Uhle's Blend 300

(3.33)
A graham cracker drizzled with honey, this is the perfect blend for a Burley lover looking for a smidge of sweetness. Ingredients: Cube-cut and ribbon Burley with black Cavendish.
Notes: The description from an older Uhle's brochure reads, "Cube-cut with Honey-Hive flavoring ... just a youngster as our blends go ... since 1948 ... but what a blend! You can smoke it day in and day out and never tire of the flavor. What can you say about a blend like this in a short space ... it's really elegant smoking. Too good to blend with anything else."

The burleys offer a bit of earth, some nuts and molasses, with a little wood and slight sharp and spice notes, including there’s a pinch or two of white burley present. In the background is some brown sugar from the unsweetened black cavendish for a little smoothness. The honey topping mildly tones down the burleys with a light richness, though I prefer to say it works in concert with those burleys. The nic-hit is a shade past the mild level. Won’t bite or get harsh, but has that white burley rough edge. Burns clean just less than at a moderate pace with a very consistent flavor that has a minor savoriness. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and needs a few relights. Has a pleasant after taste, and can easily be an all day smoke.

Just when I thought it couldn't get better than PPB or 00, I tried Blend 300 and think this may be my favorite of the three. This has all the nutty burliness one would want in a burley blend, but also has some elements that differentiate it from the others.

In addition to the Virginia that naturally sweetens most burley blends, 300 also has the honey hive topping, whatever that is. It works well as it is very mild so as not to block out the natural burley flavor. From the topping standpoint this one is a little sweeter than 00, but less so than PPB. It also is a cube cut, which I love. This gets big points for me as I think cube cuts are particularly good with VaBurs. Although a good portion of PPB is also cube cut and may be one of the additional reasons I love that blend. 300 is all cube cut. Cube cuts are hands down the easiest no brainer to pack. It is just like pouring the tobacco in with zero tamp necessary. They also treat you to a nice long smoke, although they do take a little extra lighter fluid to start up.

Uhle's has proven themselves to be masters of the burley leaf and 300 is another great example of why that is. Highly recommended.

Uhle’s is one of America’s few and true pipe shops. Which is a nice thing, but it is the quality of their blends, especially their Burley and the excellent Bishop’s Move (English) that really attracts me to Uhle’s. Blend 300 is a cube cut, kind of “old timey” Burley that is lightly sweetened with honey. I just gravity fill the bowl and settle back for a long smoke. Uhle’s website has Blend 300 listed under their non-aromatic section, but I personally would call this an aromatic, albeit a light one. Either way, the sweet and nutty flavor never turns bitter and burns cleanly. Sometimes, simple is a very good thing and Blend 300 is just that.

Although 00 is my favorite Uhle's Burley, 300 is not too far behind. They are similar but there is an addition hint of honey in 300. I wondered what the added flavoring was as I smoked it a couple of years ago and now I know. Think of Mac Baren's Navy Flake with less steam pressing and in a cube cut form. Yep, then you'd have 300.

I'm a burley fan and a believer that they can give you some very interesting nuance if coerced through proper puffing. Usually burleys will bear out notes that are quite nutty (OTCs), or earthy (C&D), or some combination thereof. They are usually quite linear from top to bottom and generally reviled by both aromatic lovers and anglophiles as having too much 'cigarette' flavor.

This particular burley comes fantastically prepped in a cube-cut and ready to go out of the bag. The sweetness provided by the mild casing/dressing is too light to be perceived in taste, but does impart some noticeable variation on the traditional burley flavor. The nuttiness is quite noticeably absent and the 'rough edges' present in some OTC burleys and even some blending houses of note has been smoothed out quite nicely here.

This could be your all-day everyday tobacco, but don't look for great depth of character in it. This is very dependable and pleasant. My impression of Uhle's in general is quite good after testing #300, #00, and Bishop's Move, a stout English blend.

