I usually smoke stronger blends than Bayou Morning, but this blend has completely won me over. The first half of the bowl makes me feel like I'm licking on a cool stick of butter, make that butter with a splash of citrus and a dash of pepper. It's light and refreshing at the light and builds in strength and flavor all the way down. To my tastes, it balances the flavors of the virginias and perique perfectly. My only problem with this one is that I have a hard time doing something else while I'm smoking it. I constantly stop and say, "Damn, that's good!" It annoys my wife tremendously.
As an aside, I cracked a jar recently that I put away from my first pound over a year ago. It was fantastic. I can't wait to see what 5 years away from oxygen does for this blend.

The earthy, woody red Virginia adds a sharp, tangy dark fruit sweetness and is well complimented by the earthy, woody, darker fruit quality of the brown Virginias. The lemony, grassy, tart and tangy, citrusy, lightly floral and acidic, brighter Virginia is more of a condiment in terms of effect. The perique is strongly peppery, plumy and a little figgy in taste, and dominates the proceedings. There are no toppings, which allows the natural flavors of the varietals to shine. The strength is a step or two short of the strong level, while the taste is a rung past that. The nic-hit is almost in the center of medium to strong. It burns cool and clean at a reasonable pace and dry, and smokes with some ease, though at times it has a mild harsh and dull spot or two in addition to a little sour hit from the perique. It won't bite, but it will tingle your tongue. It requires few relights, though I recommend a moderate smoking cadence. Leaves almost no moisture in the bowl. The lingering after taste is spicy sweet. Designed for those who want the high perique content, and if you do, this is an easy three or four star blend. I rate it at two and a half stars because of the occasional harsh spots, mostly after the half way point as the blend picks up some strength.

I love this stuff. A VaPer with a serious attitude, this stuff is not for the uninitiated. Red Virginias, black Virginias, and a healthy dose of Perique, Bayou Morning has flavor that you will taste for a half hour after you smoke it. Now, for certain, this is one of the smoothest and possibly one of the creamiest pipe tobaccos out there. It burns well, has loads of flavor, and has a wonderful mouth-feel. I almost feel like I can chew it sometimes, crazy as that sounds. If you're looking for refinement, this ain't it. However, if you like Perique (and you're gonna have to to like this), and are a fan of VaPers, this is the old, crotchety granddaddy of them all.

What names come to mind when you think of American blenders that do an incredible job of creating memorable Vapers? McClellands? Absolutely! Russ Ouelette? Oh, yeah! Well, add C&D to that list! This is an absolutely delicious Vaper that comes on strong at the match, settles down almost immediately and smokes so well that it's near-impossible to multi-task while smoking it. It demands and holds my attention throughout the bowl. I can't recall a more congenial Vaper! As tasty as this is, it's not overpowering with perique, even though it appears to have a healthy dose of it. It takes real talent to give a Vaper a good dose of perique without it stealing the show. Bob Runowski has done it!
This has probably the weirdest cut of any Vaper I've ever seen. It has cubes and chops and ribbons and all kinds of craziness. I'm not sure what if anything that does to the flavor, but I'm not complaining... just an observation. If you're a Vaper fan, this has to be on your short list. I just finished a tin of C&D's Kajun Kake and thought they couldn't outdo it. They did with this one!

I really like a good VaPer and with so many good reviews of C&D’s Bayou Morning I was looking forward to taking BM for a spin. Sadly, BM was a bit of a disappointment for me. It is a little rough around the edges and not as refined as other VaPers that I prefer. But in the interest of full disclosure, I tend to gravitate toward flakes rather than VaPers made with a ribbon cut, although I do enjoy Telegraph Hill. The dose of Perique in BM is forward and stays that way throughout the smoke. I generally don’t mind a good dose of Perique, but this blend just didn’t work for me. I tend to like a little more sweet with my Perique and that’s where I found BM lacking. I found the Perique overtaking the Virginias. On the plus side, BM does have a nice little kick to it. I am going to age some of this as I think that some time in the cellar may bring Bayou Morning closer to my wheelhouse.

Mr. Runowski produced a fine combination here. It is a true Va/Per blend that carries some strength and peppery semi-sweet taste sensations as the smoke progresses. Not a great deal of flavor variation, but this combination works well and I imagine those who enjoy Va/Per blends with some backbone will enjoy this one.

Every Bob Runowski blend I have smoked has a slight rough edge. This is a feature of his blending genius I think. Bayou morning is no different. You know you are smoking tobacco, and there is just something about it that that satisfies.
Pouch note is dried fruit and a little earthiness. The tobacco came at an excellent level of hydration. It seems to be roughly equal parts black, brown and tan mostly short medium ribbon. To keep you guessing, there are a few hunks of short wider ribbon in there too.
Smoked, it has the tart fruit of a good red Virginia as a base. The edginess is with the perique. It it peppery and adds some plum. There is a lot of it, and when puffed you get a slightly sour taste with a perique tingle. It really works and there is just a lot of VaPer flavor in there.
This is easy to recommend for fans of VaPers. You have to want a heaping serving of perique, and you can't be expecting the most refined of smoking experiences. It punches a lot of my buttons. I have not yet bought a pound of this but I will. It is a solid 3.5 on the scale.
This will not be for everyone, but it is very good.

Since this is my first tobacco review on this website, I'll start with a little background. I never liked aromatic tobaccos as I could never taste anything other than chemicals, so I naturally thought I'd be an English smoker. After trying countless English blends and experiencing varying degrees of disappointment, I discovered Virginia and Virginia/Perique tobaccos. Bayou Morning is my first step into the world of Va's and Va/Pers.
Now for my thoughts on this delightful tobacco. Cornell and Diehl's Bayou Morning is the first tobacco I've ever loved. I ordered an ounce on a whim, and seeing as most of that is now gone I plan on ordering more.
Upon first whiff of the aroma from the bag, my senses were confused by a strange smell I had never encountered before. I have a hard time describing it, but I find it delightful. The first time I lit a bowl of Bayou Morning, I experienced the delicious sweetness of the Virginia tobacco. (I had previously had a hard time tasting anything from English blends, even with stronger blends such as Night Cap) I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of flavor immediately apparent in BM. The smoke has a creamy texture, and despite what a few reviewers have said, burns relatively cool unless puffed on like a madman. As I worked my way through this tobacco, I became enamored of its sweetness and the subtle tasty spice of the perique. This blend is (in my six months of pipe smoking) Nirvana in a pipe. It has become the blend that I actually look forward to and get excited about smoking. So much so that I haven't touched any of my many English blends since I fell in love with this one. I highly recomming this tobacco to anyone and everyone. If someone has never tried a Va/Per tobacco before, there's a good chance they'll be pleasantly surprised. For someone who is a frequent smoker of these kinds of blends, they will be delighted by the wonderful experience provided by Bayou Morning. As to the amount of nicotine in this tobacco, it has just the right amount. Perfect for relaxing at the end of a hard day and not too much as to make someone nauseous. If you get a chance, you should absolutely try this.

Being a smoker of English/Latakia blends and heavily cased Burleys, I find this blend to be light and sweet, and refreshing!
From the outset it is sweet from the Virginias, and then there is the spice/ subtle bitterness from the Perique.
Enjoyable. As I progressed, the flavor becomes deeper and darker, but continues to be a light smoke for me, compared to the Latakia's and Burleys I'm used to.
I felt dizzy by the end of the bowl, from the nicotine. So I smoke this in my smaller pipes.
I like this tobacco. I'd recommend this to those who want to try a Va-Perique blend.

First, kudos on the new website -- very user friendly and well designed to maximize the usefulness of our collective input. (One more note, and I swear that no disrespect is meant to anyone -- I love that a number of us have seen the box for "age" (presumably of the tobacco being reviewed) and instinctively put our own ages. "Wow, this guy has stored his weed for 57 years!".) OK, Bayou Morning -- what a fantastic bulk VaPer. Stronger than the name would indicate, but smooth from top to bottom. Bright and toasted. No strange effects at all, just tobacco essence. What pleases me in particular is that, unlike all too many blends that augur good things to come during the first 1/4 of the bowl but fall not only flat but offensive later on, Bayou Morning ends as attractively as it began with just a bit more richness and kick that is to be expected from the bottom 1/3 (and to which I look forward). A reviewer recently wrote words to the effect that he just wants to (or indeed does) say aloud "Damn that's good stuff". Have at it brother. I'm doing it now, too, and it seems to amuse at least my Terrier. This site labels me a Venerator -- I like to write about things that are great, I guess (or those about which you should be warned). Well, the shoe fits. Highly recommended.

Cornell & Diehl - Bayou Morning.
For the mornings I always roll with a pungent Balkan/English or a heady VaPer and today the description of this seemed perfect. For me, a good VaPer can often be the better of the two, as sometimes a Balkan/English makes for an almost sluggish start to the day.
The pouch was perfectly hydrated, making for a speedy start. The ribbons are of a slight build, all the same size, with the inclusion of no coarse/unsmokeable pieces. I'd never do a review based on just a few puffs, but wanted to after charring this earlier today, it's blooming delicious! The Perique tastes so good: pepper, spice, and all things nice! This easily outweighs the Virginia, especially for the final quarter of a bowl. The Va also tastes good, but it's nowhere near as loud. I get no underlying nuances of any extra taste, it's a proper and pure tasting VaPer. The burn may be viewed by a few folks as being a downside: it can be a bit fast, but seeing as I think this is good for the mornings that might not be so bad if you're in a rush! A point about the burn I don't think will be found disagreeable by anyone is the temperature: it's mostly cool and doesn't go much higher.
The nicotine's easily above medium, and if I'm honest I quite like the room-note.
Bayou Morning? Fabulous.
Four stars, the final quarter of a bowl deserves five!

As I'm a fan of the 'Vaper with some backbone' style, I thought this might be good to try. I was right. Relying on the sound reviews of several pipers that I respect for their taste preferences, I ordered 8 ounces. There will be a reorder of 2 pounds in the very near future as this will make frequent appearances in my rotation.
The blend comes as a course and uneven cut that is suprisingly easy to pack. The lighting is easy as well. Just a hair more moisture than I prefer for smoking, but that is easily rectified with a little airtime. I like the fact that C&D doesn't drench their tobaccos with distilled water prior to packing.
The flavor of the first bowl was not what I was expecting. A little too much Perique and too little Virginia. That was from a freshly delivered bag of the bulk. I had made my first mistake. I jarred up the tobacco and filled a half pint jar to sample after some air had been introduced, over a week or so, a little at a time. What a difference! I cannot express this strongly enough. If you are a wine drinker, you will understand. Letting a freshly opened tin or bulk delivery breathe and settle for a week or two in the jar is vital to getting a true impression of the flavors.
After the requisite time in jar, I tried this again and was delighted to find that Bayou Morning is a very nice Vaper with a full flavor profile and a medium dose of nicotine. Just what I like. The flavors are not sweet or sour, but a very balanced mix of both. It weaves in and out of both sweet and sour throughout the bowl, and as you progress, the taste and power gets more full.
The earthy, rich, deep and tangy nose is translated directly into the flavor. Strong black coffee, bittersweet chocolate, preserved dark fruits. DGT on this is sublime. If you have never understood the magic of DGT, this is the tobacco to try it with again. It changes the character completely and becomes more full and rich. The Red Virginia comes out to play, and the Perique finds a softer place just behind the Va.
I believe that for the money, you cannot find a more satisfying Vaper than this. It is pure middle of the road without being whimpy. An accomplishment in itself! Mr Runowski demonstrates what genius he possesses with a simple blend like this one. The complexity is there, but must be drawn out with sips and a little attention.
Bayou Morning is a must buy for all vaper lovers. Simple, satisfying, low fuss, high quality and inexpensive as compared to like blends from other labels.
Cheers!

Cornell & Diehl Bayou Morning.
A friendly, dependable workhorse of a Va/Per!
Touts a jarnote somewhat reminiscent of wine, and a not bland but neither stunningly complex, consistently good virginia taste with solid perique back up.
In a crowded genre of contenders that ranges from memorably retched to remarkably crave-inspiring, this beauty of a va/per has got it going on: quality tobaccos, enough flavor to keep it interesting, enough vitamin n to satisfy, not too sweet, not too spicy, bulk availability and a price point that doesn't bust the wallet. Nothing artificial. The nationalist in me likes that it's American made. You'd have to be working at it to make it bite. I could possibly see it as being a little to the strong side for someone with a lower nicotine tolerance.
All things considered, Bayou Morning is what I'd call a home run.

