Tavern Tobacco Co. Boar's Head

(3.00)
Formerly KCC Matured Virginia: In the days when tobacco was the King crop in Virginia, many who visited the colonial capitol would stop by the tavern for food, drink, conversation and a pouch of the well-known house tobacco. Rumour has it that Mr. Jefferson himself was secretly fond of the occasional bowlful. A blend of matured Virginias loaded with flavor but smooth as angel's wings. Medium strength.

I usually like red Virginias in broken cake/flake form, and the unlit smell of this one was very promising: fruity, sweet/sour, somehow similar to some McClelland products.

It is certainly a quality tobacco, not too wet, nor too dry: it behaves well, doesn't burn the tongue, and produces very little moisture in your pipe.

The problem with me is that it is not only smooth, but also very delicate with flavour: the intense fruity smell does not completely translate into taste. It is good, but you are left wanting some more intensity, some more richness, a less monochromatic impression.

Nice stuff, but I prefer some of McClelland's similar offerings (or Tavern's own Thunder Road, much tastier).

Maybe a pinch of Perique would help?

Knox Cigar had (I believe) several really fine tobaccos in their Tavern Tobacco line-up, and Boar's head was one of them. Not at all like the original from decades ago that was a powerful Latakia. This one is actually a powerful Virginia with a wonderfully fermented smell in the tin and bold and semi-sweet flavor at the match. The first third of the bowl was Virginia tart and spicy, but then the smoke settled down and I captured a half hour zone of pure bliss. I might be wrong, but I think Knox Cigar misted this one with something extra.

I love this stuff. You can always tell when someone at the shop is smoking this because it smells wonderful. BE ADVISED: THE SMELL WILL CAUSE YOU TO BECOME HUNGRY FOR THIS TOBACCO. I have seen it happen many times and have also succumbed to its magical powers. Here is a brief encounter with Boars Head.

(Tim is seating on a stool in front of the pipe display case at the Knoxville Cigar Company in the Old City gently puffing away on Boars Head in a handsome Bjarne pipe.)

(Enter A Fellow Pipe Smoker)

Fellow Pipe Smoker: Hey buddy! How's it going?

Tim: Great just hanging out.

Fellow Pipe Smoker: that is some delicious smelling tobacco. What kind is it?

Tim: Boars Head.

(Fellow Pipe Smoker loads up and begins smoking delicious tobacco.) End Story.

However, the story has repeated itself many times and I have also been the one that has been captured by the smell. Wouldn't be incredible if you could smell what you were smoking.

It smells great, my taste buds love it and my tongue couldn't be happier.

Another of the recent additions by Knox Cigar to their Tavern Tobacco line, this blend of 5 different VAs from golden to dark brown is a rubbed out flake and ready to load. The tin aroma has a hint of the vinegar common to many of McClelland's VAs. The lighting is easy and the smoke is cool, without bite and uniform regardless of bowl size. Although acceptable and sweet, the taste does not develop thruout the smoke. In my view, this tinned product is no better than several of McClelland's 2000 series that are readily available in bulk @ a much lower unit cost.

Boar's Head has a strong scent both in the tin and when smoked. It is a matured Virginia blend, reminiscent of both Hal o' the Wynd and Haddo's Delight, with the spiciness found in Haddo's. I would swear there is perique in it due to the peppery flavour it produces. Overall, the blend is smooth, consistent, and full.
