?), invest more money and get something good such as J.L. Peretti's BPC (Burley Plug Cut). Granted: it's not quite a Cube Cut, but you'll get a valuable and pleasant smoke. GL Pease Barbary Coast, even though it has a Brandy flavouring, is a delicious Cube Cut made with outstanding Burley. Gee, even Sir Walter Raleigh, for about the equivalent price, is better than Stokkebye's Cube Cut! The reality is that sometimes, you just have to pay more. This is a good example. 1 star.

This is an unusual burley blend because the tobacco is cut into little cubes. When smoking this blend you have to be careful not to knock your pipe cause the little guys like to jump out. The burley gives a nice nutty flavor and the molasses topping is pleasant. It requires a slight drying time otherwise expect several relights. Smoke this blend slowly cause the Virginias can bite if your not careful.

This is a classic cube cut burley with just a bit of virginia for sweetness. In many ways, it reminds me of Carter Hall, but in cube cut form. It probably has more of a topping than CH, though, as there is definitely quite a bit more sweet honey type flavor than would be typical in an uncased tobacco.
Burns very slow, ideal for outdoors in windy conditions.

The description of this blend is dead on, you get virginia and burley the whole way, this is not a complex blend at all, the taste in the first puff is the same taste you get 3/4 of a bowl down last quarter of this seems to get ashy taste this is not uncommon to burley blends, this one is for the patient smoker it tends to bite if puff aggressively, the packing that best seems to fit this is to gravity fill one very light tamp, light and go, is very finnicky to what pipe it seems to like, on my case a Savinelli Oscar 310 KS seems to agree with it best. If your a burley or virginia smoker on a budget this might tie you over till better times arrives, but the monochromatic theme that this blend seems to have (semi-sweet virginia with strong burley) does not do anything for me.
Update 1/8/2011 This blend gets downgraded to 1 star the bite never stops with this one no matter what I tried, it has ruin many pipe days, but I will write this it may be more my tongue disagreeing with this more than this blend just being bitey.

I've tried this on a number of occasions and each time it bit the hell out of me. Ageing does not mitigate this. I think this blend is mostly red VA with a small amount of burley which is why it bites so much. It is also extremely difficult to light. The flavor is pleasant enough but extremely mild, too mild to make it worth the effort to smoke.

I really enjoy this baccy a lot. As you are filling the pipe squeeze the cubes and break up or flatten out the cube baccy on top. This will help with the lighting and make for even burning.
I like the flavor of the burley. No bite. Just a enjoyable smoke that will get a compliment or two on the aroma. Some nuttiness and it seems to taste a little bit of caramel.
3 1/2 stars.

I was introduced to this by a member of ASP that has also reviewed this fine tobacco product. I have smoked it daily ever since. I find this blend to be easy to pack, easy to smoke, bite free for me, and because of the Virginia content, sweetens somewhat with age. I have been smoking 2-3 lbs of this stuff a year for the past 3 years. Some detect some sort of topping, at times I can too, but it is so subdued, it is barely detectable. I just like it. To me, it is what a good pipe tobacco should be. It can be difficult to light to uninitiated, but after proper packing is observed, and proper lighting is learned, it provides a good long lasting cool and satisfying smoke. It isn't the wife's favorite, but she doesn't mind the room note too badly, as long as I don't drop any latakia bombs in the house, she is happy. I should also mention that even in today's tobacco tax happy times, 5 lbs can still be had at a great price.
If you like Va/burley blends, and are a fan of cube cut tobaccos, give this a try. I suspect you will like it.

This is a very delicious cube cute burley/Virginia tobacco top flavored with soft honey like, giving a sweet ?cream caramel? and creamy orange after taste, it tastes tobacco and smells very nice in the pouch. Burns slow, easy and clean. Small bowl seems to give better flavor.
I added this one to my 10 top favorite Va/burley list.

I like this tobacco for many reasons. I think it blends well but it is nice on its own too. To my nose there is some fruitiness in the pouch but it is nothing that I would classify as an aromatic. It slowly burns down to a nice white as and never gets too hot, giving my blending habits I like this one mixed in with some Englishes that I think smoke a bit hot.