Bayou Morning stands out amongst all the VaPers out there. The bright Virginias add a slight sweetness and some hay flavor. The red Virginia is earthy with some sugar. The Perique is BOLD and spicy with red pepper and a fermented fruit note. Not a complex blend and it won't change much throughout the bowl (it does get creamier at the end) but it is a rich & robust VaPer. For me it is an all day smoke but I need a massive breakfast first!

I noticed in the reviews that there wasn't a bunch of chatter on the tin note. It stinks! Something akin to bad feet or good cheese. Same can be said for the room note. My son asked me if I was lighting farts in my office with a Philly Blunt. The only thing worse in the tin is Chenet's Cake. Vile smelling. Now the flavor profile is another ball game indeed. Top rate leaf across the board. The Red Virginia's dominate the base flavor, with earthy rich dark flavor, a malty sweetness and a tough of grass, I assume from the bright VA's. The Perique is spicy! White pepper, almost a basil like character, followed by a dark fruitiness like a baked plum (at least that is what I imagine a baked plum would taste like). Retrohale if you dare, the tingle is pretty strong. I actually get a bit of tongue tingle from this and an itchy throat. The finish on this smoke is not only quite good, it lasts for quite awhile. I only smoked one bowl in a small clay pipe to get a sense of the flavors before only smoking it in my filtered pipes. This has a pretty high nicotine content and I am a wimp with nicotine. If I put this in a group 3 pipe with no filter I'd have been as green as my lawn. Savinelli's made this sing and not KO me. Lot's of rich smoke to boot. Bravo C&D!

After smoking several C&D blends i realized that they process the virginias in a unique way that no other manufactuer does and either you love thet either you hate them.one i opened the can this familiar smell of aged cheese and spices came out.the moisture is perfect and the fine ribbon cut allows a nice packing and an easy lighting with a few relights needed.while smoking you realize that this is no typical Va/per due to the different virginias C&D offers.the flavours are natural spicy and sharp.citruses, dark fruits, earthy and sour notes are mosty coming out accompanied from some sweet spices and figs.nice combination for a different smoking experience blend with medium nicotine and no chance of tongue bite.burns medium speed and medium hot.the aftertaste is sweet with sour notes.the room note is tolerant.some moisture is being created during the smoking process.generally this one is an all day smoke despite the high perique content.the only negative is that due to high perique content the flavours are more on the virginia side.a worthy trying blend for the perique lovers.

Opposed to the flake version the ribbon-cut is more of a earthy, dry smoke, whilst the flake is full-strength, full-bodied "big brother" to the ribbon version.
What I like about the Ribbon is the delicate earthiness, paired with mild sweetness and smooth notes of figs, plums and pepper. What I prefer about the flake is its more prominent peppery, fruity and full-bodied aroma. All in all both are excellent Va/Pers, yet I prefer the flake cut, not a moment of hestitation to say so! So this'll be 3-stars for me and the flake takes the crown! ;-)
One of the best Va/Pers out there for me (both the ribbon and flake version), as they are stout, full-bodied, and rich in flavors and - most important - not as overly sweet as most Va/Pers are!

A damn good smoke. As with most c&d offerings, this blends "flaws" are also the source of it's charm. It is a wholly unflavored, young tasting and rough around the edges smoke. It certainly lacks the refinement and age and civility that mark a truly magnificent smoke to me. But here's the thing, im not always looking for revelation from my pipe. In fact, i rarely am. I don't often the time to savor and appreciate a bowl to the exclusion of other things. I most often want something of quality that tastes pleasant, delivers a sufficient dose of nicotine, and leaves me feeling I've just enjoyed tobacco that was grown, harvested, and blended by men who are good at what they do and care about doing it. Bayou Morning is that, in spades. The perique is strong, but is in no way overwhelming, and is of the tart, plummy variety. The va provide a pleasant overall character of hay and sweet grass. Honestly, the va content here is not so distinguished or classy as i typically like. But the blend as a whole works exceedingly well. There is enough depth to keep it interesting and the creaminess and overall flavor deliver something lovely. Not necessarily suited to most vaper fans, but ones who like some roughness will apprecoate it. Easy to recommend.

This is literally the only "VaPer" I smoke. I've tried OGS and St. James Woods, Sixpence...all hot air. Bayou Morning has enough perique nose tickle to make it a great first bowl of the day, but not the heaviness of a burley based or latakia tinged smoke. It is especially tasty in a cob, I find.

The flake version of bayou morning is VERY different from the ribbon. Totally different vapers, so dont assume one is like the other -- at all!
The ribbon has big hay, grass, and red pepper spices. Its raw, clear as day, clean sharp flavors. The perique comes through so spicy it's almost tobasco sauce hot, particularly prior to some jar time. It can get some sweetness but requires a year or so in the tin to get there, and even then it's not an overwhelming sweetness.
The flake is much more rounded, creamier, sweeter, and richer. The grassy/hay flavors are reduced in favor of a buttery richness. The sweetness is bolder and comes out stronger. The spiciness is not as intense and is plummier, although it's still spicier than escudo.
Both are excellent vapers, both unique and special, but for very different reasons and moods. I have never found a vaper with the raw hot pepper spice of the ribbon (think elizabethan with a kick), and have found very few with the rich every day smoking potential of the flake (similar to cabbies mixture or aged escudo). Both will stay in large quantities in my cellar.

This is a perique forward blend. It will start at the front and stay there all the way. It is spicy, a little sweet with plumb and fig notes and I do get an occasional note of oak here and there too. The VA's are bold enough to stay up with the perique. The reds are tangy with dark fruit notes and sweet. The browns are earthy and have a bread like sweetness about them with a note of roasted grain. Although the notes say there is bright in here and I do see them, the grassy note is way, way in the background and I get no citrus note at all. The mouth feel is a little rough around the edges, it is not a smooth smoke but I doubt that smooth was what C&D were looking for with this one. While rough, it does not bite but it will get harsh if pushed. I place that at a 3.5 stars. For those looking for a perique forward va/per that does not completely overpower the VA's this one is a must try. Personally, the perique is a little too forward for me but it may merit further investigation later down the road.

25 per cent perique sounds like a lot, and I was half-expecting this to be too strong and sour for my taste. So I was surprised that the virginias are so prominent. More of the earthy and fruity kind rather than the grassy and citrusy, they really give a lot of virginian goodness and complexity. The perique comes forth after a while, peppery and with dark notes of dried fruit, but the blend is always in good balance. A few relights might be necessary, and you really should not be in a hurry when you smoke this. Leaves nothing but grey ash.

Creamy with kick. This makes my head sweat.
I really like the sweet tobacco smell from the tin. Also, it just looks like high grade fresh tobacco. If fresh can be a descriptive term for tobacco, I'd use it here. It looks and smells fresh and high grade out of the tin.
As for the smoke. It's a lot of pepper. The smoke has a full texture I've heard reviewed as creamy or buttery, which I'd agree with. I taste the nice bright and sweet Virginia, but its enveloped in a peppery kick.
I've smoked Elizabethan and Dunhill Navy roll which to me is like just a pinch or two of pepper on my scrambled eggs in the morning. It's there, but just as a tad as a bit of flavoring. This would be more like a good dousing with some Tobasco maybe. So, if you are like me and have grown up with spicy Mexican food and Cajun cuisine, you may just love Tobasco on your eggs and that is how you like it.
Sensitivity to spice is very subjective. I like my Virginia doused in some kick, so this works for me. That's how I perceive this baccy. If you are sensitive to kick though, you might miss the Virginia flavoring altogether though. Depends on your palette. May want to try before you buy. I'm giving it a high rating because if I'm going to smoke a vaper this is it, but vaper's really are just something I want every now and again as an english/latakia lover.
Edit update: This has become my summer morning go to. Perfect way to start the day with a great cup of joe.

Cornell & Diehl Bayou Morning is a blend that I wanted to try because it is unflavored and it has Perique. Not to mention, I like Cornell & Diehl blends in general. It has a varied appearance with some reddish brown, light brown, and light tan leaf. The cut is random, with some rough cut evident. It is drier than most blends that I have seen, but it is just right for smoking out of the bag. It packs fairly easily, with some shoving necessary as some of the leaf pieces are big enough to confound the process. It lights very easily with some upward heaving of the tobacco upon the initial lighting. Thereafter tamping, it burns well at the moisture level I had. Perique is in abundant measure in this blend and it dominates the flavor of the smoke but does not block out the Virginias. This blend is of medium-strong nicotine strength with a generous intensity of flavor. There is not much in the way of depth or complexity, nor is there much of a balance of flavors. This is a Perique showcase blend and there is pleasant spice to be found for Perique lovers. The high point of the bowl in the middle "half". It burns relatively cool, unless you are smoking it in an old-fashioned clay cutty and you puff a little too much too fast. In briars and cobs, my smoking experience with this blend was pleasantly cool and dry. I smoked it in an Orlik (Captain Black) billiard, a Sunrise Canadian, a MM Country Gentleman and in an old-fashioned clay. If you are not a lover of Perique, it is best to avoid this tobacco blend.

This is a great blend of Perique and Va if you are a VaPer smoker. However, of all the VaPers in my bacca stash this one has a good amount of Perique and I wouldn't recommend it to a piper looking to try out their first VaPer blend. Also, it took some different pipe smoking experiments to find the right pipe to smoke Bayou Morning. The perfect match to me was my Peterson 312.
I will say that a thiner holed pipe works best for this blend and really helps it as a wider mouth tunnel can really strengthen and bring out the Perique. Bayou Morning is a tasty blend with my coffee in the morning.

Before I get into this blend, let me explain the issues I've had with a few C&D blends as if late. Mold, that's right mold. It happened with Burley flake #1 and although I couldn't visually see it the odor was there and it ghosted one of my pipes. It took a few good cleanings to get that out of the pipe but eventually it went away. Of course Smoking Pipes stood good for it as they are a top notch company to deal with. Now onto Bayou Morning. After opening the tin it had the same mold smell as the Burley Flake #1 so I let it air for a while. After a day or so it seemed to lessen some so I loaded up after a mild rub out and some dry time. What I mostly got was Perique with little if any Virginia? I again tried in various pipes and bowl sizes but the same results Perique. I like Perique when used as a condiment, but that was all I got ,the spice of the Perique and nothing more? If you like Perique you may love this. I personally have nothing against Cornell & Diehl however, have they gotten so big that they may be rushing things to fill orders? Are they using water as moisturizer to keep their tobacco moist? And since their tins aren't vacuum sealed is it allowing mold to ferment in the tins during storage? I think I'll stick to bulk ordering with them from now on. Just my two cents.