I have been on a Burley bender lately...and that is a good thing. My pipe tobacco journey has been a rewarding experience, not for this review but this is a truly wonderful hobby that promotes relaxation, thought and the ability to reward the senses with a natural hobby that is steeped in history and tradition. Uhle's is the pinnacle of Burley (well I may not be qualified to say that given my limited expeience with it but compared to others I have tried the Uhle blends are never flat or tasteless, nor are the overly flavored. They have a true talent for blending and flavoring tobaccos and are masters of the art. Blend 300 has a wonderfully sweet tin aroma that smells like Parliment cigarette's with a light vanilla honey aroma. I hate to compare it to cigarettes' but that is what I was a initially hit with. ( I never smoked cigarette's but every relative and friend I had growing up somked and this is what the packs of unsmoked cigarettes smelled like...with a sweet vanilla and honey added). The flavor of this tobacco is really fantastic. The topping/casing is masterfully applied, to really brings out the flavor of the Burley and Cavendish. Toasty, nutty burley with a chocolate sweetness. Brown sugar walnuts and hazelnuts are also present from the synchornous melange of the two tobacco's. There is also a Turkish/Oriental like woodyness to the smoke that is somewhat surprising given the blend. The bowl is not overly complex nor does it change much throughout the smoke. A consistent flavorful smoke, a truly classic tobacco blend. Great with a cup of coffee first thing or with a glass of wine as you wind down the day.

I split a 1.5 oz sample with a friend, so this review is based on just .75 oz or so.

Honey-Hive flavoring... well, ok, if they say so. I've tasted more honey in other tobaccos - it was quite faint in this one, and I'm not even sure it was honey. There was a slightly sweet quality to the cube cut burley, and that sweetness was not what I associate with straight burleys. On the other hand, Uhle's classifies this one as an aromatic, so their definition of same is considerably tighter than my own.

I enjoyed this one as a straight smoke. As with the Perettis BCP I just reviewed, I doubt this will be more than an occasional smoke, but it was nice. The flavor was never overbearing, and this one accepted some overpuffing with hardly more than a whimper. Very gentlemanly blend, with the usual burley nuttiness in every puff. I preferred the additional sweetener in their Perfection Plug but this one is geared toward the more natural side, based on my small sample. I recommend everyone interested in burley try this one, as I find myself constantly amazed at the nuances inherent in many burley blends. That leaf is quite the chameleon at times and at others, quite the pied piper. This is a good example.

Blend 300 is the chicken soup of pipe tobaccoes. Like the old joke says, "It couldn't hurt!"

There is a lot written on this website about a "desert island" smoke, and which blend one would wish to have. Personally, if I were marooned on a desert island, even after 35 tears of puffing, I'd choose Mary Anne and a pack of Luckies over ANY pipe tobacco.

But if I were doing paperwork, stuck in traffic, bored, undecided, watching a baseball game, mowing grass, surfing the Web...or any of the more likely predicaments to beset modern man...Blend 300 would be what I would reach for. Irrespective of one's preference, I doubt there is a true pipe smoker out there who would dump out the pale gray ash of 300 and not feel he (or she) has not had a decent smoke.

The "honey hive" flavoring is barely noticeable, adding just the right sweetness. The Burleys are both creamy and nutty...and it all comes together tasting like TOBACCO!

Highest accolades!

I’m not sure why but every couple of years since 2003 one or two of my reviews dissapears... I have been smoking #300 for quite awhile and I am glad to say it hasn’t changed... cube cuts smoke very cool but one must light them into a raging inferno and then let it settle down.. otherwise you will have light after relight. Sip slowly, make sure it’s dried and be careful not to make a cube jump out and land in your lap. The honey is so light that I doubt you will notice anything but a slight sweetness. Very old times, makes one think of Fireside chats with Roosevelt and real men who wore Fedoras and smoked pipes daily...

A great tasting Burley blend. Earthy with lesser notes of cocoa and nuts. The honey topping is very light adding a nice sweetness. Can't taste the Black Cav. It's a very simple smoke which can become a little tiring unless you're a real Burleyphile. A slow burning, long lasting smoke. I'll be using this as a blender and I think it'll make some first rate VaBurs and BurPers.

Mild to medium in body and taste. Very mild in flavoring. Burns best if the cubes are lightly crushed after drying.