Slow smoking, relatively full tasting burley with little casing. Can become a bit harsh and bitter. Unaffected by aging.
Pack loosely but be careful of spills.

I got some of this blend to compare it against Edgeworth Sliced and Barbary Coast, and while it does have a bit of resemblance to those, I would not go so far as to say that this blend is a proper bulk alternative to either. However, evaluated on its own merits, this is a fine natural tobacco blend which is very enjoyable.
Rather than a strong grassy note, instead this blend plays more on the woody or nutty flavors typical of burley blends. There is a hint of a grassy flavor, but I find that this blend actually resembles Half and Half more than Edgeworth or Barbary Coast. There seems to be a very light topping reminiscent of apples, as other reviewers have noted, which to me tastes a lot like what H&H uses, except it is much more conservatively applied in Cube Cut.
Upon lighting, one initially tastes the apple type flavor. Then a slight grassy note appears but soon subsides into a rather strong woody and nutty flavor. This blend has essentially zero tongue bite factor, so you can enjoy the full taste without fear. For a burley blend this has heaps of good flavor, so I find that this blend is to my liking.
Overall, Cube Cut is a good tasty burley based blend which reminds me mostly of Half & Half but is a notch or two better in my opinion: it has more flavor yet it is more refined. I'm not sorry that I ordered a pound of this, and for the excellent bulk price I may get more when this is all gone. Considering the good taste and minimal bite factor this batch probably won't last long. I feel like smoking another bowl of it already.

A robust, straightforward smoke. Pack loose and sip slow, with Virginia technique, or it might bite.
Bone dry, it's also a great base layer for any tobaccos on top.
As a straight smoke, it's best behaved in tall, narrow chamber. Good for cobs, but can plug the airway. Pack accordingly.
A good break-in, cake building tobacco, at a budget price. Even if the smoke doesn't suit you, keep an aired-out jar handy for every new or refurbished pipe in your arsenal.

PS41. This blend definitely needs to be talked about more. Most people pass it off as a blending tobacco or are scared of by the cut. This stuff is excellent by itself and the cut is easy to work with after a little practice. I like to slightly rub it out and gravity fill. Wider more shallow pipes work best as it tends to expand quite a bit. May require a few extra re-lights but nothing cumbersome. Be sure to use a pipe cleaner to block the airway when packing. Nice naturally sweet and nutty flavor. The virginia and burley blend perfectly together. Hints of cocoa and spice from time to time. If you are a virginia smoker that wants something slightly different with a little more body this is it. If you are a burley smoker that wants something with a little more sweetness but still smooth this is it. If you have tried burley blends and they are a little to strong or harsh give this a try. It is much more friendly.

PS41 Cube Cut is, as the name implies, a cube cut blend of Burleys and Virginias. From the bulk sample I received, the blend was a little on the moist side, and for me it required some drying time. Through the tin note, I can pickup the Burleys and Virginias separately. There is a honey/brown sugar topping that is apparent.
Upon lighting, the Burleys are up front and center. They are rich, with deep molasses, cocoa, earth, and spices, and are mildly sweet. The Virginias are right behind the Burleys and compete for attention. They are sweet, tangy, and bright with notes of fruit, citrus, grass, and a fruity note from time to time. The toppings are present in every puff. I taste honey and brown sugar. They play well with the tobaccos in the blend, and add an additional touch of sweetness as well. The toppings fade as the bowl progresses, but never completely drop off.
Cube Cut is difficult to light and goes out frequently, so be ready for some relights. I find matches work better with this blend then a regular lighter. It burns a little hot and sports a rough edge, so smoke slowly or you may experience tongue bite. It left a little moisture in the bowl, but not much. The flavor was medium and the strength was a little below that. Not quite an all day blend for me, as I don’t think my body chemistry would allow it. 2.25 out of 4 stars.