I am starting to get a hunch that deep within Cornell & Diehl’s (C&D) Carolina-based blending kitchen, some exuberant soul has a compellingly strong penchant for the taste of Louisiana Perique. Consider your Old Joe Krantz and Haunted Bookshop, for instance, as they do exemplify the base argument that I am about make here. Where there is smoke there is fire as the saying goes.
Let’s face it, if left unchecked, Perique is one of those strains that can easily dominate within a mixed profile, declaring its flamboyant self with such total disregard to modesty or gentility towards one’s upper anatomy. If this statement does not ring true, then please drop some pure Perique into your favorite briar for a simple tasting excursion. One, it’s a fantastic practice to accurately sensitize your palate to the native nuances of Perique flavor, but more importantly, you’ll come to understand or rather feel my point of view; that much I guarantee. Look at it this way, bare naked Louisiana Perique is about as silky and tender as Tennessee White Lightening; get my point?
Using this varietal as an essential complementary element, most head tobacco chefs tend to season their soups with about 2-5% Perique on par, as a rule of thumb. Understanding and tethering the subtilties of the proper Perique let-down ratio, respective to all other mixture constituents, is critical to achieving a desirable fusion of lively taste and original impressions of a blend’s design. The act of de-scalping an unsuspecting pipe smoker via Acadian annihilation is no way to make friends nor secure repetitive sales I dare say.
Now I don’t believe that the good folks at Cornell & Diehl are unwise or misinformed by any means. However, I must intentionally ask what’s up with this Bayou Morning? Essentially here comes yet another striking C&D concoction, all be it a VaPer, that largely features the infamous crop hailing from down Saint James Parish way. Rolling from the backwoods bay, Bayou Morning’s hoodoo hosts an impressive 25% Perique content. One can only conclude that the degree of Perique zeal on C&D’s part is a decisive measure designed to achieve a specific effect. Having now finished a fourth bowl, I can attest to the fact that, yes, it does do that quite effectively.
Initially when I pulled out the tightly rolled bag of tobacco, I assumed a mistake had been made. Namely the volume contained looked too plentiful for a mere ounce. Setting it to a scale, I stood corrected as it weighed true to what I had ordered. For a one-ounce sample pack, the amount of product supplied delighted me to no end.
Opening the baggie, the reason for this observation became clear to me. Chiefly, Bayou Morning is dense and plentiful in mass. Nested within was a drawing matte of red-brown-golden-copper fluff righteously peppered with generous seedy black tufts of haughty Perique. A thick and chewy mix of toothy Red and Bright ribbon and coarse inky grit. Some proclaim this blend is marginalized in appearance, I say have your eyes checked. Bayou Morning’s expression is serious without doubt but charming and most inviting in truth. Additionally, the moisture is quite ideal for a straightforward drop and burn, so there you have it.
Coming across with well-defined character, the pouch note commands a substantial air of deliciously tart woody Red Virginia. A knuckled punch of stinging dark fruity zest quickly lands from the Perique making a cheeky introduction as a passive smattering of Bright grassy tang and raisins float in the shadows. Interestingly there is such an acerbic oily overtone to the whole fragrance that it manifests in an almost balsamic flair. With that I quickly surmised this one would be, let’s say, a memorable emprise.
One could make the argument that Bayou Morning epitomizes an unusually vibrant Perique forward blend. With first light, the immediacy of the blend’s eternal contest surfaces as the Red and Perique tussle for eminent domain. This interesting clash stands consistently for the entire smoke with the Perique moving boldly to the forefront more than not. In general, the essential taste profile conveys as a deeply peppered earthy wood.
Characteristic of the Red Virginia, the registration forms with a charred and smoky woodiness that is brawny while being accented by streams of stewed tea. The Bright is extremely docile within the complex, functioning as a distant tertiary complement that inspires the image of a citrusy-lemon meadow. Quaint highlights of subtle floral and hushed brown sugar are tendered atop the lessened grassy note as well. And for the Perique, being fully protrusive, a funky resonance of musty prune overtones melds richly with the assertive belt of steamy pepperiness; impactfully sharp and bald.
As the smoking duration progressed, the resoluteness of the flavor proceeds to become darker, deeper, and stronger. Towards the end of the bowl the gusto is so powerful and full that the taste impression is profoundly different than that of the top 2/3; much bolder. With an aftertaste marked by intense wooded tarty spice, the entire palate dances with excitement and the sinus cavity vibrates with active stimulation.
Moreover, the nicotine effect demonstrated is of the medium-strong potency. My face became fully flushed, and a mild case of the jitters smartly set in with the blend’s encounter. As such, I would not suggest that this VaPer should be construed as a simple all-day smoke. There is most definitely tooth here, and one does genuinely feel it’s residual influence.
Although the tobacco burns evenly, I do feel that it has a propensity to get a little warm at times, yet it did not bite whatsoever. Therefore, I recommend deploying the breathing method to avoid the escalation of heat and to stave off a bit of rambunctiousness that occasionally attempts to harsh the favorable savor. Additionally, burning the mix through a cob produced a significantly mellower experience and the smoke texture itself tended to be creamier to the extent of being conventionally smooth.
Producing a concentrated plume of immoderate smoke, Bayou Morning leaves an opaque rendering of spent essence. A forceful and sustained aroma of soured, spicy, blackened hardwood engulfs the room masking no delusions regarding the blend’s inherent vitality and strength. Bayou Morning’s fragranced intensity may not be a welcomed companion to the sensitive type.
So, what are my final thoughts on this blend? Personally, I truly liked the experience which is kind of surprising. Generally, I am a Perique conservative by nature. Perhaps this expansion of my boundary of tolerance signifies a re-culturing of the palate? In practical terms, the price tag on Bayou Morning is significantly more attractive than my treasured Escudo. What is more this flavorful mix is available in a bulk, making Bayou Morning’s heightened curb appeal undeniable. And once again, a lot of dense tobacco for the money.
Finally, I think it’s fair to say that this simple, yet exhilarating, Bayou Morning recipe is well-crafted to deliver on a grand scale. Clearly C&D’s objective was to develop a bold and distinctive VaPer, that surpassed a mere “me too” product offering. Based upon my assessment, their achieved results are quite commendable and successful on that endeavor. Furthermore, Bayou Morning counters beautifully on all the standard genre attributes and presents a strong game against competing VaPer mixtures. If you take nothing else away from my babble, plainly, this blend shines brightly in Perique lover bliss. Drop a bowl and see if that colorful and unique Bayou spirit grabs you as it did for me.

This review is for the bulk version, if that makes a difference. The name is a little misleading for me. When I see "morning" I think of a light-medium blend and waking to sunlight peeking through the window (at the crack of noon in my case). This is more like being wakened by the sound of a big metal spoon being slammed around in a steel pot. It's not as sweet as other Va/Pers I've smoked, and the peppery perique is dominant. The Virginias are just enough to smooth it out a little, but there's a slight bite. The smoke is creamy and buttery. There's a fair amount of nicotine...I'm smoking it now before eating breakfast, and I had to set the pipe down before things went south. Overall a very good blend, but it's not the smoothest Va/Per out there. You'll like Bayou Morning if you enjoy the kick of "rustic" blends as opposed to the more refined character of something like Dunhill Elizabethan.

If you're a Va/Per fan, you owe it to yourself to at least give this a try.
I'm not a man of many words, a poet, or anything else of the like. So, I'll try to keep this short and easy to read.
This Tobacco has a very pleasant tin note - full, but not offensive or overwhelming. It's a bit on the dry side - not quite crisp, but not overly moist. It makes for easy packing in the bowl. After a charing light, it burns easily, with just a relight or two along the way. After finishing the bowl, there was no dottle - just fine white ash.
It starts out very peppery - the perique takes center stage. It's a very full, rich smoke. Not an oily full like you would expect from, say, Dunhill's Nightcap . . . but full and rich nonetheless. As the bowl smokes down, the perique stays in the smoke, but starts to mellow out. The flavor remains full and delicious until the end.
I'm sure I could liken it to some musical piece, or multi-course meal. But, I'll just say that after the bowl is finished, I enjoy smoking another one!

I am a lover of perique and smoke a lot of vapers. I bought this five years ago when I was trying new vaper blends as it recieved excellent reviews. When I first lit a bowl, I found it to be very green and harsh and not really enjoyable at all. I love strong perique blends, I am a big fan of Frenchy's SunzaBitches. But to me this blend was like lighting up a strong harsh cigar. I thought at the time that I would put it up for a few years and let it age. Hopefully it would age and become more mellow. It is five years later now, and it is still harsh, in your face strong, and like smoking a harsh strong cigar. I like the perique flavor but the va tobaccos here add very little to the blend, none of the sweetness of other vaper blends.
This blend has a nice musty pouch note and the tobacco is a ribbon cut running through the shades of brown from like khaki up to a dark brown. Being a C and D blend, is has a nice drier moisture content, packs easily, and lights up and burns steady all the way down leaving a steely grey ash. I does smoke dry and all the way down with little dottle in the bottom of the bowl. I do enjoy the perique flavor, but it lacks the sweetness of good vaper blends. The room note is tolerable, but will not make friends.
There are many fans of this blend. It is just not for me. It is worth a try but there are in my opinion, much better vaper blends out there.

Note: this review applies to the ribbon-cut version. I will post my impression of the flake version once I finish my current tin. It is a comforting thing to find an "all-day" blend, especially as one who's tastes tend to run towards extremes. Although Chenet's Cake is my holy grail of VaPers, this is just a hair below it for quality. The fact that it is available in bulk is a godsend, as I smoke it by the fistful. Be it known, this is not a gentle, laid-back smoke that one can simply let fall into the background. It is spicy, it is complex, and it WILL NOT BE IGNORED. However, if you smoke heavy blends on a regular basis, this could become your best friend. As far as flavor, this falls to the drier side of VaPers; with the right pipe, the right cadence, and the right celestial alignment, you may get the odd sweet note. More commonly, it is buttery, toasty, grassy, and black-pepper spicy, with back beats of lemon and orange peel. Moisture is perfect-to-slightly-dry; a more exacting soul may wish to rehydrate it slightly, but I find it smokes perfectly as-is. Burns a touch fast, but still cool and biteless. Room note isn't the best, but far from noxious. Typical VaPer, I guess. This falls to the milder end of my favored blends, which makes it a solid medium-body to most pipers. Pairs well with UNSWEETENED iced tea, rye whiskey, or IPAs. In summary, a faithful companion to the grizzled and the mad. Everyone needs a friend. Update 09/20/21. Not much to add to the above; I don't think a day goes by that I don't smoke at least one bowl of BM. I juiced my remaining supply with an additional 25% (by weight) of C&D's long cut Perique, for just a bit more oomph; considering that makes it 50% Perique, actually quite a bit of oomph. However, it works with Bayou Night... Surprisingly, the original character of it does not get lost. It does add deeper bass notes and a "Baker's Chocolate" note without searing my calloused sinuses. Try it if you want. It's fantastic in any form.

I was gifted a tin of this a few years back, and popped it open in October.
The tin nose is very sour, lots of perique, ticklish in the nostrils, and a bit fermented. The cut is very thin ribbons, mottled brown, mostly. Doesn't smell bad at all. Moisture was good, and no mold (ahem).
In the pipe, this is very perique-forward, as would be expected of a blend that is 1/4 composed of the stuff. Funnily, it's not too strong on the palate or exhaled out the nose. I rate the strength at a solid medium, and the taste is reasonably full. This lands squarely in 'serviceable' va/per territory.
Two caveats: Bayou Morning turns consistently ashy for me after the half-bowl mark, and it burns very quickly, like dry shag quickly. I could get over the speedy combustion, but the dirty taste is a deal killer. There are a multitude of better blends on offer, so I won't be revisiting this one.
Two stars and a shrug.

Perique is the hot sauce of tobacco. I love Perique, and I love hot sauce.
EDIT: Spent some more time with this one, and I’m upgrading a star. After sitting in a jar for a few months, it appears that the Perique wallop has dissipated to a point where I’m now enjoying things much more. Maybe a little extra time to meld was all this blend needed. These days, I’ve enjoyed the smoke, the Virginias are smooth as butter and the perique compliments in a BIG way.
It could also be that my recent love affair with Old Joe Krantz (oh, that sounds weird, eh?) has sensitized me a bit more to perique, I don’t know. What I do know is that Bayou Morning can be a wonderful and unique perique (I need a third word to rhyme) experience and I would recommend it to someone looking for a blend heavy in the Louisiana stuff.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: Continuing that analogy, I find Bayou Morning to be equivalent to a tablespoon of hot sauce on a saltine cracker—the monstrous amount of Perique just overwhelms the bright and red Virginias, masking their flavors and making this blend just a blast of Perique burn, and I found it to be unpleasant and even a bit uncomfortable to smoke at times.
Now, I’m a big fan of strong blends. Gimme lots of flavor, please, and enough nicotine to kill a moose. I’m also a big fan of hot sauce. But I like my hot sauce to add to the flavor, not as a main dish.
Maybe some age will mellow things out a bit, or allow the flavors to meld a bit. I’ll revisit this blend in a few months.

I smoked several pounds of this amazing blend about four years ago. It was so good that I chose it for just about every bowl of the day. Then I continued my adventures with other blends, focusing mostly on Gawith and Hoggarth or Samuel Gawith. It's hard to get Laleland tobbacos now, they are always sold out. So I returned to the C&D blends that for so many years been dependable.
Working my way through my first pound of Bayou Morning in after years without it, I am remembering why I was so crazy about it. I have smoked a lot of different vapers. and this is by far the greatest. It's got sweetness of just the right kind, creamy and smooth. The whispers of fruity tartness are just enough to keep the palette fresh, without getting overwhelmed by the sugars. You would expect a lot of pepper with such a heavy proportion of perique, but it's very subtle. The scent of the pouch is kind of like an earthy red wine. I don't know if any alcohol is generated by the fermentation of the perique but it almost seems like it is present in the aroma. Pure tobacco goodness with notes of fruit and wine cask.
The nicotine level must be pretty stout, since I am content to sip the smoke slowly. I have the nicotine tolerance of an elephant, and I like its effects, so I smoke weaker tobacco too fast. This stuff is easy to smoke slowly, so it stays cool and sweet.
I enjoy it the most in a smooth Peterson 302. For some reason it is just wonderful to let the pipe hang in my mouth as I work, slowly enjoying the unique sweetness of this amazing tobacco.
I should probably save this stuff for smoking just a few times a week, so I that I don't get pallette fatigue and lose the ability to really appreciate this fine tobacco.
I am told that the room note is like gunpowder tea with hints of fig.

