Clan Shaw Windjammer

(2.33)
African, Turkish and Virginia tobaccos with Latakia added wherein Latakia does not overwhelm the blend. The smoothest Latakia blend ever.

(October, 2003) This is a thin cut, ribbon tobacco with about 50% black and 50% tan & brown leaf in the mix. The aroma is a bit sweeter than expect, probably the Turkish & Orientals and there is the obvious smoky aroma of Latakia. There seems to be a lite topping which I cannot identify but it does not carry over into the smoking experience. This tobacco came in a one ounce sampler packet and was a tad dry but that's the way I like it, so it was perfect for me. The label calls this an English blend but I would calssify it as a Balkan blend. Upon firing this up the Oriental, Turkish and Virginias come up right in your face. The Latakia is almost none existent but it's there, in a supporting role. The initial flavor profile is slighty spicy, semi-sweet and a little tart, really very nice! The flavors stay that way through the first third of the bowl. In the middle, the Latakia moves forward slightly but never dominates. The final third is where this blend really gets good. The spicyness picks up a little and there is a distint pungent sweetness that develops. For the most part, the Orientals & Turkish seem to dominate this blend. There is a bit of complexity and the flavors are rich & tasty. Nicotine seems modest at best. 4 out of 5 Flakes - Recommended!!!

At first, when I opened the pouch, the Latakia was obvious. The VAs and Turkish were also present in the pouch scent. It does come a bit on moist side, but it is a cleaner moist than McClellands. Upon first lighting, I thought that it was a bit reminiscent of Frog Morton which had been allowed some air for a while. The Latakia again making its presence known, but quickly mellowing as some other flavors rose to the fore - spice, nuts, and obviously sweet VA. It smoked smooth, cool and fairly dry, leaving a crisp grey/white ash.

This is one of those blends you must try as it is described very nicely in the company's plug. It is well worth the bulk price.

Absolutely terrible. This tobacco came fresh from a trusted tobacconist. Gave it a chance. Aroma from the tin is very pleasant. Once lit taste and smell are no better than stale cigarettes.