The cut reminds me a lot of steel cut oats, or grape nuts. Ready to smoke immediately & Packs easily enough. Tin note is of sweet caramel and bourbon.
I'm first greeted with strong wood notes. I actually wonder if they're an additive, it's that strong, particularly cedar and oak. I also get molasses, vanilla, caramel, hay, oats and toasted bread, the bottom of the bowl gains sweetness and a tiny bit of cocoa. The burley here is less of your normal nuts and chocolate affair, and more earth and woodiness. The flavorings are delightful and add just enough complexity to make things interesting. It's got a good bit of sweetness and a bit of a vanilla bourbon flavor. It is rather bitey if your not patient or just plain susceptible to tongue bite, so tread carefully. Mild nicotine content, but it is noticible after a big bowl. Burns rather slowly.
The subtle sweetness and toppings remind me a lot of MacBarens Scottish mixture and Symphony, both in the way it smokes, and the way it melds tobacco with subtle flavorings so perfectly. It has a quality about it almost like a bowl of porridge or oatmeal with a little bit of brown sugar. Simple, mouthwatering, and has a soul-warming quality I can't quite explain. Simply put: It just works for me.

This is a nice change of pace from my usual traditional English blends. I smoked mine in a large meer and had no problem with it burning hot as a lot of burleys do. A very pleasant and distinctive taste to me. Burns really slow. I had no trouble keeping lit as some reviewers have mentioned. I am continually impressed with the PS line.

Good cube cut, is almost similar in taste to the Luxury Twist Flake, but this has no hint of spice. He instead has an excellent sweetness with an aftertaste of hazelnut, smoke really well, leaves a good feeling on the whole! I would recommend this to anyone who is a lover of this type of blends. In a small pipe .......is better!

This is a most enjoyable smoke, and I have found it easier to light and keep burning than many reviews had led me to believe. Sipped slowly, this blend yields a lovely nutty, sweet burley smoke with a little muscular structure from the VA. More aggressive puffing brings the astringency and edginess of the VA forward. I do not find it particularly complex, but the experience definitely depends on how it is approached, and I find both faces of this tobacco quite enjoyable. I would have named it Janus. It is a high quality tobacco at a nice, low price. I think it is on par with the luxury twist flake, though different. A nice, contemplative, and comforting offering from Stokkebye.

Of all the money I’ve spent on this hobby, the best dollars I spend are on this blend. I love red Virginias and nutty cocoa stout non cigarette smelling burley. I have hundreds of tins and if I had only knew how great this was I would never have bought most of them hunting a taste I wanted with a great room note. It’s a tobacco room note, but a very nice one. The taste is all the great notes about Red Virginia and Burley. I just knew uhles, Peretti, c&d would have that one for me I do like many but PS hit the mark for my personal taste. And is the cube cut 41! If it’s a stokkebye blend I’ll just buy it and try it. Great quality stuff. PSA tho, please learn how to pack and smoke a cube cut from an old timer if you can. No dry time for me, full flavor, light bakery/burley room note. Enjoy with coffee. Some may wish to have food on digest before enjoying. I do find that coffee is enough for me or coffee and a bagel. Wife has no complaints on smell. Definitely an all day smoke and an affordable one at that. My go to blends are Match field and stream, S. ABF. Hiking, Mocha Strips, and PS CC 41.

This is my second time smoking the cubes, each time being intrigued by the packing method; of just shoveling the stuff in without much packing pressure.
These cubes were less defined (likely from being tossed about as a bulk blend) and ended up being mix of rough pieces. They gave off a very pleasant, and sweet aroma beyond the natural Burley/Virginia earthiness, making me believe there is some amount of topping at work here.
Once fired up, the smoke resembles the bag aroma, allowed the natural goodness to come through, and stayed mild - an all day smoker. The cubes did a relatively decent job of holding a slow ember (kinda like a broken cake), but did konk out several times and asked for another match.
There wasn't much here to get overly excited about, yet it all worked for a clean, and simple thrill.

Hay and citrus flavors are noticeable upon initial lighting. About a quarter of the way through, a flavorful sweetness begins to come on. This stuff can be a bit difficult to light, but once you get it going, it burns quite nicely. Puff slowly, and gently, and this stuff really shines. Can't beat the price either!