Bulk purchase. My bags have all arrived dry and ready to smoke. The cut is springy so packing needs to be done carefully. Once packed, it lights well and requires very few relights pending it was packed well. Bag aromas of tangy red Virginia and spicy perique. The aromas are great. First flavours detected are the red Virginia tangs and some deep dark fruit from the perique. The perique is very spicy on the retrohale. There are some rough spots as mentioned by other reviews, but they smooth out with some jar time. Vitamin N is noticeable, I would say approaching medium strength. Overall this is one of my top vapers. For some it can be an all day smoke, just go slow as it can bite.

Cornell & Diehl's Bayou Morning is a perique lovers dream tobacco. While it's red and bright Virginias are deliciously sweet and tangy (they remind me of McClelland Red Cake), the high quality perique steals the show. It is rich with raisin and plum flavors and just enough spiciness to keep things interesting. The room note is also quite pleasant.
The cut is something between thick ribbons and cubes, which makes it easy to pack, light and keep lit. Some other reviewers mention harshness or sourness. I detect none of that and suspect that some may be confusing an abundance of flavor with harshness. Be warned, however, that this blend is a nicotine bomb, so smoke on a full stomach with a cup of strong coffee and take it slow. You will be rewarded with one memorable smoke.

First review but this stuff is so good I had to chime in. This has quickly become my everyday smoke. (Bought a pound) It’s a mixture of both sweet and spicy. There is, I think, 25% perique in this blend and the cut is fairly fine. Because the perique is so high it seems like on occasion you run into pockets of spice where you’re getting more perique than at other parts of the bowl. The same is true for the Virginia. Some might not like this inconsistency but I love it. It makes each bowl an adventure and I like the variety it provides in a single bowl. And when they both hit at the same time....wow.
This is one that also seems to better as the bowl ends. I am disappointed each time I finish a bowl and often find myself loading up another. I often smoke it without eating anything and while I am fairly NIC tolerant it does pack a punch especially at the end.

This one really won me over with time. I didn't think too much of my first tin but I was intrigued enough to buy some more in bulk form. This is a major player in the VaPer scene and it's gaining popularity for good reason. I hear some say that C&D do not have high grade VA's but I think this blend in of itself disproves that theory. The VA's are full of depth and richness, full flavored and absolutely satisfy my VA cravings. The perique used (%25) adds a whole other dimension to this blend that really takes it up a notch compared to the majority of the VaPers that are on the market today. If you are sensitive to Perique, please stay far away from this blend, Those of you who enjoy it and can't seem to get enough of it, look no further as this will definitely satisfy. An all day smoke in my book and the nicotine satiates my cravings and I constantly need nicotine flowing through these veins.
Essential.
Edit* 4-14-18. This stuff just gets phenomenal with a bit of age on it! Everytime I smoke, I ask myself why I don’t have at least 20 pounds of it in my cellar... well, I’m working on it. This last smoke just totally blew my mind and this jar only has a year and a half of age on it, imagine what 5 to 10 years will do? The fermentation of VA’s really reveals itself in the smoke.

i recently bought this because i started really liker Vapers. the taste is very very nice, burns great and love the room note. BUT damn the perique is spicy, i like spicy stuff but this is abit too much. if you smoke it with a filter, its very very enjoyable. i'm gonna let this blend age abit and then try it again without filter. i would really recommend this with a filter or to spicy stuff lover.
19/1/2015 i have let this blend age a bit. and good god it's delicious. the over spicy(peppery fleeing) died down and now gives a really nice musty(fermented) cool smoke. very enjoyable. if i had to compare between MCClelland 2015: virginia+perique and this blend. i would choose bayou morning. i find taste the perique taste far stronger/better and the price difference is great.

What a great tobacco this is! There is a slight sweetness of stoved Virginia with just the right amount of Perique. Wow! This is one of my favorites! It seems to do everything just right. It lights and burns well all the way down the bowl - never bites. It has a very nice but mild complexity to it and is always smooth and smokes cool. I can't seem to smoke this one too much. One word of caution. Keep this bag of tobacco away from your cat. One of ours went crazy over the bag and would not leave it alone. She insisted on rubbing and laying on it! The bag had to be placed in a closet to keep it away from her. I must say that I do not detect any catnip! Mr. Tarler of C&D says he has not experienced this dilemma at his shop. Highly Recommended!!

A perfect companion to Three Friars, but markedly different. Here the Virginias are brown and toasty, and the overall taste is sweeter on the back of the tongue. The Perique is there, but I find it restrained. The flavor and quality of the tobacco are extraordinarily good. I detect a sweetener that is probably not neutral, but it is used so sparingly that it is difficult to identify. Yet, it adds a nuance that complements the Virginia. The overall effect is a sweet, mild, toasty Virginia with a light Perique tang and no bite. This is also a beautiful tobacco to handle and pack, as is Three Friars. It is a bit on the dry side, and can take a firm pack, and it burns a long, long time. This is a slow sipping Va./Perique lovers tobacco. Midway through the smoke we are hitting the Perique zone and getting very, very close to Escudo. Bayou Morning and Three Friars are likely to become my first choices for a ribbon cut Va./Perique. Blast! Now I am compelled to sample even more of the C&D tobaccos, especially their Perique blends. Highly recommended. Paddy.

This has a good hefty dose of perique. It lets itself be known. Even still the Virginias still manage to be heard. Not really for beginners because of the intents spiciness of the perique. For me it was Very enjoyable in the morning. The best way to control the spiciness is slow puffs. When it gets to spicy just slow down on you draw and it should mellow out. I'm a lover of VaPer's but for me it a little over Perique. I've noticed lately more and more blends are, if a little is good more is better. More is just more. So highly recommend for anyone that want intense perique. But if you like Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture my want to try something different.

This is a wonderful spicy blend to kick off your day. Even though this could be an all day blend. It seems a obvious choice for a morning smoke. With nice bready, grassy, bright, sweet notes comming from the Virgina, mixed with fruity, spicy, zest and peppery flavors from the Pirique. This blend pairs great with coffee or tea. It has a nice wake your butt up spice through the nose as well. I feel this blend is so wonderfully thought out it's hard to not grant it a 4 star rating.

Since I have taken in love with C&D's Bayou Morning Flake, I thought I'd try the original ribbon cut out to see the difference. I can't say anything about packaging, because I bought this sample in bulk. That being said the tobacco itself comes in an even ribbon that is mostly dark yellows and golden browns. The pouch note is similar to that of BMF. Tangy, bready Red Virginias, spicy, fruity Perique. As someone once told me, it oddly smells of blue cheese. It packs well and lights well. It comes at the right moisture for my liking.
As I light up that bready, bakery Red Virginia is the first thing I taste. The Virginias are more forward than they are in the flake version. The Perique is just as noticeable as it is in the flake, giving off dark fruit and spice. I think the Perique is more spicy here than in the flake, but that makes sense as the process of pressing tobacco naturally mellows and marries the flavors of the smoke.
The taste is a medium. It is about where I want it for a average VaPer. The strength I give a medium too. At 25% Perique I would have thought that this would have a stronger kick but it's more of a middle-of-the-road type blend. The taste is consistent and the room note is typical of a VaPer for what it's worth. I will say that I prefer the Flake to the ribbon cut, but I wouldn't hesitate to pick this up if I was running low and couldn't get a hold of the flake.

Presentation: Plain orange background with text.
Cut: Comes in a ribbon cut.
Tin note: Smells of rich fruit.
Tasting notes: Fruity, bready, grassy, toasty, figgy, smoky, earthy. Maybe a bit citrusy at times. There is a very short bread/earth finish on this tobacco. I think the short finish tends me make me puff faster because I want more—be careful with this though because if you smoke it hot, it nullifies all Virginias and tastes like straight perique, which I don't think even the most zealous perique lover would appreciate.
Mechanics: N/A—A well behaved blend.
Extra Remarks: I've smoked this tobacco many times before this review, although it has never been a "daily smoke" type of tobacco for me. Once I lit the bowl I got about a quarter way through the bowl just zoning out and enjoying it before remembering I had a review to do... this tobacco just takes you away. So I smoked the bowl through before packing another for review. This is a great tobacco if you see it for what it is—robust(in flavor), simple tobacco—for the perique lover. A classic, though underappreciated, VaPer blend. 4 stars.

Over the past several years I have wanted to purchase a poker meerschaum as the poker is my favorite pipe shape but never really saw anything that grabbed me and as I have so many pipes as it is I have not pursued it until last week when I saw one with my name on it. I looked at it for a few days and decided if I did not buy it and it got sold I would be crying like a baby. I ordered it from Altinay. My girlfriend had bought me a small Calabash meerschaum style pipe some ten years ago that is an Altinay and it colors nicely. Four days later it arrived from Eskisehir, Turkey and I decided to smoke Bayou Morning in it. This is really good stuff and definitely is loaded with Perique as over the past week when smoking it I have caught myself coughing at times which rarely happens. The Perique must be tickling my throat and is the dominant player in this blend. Some have alluded this as a rough smoke and I can see their point. Rough yet smooth if that makes sense. I have been on a Perique kick lately and this blend is definitely worth trying. It burns to an ash and produces billows of white clouds as I smoke it.

This is a big and bold Va/Per beauty. So while I rate it, "highly recommended" be aware that if you are not use to Va/Pers or you hate perique in general you need to move on. If you're still here, then you need to give this one a try. The tin note is a grassy virginia with a plum and raisin note. Big chunks of pressed virigina are woven in with coarse chopped perique, a bit of rubbing out maybe needed for some of the virginia strands. Once lit a deeply satisfying sweet virginia note pops right up on the palette while a fig and spice note begin to take off. Half way through the bowl everything is playing nicely together, raisin, bread, and sugary notes are all even with a spicy mouth feel really starting to warm up. Finally, toward the end of the bowl, the perique sends you off with a spicy mouth feel that reminds you that you smoke this wonderful blend and should probably do it again... right away. I find myself filling up another bowl soon after the last one went out.
Mechanically speaking I do have trouble with this blend at times. I attribute that to the flaked virginia. However, I am not opposed to a few relights on a blend this satisfying. Little to no dottle is left, nor does it seem to leave excessive moisture in the bowl. So how much do I really like this blend? I have a pound of it aging and another half in my rotation.

This blend (perhaps I should say "mixture" as no casing will be found here) is all about the Perique. It is somewhat similar to Old Joe Krantz in both the nicotine and perique departments alike. Just like the latter, it will develop harsh spots, maybe not as sharp, if you don't keep an eye on your smoking cadence. C&D seems to be using its proprietary Virginia leaf in different ratios all across its ranges and different blends. That is to say you can actually purchase their red and bright Virginia leaf, and Perique of course, and have a go at blending your own mixture yourself for a fraction of the price. As a matter of fact, I have achieved similar results to this going down this road. Having said that, Bayou Morning is a good mixture everyone who is into Perique should probably try at list once. This tobacco, because of its high Perique content, leans a little bit onto the more-moist-than-usual side of things, but it smokes perfectly fine straight out of the bag/tin. The red and bright Virginia leaf adds sweet and hearthy undertones, but not as pronounced as in other blends. As for the Perique, it adds a very nice tangy undertone that will get stronger and stronger the more you progress with your bowl. Despite its high nicotine content, it could be an everyday smoke as no tongue-bite is detected, but this of course is down to your personal preferences. Not quite reaching a 4 star rating, but a very good and honest baccy for what it is: no strings attached here.

This is a very well mannered VaPer. But if you puff away like a run away freight train it can get a bit harsh (but no bite). A very smooth ribbon cut tobacco. The perique falls on the "peppery" side of the spectrum. A good overall blend.

