A rich, dark blend, sweet and smoky but not aromatic, this has no flavorings. Two types of Latakia and mellow Perique in optimal balance are enveloped with sweet black cavendish and cubed burley. The perfect contemplative blend, use alone or with quiet friends. Achieve tranquility.

When I found this tin at my local tobacco shop, it had a date of April 25th, 2002. It is 2008 and I just happened to find this on a shelf, purchased it, and opened the can as I left the shop. . The smell from the tin was so wonderful that I just had to try some as soon as possible. Let me put this in perspective. You cannot smoke in the shop where I bought this stuff, the temperature outside was in the mid 90's, I deplore the heat, and there was a pretty hot breeze that day. I still sat myself down and filled a bowl. There are not enough O's in smooth to describe this stuff. The mixture of black Cavendish and Latakia was just right. The burn was excellent throughout the bowl. The ash is clean and grey. The nicotine level was just right for me. That is, it was on the heavier side. Since that first light, I've had an opportunity to smoke this stuff in more comfortable surroundings. This only added to my enjoyment. Proper English fans will not like this, because the Latakia is not terribly prominent. However, many other smokers will love it. I cannot comment on the room note because the wife makes me smoke ALL Latakia blends outside. I, for my part, think that this stuff kind of smells like a fireplace. It is my hope that Cornell & Diehl will re-issue this soon. My tin is half smoked and the closest I can come is Peter Stokkebye's English Oriental Supreme. It is close, but no cigar...pipe.

Being a normal VA flake smoker, this blend was quite a departure for me. There is no VA @ all in Tranquility. Since I received a complimentary sample with my last net tobacco order, I gave it a try and wasn't disappointed. A medium ribbon cut of brownish to black tobacco, the moisture content was ideal and made for easy packing and no relights. Overall, the names are fitting, since the entire smoke requires little attention. I sometimes tolerate rather than enjoy dominating Latakias but this one has just the right influence for my taste. Perhaps the Burley contributed to the nutty flavor that became stronger as the smoke progressed but was enjoyed. C & D and W. Serad have done a nice job in creating a smooth, cool and mellow blend.

Tranquility is a name which only hints at the nature of this blend. In truth, I regret not arriving at the formula before Mr Serad. A full, unambiguous smoke for the mature palate. Dark, moist, with a sense of a fermented fruit essence but no casing. Not the taste of chocolate or dark brown sugar, which has a cloying sweetness. There are subtle qualities in each bowl which I smoked somehow I missed in the previous smokes. The latakias complement each other and set the tone for the direction of the smoke, and the perique holds its own presence. But the burley (and I love any burley but really favor cubed burley) and the black cavendish acknowledge a smoothness and quiet sweetness through the smoke.

I have a Peterson Shamrock X63 1/2 bent which has exhibited a fondness for this tobacco, so I smoked the tin over a few weeks in just this pipe. No other tobacco during this trial in this pipe. Each smoke became a little fuller, a little more obvious in the strength and presence of the latakias. No gurgle, clean gray ash, relatively clean pipe cleaner through the smoke too. A fine smoke, which should improve w/ some sitting in the tin.

This blend is of a very high quality as are the other Serad blends and upon opening the tin you see a wonderful combo of dark medium cut leaf. The tin odor is wonderful with the raisin odor of the perique wafting through along with the latakia. The burley only makes its prescence known when smoked. Packing is easy, the moisture appears perfect as with all the C&D blends. Lighting was a little more labor intensive (about 5 vestas).Flavor starts out with the nutty grassiness common to burley blends, but settles into a nice rich quartet in moments.About half-way into the bowl, the perique makes a grand entrance. For some that is a welcome, but for me it made me anything but "tranquil". This blend just has too much perique for me to enjoy. The blend finishes all the way down the bowl with just grey mottled ash and dry, but after six bowls, I have given the rest of the tin away to a friend who appreciates perique more that I do. I much prefer Black Dawg, Canal Boat, Da Vinci, and of course my favorite C&D blend by Mr Serad: Longevity...

The description is interesting and, given a free sample, I thought I'd give it a go. Rich latakia and perique accented with the fullness of burley and a hint of cavendish set me up with high expectations despite the cheesy name for this tobacco.

All in all, I was quite dissapointed. While a blend should always err on the side of caution with perique, there is an insuffiencient amount of perique in this blend; the flavors begin to run together and, after the first couple puffs, lose any delicate subtleties they may have had.

I agree with the other reviewers that there is a slight nuttiness in this tobacco that reminds me of a mock- Padron cigar. While this tobacco isn't BAD, it lacks any definition or character. It burns consistently, but the flavor's hardly worth trying.

Not recommended. In the end, you won't get anything unique from this tobacco and would be better off with Frog on the Bayou if you need a little perique.

When I read the description of the components of this mixture, I was ready for a harsh smoking experience. There are no virginias to sweeten it; no orientals to attenuate the latakias. SO I settled in to my recliner with my Comoy sandblast and braced myself. The first impression was one that spoke of a subdued nuttiness. The blend of latakias definitely holds sway in this mixture as they are a constant. Now let me say this, I LIKE latakias. I do not LOVE them, nor am I a candidate for the Betty Ford clinic for the latakia addicted, but I really enjoyed this. The flavor is nutty-sweet and the flavor holds well. The perique gives the aroma a little boost like the cooking mushrooms. The burley adds richness.

I was suprised by the strength that kicked in about 3/4 down the bowl. I must get more of this. It may become a main-stay. I would compare this favorably with Deacons's Downfall.

Recommended.
