Through a combination of luck and perseverance I found a 4 ounce cutter-top tin of My Mixture # 73. It's possible the tin was from the mid 60s as the underside is stamped "4oz NET" over "TOBACCO" and it sold for $3.75.

The paper label was quite deteriorated and in addition to the illegible ink writing in the "My Mixture" designation there was an odd aniline ink scribble that I initially confused for a fancy "B." I had no idea what the contents of the tin were when I opened it.

Upon opening the tin at pipe club we were impressed by the initial, remarkably rich aroma of Latakia and the sweet-savory perfume of Cavendish. The contents were in remarkable condition, still-moist and springy. Underneath the cutaway lid the tobacco was veiled in a thin parchment paper stamped "F 12 U" the significance of which I am unsure. The cut was a finer ribbon, a mosaic of rich dark mahogany and black.

An unlit draw was sweet and malty with a smokey perfume. These were prominent on lighting the tobacco, always with a satisfying depth of flavor at each draw. There were no shallow spots, no dimension in which this tobacco failed to show stand firmly on two legs. The Virginia was rich and there was no grass or hay, although it's unclear whether this was due to extensive aging. The Orientals were salty-sweet and floral. A wisp of young leather braced the Orientals to the Latakia which had satisfying depth and an herbal, smokey nose. The Perique was fruity rather than acrimonious pepper, which again may have been due to some extent to aging. As the mixture evolves and airs in the jar the cloying honey sweetness subsides and the leather and herbal-woody profiles emerge to prominence.

Frankly the currently-available blend that most closely resembles My Mixture #73 is Ashton Artisan's Blend. Not coincidentally the ingredients are identical. If you enjoy this type of blend and have the opportunity to try My Mixture #73, do not pass it up. I have not doubt that if it were currently available it'd be a best seller.

The smoky, woody, earthy, wine-like, musty Syrian Latakia also has a mild floral incense quality as the lead component. It’s 52% of the blend. The earthy, woody, smoky, herbal, floral, mildly spicy, very sour, vegetative, fragrant Oriental is a hearty supporting player. The red Virginias and Virginia cavendish provide a fair amount of tangy dark fruit, earth, wood, some bread and vegetation, light tart and tangy citrus along with a few floral, grass, sugar and small spice notes in the third position. The stewed fruity (plums, raisins, and figs) perique has a few pinches of spice as a condiment. The strength and nic-hit just pass the medium mark. The taste is a couple of steps past that level. There’s no chance of bite or harshness, though it does sport a few rough edges. Burns cool and clean with a mostly consistent, deeply rich sweet and sour, floral, spicy, zesty campfire flavor that translates to the pleasantly lingering after taste. The room note is a notch stronger. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. Not quite an all day smoke, but it is repeatable if you can find it.

There is no way I can better describe this blend than the above reviewers absolute masterpiece. We differ only in the area of enjoyment - I would give this revved up version of Nightcap (heavier Latakia & Perique with Oriental added) a perfect 10 rating if I could.

A year or so ago, my pipe club ordered (From the Dunhill store in London) several blends not available stateside. They included #27, Baby's Bottom, White Spot and #73. The first two were adored. White Spot received, uh, spotty reviews. #73 was an absolute love affair!

Not available in the U.S. since around 1984 , this was a real latakia bomb .Back in the day , Dunhill was the prime supplier of really good tobacco . I'm talking about the 1960's when the menu of fine tobaccos was nowhere like it is today . This was a beautifully presented mixture with a tin note that knocked you over .The Virginias were high grade as was the real Syrian latakia . The moisture level was perfect and it created a burn that lasted the entire bowl . Smokers today can only dream of a tobacco like this . Dunhill had a full range of English blends but , as I remember , this one was not for the faint of heart .Only My Mixture #10 could come close to it for strength. I had stored cans of #73 and was able to smoke it up to the 1990's . You should only be so lucky to find a can on ebay for $500.

I got some of this from a friend who went to England and brought a tin back with him. Well, it is typical Dunhill of new.It is rather flat, heavy, and tar-a-plenty.It was a fuller and flatter version of Nightcap. Recently it has been my experience that all Dunhill tobacco products are slipping. This was no exception. If you removed the name DUNHILL one would say a bad house blend. Skip it!

When I received this, from a friend in the UK, I had a vision of a stronger 965. Now that I've had my fair share of this blend, my opinion differs, from my first impression. This blend say "big" all over it, 52% Latakia, of the Cyprian variety, and a multitude of Virginia's, with a Virginia based Cavendish? Let's not forget the Oriental's and a touch of Perique. Tobacco comes moist, as most from across the pond, so airing out, but not to much, will facilitate the loading process. Easy to load and the first charring light, is a breeze, initially, you taste the Latakia, but things start to settle down, and a virtual tour of varied tobacco's floats above your head, like some many clouds on a spring day. Not monochromatic in any sense, like some other's that tout the large Latakia percentage. The bowl get's interesting about half way down, as the Oriental/Turkish comes to the forefront, with support from the Perique, what a sensation, but just as you enjoy this melange, the Latakia/Virginia combo comes back and it's a dead heat to the finish. A refreshing tobacco, in that the Cavendish is there for support, and never comes out alone, as it does in 965. Burns clean to the bottom of the bowl, I tried it a group 5 and 4, without any cloying. Now if I could just get the price down to mirror the other Dunhill imports? Available only at the Dunhill(UK) store.

I am new to English Mixtures, but I think I am getting a bit addicted to them. Last week I tried McConnells' 100 percent Latakia and it was wonderful!! This is the big brother to Nightcap and this too, is absolutely wonderful!! 52 percent Latakia does the trick for me, it does not dominate the other leaf. It is well rounded and I like to smoke it late in the evening before bed. Yummy!!