Cornell & Diehl's flagship VaPer. Bayou Morning is a VaPer in the rough. Rich and satisfying. The perique in this blend is closer to sharing center stage rather than merely being a movie extra in the background as it usually is in most VaPers. Robust from start to finish, this perique is raisin, spicy and full; working in tandem with the earthy Virginias to bring about a slight sweetness and tang. Despite it's strength, this is a great morning smoke, paired with black coffee; or great in the evening paired with a good stout brew. It doesn't get the full 4 stars, but it's damn close- 3.4 stars. This should age very nicely.

Delicious, abundant fruity Perique flavour on opening the tin. Beautiful red and bright Virginias in a medium Ribbon Cut. The tin label states: 25 % of Perique. “A whole lot”, is my first thought. Actually, it is far away from being a Perique bomb!
Excellent smoking conditions. I had never ever guessed that there is as much as 25 % of Perique in this mixture. The Perique is always there, fruity and peppery, often taking the lead, but never covers up the Virginias. I can detect bread notes, very little hay and no grass notes. The flavour range of this mixture is limited, but eventually leads to a well balanced, tasteful Va/Per mixture with quite some backbone. Normally I prefer aged, matured, dark Virginias. Nevertheless, these red and bright Virginias are well selected, very tasteful and donate a welcome, light, natural sweetness. No tongue-burns. Soft, pleasant nose-tingle on retro-hale. Nice mouth-feel and aftertaste.
I do not recommend DGT (Delayed Gratification Technique) with this mixture, although it is generally recommendable with Virginias. Here it leads to an unpleasant, acrid taste. Once lit, finish your bowl. Over all a harmonious, tasteful, top level Va/Per mixture. One of the best Perique forward Va/Pers on the market. It’s among my favourites now.

Let me preface this by saying I am not an aromatic lover.
This in side of the span of half a can has become my favorite blend. It has alot of perique to flesh out Virginias and by that I mean if you don't like spicy smoke you will not like this. The Virginia comes through with sweetness and fresh cut hay/ grass, but that being said, you may have to search for anything but the sweetness.
I highly recommend BM to anyone who loves a good bit of flavour with a little complexity although not overly so combined with medium strength.
Side note. If your sinuses are clogged at all this will clear them out quicker than hellfire in the church house.

I really have just begun to explore VaPers as a category only smoking Escudo and C&D's Night Train before this. Hence, my review must be considered in that light and as provisional with my rating as perhaps temporary while I sort through those blends I own (C&D Sunday Picnic and Blakney's Arcadian Ribbon) and have not yet tasted or those not yet acquired.
Upon opening my 2 oz. tin of this bulk ribbon blend I was immediately taken with an aroma that said "TOBACCO!". My, my, did I ever like the tin aroma. I packed my Digby half bent billiard - one of three pipes I have designated for VaPers only- and fired it up. If I was expecting an Escudo clone I was in for a surprise. The Perique here is right up front and hit me right off. Now, I do like Perique, but I wasn't sure if I liked this. Escudo seemed more Virginia with Perique where Bayou Morning seemed more Perique with Virginia. The peppery notes hit the back of my mouth and throat quickly. I can describe the difference in other, food-based terms: Escudo's Perique was as spicy as jalapeno peppers whereas Bayou Morning's is more serrano peppers. They are similar but the serrano is a bit sharper. So too, here in Periques.
Bayou Morning's Virginia component was sweetish, but not overly sweet and lacked the VA tang that Escudo has to me. I wasn't sure I really like this one and began to mentally prepare a 2.5 star review.
Then two weeks ago I packed this in a MM Cob I reserve for non-cherry aromatics. I rarely use it and this was a spur of the moment thing. Incredibly the edgy sharp notes disappeared, were mellowed, had the edges knocked off, and I was smoking a wonderfully tasty VaPer that just oozed "tobaaaaaaco". Spicy, balanced taste. Since this discovery Bayou Morning has become my alternate first smoke of the day (the other being C&D Startfordshire). I've nearly finished off my tin and will reorder- probably in the flake form in addition for a better or at least another comparison to Escudo. Night Train, which I like as well did not figure in my comparison, btw. I'm not sure why, really.
All three of the VaPers I've tested so far have replaced aromatics as my trade-off from my usual heavy English. When next I go to a local pow-wow, this is the tobacco I will take as a gift for the tribal elders.

On initial presentation, Bayou Morning extends a simple invitation. The silky ribbony texture, a mellow, sweet-and-sour pouch aroma suggestive of dried fruit, forecast a flavorful experience, and that's what you get. Nothing fancy. Good, sweet virginias with a little spiciness from the perique. Steady, even burning with no harshness or bite. Not the driest smoke I've ever had, it always seemed to finish out with a wet dottle at the end, but no problem. The delicious flavor easily makes up for it. I could smoke this exclusively, were I so inclined.

This is some good vaper blend,I bought a pouch of this stuff and wished I could buy more . The aroma is a fig plum with a weak weak weak ketchup aroma. I lit it and the virginia was sweet and the perique was in the back ground and very consistant.
For me it is a mild vaper compared to Louisana red from pipes and cigars as far as I know so far but a high quality tobac. I am going to buy more soon probably half lb. since I am still trying vapers . very recommended.

Like the other Runowski blends I've tried, Bayou Morning is strong, simple and full of natural tobacco flavor. No frills, just pure relatively unadultered American tobacco. Brash and boisterous Virginias smattered with peppery Louisiana Perique hit the palate like a 5 locomotive freight train until it fades, chugging and clanking into the distance, at the bottom of the bowl. Some might call that monochromatic but I call it a damned good smoke. While I too like my share of heady English blends, this stuff never fails to satisfy. Along with Old Joe Krantz and Haunted Bookshop, Bayou Morning has earned a spot in my all day rotation. I look forward to trying more of Bob's blends, as those I've tried so far have been right up my alley.

A good tobacco, neither powerful as Dunhill Navy Rolls or Three Nuns, nor tasteful as Treasures of Ireland Limerick, but this is something you can smoke everyday and feel comfortable with. All in all it's a light blend considering its components, and never boring because the Perique jumps in and out throughout the bowl.

For now, BM is my VAPER of choice. It's different from the tinned flake version in that the virginias are not stoved. The perique makes it's presence known from the first light just about all the way to the end. If one were to mix Briar Fox and perqiue one could come close to BM. This favorite of mine is fantastic as the first morning smoke with a cup of coffee. Escudo has nothing on this wonderful VAPER. I will always have some on hand.

One of the first tins I bought as a new pipe smoker was Bayou Morning Flake. To this day, out of the twenty or so tins I've smoked, that remains my favorite. I decided to go bulk because I found a website offering the 067 Bayou Morning at 16oz for $25, and I figured the ribbon cut would be mostly familiar to the flake.
I was entirely wrong on that count. The taste here is less sweet and more earthy, which was noticeable from the aroma the moment I opened the package. Although I much rather prefer Haddo's and Escudo's, you should keep in mind that I've only been smoking for a few months now--so my palette likely prefers the more sugary taste of Virginias.
The perique is well proportioned, it lights and burns quite easy and smooth, and is clearly a product of quality. Any smoker with an interest in VA/Perique blends should definitely give this a shot.
But to be honest, it isn't what I was expecting, and I'm getting a bit tired of it all. I've been smoking this stuff religiously now for about two weeks--three to four bowls a day and it seems I'll never quite get done. I guess I was too ambitious..but still, for the price that I paid for this quality blend, I'm more than happy at the results.

This is my first attempt on a Cornell & Diehl blend. I am very fond of Vapers such as Escudo and Elizabethan, and thought therefore I'd try some American stuff. This is very good and very non-British/European..
The unusual cut makes the tobacco hard to prepare and quite difficult to light up, but when that's done, the tobacco burns very slowly and develops deep, musty and dark sub-notes.
It is not very complex. Compared to English Vapers which are much more delicate with their high notes, Bayou is more masculine and rough. The absence of artificial humectants makes C&D appealing to me. This is a nice change of pace for me, and I will be exploring the C&D line some more.

Update: 05/16/05. While cooking on the grill I popped the mason jar lid on a year old store of Bayou Morning. This has become an amazingly rich, flavorful, nutty and spicey blend. All cigarette and "thin" tobacco taste is lost to deep and bright flavors. I never had the pleasure of the original Escudo but descriptions of that seem to coincide with the layers of sweet, nutty, and spiced flavors here.
I decided to welcome the first day of summer, 2004, with my first smoke of Bayou Morning. This mix is about a month old now, and I have more aging.
I agree with others that upon loading the pipe, the appearance and aroma seem rather staid. Not the hallmark blast of grassy stewed figs that most perique/VA blends exude.
Upon lighting, there was a slightly sour/bland note. Not promising, I thought. I suspected I had perhaps either gotten a bad batch or stored my sample improperly.
No chance. The smoke soon began pouring out the flavor and aroma of manly man tobacco graced by natural sweetness and just a touch of pepper. It is a supple smoke that awakens the palate. Very few "morning blends" have ended up being so for me. This one, I could see as an AM bowl. Not harsh or strong. Halfway through the Perique kicks up but is still flavorful vs. damaging. This weed never once bit or gurgled. SMOOTH.
What amazes me about the world of the pipe is that so many variations on very similar base ingredients can be had. While still VA/Perique, this is markedly differnt from Stratford, Dorchester, 3 Friars, Redwood, and even a powerhouse like Haddo's. This fills that niche for all those who want a very straight forward VA/P smoke without the "refinement" of the UK offerings yet without the devestating strength of perique powerhouse brews.
While I personally may not smoke it all the time (just due to my unfocused tastes), I give it 4 stars due to the quality of ingredients and strength of their composition.

Bayou Morning is good morning, noon and night. Comes ready to smoke in a ribbon cut that is easy to pack and burns well.
The first portion of the smoke is piquant and zesty, as the bright VA and perique sing out their tart, spicy flavors. After a good ash layer is formed, the stoved component adds a mellow sweetness to blend with the now fruity perique and light VA?s zest.
This smooth blend of flavors continues until near the end of the bowl, when the perique overcomes the VA?s and emits a deep stewed fruity flavor to finish the smoke. Very enjoyable finish.
Really good VA/perique with just the right amount of perique spice and virginia flavor. This blend is one of the lightest in terms of perique and would make a good introductory choice for the uninitiated.

I had a similar experience to SaltySailor, i.e., the first several puffs were great then this blend took a turn south for me. It may have been too much perique and not a heavy ?nic hit.? I gave it a fair chance but the story was the same in several pipes on different days. I found it grew harsh and spicy and it drowned out the pleasurable taste that I experienced in the first several puffs. My palate did not care for what may have been an excess of perique in my sample. If you like perique this is for you, not me.
I rate this tobacco 5.0 out of 10

First of all, this is a very aptly named tobacco. It actually has a sweet aroma that reminded me of a morning on the bayou in Louisiana.
If you are looking for a nice light Va/Per smoke where the Perique doesn't overpower the Va leaf, this could be it.
Not overly complex, this is a good all-day smoke, as advertised.
Like a morning on the bayou, it's relaxed and easy.

I love virginia perique blends and this is very good! I realy prefer the moisture levels in the Cornell and Diehl blends and this one was just right when I recieved it. This is a full, woodsy blend with a decent hit of perique. Another thing I noted about this blend is the ease in which this packs in any size bowl. I definately think that this would be a good blend to stock up on and age for a while. The flavor and smoothness of this blend improved after only a few weeks of aging. This has alot of potential! Highly recommended for the virginia perique lover!

This tobacco really fills a niche! Here is what I mean: I love full VA tobaccos, particularly in the fall/winter when full flavors really warm the soul. Sort of like crackling fireplaces, roasted chestnuts . . . (you get the picture). It is this time of year when I turn from high-end Burleys (Barbary Coast, MacBaren London Blend) and other warm-weather tobacco, to Latakias and VA flakes.
The "problem" (I hate to use that word) with flakes, is that they are slow-burning and take lots of time to smoke. And time is not always something I have alot of to spare; although it is great when I do.
This C&D blend has wonderful full VA taste and body, with hints of spicy Perique. The beauty with this tobacco, however, is that the cut (ribbon) makes it an easy and relatively quick burn. So you can have the taste of a VA flake, with the convenience of a ribbon tobacco. And don't be fooled by the appearance and pouch aroma. Both are sort of basic (kind of boring). This tobacco is all about flavor!
So for you folks who like VA flakes, but don't always have the time to savor a flake, try this!

Original review (09/14/2003)
What a pleasant surprise Bayou Morning turned out to be. I ordered a sampler from C&D 4 months ago and sealed them in Mason jars to meld and age a little.
Today I popped Bayou Morning and filled my Radice Rind billiard. It is a fairly dry ribbon cut that is a heterogenous mixture of light to dark brown. The smell is of tobacco with a slightly sweet smell that could be a topping of some type or maybe just Virginias.
The flavor is sweet and spicy. Obviously, the blend is composed of quality Virginias and perique. I really didn't expect to like this blend as much as I do. I like the full, straight forward flavor. There is nothing subtle here, just good quality Virginias with just enough perique to bring out the flavor of the Virginias. I would highly recommend this tobacco to any VA/perique fancier.
Traditionally, I have always mixed a little perique with McClelland 5100 for a nice VA/perique ribbon cut. Bayou Morning could take its place in my rotation, only time will tell. I only rate this 3 stars because I prefer a flake tobacco.
Update (12/20/2009) A couple of weeks ago I opened 8oz. of bulk Bayou Morning that I sealed in a Mason jar over 6 years ago. What a magnificent blend it has become, with striking, but rounded and pleasant flavors. It compares with any Va/perique I've smoked. The tobacco smells of ripe fruit. Upon lighting the flavors are classic sweet/sour found in well blended Va/periques. I have another 8oz. I sealed the same day that I will continue to age. Now C&D sells their bulk in sealed tins so there's no excuse for not putting some away today.

Nice easy to pack ribbons on the light side colorwise. Lights and burns well. Good creamy smoke (almost chewable). Flavor is pure tobacco, slightly sweet, slightly peppery. Not particularly nuanced but I find nuanced tobaccos kind of tedious. Give me good easily detected tastes any day. First class Virginia/Perique blend.

This is another superb Bob Runowski mixture. His intention in working this up was to create a VA & Perique "without training wheels". Let me be the first to say publicly that Bob has succeeded.
Bayou Morning is a straight forward VA/Perique mixture - no 100 piece orchestra here with nuances and arpeggios (sp?). I would liken this more to a 4-piece chamber ensemble - beautiful to listen to but uncomplicated. Bayou Morning comes straght at you from the start with a semi-sweet and spicy flavor that remains consistent from first light to last puff. The sweetness of the bright VA does develope a little as you progress, but it seems that the VA is not as sweet as some and that is a good thing as the perique lends its own savory cooking mushrooms presence. I attempted to see what kind of tongue bite I could receive by puffing vigorously and sure enough I got that tingle/burn at the back of my throat reminding me to show a little respect.
One matter of note - Bayou Morning DGT's like absolutely NOTHING I have ever tried before. DGT'ing reveals a creamy and rich/sweet smoke that will make me DGT as a matter of practice with this excellent mixture.
I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5.

My first approach was following the name that invites me to smoke on a Sunday morning with very nice results. The combinations of Virginia create a nice basis for the perique in the blend, very well balanced. Some pepper and typical Virginias flavors can be found in the nose. A very pleasant and clean mixture of Virginias with perique. Recommended.

I had a tough time understanding this one. The tin note is tangy and funky, a little like hay, a lot more like silage. Not my favorite by any means. Behaves well on the smoke and is definitely quality but it just has a flavor that’s not for me. I always kinda hate when people review styles they don’t like and then say they don’t like it. But I guess that’s what I’m doing here, I like my perique as a whisper in va/pers, even usually prefer straight virginas, so maybe it’s just my fault for not liking perique. Even after a long aging (8+ years) I didn’t care for it. If you love it more power to ya, but it’s a one tin and done for me.

When you open the tin, the typical aroma of ferment, cheese and vinegar of the perique appears that C & D usually uses in their mixes. Taking a pinch of tobacco shows that it comes a little on the dry side. When you light the pipe you immediately notice the good dose of perique that it contains, but without overwhelming ... as long as you like perique. My tastes may change in the future, but at this point in my life as a pipe smoker the ones I enjoy the most are those who have a good perique presence from beginning to end. I thought it might be similar to Bayou Morning Flake (which is one of my favorites), but the only thing they are alike is in the name ... Here the perique is the protagonist and makes this a fruity, sweet, greedy, and also more monotone than the “Flake” version. However, this is not a problem for me when the flavor is rich, so I am enjoying when I smoke this, although I think the reviewers who claim it maintains the same flavor from start to finish are right. Like I say, this is not a problem for me. If it is not a problem for you either and you like the perique, maybe you should not miss the opportunity to try it. Of course, I have already gotten some tin for the reserve ...
This tobacco seems to me a very good option for those who are starting to smoke a pipe and want to appreciate the perique that they cannot find in other mixtures.
12/09/2021: I have noticed that I do not go to this tobacco as often as others that are in my rotation, that's why I am lowering it a star, but without much conviction in my decision. Certainly, I think it is not an everyday tobacco, as its flavor potency is somewhat overwhelming. However, I still find it interesting to smoke from time to time ...
If for you who are reading this, it is also too powerful in taste, I recommend you smoke it in a pipe with the longest mouthpiece. I don't know if it's something psychological or has some scientific basis, but I think it softens the flavors. Accompanying it with a whiskey also enhances the experience. Works for me...

The alchemy that must go into a blend like this reveals the genius of the late BR. I am continually baffled as to how so much Perique could behave so well, playing harmoniously with the VA, yet not blowing one’s head clean off. I concur with the comparison to butter, not in a dairy sense, but in the incredibly smooth mouthfeel. Dark citrus, toast, earthy vaguely sweet virginias. Not much spice or plumminess here, but there is a pleasant barnyard funk in the sidestream. Does well with DGT and I would guess this would age superbly. This blend did smolder a bit on the hot side, but I did not get any tongue bite.

My review is based of a bulk purchase that I smoked through, and plan to order more.
Smoked fast - tastes like poop. Sipped slowly - tastes like smarties candy a little bit. I get a more sweet note from the tobacco, especially on the retro. I do get a little spice feeling on the tongue, but no actual spicy flavor. Butter? Nope. Grass? Not unless it’s sweetened lemon grass. Perhaps some citrus notes in there... so, almost a sweet/sour thing happening but balanced - like a smartie.
I haven’t tried every va/per out there, but of the ones I have I think I enjoy this one the most at the moment. This does a little better if it sits a while as I smoked some when I first got it and then over time kept digging in the couple ounces I got. I’ll likely get enough of this on the re-order to jar some up and store away for a while.
I think everyone should try this out at least once. If nothing else the va/pers help slow you down which then benefits everything else you smoke, at least IMO.

Presentation: My bulk sample was quite dry. A very good ribbon cut though and it was easy to pick out the different varietals of leaf and colors. I can't compare it to a tin so forgive me there.
Palette: What I expect from a Va/Per is a nice VA smell, sweet and bread-like and the rich, dark fruit from the perique. I got none of that from Bayou Morning. BM smells of, to put it eloquently, hay and silage that was sprinkled with manure and then a heavy rain poured through the roof and soaked the concoction and then left to dry the next scorching summer day with the hot air swooshing in of the open barn doors. It wasn't necessarily repulsive, but unwelcomed. Upon light up, it was quite strong, dry and acrid. The Va's offer a touch of bright, hay-like flavor and some sweetness. The perique was a rough around the edges and offers hardly any plummy,or stewed fruit flavors I expected. A very strong blackpepper hit in the retrohale and even though it lacks flavor, it wasn't unbearable.
Performance: The ribbon cut burns well and it was easy to pack. No points lost there. Where it did lose points is that it was just too strong for my liking, paired with the (lack of) flavor it was just very harsh. Not an all day smoke nor never again. Medium-strong nicotine. Not many relights.
Conclusion: I should have reviewed this first to be chronological with my smoking experience as it's been since last year I've smoked it, but it had such a profound impact on my memory that I can still remember what it was like. Some people love this blend. I don't and I don't want to go near it again. It was just not my cup of tea. The flake version is far superior, but even that said, I don't really care for the flake that much either. Similar profiles, but the flake is softer, sweeter and more refined. I can't recommend this blend at all, but at a price point for bulk it might be worth a try if you are venturing out into the Va/Per world. You may end up liking it.

I purchased the bulk and did not care for it right away. I tucked it in a jar for a year and came back to revisit it.
The perique definitely comes through in the tin note. It is a strong funky and fermented smell that I love. The flavor profile is dark fruit, tang, earth, and peppery spice. I like this blend a lot and it fills a nice role within my rotation. Also, the fact that it comes in bulk is a big plus. Definitely check this one out if you are looking for a VaPer with a bit more body and nicotine than the average offering.

I got this because I wanted to explore VaPers more, as my go-to ones are Elizabethan Mixture and Orlik Golden Sliced.
This is closer to Elizabethan Mixture in that it's more on the savoury side. The Perique is definitely dominant, but if you puff VERY SLOWLY, you can pick up the sweetness from the Virginia's (someone mentioned butter, and I agree. Think very light hit of sweet cream butter. It's nice). Overall, I'd say that this is like smoking a blend of spicy seasonings with a healthy amount of Tobasco and cayenne pepper, whereas, you get more of the meat and potatoes with Orlik and a more balanced mixing with Elizabethan Mixture
I would recommend letting this age some. I smoked this when I got it in the post, and it was overwhelming. After a few weeks, it became a bit more pleasant. So, I'm looking forward to what a year can do.

After McConnel went out of business, I am extremely hesitant to offer any negative view on any pipe tobacco producer, but I literally threw this tin of tobacco in the garbage. This is a far cry from any Va/Per I've ever smoked, and it smokes like cigarette tobacco. I've never been disappointed by a C&D product before, but this particular blend smoked dry and harsh, its flavor was lost due to its stinging effect on the palate, and left notes of dry hay and benzine afterwards.

I would call this a 4-star entry for those new to VaPer's. I found it mild, too mild for my tastes. The other problem is the overall harshness others mention. Just did not taste like a high quality blend. Exclusive offers a bit more perique and just tastes better overall compared to this.
I will try the flake version to see what it offers.

A bit unrefined but I really enjoy this blend. The perique has a sharp, somewhat sour fruity tang. The Virginia's aren't anything too special, maybe an ever so slight citrussy note. But, this is an excellent meat and potatoes smoke with little to no bite. It packs a bit of a wallop in the nicotine department, I might add. Recommended.

Unless you like your tobacco strong in the morning, I would advise you to pass. The smell in the bag is very nice, musty without any trace of sweetness, the packing and lighting is really easy.
Flavors of peppery mushrooms with some very light prune accents from the first part of the bowl, then a boring slightly bitter almost cigarette like interlude, followed by a more comprehensive flavor where the subpar Virginia is tamed by the Perique.
I had the bulk version only and I have to say that it's not a bad Winter smoke if kept short but there are much better Va/Pers available.

Don´t be afraid, nothing about 25% perique.A wonderful balanced VaPer.on the virginian side of the border we find a rich and rustic full american leaf that reminds a lot Ye Olde Signe from Dunhill, damned good.On the Loussiana side a quite moderate but almost perfect dosis of Perique(in my mixtures I use 20% and become a lot stronger).Excellente burning, warm i woul say,no hot.In short one of the best VaPers outthere and at very affordable price in bulk. With a reasonable time of cellaring,2-3 years, might be homeric.I´ve had several serious dis appointments with C&D,but this tobacco redimes all sorrows.Just try it.(the only setback is humidity, perfect for smokung but mayhaps a little dry for cellaring)

Well maybe I got a bad batch but, this stuff was an absolute bore! I’m a big VaPer fan and man this was a disappointment. The Virginians were flat and the perique was hardly there. Maybe it was not blended together very well. I got hardly any fruit, tang or pepper and the VAs didn’t show up either. I got mostly hot air. Just the tinniness bit of grassy, cereal notes. Again no plums or raisins.
I expected MUCH more from a blend with 25% perique. The tin note was also lacking in the traditional VaPer notes. BORING. I bought 2 oz of bulk..it was fresh. No issues with moisture or bite.
I guess I’ll just have to see if father time can make it right. Bayou Morning..NOT..perhaps the tin should say Mojave Desert Morning. As of now I can’t recommend this at all. PASS!!!

I love this blend, the perique content in it is perfect and it's balanced perfectly, the Perique is not to spicy or to sweet, the Virginia's are grassy, sweet and it's got a decent enough nicotine content for a morning smoke. It pairs nicely with a cup of coffee and it leaves a pleasant aftertaste, not ashy or harsh. It's probably an excellent smoke for anytime of day, but I prefer it in the morning. It burns nicely and with few relights. The moisture content was good right out of the tin. I will be buying some of this to put back in the cellar.

Smoked it once and was charmed. Picked up some more to go deeper, and became convinced that for my tastes this was too much ("morning" does not always indicate mild). A deceptively strong VaPer, but with the competition of Escudo Navy Deluxe and St. James Flake, I don't think I'll return to this admittedly worthy tobacco.

ORIGINAL REVIEW 10-29-2015
I received a pretty good sample of this from a forum friend and liked it. I did not like it as much as I did the bayou morning flake as I enjoyed the added sweetness that one delivered with the stoved vas. This one is more on the earthy side of the Virginia sweetness, but does not fall full into the burley tasting vas that C & D seems to often deliver. Still this will not give off much grassy or citrus tones, but still delivers a good amount of sweetness.
The amount of perique seems to be spot on to my tastes. This is good for C & D who occasionally gets a little heavy handed with the stuff. I would say that this could be a great all day type vaper. I liked it, but did not love it. Still I will reorder and might possibly revisit this review at a later time.
UPDATE 4-29-2019
Some time passed after the original review and on one of those "all C&D Bulk 25% off" type sales occasionally run by SP, I ordered 4 ounces of this. I split this into two jars. I opened one after 2 yrs aging and it was substantially better than the sample I had in 2015. Every bowl was tasty, the Virginia had much more sugary sweetness even though there was no signs of plume anywhere.
I only updated this to say that this has improved significantly to my tastes with just a little age. It will be interesting to see how the other jar fares with more age and I shall return to this review after I have had a chance to experience it. I still don't think this is a four star VaPer, so my three star rating remains. unchanged.

I have recently, the last six months, renewed my friendship with my pipe. Before this time I smoked it occasionally, due to smoking cigars, and then it was only aromatic tobacco. I have found that I love VaPer blends and this one is excellent. It is blended well and delivers good firm perique taste. If you like perique blends, try it.

This is my favorite VaPer by a long shot. Tin note: raisin bread. Moisture level: slightly damp - perfect for aging in a glass jar. A gorgeous medly of Virginias mixed generously with pungent perique. The most recent batch (8/2015) is beautiful, perhaps the nicest tobacco I've ever seen. Dry this stuff, then preen the larger chunks before packing. When properly prepared, you get an easy to smoke pipe with lasting sweet peppery flavor. Strength is respectable, certainly enough N to please most of us. Bayou Morning is free from annoying suggary additives and burns nice and cool. No tongue bite or chalky mouth. It's great fresh, which is a good thing because I haven't ben able to leave it on the shelf long enough to age it.

This was my first vaper blend. Also my first introduction to perique. This blend is very very good. There are sweet, creamy, and meaty/earthy notes throughout. The flavor is a little hard for me to describe. Smokey, creamy, spicy, but absolutely amazing. The flavor richly coats the pallet and can be tasted a good while after the smoke is complete. This blend has become at this time my go to blend. A large bowl of Bayou Morning after a good meal is icing on the cake.

Citrus, freshly cut grass, plus bread crust when to added heat. But then the Perique enters very suddenly and overrides all this notes. The perique content is too high for me therefore I rate it of two points. And also I felt that the BM taste and smell like a cigarette. PS: I have put the tin to aging. Hopefully BM would be mellow.

I was given a 4oz sample of this at the pipe show several years ago. In my true form I stuffed it in a jar and forgot about it. Some months later I found it and in the period of a week smoked the whole damned jar. My only problem I had forgotten the name of the tobacco. I met the vendor again at my B&M an he remembered me and the sample. He gave me two tins and I have had this in my rotation ever since. It is a very soft and mellow tobacco. I never dry here. Just stuff and puff. Lights fast with a wonderful char. Smokes like a dream. Great with morning coffee or afternoon snack.

Mild yet tastey smoke. Easy and enjoyable. As someone that usually enjoys Latakia blends, I found this had enough taste to keep me interested. What I found so surprising was how easy and clean this was to smoke. Wife, who rates the room note for me (she is the one that has to deal with them) found it to bo somewhat enjoyable.

Bayou morning is a classic Vaper. I thought the perique is too much, but it really tastes smoothly with solid tobacco flavor. 30 bucks for 1 pound, great flavor and price for all VaPer lovers.

I must admit that it took me a while to understand this tobacco, now that I do I can write a proper review! When I popped the jar it was completely dry with an unpleasant and musty flavor (who said perique?!), like earth after it rained. In fact the first smokes in were harsh and clogged up my throath and made me cough hard, wondering where was the magic and where was the wonderful buttery and citrusy tobacco which the other reviews talked about. Not giving up I decide to try the last card in my hand: humidification. I let it a rainy morning outside the window in order to catch some humidity and then after a good lunch I tried again. It was another tobacco! The unlit marshy notes disappeared leaving a pure tobacco flavor, then the fire test expressed what the real nature of this tobacco is: buttery and not too zesty virginias with sparks of spicy perique. After that I had to impose myself smoking something else because for a week I didn't smoke anything else! I prefer it in medium sized bowls and I suggest to gravity fill it, don't press it too much or it will reveal its harsh notes and transform the pepper into hot chili pepper! Strangely I found it very harsh smoked in corn cobs, both dry and re-humidificated versions,I don't know why but I can only smoke it in briars.

I purchased this item as the reviews here led me to believe I would really like it. Unfortunately, this did not turn out to be the case - now I did not abhor it - its just that to me it did not match up to the fanfare it has received. I've consumed an ounce so far and tried it straight out of the tin and after leaving it to dry for 30 or so minutes and although it was somewhat better after some drying the large component of perique was a tad too much as I never was able to discover the sweetness of the virginia's I had hoped to find. That said, the tobacco was not entirely one dimensional but the dimensions seemed limited to perique and not perique. The burn was very good - easy to light and easy to keep lit with a light gray ash and zero goop at bowls end. However, I found I really had to be careful not to increase my rate and duration of each puff in a search for the virginia signature. If you simply cannot find another VaPer with enough Perique to satisfy you then by all means give this a try.

For a brief moment it is bright and citrusy. But that stops and the Perique enters like a thief in the night. Not for the faint of heart. The nicotine from the burley stewed in nicotine soup (Perique) is staggering. My heart fluttered a couple of times. Not in comfortable way.

Bayou Morning is for the pipesmoker who enjoys a nice, strong old time tobacco. Enough was said about the virginias and perique already. All I want to add is that it's a tobacco every sincere piper should have in his or her rotation. This is TOBACCO in the true sense of the word. You can't go without it.
Highly recommended.

Prep: Dried ribbon on sheet of paper 5 minutes, gravity fed and lightly tamped.
Appearance: Rather moist out of the tin, fairly uniform coarse ribbon cut.
Tin/Pouch Note: Strong vinegar and dried fruit (apricots) upfront. A little hot sauce in there as well; kinda like tabasco sauce.
Char and initial light: Incredible bright citrus sourness upfront, with a black pepper spice that was pretty aggressive on the snork. After the second light, a bready backbone carries those two flavors in a very round, very balanced. It's very clean, bright, and spicy.
As the bowl progresses, the flavors round out a bit and I get a lot more sweetness and a creamy richness. This did smoke quite wet, nothing a cleaner ran down the stem couldn't fix. I'll dry it out even more next time but I was impatient.
Nicotine was appropriate for a Va/Per. Satisfying but not dizzying.
Wife commented "That smells MUCH better than the last thing you smoked in here" (Pirate Kake). I picked up a very bready tobacco scent.

Well, I was surprise by the smell from Bayou Morning in bulk. It smell vinegar to me. So, I was affraid I got a bad deal with it. After the first pipe, I tought: "nothing special. Don't have the vinegar smell in the smoke but it's flat". This tobacco burn cool, no bite. After a week, I give it a new try and it was the same but 2 or 3 days later, I was willing to smoke it again. Well, now, it's a favorite. Maybe my first try was disapointing as I never tried virginia perique before but now, it's a cool smoke, sweet with little spiciness and as other said, like butter. Very very good smoke. It's 5 stars for me. Avoid when wake-up.

While my palate may not be as refined as that of a more experienced smoker, I must admit that this is a fine Virginia/Perique blend. There is a velvety quality to the smoke, perique taking front seat. The virginias, however, back it up nicely by adding their subtle sweetness. The taste of peppered plums from the perique mixes well with the grassy notes of the virginia. Midbowl, the virginias step it up a bit, and the perique seems to back them up for an interesting change of pace. At the finish, the taste is much like the beginning, only more intensified.
This has quite the kick to it, so I always make sure to enjoy on a full stomach. I learned that years ago from a particularly unpleasant incident with Dunhill's Elizabethan Mixture.
Burns cool all the way through the bowl with only a few relights for me. Room note is standard for the type of blend.
Update: I have been enjoying this in regular rotation as my Virginia/Perique blend of choice. I've found it difficult to get enough of this blend. I have other tobaccos that I've been meaning to get to, but alas, this has not happened while I still have Bayou Morning waiting for me.

This is the first vapor I have ever tried, and I am glad I did. This tobacco lights well, and stays lit well, allowing for a cool, slow, and relaxing smoke. Perfect moisture right out of the tin, and the tin holds the moisture well after opening. The Perique takes this blend to a different level of complexity that is hard to find anywhere else.
I find this blend to be very strong. Not sure if it is the Perique or if it has a high nicotine content, but as someone who enjoys Full English blends, I welcomed and enjoyed the strength of this blend.
I recommend this blend to anyone who is looking to get into vapors or anyone who currently is and hasn't tried it.

I'm a Vaper guy, and I have smoked a bunch over the years, flake, cake, broken flake, ribbon.....I shyed away from this because i've read it's heavy in perique, and i've a sensitive mouth. Finally decided to roll the dice, and i'm glad I did.
Here's my quick review...burns very clean leaving very little dottle. Taste starts out typical sweet Virginia, and perique kicks in very soon after the first few puffs. Here's the thing, instead of providing heat or bite, the perique comes through (at least to me) as a sort of slightly bitter taste which off sets sweet virginia, and it works perfectly! Nice strength and a good amount of nicotine without overkill, just a very enjoyable and satisfying smoke. I can buy it in bulk, save some coin and enjoy it all day. The only drayback it that it burns much faster than a flake, but i'll adjust. I've smoked it in all size bowls and it is very consistant in taste. I highly recomend this to any Vaper lover, well worth a try.
I live 20 miles from Cornell and Diehl, My wife and I pulled into thier parking lot on a Sunday drive not long ago, i'm gonna have to get down there and see those guys soon, if I can ever get time off from work!

Another great Vaper from C&D, i smoke a lot of Kajun Kake from the same blender and this one is milder and sweeter. Get ready for this one. The Latakia and Perique dominates this blend all the way down the bowl, along with some red virginias that keeps it from choking you half to death. Strength is almost overwhelming so ya better sip on this one. Beyond that, C&D's Bayou Morning has a slightly sweetened and creamy taste that makes for an interesting if not flavorful smoke. Take heed my freinds. This stuff is old school full English, so sip wisely.

This is a VAPER reference for me. Perfect broken flake aspect, beautiful mix into a flake texture still perceivable. Dark brown with gold notes. Juicy and spicy as perique is, but with no tongue biting. Virginia does not push nicotine into the taste. It burns perfectly and, even without having a complexe evolution, it does not get into a boring smoke experience, but a rich and full one. A good"gastronomic" experience, a tasty tobacco.

This is one of my top favorites go-to VaPers for a morning smoke, along with H&H Louisiana Red and Anniversary Kake. Just strong enough to keep things very interesting for me without getting bowled over with the nic or the perique. The perique is a strong presence but the blending makes it palatable, not overwhelming. And it's a sweet, tasty baccy. This is my favorite C&D blend thus far.

I really enjoy this blend. I've had my tin of it for a year and just opened it today and tried it for the first time. I really liked the aroma it had in the tin and found it to still be a little damp so I took out a bowls worth and let it dry a little before I loaded it. When I lit it and took the first puff I was in heaven. I like the full flavor and the smokey, peppery bite I got from it on my tounge. After smoking it for about 5 minuets I had to set my pipe down because the nicotine kick crept up on me and kicked my in the head. I thought I was gonna have to take a nap but I wasn't upset. Mid way I noticed a nice sweet and sour taste with a kick of peppery bite. You gotta sip on it though or you'll go reeling it's got a nicotine kick but not like C&D's Night Train. I really enjoyed my fist experience with this tobacco. It burns well and has a great flavor from start to finnish. It's good for relaxing with a cup of coffee or a glass of whiskey. It's a good Va/Per but I don't know about an all day smoke.

Mostly Red Virginia and perique, smoked on a peterson canadian and a CAO meerschaum. is sweet and peppery for most the smoke, it will bite if is push hard like any other virginia. Is it an all day smoke? well that depends how nicotine you like in your blends because this one packs a punch but nothing that will leave you lightheaded smokes better in mid size to large bowl in my opinion.
This one is a winner in the VAPER categorie.

When I first opened a recently-sealed mason jar of this stuff (I bought 4oz, but couldn't wait to try it - so it isn't aged), I noticed a weird and wonderful aroma kind of like fresh peat and a hint of vinegar. I know others have mentioned the vinegar smell, and it is there, but it goes away on lighting and there is no vinegar flavor I can tell. [EDIT: As I progress through my supply I notice this smell basically goes away after the first few bowls, so I recommend leaving the tin or jar open for a little bit when you first unpack it.]
It packed very well, and lit easily. It burns evenly and smoothly, with no tongue bite. The nicotine in this is stronger than what I usually have been smoking, a VA flake, which I assume comes from the perique. The perique is not so pronounced as some VA/Per I have tried, which is good since I enjoy the spiciness and depth of the Per without being so overpowering (although it is strong...)
The first 1/3 bowl was odd, with a definite earthy taste, but as the bowl burnt down it mellowed into a truly enjoyable experience. The tobacco burns quickly, but not hot, which is interesting. In fact, it is one of the cooler burning blends I have tried.
All in all, if you like VA/Per blends but want a rich flavor without being dominated by the perique, I recommend this blend heartily.
EDIT: This has become one of my favorite blends. I don't get tired of it.

Another really fine blend from C&D. There is a subtle sweetness from the Virginias that is almost (but not quite) overshadowed by the Perique. I like Bayou Morning in a medium size briar or cob and my favorite time to smoke it is in the morning. The Perique is kind of a wake-me-up, much like a good cup of coffee. This is a bit of a tamer version of Haddo's in strength and nicotine content. Bob and Craig, you done good! Four stars.
Update Oct. '07- Aging has caused the flavors of the VA and Perique to meld, making a mellower blend than the original. Whether this is good or bad depends on the taste buds of each individual smoker. Personally I liked it as there are plenty of VA/Pers with a stout Perique presence. When I speak of those, I'm talking about something like Bayou Night. I like both genres and I also like the fact that C&D makes them both available. BM is still a four star blend.

One imagines a Bayou Morning filled with much swatting of varieties of mosquitos so often in fact it would prevent a man from really enjoying the pipe itself. Sadly were it the namesake Bayou Morning that he was smoking as the blend isn't bad at all.
The tin note is not extraordinarily fragrant as many of my favorite VA VA/perique blends are, but the Virginia and perique is unmistakable. The note is light, sweet, organic, and fun.
In the pipe and lit the flavor and balance is modestly balanced and the perique content lends to the sweet VA profile. All and all a pedestrian blend for me that is a decent smoke that doesn't fatigue the palate. I see no fireworks as this is not a complex blend but a fine smoke indeed.

Smoked at 8 months after sealed storage.
There are lots of Virginia Perique blends to choose from including a few bulk blends like this one. Among the choices, Bayou Morning is good but not exceptional. Not much of the classic Virginia sweetness is present and there is a bit more Perique than I like. The aroma has a vinegar smell even when dry but is not noticable in the smoke.
If you prefer a ribbon-cut to a broken flake and like your Virginia zipped up with Perique's tartness and punch rather than in a cased Danish style, this may be one for you since it has a nice even cut and no humectants or obvious casing.

I wanted to step out of my normal latka comfort zone and try something new, different. Bayou Morning fit the bill and then some. I ordered mine direct from our sponsor (golf clap)... Wow! The first impression upon opening the tin was very pleasent on notes of color, texture and scent. I removed a ribbon and aired it a bit while I cleard the harbor mouth and headed out into the channel. Centered in the traffic lane, I loaded up my 98 Nording Beaver and added heat. The first draw was pleasing and oh so very smooth. The second draw felt like I had a ball of velvety smoke in my mouth with an ever so slight nutty taste, ah a pleasure! The third draw hit me, like surfing down the face of a forty footer in a fource 7 gale. I could only hope to steer to the trough without broaching her. I had to set the pipe down. I was firm about picking it up again as soon as my head cleared, which took a full minute. But, alas, too much woman for me lads. Ill have to come back at her again when I return to port.

I did a three layer pack in a new inexpensive white clay pipe (Old German Clay Tavern Straight Carved) with a cardinal on one side and a knight on the other in bas relief. The clay pipe was unbearably dry to start, one of the downsides of a new clay pipe. The upside of a clay pipe is the lack of ghosting from other tobacco. Good for testing but I need to research treating a clay pipe for initial smoking. Bayou Morning lights easily, burns evenly and if you want to set a record for long smoking, this may be the tobacco to choose. The smoke is light and wispy and picks up the colors around it well. The flavor develops over time and it is very evenly blended. I bought an ounce of it, from pipesandcigars.com and it smokes like it spent a good while in a cellar maturing. I will be buying more. A small clay pipe doesn't hold all that much tobacco, so it is rather amazing that it lasted as long as it did. It also built up to a solid nicotine hit, surprising me towards the end of the smoke. Unlike what a lot of reviews said, I considered this a very smooth and elegant smoke. There is a good hint of vanilla and a touch of fruit combined with a distant scent of gunpowder and a hint of tea leaf to it. Perique will do that and this is 25% Perique. On that note, this is the reason I am so fond of Cornell and Diehl. They are not stingy with their information. The fruit flavor is more akin to the effect of incorporating a touch of fruit in a sweet bread. The hint of vanilla and the muted cherry and citrus are more like what you would expect in a bread where you are having trouble finding the bits of real baked in fruit but the sweet notes blend into a delightful harmony. The mood of this tobacco is calm and clear with a touch of buoyancy. I will take this with me the next time I go fishing.

Bayou Morning was something I decided to try when I was looking for a ribbon cut VaPer. This one has taken a bit time to form an impression.
Upon arrival it had a very strong smell that was indescribable. Based on this I didn’t think I would really dig it.
After a while of living in a glass jar the initial smell chilled out and I decided to give the old college try.
In the pipe it has a lot of characteristics of a straight Virginia ribbon. After the first few puffs the spicy magic of the Perique come through and builds as the smoke progresses. However, I don’t seem to become overwhelmed by the Perique. It’s just a nice flavour that enriches the smoke.
While I definitely reach for C&D’s Red Virginia Ribbon most days, I’ve found Bayou Morning to be a good second smoke of the day.

This is officially the best all day blend I've ever smoked. I've smoked so many va/pers, but this, in bulk at least, is my ultimate, go to, all day tobacco. I just cannot imagine a time where this would be anything but awesome, morning or night. It's got plenty of kick for me and is good any way you choose to smoke it. I can take it to work with me pouring and finishing concrete and it is a companion who makes life a little bit better. I enjoy this more than bayou morning flake personally. It's just more palatable to me and a tobacco I will smoke much more often than bmf, not that it's not great being as I've smoked a whole lot of it. It's the perfect example of a 3 star and 4 star review.

Strange thing, before I picked up some straight perique for identification and comparison purposes, this was one of my favorites. Now that I can identify the perique and separate it in my mind from the Virginia somewhat, this isn't coming across as anything special. The perique isn't even coming across all that strong, and I get none of the fetid notes I've noticed in other perique blends (and certainly the straight perique). A lot of pepper, but not a lot of the other and relatively few good things I sometimes get from perique, like fruit. There's some grassiness and creaminess, but little sweetness. The second hand smoke/room note is also a little harsh, and not justified by the blend's merits.
All that said, it's not terrible, just disappointing after having expanded my horizons a little bit. My disappointment is obviously also a product of my personal taste. If this were a nicotine bomb I could see it having some utility because it's not entirely unpleasant, it's cheap, and comes in an easy-to-work-with ribbon cut, but the nicotine content isn't spectacular either. If you like it enough to want to smoke a bunch of it, I'm sure you'd find the nicotine content satisfactory. I could see someone loving this, but I just don't.

If tobacco has the concept of male and female, then this is male and St. James Flake is female, although there is a little vinegar here, but not enough to change the force, Prairie Wind does a good job of this, Enough vinegar weakens the tobacco's alkalinity.

My uncle gave me about 4 oz of this wonderful blend three years ago for Christmas. He usually sends me a pound of something and some samples of others. This was in the box. I let it sit and actually forgot about it until two weeks ago. I hydrated it for a couple of days to my liking and tried a bowl. At first I thought this was good. It started mellow and as the bowl progressed it got more rich and tasty, the finish was perfection. Later in the day I found I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I smoked another bowl. This time it was better than good. It was great. The more I smoked it the more I enjoyed the mixture of Virginias and perique. Just the right amount of both. It made me a total fan. I have to get more. This blend I can smoke all day, everyday without hesitation. I am absolutely going to have to dedicate a few pipes to this. To be honest, I had not heard of Cornell and Diehl until this blend and I am a huge fan now. There is no byte at all, no bitterness, it starts mild and the Virginia’s have just enough sweetness to balance with the spice of the perique. There is some light orange fruit taste and some plum. I would buy this buy the pound for sure.

I bought this one recently when I was stocking up on bulk, because they didn’t have enough of what I was looking for. At least, not when the big sale was going on haha.
Has a good look to it, the cut is nice and they smell is sweet like hay and fresh bread to me. Also a good strong pepper note to it and a bit of dried dark fruits. I bought this in bulk, so there may be a difference.
The cut works well any way you work it. It packs and lights fairly easily, and burns as well as can be expected from C&d. It reminds me a lot of poplar camp, but it’s sweeter and lacks some of the soft edges. The Virginia leaf is tangy, but the reds are counter acting them a bit I think, providing more of a sweet bread kind of taste. The perique is very present, and is more fruity at first, and starts to get a bit spicier at the halfway point. It says it’s 25% perique and I believe it. It really is well set up as a blend. I’ve settled into one or two relights depending on what I’m doing. I think a patient hand could do better though. The nic is satisfying, maybe a bit closer to strong than medium. The room note is pungent, but not unpleasant.
All in all I like this one. I may buy more in the future if need be, however it’s not an imperative. I definitely have smoked this one all day and it worked out well. It did nip a bit here and there, but that was just me puffing away at it. I think most va/per smokers would appreciate this, but it might be a little much for perique sensitive fellas.

A delicious dark, bready, Virginia with a heaping amount of black peppery Perique goodness. Would not recommend if you're new to the hobby, but get some blends under your belt, it's a must try.

I found it difficult to taste the Virginia’s in this. The Perique is a little too overpowering. It burns descent, and the flavor is pretty consistent through the bowl. It has a slight ramp up in strength towards the end. The room note is a little strong, so I wouldn’t smoke this in the house. I would recommend this to Perique fans, but for me, I probably won’t be buying anymore.

Over time, my cravings realign, and this time my buds were sniffing out some VaPers. This one seemed a popular choice with the kids, so here we are with one overly stuffed 2oz bag of shag (or at the least, super thin ribbon).
The contents had a scent you would expect; earthy Virginia 'hay' mixed with peppery Perique. It wasn't terribly complex, had a dry presence, and was the kind of thing which makes me think of unfiltered Camel cigarettes.
This kindling, ripened quickly into a glowing cherry, burned quickly, and gave off thin wisps of white smoke (unlike a dense packed, moister blend), with a Nicotine punch just heavier than expected. Nothing complex here with a one-note taste until the very end. It lacks the juicy meatiness of something like Squadron Leader, but certainly works as an all day smoke for those just wanting a classic (cigarette) taste.
For now, I am having a 2.5 star experience, but I know it will drop to 2 stars once my mood changes again.
